why book 1 tedros wasn’t bad... at all?
so uhh in the past i’ve heard people rant about tedros in book 1 or how much they didn’t like him? all points make sense but i feel like he wasn’t as bad or whiny or a bully like he is seen to be in the first book? i actually think his character was written very well and understandably in book 1.
complaint #1 (the biggest one good lord): he was rude, terrible, and sometimes a bully especially to agatha.
now. something that a lot of people forget is that in the scene when tedros and agatha first encountered each other, tedros was actually nice to her ?? he tried to help her up and introduced himself and all. it was actually her who was quite rude to him and decided she disliked him because of her jealousy regarding sophie wanting to stay at school for him.
then came the gargoyle scene, where they have a pretty big misunderstanding and yes, killing a child was cruel but he didn’t realize?? in fact a lot of students at school didn’t know that these creatures were students and young children just like them until agatha reveals this at the circus of talents. this causes him to further believe she’s a witch and also?? he was trying to SAVE her lmao
now after the hobgoblin incident, that’s where his behavior gets lowkey annoying with the whole following her around and imitating the hobgoblin incident, and oh lord, believing agatha when she pretended she hexed him which led to him shooting a doll that was made to look just like her (ummm?? honey, i get you’re upset about being hexed but too far-) i’ll admit this was... bad. maybe it was because he feels threatened by supposedly being hexed to be “dumb as a donkey’s ass” ig. i genuinely stared at the page and was like “boy’s got ISSUES” lmaoo (poor agatha why’d she have to witness that-)
so yeah, a lot of his behavior regarding that is justified. does he go too far sometimes? yes, true. but i feel like they both provoke each other at times and most of the time it’s agatha who decides to be rude in the situation when she could easily be polite i guess? but yeah.
complaint #2: he’s arrogant, whiny, unlikeable, blah blah blah
some people genuinely don’t like his character. i get that. but i feel like we kind of ignore his really good moments too?
like when sophie was being god AWFUL and talking crap about agatha and dot behind their backs and saying how they’re holding her back and how she plans to ditch them and tedros
tedros freaking CALLS her out, like he does not hesitate to call her a bad friend and point out all the things dot has done for her and ignores her attempts to get his attention after that
like oh my god how can you not stan him after this ??? like this is a perfect character development moment, he has bad bitch tendencies, and he doesn’t hesitate to call out people when they’re being awful even when it doesn’t completely concern him-
his backstory was done very well too, like there were two chapters that started with a few paragraphs of his point of view, where his home life was explained and that whole ordeal set up his reaction when he found out sophie was lying to him and all, like PERFECT
and him not believing agatha when sophie framed her,,, like,,, yeah that sucked but it was also believable? considering his past and now sophie’s recent betrayal, it would make complete sense to him that agatha would betray them since they didn’t get along up until recently and she did kind of sneak off to see sophie after he told her not to (i mean she was right to try to stop the attack but anywaiz)
yuh he wasn’t bad in the first book, i’m kind of surprised that people are complaining about him HERE when he was actually awful in book 2 where he was literally about to murder agatha for leaving him and supposedly betraying him like okay cool dark sides are always interesting but y I K E S,,,

My thoughts on Soman's response.
This. This was so bad. First off, he didn't even say sorry. He straight up said he didn't feel guilty. Oh okay, you don't feel guilty for contributing to toxic beauty standards? You don't feel guilty for triggering people with eating disorders? You don't feel guilty for PROMOTING fat shaming in a CHILDREN'S BOOK? That's right. This book is marketed to children ages 8-12. 8 year olds are being exposed to fat shaming, encouraging eating disorders, and toxic beauty standards.
Second, he talked about him being SKINNY SHAMED. Okay, I would never invalidate somebodies experiences with being bodyshamed, but like, READ THE ROOM SOMAN. We're sitting here, trying to help and better you as a person by showing how your books have cause harmed to many people, and you're gonna invalidate other people's experiences by talking about your own. Skinny shaming is a very real problem, but maybe don't talk about it to a bunch of teenagers who've been fatshamed and struggled with eating disorders just to look like the body image YOU'VE promoted.
Third, he compared himself to DOT. Dot, the character who was fatshamed her whole life by her father, her best friends, and literally everybody else in the series. And you know his reasoning? "I was bullied for being too skinny as a kid." WHAT. Dot literally lost weight to fit in the beauty standard and you're gonna compare yourself to her? Absolutely not.

im crying while writing this because im just imagining all of the people who were affected with eating disorders watching an author they used to idolize invalidate their eating disorders because it's "satire". He didn't think this through at ALL.
