[ something something ted asked him what he loves and he couldn't answer bc what did he even love? his wife? he loved her, yes, but not in the way he was supposed to and that reality was slowly crushing him. christ, he didn't even wear his ring anymore. it made going to the right bars easier, even if the guilt of it ate him alive.
his daughter? of course, but how hard is it to parent someone when you're living a lie? how can he be who she needs when he feels like a machine most days? a roomba. going in circles endlessly and pointlessly, trying to pick up a mess that won't stop spilling. what could he possibly give her?
so he doesn't answer and then has to run home and it all comes out, all of it, this time. he doesn't hedge, he doesn't think, he just tells her. and she knows, she can't reasonably deny this anymore and they cry and they hold each other and they divorce.
and he gets fired. and he stays. and now he's told someone, after weeks, months, of saying it without saying it. he wore the leopard shoes, the first article of clothing he'd bought after coming out to his wife, to be fired and to tell ted that same evening. he wore them to pitch the book that would let him stay close to the man who made him feel like most himself. he wears the rainbow bracelets his daughter makes him and brings a rainbow snoopy to work and let's himself be. he wears the shoes again in amsterdam and he comes out to first person, out loud, since his ex wife. and he sings that everything is gonna be okay, sans blazer and without armour.
all because a ridiculous man in a ridiculous mustache with a ridiculous accent looked at him and saw something he couldn't even know was so deep inside. there was no way for ted to know that the words he spoke to a near-stranger were actively changing his entire world. not changing. cracking open.
he's cracked open, all because ted lasso looked at him and actually saw him. ]

"Ow. Ow, fuck me, ow." his head was throbbing. Now, admittedly, he'd taken a football to the head, kicked by a very professional player, with an awful lot around of welly behind it.
