Everyone seems to have a favourite topic in d2 (character, race, groups etc) that I love reading their analysis of and then... there's me, bouncing between 20 minor characters and 200 miniscule interactions across the destiny timeline like a scavenger.
Did you know that Tevis Larsen had apparently had an instance of direct contact with Rasputin? Where Red told him he does not care about humanity?
Or that Drifter had at some point asked Felwinter to kill the Warlord Citan that had massacred Eaton when Felwinter had already joined the Iron Lords, and been under the Iron Decree no less? And that Felwinter did it anyway?
Or that Wei Ning's fists could move mountains? That Taeko-3 was a Praxic Warlock and Eriana was one as well?
How Andal Brask died from Tallulah Fairwind slapping his shoulder the moment he got to the City? After he barfed on the watercraft Micah-10, Den-Mother-Of-Ghosts, put him to cross over the Pacific to get to the City? And how she is being hunter by the Ghost killing Guardian Cyrell while she herds Ghosts towards their new charges?
That Shaxx kicked Teben Grey and Shin Malphur (as Zyre Orsa at the time) out of the Crucible with a great many threats and how, where Andal had been almost neutral towards them, Cayde was instead pointedly dismissing the not-yet Shadows, because he and Shaxx were close?
How Pahanin kept saying puns just to annoy Kabr because he thought it funny and the piece of crumpled gum-wrapper he tossed at Praedyth's head before they walked in the Vault is still something Praedyth has.
All these little events are so important to me, and I'm not sure why.

things i've learned about Teben after our six hour session today: their 16 intellect stat does not mean they won't do things like: jump out an attic window (to escape the zombie version of Grey), stroll right into the creepy mausoleum (they don't believe in ghosts despite the aforementioned zombies), or chase after the kid whose mindscape they're all in even though they don't even know him (and subsequently fail the grapple check to get him to stay put because they have a +0 to strength). anyway i love my funky lil druid-wizard skater and their absolutely batshit decision making

For every Rose, a Thorn
Read through the lore book before progressing
So to get the big twist out of the way.
Shin Malphur is Zyre Orsa, Shin Malphur is Dredgen Vale
Pretty big twist right? Really came out of nowhere? Not really. This has been subtly hinted at ever since the Shadows were introduced with Rise of Iron.
Essentially the Shadows of Yor, as we learn from the Book of Unmaking, are recruiting Guardians to test the line between the light and dark and find someone who can responsibly wield both powers. Shin Malphur has been using his reputation to hunt down and kill Shadows who delve too deep down Sorrows road.
Drifter, officially known as Dredgen Hope, is using Gambit to tempt Guardians to the dark and begin wielding it’s power. Much in the same way that the Crucible trains Guardians to wield their light, Gambit is the opposite and is teaching Guardians how to appropriately use the dark.
So what about the whole thing about the Man with the Golden Gun? All of it’s a play, Callum willingly chose to play the part of the sacrifice in order to ‘draw out’ Shin, who has orchestrated the entire thing.
“The Shadows. The Drifter's Gambit. The seeding of fear, that the infamous "Man with the Golden Gun" was on the hunt, blinded by allegiance to the Light and gunning for all who tempt the Darkness. A necessary deception. Offering two paths in order to draw out those eager for power beyond their means. “
Everything has been a play this entire time.
But now the biggest twist of them all. The Vanguard is aware of all of this.
Yep! Zavala agrees with Vale and even he’s allowing Gambit and the Shadows to test Guardians with honing the dark. By giving Shin their silent support and continuing to supply Drifter with the necessities to run Gambit they can plead ignorance as the Shadows grow and everything progresses.
“I am burdening you with the full reality of the gambit at play because I believe in you. My earlier words. My gifting of the Last Word. That was earned. And all true. You are the future of this war. You, and a few like you, are the warriors who can walk the line between Light and Dark. And so, I ask you, are you up to the task?Or have I risked all I have struggled to build on a hero who is not yet ready to become a legend?
—S.“

*sees talyn adopt the dredgen title* YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE
Erm...I can explain, Guardian-
Listen, its a Shadows of Yor, Teben Grey, "symmetry and bending Darkness with your Light" kind of Dredgen, not a cut-and-run, "all my friends are losers lets abandon them with a rat man" kind of Dredgen.
Which is...ehhh...b-better? Right?
....right...?
