I don't understand how lace is made, but looking at the bobbins and pins and patterns … listen buddy I know math when I see it. This is A Math Thing. Obviously.
Right away I want to know:
Can I encode information in lace?
How much of an expert must one be to make your own patterns?
What about the creation of surfaces?
Knitting is more accessible, and people have been exploring math with knitting forever.
But what possibilities does lace offer?
What is the theory of lace?
An excerpt from Mathematics Magazine
Vol. 91, No. 4 (October 2018), pp. 307-309
Shows I'm hardly the first person to muse about this. Need to get my hands on the rest of this article, obviously.

I don't think I ever posted this one, so! Tatted roses motif very heavily modified from an old Finnish book I could only find on Pinterest of all places. In fact, for my next trick, I'm going to modify it even more and make it symmetrical.

My first snowflake!
I've wanted to make one for a while now but I never got around to it until yesterday when I needed to clean off some bobbins of white thread and thought it was a perfect opportunity. I'm attempting to stiffen the lace with some watered down mod podge so I can use it as a Christmas ornament and hang it on a tree

Pattern: Square Motif 2016 by Ruth Perry
My first completed tatting piece! It's about 4 inches square and took maybe 5 hours to do. Not bad, if you ask me!
Here are some of the various practice/failed pieces I've done over the last couple weeks. The black one is nylon thread. It was an interesting experiment but I found the nylon to have too much "memory" to make a secure knot.

Some tatted butterflies. I love making butterflies cause they’re super easy - you don’t even have to reverse your work - super fast, and they look really cute. These butterflies are some of the first things I ever tatted. The pattern is:
R: 7-2—2-7 CL DNR
R: 6-6 CL DNR
R: 6-6 CL DNR
R: 7-2—2-7 CL DNR
Tie ends of string in a double knot and cut to desired antennae length.
The closer you can get the rings to one another the less of a hole your butterfly will have in the middle.

A new little project I made with a Spite and Sparrow pattern, still need to add the chain and block it, but I'm super happy with it!

being a beginner and running out of thread while practicing a new pattern feels so bittersweet !
i didn't have to undo any part of this and i felt so proud, time to try again with more thread wound on ♥️ i could have added onto this one but i do love repetitive practice

Some more lace I did a few months ago and forgot to upload (please ignore the fact that I didn't sew in the ends for the second one)

i think this pattern was cursed because i had to restart twice after fucking it up to the point of no return. but it looks cool
things i tested on this motif (planned): make the rings look better by eliminating the thread gap, make the rings lay flatter, front side/back side tatting, folded join
things i tested on this motif (unplanned): how to add new thread without looking it up because i accidentally broke one of the threads and my dumb ass forgot i could just google it.

Doing some crafting over the holiday weekend! I made this tatted bookmark as a gift for my grandpa :) it needs to be blocked so it lies straight instead of crooked, but I love the way the rings look!

Tapelace - 0.6%, 2 people
Other - 0.3%, 1 person
Around 345 lacemakers voted
The data is from a poll i made last week.
link here- https://www.tumblr.com/thehistoricalfrog/709634158176223232/favorite-type-of-lacemaking-bobbin-lace-needle?source=share
The poll was to find out what are the lacemaking demographics of tumblr. After it ended i calculated roughly how meny people voted what, and the procenteges (minus the 60% of people who weren't lacemakers) . With that i made two grafs as seen above.
Thank you to everybody who voted! and to the people that expanded in the notes, thank you it was very interesting.
