The adhesive was soaked into the sponge in a gloved hand. Placing it in the mouth, it began to expand from contact with saliva, fusing to every surface of the mouth.

These were a couple transients discovered stealing from a passenger of a wooden open air bus, and when their target struggled gave a beating. Hauling them in as a vigilante, they had foulmouths and the sponges soaked in all the foulness into a pleasingly porous mass.

He inserted noseplugs which threaded breathing tubes, and when they were deep enough they expanded at the ends to stuff the throat. The sponges grew between the lips, and over the inner surface of the gag he put a massive layer of tape. The nose plugs had spikes he pressed against to pierce the tape, then removed the replaceable spike tips. The criminals tumbled around on the hard floor of his creaking wagon, wrapping up their hands individually around squeezeballs as their smooth sealed mouths flexed.

Three months later, he opened their cell. His arcane machine had etched an image of the victim's attack by copying her memory, lying on the ground crying in her draped coat which sometimes changed, and restraint collars forced them to keep looking at it on the wall. "Ready for getting released?" They gulped, locked in their confinement. He released the restraint collar and they started to move, ankles cuffed to a restraint bar. A girl and boy, they gathered around him eager to show their lesson. They didn't know what to do, so they just tried to be normal. The deviousness of the sponge gag was that it was so soft it could start to feel normal, and their jaws aimlessly stretched as if they could speak. They tried to look good, enough for freedom, but he was unimpressed. He started to lock on the collars, and they went wild. Their taped hands tangled up, they lashed out and tried to pull at him. He pushed them down and smacked their taped faces, preparing their punishment. He opened a locked cabinet in a corner of the cell and exposed two compartments with multiple restraint sections like pillories. They shook their heads urgently, mmmphing "no", and were locked in the various sections. Seeing that they responded well to adhesive, he filled the compartments with toughening goo like gelatin, loosening the sections a bit. They piercingly stared as he locked the door, the last thing they would see. Three more months for them. Now he could use the cell for another prisoner who would hear the faint noises. The victim paid him as well as a bounty board, a lucrative service.
