I was wondering what bands you liked? And out of them, which one inspires you to write music the most?

This is such a cool question to be asked, thank you! These actually feel like two pretty separate questions to me. The first one is too jumbled to answer in a Tumblr post and I don't have brain right now, but I'll try?

My first real music love was Evanescence. I was obsessed. The sheer fucking primal emotion in their music combined with Lee's aesthetic & the cinematic feel of it all was catnippp to me. My second love was Coheed & Cambria (I was in a cover band in high school), for similar reasons + they were my first exposure to concept albums. Anyone who hasn't listened to their first 3 albums *needs* to. The Dear Hunter was also an early love of mine. Their frontman (and Tanner Merritt of O'Brother, look up their first Audiotree session and sink innnn) are my vocal inspirations. Shout-outs to Panic!'s first two albums, 2000s emo in general, and especially MCR (confirming here that Helena & Gerard is an MCR reference). I was also in a Mars Volta cover band in college, which was how I started getting any kind of decent at the instrument.

More recently (in addition to frequent visits to my old favorites) I have been loving PUP, The Hotelier, Sarah & the Safeword (you all would *love* them), The Oh Hellos, Freelance Whales first album, Hozier (oh god Hozier), Typhoon, Jank (first album) O'Brother (first two albums), San Fermin, The Suitcase Junket, Devil & the Deep Blue Sea, Raccoon Tour, As Tall as Lions, Island of Misfit Toys, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Foxing, and Foxy Shazam (put on their self titled album for a fuckin' excellent time). The original Hadestown album also had a huge impact on me.

Who inspires me to write is a different question, because actually most of the songs I've written for Forgetmenauts all have specific feels of different artists that I intentionally wanted to incorporate. Imma go through the discography in order and see if I can pinpoint an inspiration for all the songs. Some are *really* specific, others just have a general feel.

Jack- Guitar riff at the beginning is Explosions in the Sky. Lyrics, guitar etc. in the second part are The Dear Hunter x Hadestown

Card Shark- Tyler wrote the music on this one! My vocals are 100% The Dear Hunter tho

The Summer King- mewithoutYou, extremely intentionally

Bigfoot & Mothman- Foxy Shazam, baybee!!!

Persephone- O'Brother (Death of the Day era)

Dancing Plague- Thrice, I think

Wind in the Orchard- O'Brother again, I think

Thomas the Rhymer- 100% I was trying to write a Hozier guitar riff again. The screams at the end are Coheed & Cambria, a la Everything Evil

Faerie Queen- I was trying to write a Tiny Moving Parts riff. The vocals & melody feel pretty original to my own style, tho.

Truth be Told- Kit did all the lyrics & melody on this one. Guitar Moving Mountains (Pneuma era)

Ocean Song- Emma wrote this one! I had no input.

Unreleased (but in rotation):

Cottonwood- This one I really felt like I was drawing on the style that I've been cultivating over the course of this FMNs project.

Rusalka- I was trying to write a Typhoon song. Their album White Lighter is one of the few *perfect* works of art that I know of.

Persephone: I wrote this one back in college, actually, for a concept album I was working on at the time that never got finished. Some Hadestown in it, for sure, otherwise I couldn't tell ya.

This is the sort of question I always fantasized about getting asked back when I was first starting to write music in high school, it's really cool to have someone who only knows me from my work honestly interested in it. I love answer things like this, thank you so much again for asking! Hope it's a thorough enough answer, and I'm happy to elaborate on any, or hear what influences or echoes you hear in any of our songs.

This last year

It’s been quite a while since I sat down to write a bit about what we’ve been up to. It’s been a different 12 months. Good. Rewarding. Different.

Jeff & Dori Hays are those rare people you meet that become the family you choose. We’ve stayed with them off and on for years. Worked for Jeff on a number of interesting projects as well. Alas, Dori came down with cancer. She was doing treatments out of state and Jeff couldn’t always be with her, Dee volunteered to take time out and go be with her. Get her to all of her appointments and just make sure all was well.

Since Dee and I want to / need to / must be together - after a while, I came down from Alaska to join her. - Dee was also going through some health challenges so being in the lower 48 and in one place was a big help for her as well.

When I showed up, Jeff hit me up with a perfect sales pitch. Something like this - “I’m glad you’re here. I have a project that’s a real career killer, but you don’t really have a career so you’ll be perfect.” How could I say no?? With that - we started on a journey to create a documentary series supporting the 2nd Amendment and gun rights. What an interesting journey. I did over 60 interviews. Victims, heroes, police, military, lobbyists, pod casters and more.

I learned so much about the gun community and met some of the very best people. So Firearms and Freedoms. Ammunition for Debate - is now a reality. (www.firearmsandfreedoms.com) It went live this week. I’m very proud of the project. Working with Jeff’s team has been such a delight as well. Just a killer group of people. While here I also took over the role of Production Coordinator - had no idea what I was doing but the gang was wonderful and helped me stay on track - I can’t thank you all enough. Love and hugs to you Elliot, Gabe, Ray,, Davis, Tanner, Porter. Cyndee, Jamie too. And the marketing department led by Kat Merritt. I’m truly blessed.

But it’s time for Dee and I to get back to our lives. We are in the midst of looking for a miracle for Dori (Jeff too) and will stay close - but it’s time for us to get back to the nomadic lifestyle that brings us such joy and adventure. So off to Alaska in a couple days. It will be wonderful to be back - but sad to leave this great group of people and all the experiences that come with working for Jeff.

My 21 Favorite Records of 2021

It’s been ... a year. Another year, in fact. Contrary to how things may seem at the present, we are not actually closing out the 24th month of an interminable 2020. 2021 came and went, and thank sweet baby jeebus that it brought a ton of great music with it.

For those of you who might be new here. I try to get out and run 3-5 days a week, listen to something new (to me), and share it with you on Instagram. It’s been great -- I get to listen to new music, share it with people who appreciate it, and get some exercise in the process. I can’t really express how beneficial and life-transforming the combination of a steady influx of great new tunes and hypnotic morning runs has been for me. Doing something repetitive enough to get your heart rate up to the point where your brain can kinda idle, and then filling that buzzing grey matter with music is magical. Maybe that something is cycling, rowing, throwing heavy things around at the gym, or just walking -- whatever will give you the space to fill your head with music. IT RULES. 10/10. Highly recommended.

A couple things before we get to THE LIST.

I’m not gonna rank any of these records, because: a) who cares, and b) I’ve done this enough over the past couple decades to know that my rankings changes literally every time I look at it. (I’m not very good at knowing when things are Actually Done.)

There will also be no blurbs for each album this year because I ran out of adjectives by doing those record recommendations on Instagram. I’d encourage you to just LISTEN to these artists instead of reading about them and then decide whether or not you dig it. Spin my 21 For 2021 Playlist or click on an album for song samples and needle-drop through a record, whatever it takes. I’d hate to discourage you with the wrong pile of words, and don’t want to overhype anything. It was was pretty damn good year for music (all things considered) and whittling my picks down to a Top 21 was as hard as it’s ever been. There’s a good chunk of these records that I’m certain I’ll have in heavy rotation for the remainder of my days on this rapidly decaying orb. Good job, music!

Marius was known throughout his life as a meticulous dresser and you can see how stylish he could look from this film. He wears a different outfit in each of these scenes. He is often seen with carnations in his buttonhole in this and later films.

Dramatis Personae (film version)

Blake Trujillo: The main protagonist. 15 years old. The responsible sibling, with a fun-loving side to him. Sometimes has to keep his sister out of trouble.

Elly Trujillo: Blake’s little sister. 10 years old. Curious and energetic, with an understanding side to her. At the beginning of the story, she can’t imagine what it’s like to grow up.

Summer Knight: African-American girl. 14 years old. Is a smart and skilled girl. Lives in the flat next to the Trujillos.

Franklin Case: Also 14 years old. A bit of a jerk to even his own sister, though he does care for her. His father passed away when he and Tanner were younger.

Tanner Case: Franklin’s younger sister. 13 years old. Sticks by her brother like glue. Is slightly more soft-hearted than him. Sometimes the voice of reason. Both siblings are raised by a single mother in the flat on the ground floor.

Ambrose: Elly’s pet rat. Though none of the kids can speak the rodent language, he has a lot to say.

Karina Berry: Leader of a group of children the protagonists meet in the Imaginarium. Seemingly 12 years old. Carries around and protects a strange marionette with the strings clipped which she calls “Julia”.

Liam Watkins: Karina’s sidekick. Seemingly 8 years old. Is more sympathetic to the protagonists’ situation.

Morgan and Megan Hendrix: African-American twins. Seemingly 11 years old. Both follow Karina without question.

Liz Merritt: Oakden’s landlady. 67 years old. Her friends vanished when she was 7 years old.

CeeCee Knight: Summer’s little brother. 6 years old. The only one of the group who doesn’t accompany the kids to the Imaginarium.

Gabe Lamb: Young writer of a journal found in the Imaginarium.

Miss Hermia Riddle: The mysterious ruler and proprietor of the Imaginarium.

Bonko: Miss Riddle’s doll-like assistant. Childlike and clownish. Introduces the kids to the Imaginarium.

Guide: The guide of the Imaginarium. Provides helpful directions to the kids. There appear to be more than one guide, but this is left ambiguous.

Tum and Tuy: The Siamese Sisters of Freak’s Town’s Dilemma Doorway. One always tells the truth, while the other always lies.
