I noticed that, in the English dub, the ADA refers to Tanizaki by his first name rather often. It's actually pretty rare to hear his last name in the dub, and I wish I knew why.
It can’t be for the simplicity of referring between him and his sister, since everyone calls her Naomi in both versions.
It’s not a logistical (“mouth-flap”) choice either, I’ve noticed them saying it even when a character is facing away, and their mouth isn’t visible, so it’s not that.
I admit that I do like the choice, since Jun’ichirou is the same age as Atsushi—who also gets referred to by his first name by the rest of the ADA. It follows the trend of calling anyone 18 and under by their first names, too, since this also applies to Kenji and Kyouka.
It may be a small change, but it’s a consistent one, so it had to have been a conscious choice.

i just think that jun’ichirou’s eyes spark sometimes, kind of like they’re glitching. it happens when he’s feeling really strong emotions, especially when he’s angry or overwhelmed

Why Light Snow is an Illusion Ability (A Theory)
(I put a Tl;dr at the end if you don’t want to read my ramblings)
Tumblr media
I’m going to start this by saying that I’m typing this out on mobile in a car so the formatting will probably be shit. I’m sorry about that. The other thing I’m going to say is that this post will have spoilers for “The Makioka Sisters” by Tanizaki Jun’ichirou, also known as “Light Snow” in Japan. I will be referring to the novel as “The Makioka Sisters” and the ability as Light Snow. I will be referring to Tanizaki from BSD as “BSD!Tanizaki” and real life Tanizaki as “RL!Tanizaki”.
So today I finished reading “The Makioka Sisters” and I had some thoughts regarding BSD!Tanizaki’s ability. This all started three weeks ago when I was re-watching BSD and I started to wonder why Light Snow was an illusion ability. From my understanding (before I read the novel), the plot of the story it’s based on wasn’t about anything related to that.
In order to figure things out I decided to read “The Makioka Sisters”. I found that I wasn’t wrong, but I wasn’t right either.
“The Makioka Sisters” is a story about (shocker, shocker), the four Makioka sisters and their family. The novel mainly follows their mission to find the third sister, Yukiko, a husband in pre-WW2 Japan.
I’m going to try not to spoil the novel too much because it’s be hard to do so while explaining my theory.
The sister I’m going to focus on is Taeko, the youngest. She’s a central piece to my theory.
Taeko starts the story as a doll maker who supports herself and is waiting for Yukiko to get married so she can get married to Okubata (also known as Kei-Boy), a man she tried to elope with ten years before the story. By the end she leaves Okubata and it’s discovered that she actually hasn’t been supporting herself as much as she makes it seem.
At the end of the story, O-Haru (a maid) informs Sachiko (the second oldest sister) that the old woman who Okubata is living with after he got kicked out from his family has solid evidence that Taeko has been spending Okubata’s money and using him to get things. The old woman claims that she’s telling O-Haru this not to cast doubt upon Taeko’s character, but to prove how much Okubata cares about her and wants to marry her.
Sachiko, who throughout the story has been getting increasingly resentful of her sisters for a plethora of reasons, falls into a despair of shame. She’s laments the fact that she’s been letting Taeko deceive her like this and how Sachiko hasn’t been able to rein her reckless sister in.
This sort of thing happens a few other times throughout the novel but that’s the point that sticks in my mind.
Back to BSD!Tanizaki. His ability is Light Snow (the Japanese/original name of the novel) and it allows him to create illusions by creating a holographic snow thing that I can’t be bothered to describe. Anyways, I don’t think I need to explain how it works because if you’re caught up on the anime/manga you’ve seen it by now.
It’s probably obvious by now but I think that Taeko’s “deception” (or at least what her sisters and family perceive as deception) translates to how Light Snow can hide things and create things via illusions.
The main part of the story is how the sisters have to cover up Taeko’s affairs (the one with Kei-Boy being one of the biggest). The other big part is how Taeko covers up her life, to the point where her own sisters don’t even know what’s going on.
Now, I don’t mean to hate on Taeko. I actually really like her character and how she was written. Mostly how she was written. RL!Tanizaki had a lot of skill with characters.
Now that I think about it, a lot of RL!Tanizaki’s stories have something to do with deception. Not that I’ve read any others besides “The Makioka Sisters”. But from what I’ve heard about them, they’re mostly about hiding things.
But that’s really it. I feel like I rambled too much. Anyways, the most likely possibility is that Asagiri wanted an illusion ability.
I really enjoy reading these stories so if there’s an ability you want to learn about but can’t be bothered to read about, feel free to ask me to do it for you. Chances are I’ll enjoy it.
Tl;dr: A character in “The Makioka Sisters” deceives her family which translates to BSD!Tanizaki’s ability to create illusions and deceive people. However, the most likely explanation is that Asagiri thought it would be cool to have an illusion ability.

Analysis of BSD Tanizaki (Character and Theories) in Reference to Real Life Tanizaki Jun’ichirou
By popular demand of (1) person in the comments of a post I’ve made briefly touching on this subject, I have compiled all of my thoughts on the portrayal of Tanizaki Jun’ichirou—and by extension, Naomi—in Bungou Stray Dogs in reference to the works of the real life Tanizaki Jun’ichirou-sensei (who I’ll be calling Tanizaki-sensei to differentiate from his fictional counterpart). Disclaimer that I don’t have the academic background to write as an expert on this subject. I will be citing all of my sources in the text.
Tanizaki-sensei (1886-1965) was an author who was well known for writing about sexual obsession and fetishes, and the exploration of Japanese versus Western culture in his works. His female characters were particularly reputable for having strong personalities (drawing upon the dofuku - “poisonous woman” or femme fatale troupe), and frequently fulfilled the domineering role in sadomasochistic relationships with men. This recurring theme is most likely the basis for Tanizaki and Naomi’s relationship in Bungou Stray Dogs.
Tumblr media
In a similar vein, motifs such as dreaming, delusions, and fantasies (oftentimes of the erotic nature) frequently appear in Tanizaki-sensei’s works. This could be the basis for Tanizaki’s illusion projection ability, “Light Snow”, which is named after Tanizaki-sensei’s great novel, Sasameyuki (1948), also known as The Makioka Sisters, the title of the English translation, which was changed due to the nuance of the original title being difficult to convey in English.
Going on a slight tangent here, Tanizaki-sensei also wrote a handful of works depicting blindness, such as A Portrait of Shunkin (1933) and A Blind Man’s Tale (1931). In these works, blindness can be interpreted as a metaphor for blind devotion and obsessive worship of one’s love interest, even to the point of martyrdom. For example, in A Portrait of Shunkin (1933), the character Sasuke destroys his own eyesight for his vain mistress, who did not want to be seen after an incident destroys her beauty. Tanizaki and Naomi’s deep affection for each other is reminiscent of these themes (Tanizaki’s willingness to throw away his morals for Naomi, Naomi taking gunfire in Tanizaki’s place).
Unfortunately, we aren’t given any other concrete pieces of information about Tanizaki or Naomi that can be reliably connected to something in regards to the real life author...
The Unreliable Narrator
Which brings me to my first point in regards to fan theories surrounding Tanizaki and Naomi. I have mentioned in previous posts that Tanizaki’s descriptions of himself oftentimes contradict what we are actually shown (not good for combat, cowardly and average, etc), which means that Tanizaki is an unreliable narrator of his own backstory. To what extent he is unreliable, we can only speculate.
Tumblr media
However, the theory that Tanizaki cannot be trusted to tell the truth about himself is supported by the real life counterparts’ use of this narrative device in his works. A journal article by The Columbia Companion to Modern East Asian Literature explains that “[Tanizaki-sensei’s stories] are often told by a personified and thus not necessarily reliable narrator,” which is especially evident in both Naomi (1925), a post-hoc account of the protagonist’s marriage, and The Key (1956), two juxtaposed diaries of a married couple.
Since Tanizaki-sensei tended to employ biased narrators in his stories, Tanizaki being an unreliable narrator of his own story would be a clever nod to his real life counterpart.
Moving on, the theory that Tanizaki may be lying about himself opens a world of possibilities regarding what the truth actually is. One popular fan theory is that Naomi is actually an illusory ability construct created by Tanizaki’s ability “Light Snow”.
Sculpting the Ideal Woman
Another recurring theme in Tanizaki-sensei’s works is a character’s desire to “shape” a woman into their vision for what that woman should be. This takes a variety of forms: in The Tattooer (1910), the protagonist “[desires] to create a masterpiece on the skin of a beautiful woman”, thus transforming her into a “real beauty”. In Aguri (1922) the protagonist dreams that “he would adorn [her] with jewels and silks. He would strip off that shapeless, unbecoming kimono... and then dress her in Western clothes”. The desire to make a woman more “Western” is also apparent with the protagonist Joji’s intent in Naomi (1925), the book that BSD Naomi is named after.
Tumblr media
However, I must caution that BSD Naomi is actually quite different from how the character of Naomi is in the original novel; BSD Naomi is kinder to the people around her, and isn’t portrayed as selfish or manipulative. The two Naomis’ do share their penchant for mischief, and their bold, tomboyish personalities, as well as their surprising intelligence and aptitude for planning.
Back to the main topic: other BSD fans have pointed out that this theme of “making Naomi” in the novel supports the theory that BSD Naomi was created by Tanizaki’s ability. Considering that this pygmalion-like desire also appears in many other stories written by Tanizaki-sensei, the connection makes sense. Notably a role reversal between the “sculptor” and the “sculpture” always takes place in such stories.
Losing Control
In Tanizaki-sensei’s stories, female characters who are transformed to fit a man’s ideal are rarely subservient by the end of the narrative. Instead, the change oftentimes pushes them into a more dominant role, where they are the ones doing the controlling, rather than being controlled. In Naomi (1925), the protagonist narrates that “I forgot my innocent notion of "training" her: I was the one being dragged along, and by the time I realized what was happening, there was nothing I could do about it.” As the alternate title, A Fool’s Love, may suggest, by the end of the book Naomi has made a fool out of the protagonist, having “made careful plans and lured [him] on”, ultimately ending up in a position of power.
This could be indicative of Naomi’s own autonomy as an ability construct: we see her arguing with Tanizaki and defying his instruction, possessing talent and knowledge that Tanizaki does not have, and making decisions independent of Tanizaki’s will. For all intents and purposes, Naomi is no different than a human being.
Tumblr media
Of course, whether or not this theory will prove correct is a different matter. It should be noted that one variation of this theory speculates that Naomi did exist as a real person, but died in middle school. Unable to cope with the loss, Tanizaki unconsciously created an illusion in her image. This idea is reminiscent of A Portrait of Shunkin (1933), where it is said that in the years after Sasuke’s mistress and lover passed away, “he created a Shunkin quite remote from the actual woman, yet more and more vivid in his mind.” The character Sasuke was said to exaggerate his mistress’ talents to the point that his accounts of her were unreliable, and her passing contributed to his over imagination of her likeliness.
Secret Relationships
Another theory I have seen circulating the fandom is that Naomi and Tanizaki lied about their relationship, telling others that they are siblings in order to cover up their romance. In Naomi (1925), a similar ruse is hatched by the character Naomi, who goes behind her husband Joji’s back and sleeps with other men. Joji discovers this subterfuge from the character Hamada, who confesses, “I didn't know about you at all. Miss Naomi...said you were her cousin.” As such, Tanizaki and Naomi may similarly be lying about the nature of their relationship, which would be a nod to the original novel.
Of course, though I am partial to this theory, since I would be sad if Naomi turned out to be an illusion, I cannot with any confidence claim that it is more likely than the other theory I mentioned regarding her, or any other theories that might be circulating.
Return from the West
Moving on from theories involving Naomi, evidence that supports the theory that Tanizaki will change allegiances from the Armed Detective Agency to the Port Mafia can also be found with his real life counterpart. As I touched on a bit before, Tanizaki-sensei wrote about and was influenced by Western culture and traditions. However, after Tanizaki-sensei moved from Yokohama to the Kansai region in 1926, his fascination dwindled, and he completed works such as Some Prefer Nettles (1929), which “[presented] subtly and effectively the great transformation in Tanizaki's life from a worshiper of the West to a believer in the value of the Japanese heritage” as explained by Donald Keene in “Five Modern Japanese Novelists”.
One such work that compared Western and Japanese culture is “In Praise of Shadows” (1933), which associated shadows with traditional Japanese aesthetics, and light with the West. In the essay, he writes “If light is scarce then light is scarce; we will immerse ourselves in the darkness and there discover its own particular beauty.” In Bungou Stray Dogs, darkness and shadows are associated with the Port Mafia, while the light is associated with living morally upright. As such, Tanizaki-sensei’s shift from his fascination with the West (the light) to finding beauty in the darkness (Japanese traditions) could be paralleled in his fictional counterpart switching sides as well.
Tumblr media
Moreover, although I am far from informed enough to speak confidently on this subject, I’d be amiss not to mention this meta written by bsd-bibliophile, which explains how the Port Mafia authors were faithful to the styles of traditional Japanese literature, whereas Armed Detective Agency authors were influenced by Western writing. Coincidentally, or perhaps intentionally, the comparison of Japanese versus Western traditions is the subject matter of “In Praise of Shadows” (1933), as I explained above; it would be a very clever reference to Tanizaki-sensei’s shifting interest if the theory that Tanizaki will switch sides ends up being correct.
In Conclusion
Despite knowing very little of Tanizaki’s backstory, and having limited on screen appearances of him in the story, much of what is established about Tanizaki can be traced back to his real life counterpart. We can also attempt to reverse engineer the character Tanizaki by making conjectures about his backstory and future character development based on what we know about Tanizaki-sensei. The theories that Naomi is an illusion, Tanizaki and Naomi are not real siblings, and that Tanizaki will switch sides are all supported by themes, motifs, and narratives that frequently appeared in Tanizaki-sensei’s writing. As such, I am very excited to see which theories will prove true, and how Asagiri-sensei will execute them in Bungou Stray Dogs going forward.

We need to discuss the Tanizaki siblings
Putting aside the fact on how they act with each other we see that they are both very capable on their own with Naomi’s smarts and Jun’ichirou’s capability with his ability and he seems to have street smarts
In these official art Juni is frowning and has a somewhat cold expression while Naomi is either smiling or her face is monotones and as little expression
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In only one of these arts we see Jun’ichiro and Naomi with a school uniform and in that art we see that they both have a monotone expression this leads me to think this has something to do with school. Like maybe something happened during school or it shows how young they may have been for the next part of my theory
In the other to arts we see they have clothes that you would usually see on those who come from a prestigious and classic Japanese family (like Kyouka who we saw was from a classic family that “from what we can assume” was prestigious or koyou who wears similar clothes) I know that one of the official arts is (I’m pretty sure) a reference to a book are a piece for a book from the irl Tanizaki but I feel I kinda gives us a clearer path on what their backstory is. This evidence kinda leads me to believe that maybe Juni and Naomi might have been from a family that was kinda like Kyouka’s except with all the killing/murderous parents. I know this seems really far fetched but with the background of the last photo it really kinda has me believe that this might be a little bit true
I also think that something may have happened to them when they were younger to make them act the way they do and for them to be living alone at their age (we know that Juni and Atsushi are the same age/is 18 and that Naomi is maybe 2 years younger or a bit younger)
I have a feeling their parents are either dead or something happened to them for them to be by themselves or they had run away from home
I made a post on explaining or mentioning how Haruno may play a huge or minor role in their backstory be it to the fact that she seems close the Tanizaki siblings or at least Naomi.
But it won’t let post the url or link for some reason I will have that pst pinned same with this one if you would like to read it
Edit: never mind i CANT pin two post so the Haruno playing a role in the Tanizaki sibling post will be the one pinned I will try and put the url in the Haruno post tho

spotify wrapped drawing game!
basically, send me a number between 1-100, as well as either a character or relationship from BSD listed in this post under the cut, and i’ll draw a scenario for them based on that song :) the ask will be answered with the scenario i plan on drawing and will be tagged with #bsd spotify art meme. it’s random as i’m not including what songs go with what numbers hehe so good luck! if the same number is sent twice i’ll just answer and ask you to choose another number instead of giving a scenario tho cause i don’t wanna do the same song twice as theres 100 possibilities. as for the ships/characters you can send!
any character in BSD or OC of mine included in the following list of ships is, by the way, 100% okay to send with someone else platonically that they’re not shipped with! just make it clear in your ask what the implied nature of their relationship should be please. i’m not a pr/-sh/pper, so i don’t ship nor support anything incestuous or adult/minor.

hi hi!! is it okay to request some affection head canons for tanizaki and a female reader?
Honestly, I really do love both the Tanizaki’s... even if they are a little...yeah.
Since you didn’t specify which sibling you wanted, I’m going to go with Jun’ichirou. If that’s not who you wanted feel free to send in another ask!
Headcannons under the cut!
Tumblr media
Jun'ichirou Affection Headcannons with a Fem!S/O
just note, he’ll never do these things in public he’s too easily flustered for that rip
but if you’re in the comforts of your own home, he won’t hold back
he’s definitely a sucker for back hugs, I just know it
if you’re shorter than him, he loves being able to place soft kisses on your forehead
if you’re the same height or taller than him, he’ll place the kisses along the column of your neck
not in like a sensual way, but more of a soft way
out in public, the most he can do without nearly combusting is holding your hand
but he prefers to link pinkies
says it’s much cuter <3
every now and then the two of you share a kiss in the hallway between jobs, nothing to write home about, honestly
nose boops are definitely a thing between you two
sorry, I don’t make the rules
it’s so adorable it’s almost sickening
cuddles.
do I really have to say anything?
Jun’ichirou really enjoys being able to wrap his arms around you (or vice versa, he really doesn’t care) after another tiring day of dealing with all the weirdos at the agency
however, in spite of all this, his affection shines brightest through his words
whispered ‘I love you’s
heartfelt compliments
he really does have a way with words
he may not be as smooth as Osamu or as charming as Atsushi
but you can always tell that his words come from the heart
“Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?” He mumbled against your shoulder one morning, the sun just barely peaking through the curtains as the two of you got ready for the day. Or, at least tried to get ready.
You hummed, reaching your hand up to fiddle with the lone clip that resided in his hair, “I believe so, but maybe you should jog my memory a little.”
Tumblr media
Sorry if I didn’t really capture his personality correctly as well as the extremely long wait... I hope you liked them <3

BSD in ATLA
I used to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender a lot when I was a kid and still love the show. I’m a bit late, but in celebration of it being brought to Netflix and resurgance in its popularity, I’ve decided to do a quick crossover. Especially since they both have ‘powers’ in their lore. POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE ATLA SERIES (not The Legend of Korra)!
* I will be considering the personalities and canon backstories of BSD characters
FUKUZAWA YUKICHI
Waterbending (bloodbending, healing)
ETHNICITY: Water Tribe, Air Nomad
HOMETOWN: Southern Water Tribe
Fukuzawa was taken from the Southern Water Tribe during one of the raids and Hama taught him to bloodbend. They escaped together -- except he didn’t go down the dark path that she did. He’s much more of a healer now, both figuratively and literally.
EDOGAWA RANPO
Non-bender
ETHNICITY: Earth Kingdom
HOMETOWN: Omashu
He and Bumi raise heck together. You can’t tell me otherwise. Ranpo and Fukuzawa met when the latter traveled throughout the Earth Kingdom.
YOSANO AKIKO
Earthbending (metalbending)
ETHNICITY: Earth Kingdom, Water Tribe
HOMETOWN: Kyoshi Island
She hung out with the Kyoshi Warriors very often. Again, you can’t tell me that she wouldn’t be over-the-moon with them. One of her parents was a waterbender skilled enough to heal and, when they found out Yosano was a bit jealous, taught her medicine. She met Ranpo and Fukuzawa when they were continuing their travels throughout the Earth Kingdom, a nurse in a deep depression because she’s not a waterbending healer. (General Fong reminds me of Mori in the sense of forcing people to overuse their powers in a war.) They decided to create an organization similar to the White Lotus.
IZUMI KYŌKA
Earthbender (seismic sense)
ETHNICITY: Earth Kingdom
HOMETOWN: a small village near the Serpent’s Pass
Kyо̄ka was raised near the Serpent, so of course she’s tough. Her family were spies (either for the Fire Nation or the Water Tribes / Earth Kingdom) and used seismic sense to help with that. Due to their jobs, they moved around a lot until they were eventually killed. When visiting Kyoshi Island with Atsushi, Kyо̄ka loved the Unagi and Elephant Koi. She and Yosano even rode them together. Atsushi was terrified. Kyо̄ka later trained with Piandao.
NAKAJIMA ATSUSHI
Airbender
ETHNICITY: Air Nomad
HOMETOWN: The Southern Air Temple
Due to accidentally causing destruction to the temple (many times) he was sent to the Northern Air Temple. Atsushi was too scared to stay in the the Western Air Temple because it’s upside-down. The Fire Nation attacked before he could reach the northern temple and decided to stay in the village he’d been flying over -- which just so happened to be Kyо̄ka’s. They travelled together until they met up with the others as the newest members.
MIYAZAWA KENJI
Airbender (spirit projection)
ETHNICITY: Air Nomad
HOMETOWN: Eastern Air Temple
He grew up with Guru Patik and mastered his chakras at quite an early age, also a survivor of the Airbender Genocide. (Thus, he lived a pretty sheltered life away from big cities.) Kenji wanted to help in the war so that the Airbender Genocide wouldn’t happen in a similar way to the other nations.
KUNIKIDA DOPPO
Earthbending
ETHNICITY: Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation
HOMETOWN: Ba Sing Se
His father was part of the Dai Li. ‘Nuff said. Kunikida wanted to become a government official until he uncovered the corruption in Ba Sing Se. As a result, he changed his drive to fighting off the Fire Nation -- once he heard about the war; thanks, Dai Li -- and met the others that way. He was also the last to learn of Dazai’s past and ethnicity.
OSAMU DAZAI
Firebending (lightningbending)
ETHNICITY: Fire Nation
HOMETOWN: { IDK any big Fire Nation cities. Not a colony, though }
Dazai left the Fire Nation military after they killed a very close airbender friend of his (Oda). He changed sides to pay homage to him, joining the others, and doesn’t particularly like bending (similarly to Jeong-Jeong).
TANIZAKI NAOMI + JUN’ICHIRŌ
Non-bender + Waterbender
ETHNICITY: Water Tribe
HOMETOWN: Northern Water Tribe
They had a relatively normal past. (We don’t know much about the Tanizaki siblings’ backstories.) The siblings, tired of the tribe’s sexism, eventually left (like Kana, Katara’s grandmother) for the Earth Kingdom and decided to help in the war when they saw what was happening; the Water Tribes are pretty isolated, after all.

Rewatching this series has allowed me to notice the quite frankly hilarious exchange between Kunikida & Jun’ichirou during Atsushi’s entrance exam.
Jun’ichirou is trying to act tough with threatening Kunikida until he—out of nowhere, says this shit:
Tumblr media
And Kunikida, understandably, is like excuse me??
Tumblr media
Now, you can see the exact moment Jun’ichirou realizes he fucked up. Idk how much improv experience Tanizaki has, but I doubt he intended to make his demand that kinky, and it shows.
Tumblr media
But it’s too late to change his bad boy act now, so he doubles down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point, you can tell Kunikida takes a moment to lower his blood pressure, before he just resigns with a “this may as well happen” sort of face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like IMAGINE. You tell your colleague to pretend to be a psycho bomber and he asks you to do THIS shit??? Like Tanizaki do you have something you wanna share with the class?
Tumblr media
You gotta hand it to Kunikida for keeping a straight face the whole time though, goddamn. He may be a tightass, but he committed to that role.

one of the reasons why the ‘Naomi is an ability construct’ theory is skeptical to me a.k.a. reasons I am biased towards bc I don’t want Naomi to be dead is that “in the book Joji tried to groom Naomi into his ideal woman” was not my takeaway after I finished the novel...
(spoiler for those who plan to read the book)
Though that was Joji’s intention at the start, he failed spectacularly, and by the end of the book, it was really Naomi that had self actualized and grown independent of Joji. But of course interpretation of the novel is debatable. but!!!! the point I’m trying to make is that it would be so contrary to what Tanizaki-sensei writes about if (bsd) Naomi was fully dependent on Jun’ichirou; if Naomi is an ability construct, it would make sense that she’s become her own person somewhere along the way, being able to exist independently.
On that subject though (sorry just blogging my unfiltered thoughts on the theory for those who followed me for Tanizaki content)
If you look to other works by Tanizaki-sensei, the concept of a woman being groomed to fit someone’s vision/fantasy does pop up more than once. See The Tattooer (1910) and Aguri (1922) for examples, but in both cases it could be argued that the woman is not the one being controlled at the end of the story, but rather, the roles are always reversed.
I also read the A Portrait of Shunkin (1933) in which, after the female protagonist passes away, her lover is said to “[create] a Shunkin quite remote from the actual woman, yet more and more vivid in his mind” which would fit with the theory quite nicely.
tl;dr when I said that the theory isn’t any more or less likely than one of mine,
