Okay hi, so I just need to scream about this one bojere coded song we’ve completely missed
Kun uni haparoivin sormin luomet yhteen sulattaa
Tulet mieleen huolettomin askelin
On jälleen kesäyö ja rannan tuoksu tihkuu kuusamaa
Hymyilet taas niin kuin silloinkin
En enää muista kasvojas tai mitä mulle sanoitkaan
Mutta muistan miten katsoit
Miten sait mut hehkumaan
//
Kun katsoit minuun
Kaiken muun mä unohdin
Kun katsoit minuun
Vain sinun olla halusin
Kun katsoit minuun
Sytyin sylissäs ja paloin
Silloin rakastaa sua aloin
Kun sä katsoit minuun hetken niin
I’m just gonna leave this stuff here okay byeeee

UMK 2024 Song Review - Sara Siipola
The hype is very real around Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the Finnish national selection for Eurovision and the race to Malmö continues with a ballad this time!
Sara Siippola - Paskana
youtube
Sara Siipola is fairly a new name in the sky of Finnish female artists. She kind of popped out of nowhere making a record deal with Sony Music in 2019 and releasing her first singles which were fairly successful. She also released her debut album "Kaunis Kun Itken" two years later and last year she was seen in popular music tv-show "Tähdet, Tähdet".
Still never heard of of her before and the artist announcement did nothing to me.
Tumblr media
Paskana is power song that gives no hope. It's very raw lyrically and vocally.
It's a modern ballad with immediate hook. The song itself is not a traditional power ballad but does instrumentally push its boundaries. The electronic beat has 80's sound which also reminds many of the Russian girl duo t.A.T.u's sound. R'n'b beat separates it from an average ESC ballad and makes this super easy to listen.
Sara's voice can be compared to Amy Winehouse's being capable of interpreting the painful text brilliantly. The topic of being "paskana" which is translated as fucking wreck, is easily relatable. Social media quickly filled on Monday night with heartfelt comments from people around the world crying and feeling this song.
This is simply captivating - you can't pass this without stopping to listen to this and feeling what she sings. This will translate across language barriers.
ESC doesn't allow swearing so in case of winning UMK Sara would have to find another title for her song which might be a difficult task. There have been hopes of her translating this into English or pieces of it but I do hope this masterpiece remained in Finnish. Also this would differ quite a lot from our previous ESC entries. The last time we heard a female ballad from Finland was in 2017 with NormaJohn.
In a scenario where she didn't win UMK she might be the next Bess (Ram pam pam, 2022) or Kuumaa (Ylivoimainen, 2023) which either were the winning acts but made the biggest hits of their careers with the help of UMK. Reactions have been positive everywhere you go and her UMK videoclip has already been viewed over 240 000 (more than Sexmane) times. She's on her way to stardom!
What do you think of the third UMK24 track and would you vote for Sara Siipola to go all the way to Malmö? UMK final takes place on February 10th!

Finnish actor/comedian/dancer/leftist politician Riku Nieminen performed Cha Cha Cha on the tv show Tähdet Tähdet tonight. Tähdet Tähdet is a competition where singers (and nowadays other entertainment professionals) compete who's the best performer/entertainer. There's a different genre/theme for each episode. Tonight's episode's genre was Eurovision.

International stars are waiting in Finland for fans who are in a debt of gratitude
Louis Tomlinson came to Finland unlike many other big stars, and that's why he has exceptionally grateful fans here.

BRITISH ARTIST Louis Tomlinson performed on Monday evening at the Helsinki Ice Hall. Finally, if you ask the fans.
I followed the atmosphere before the gig in front of the ice rink. Excitement was in the air as fans finished fan projects for the artist, purchased fan merchandise and lined up for permanto spots.
One thing was repeated in the fans' speeches: Louis is wonderful because he cares about his fans and also visits smaller countries on his tours that many miss.
In recent years, Finland has also increasingly been included in the countries falling in between.
MONDAY's show is Tomlinson's first appearance in Finland as a solo artist. The last time he took the stage in Finland was in 2015 as part of the boy band One Direction.
Later that year, the band went on a long hiatus, which in a way is still ongoing, because the band has never officially said that they have stopped. The band members started working on their solo career, and they haven't been seen in Finland since.
For example, One Direction's arguably most famous member, Harry Styles, performed in the summer of 2022 in Stockholm and Oslo. Finland had to miss out. Next spring [2024], the Irishman Niall Horan's tour, another member of the band, will cover Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but he will not be seen on the other side of the Gulf of Bothnia.
Of course, the problem is not limited to the members of the most popular boy band of the 2010s.
HS already reported last summer that big names are now touring Finland from far away. The problem is especially that Helsinki lacks a modern indoor arena, while Helsinki Hall is on the banned list due to its Russian owners.
It has also always been geographically more difficult to come to Finland than, for example, Sweden, where you can continue from Denmark. Instead, a ferry connection is needed to Finland, because the gig equipment cannot be moved through Russia.
Finns accept their fate in a kind of "no need to cook for me" spirit. However, if a world star gets lost on his tour all the way here, we feel at least a slight debt of gratitude towards the artist.
Finland's problems did not hinder TOMLINSON's tour.
At Monday's gig, the gratitude of the fans hardly went unnoticed: in the course of a couple of hours, several fan projects made by the audience were seen, some of which were already planned last year.
In one of them, the fans raised signs in the air that read "Thank you for having faith in Finland", i.e. thank you for believing in Finland.
After the concert in Helsinki, Tomlinson headed to Tallinn and Riga. Today, Friday, he will perform in Kaunas, which is the second largest city in Lithuania. In terms of population, Kaunas is slightly larger than Tampere.
Otherwise, you would find a modern indoor arena there.

hey, do you have any recommendations of queer/queer-adjacent finnish music? if not, it's okay, no pressure
Hey anon, sorry for the late reply! 💕
Let me preface this by saying that since the Finnish language doesn’t have gendered personal pronouns, a lot of songs are open for interpretation when it comes to gender and sexuality! So, I opted to go for some songs that are very clearly queer coded, and also to give you a few examples Finnish artists who are part of the LGBTQ community!
Again, for any finns who may be reading this, please feel free to add onto the list!
Here’s the tldr version with links to the songs:
Ihmisten edessä by Jenni Vartiainen (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
(Mentioned in relation: Jenny by Studio Killers) (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
Hoida Mut by Benjamin (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
Kuuma jäbä by Isaac Sene (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
Cicciolina (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) and Syntisten pöytä (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by Erika Vikman
Tähdet, taivas ja sä by Saara Aalto (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
(Mentioned in relation: Monsters by Saara Aalto) (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
2080-luvulla, (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) Hei kevät (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) and Pornoo (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by SANNI (though her discography in general is pretty great. Especially her album Sotke Mut has many good songs imo.)
Sydämeni osuman sai (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by Siiri Nordin (out of her albums I personally enjoy Lyö tahtia the most.)
(Sydämeni osuman sai is a cover of the song Something’s Gotten Hold of my Heart written by Roger Greenway and Roger Cook.)
Rakkautta ja Piikkilankaa (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by Sini Yasemin
(Cover of the song Rakkauta ja Piikkilankaa by Uniklubi) (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) (Fun fact I absolutely adored this song as a kid lol)
First off, I think it’s essential to start with the Finnish lesbian anthem: ”Ihmisten edessä” by Jenni Vartiainen. This song is really important for many people my age, as it was pretty much ”Baby’s first exposure to non-het relationships” to a lot of people. The song is an absolute banger, and, fun fact, was written and composed by Teemu Brunila, who is believed to be the voice behind Studio Killers’ singer Cherry. Thus it’s likely that he may even have been involved in the creation of Jenny, which is another lesbian anthem.
Then we have our UMK contestants who didn’t quite make it to the Eurovision like Benjamin who competed with the song ”Hoida Mut” in 2023, Isaac Sene who competed with the song ”Kuuma jäbä” in 2022, and Erika Vikman, who competed in 2020 with the song ”Cicciolina”. Out of these three, Hoida Mut and Kuuma jäbä make it obvious that they’re about gay relationships, while Cicciolina is open for interpretation (which may be because Erika is bisexual). Of course, there is also Saara Aalto, who competed in the Eurovision song contest in 2018 with ”Monsters”.  Out of her songs that are in Finnish, I personally like the song ”Tähdet, taivas ja sä” the most.
One of my favourite Finnish LGBTQ artists is SANNI. Some of my favourite songs by her are 2080-luvulla, Hei kevät, and Pornoo.
The singer Siiri Nordin is also LGBTQ. Her cover of the song "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart”, called ”Sydämeni osuman sai” is very lovely.
I can’t say I’m super familiar with the career of Sini Yasemin, however she is an emerging LGBTQ artist whose work is also worth looking into! Her cover of Rakkautta ja piikkilankaa (originally performed by the rock group Uniklubi) is probably a safe place to start if you want to get a grasp of her sound.
Again, for anyone who can come up with more songs/artists, feel free to add onto this!

i don't know if this machine-assisted translation is fully accurate (since it tried to translate the title Ninnilaulu to "Lullaby" but it should be "Ninny's song" riight), i hope it is because i cried;;
The sea is so blue, a school of fish glides, over the open waves, carried by the breeze. The wind tousles your hair, whispering in the garden. Days and years are left behind, in the whole wide world. What will it be like, where you are heading? Will you miss anything, will you see the same stars? If you have a couple of friends, by your side at times, you can explain everything and show your emotions. The day shines, the land blooms, as you walk by the riverbank. You cannot always anticipate who will offer friendship. Shed tears of sorrow, overcome your troubles with them. You may get angry, as long as you do not harm others. Winter, spring, and summer pass, then the autumn frost comes. Soon the land will be free of snow, underneath your footsteps. A little bell jingles, it is near you. The wind rises, it roars, bringing your loved ones here. In the world, there is much distress for the little ones. You quietly sneak in rooms, finding no courage. But play, sing, smile, so you won't disappear, so your heart's radiance can reach everyone.
original 🇫🇮 under the cut
Meri on niin sininen, kalaparvi kiitää, yli aavan laineiden tuulenhenki liitää. Tuuli tukkaa liehuttaa, kuiskii puutarhassa. Päivät, vuodet jäävät taa koko maailmassa. Millaista on aikanaan siellä minne lähdet? Talvi, kevät, kesä on, sitten syksyn halla. Pian on maa taas lumeton askeltesi alla. Pieni tiuku kilisee, se on kohdallasi. Tuuli nousee, kohisee, tuo tänne rakkaimpasi. Pienelle on maailmassa paljon ahdistusta. Hiivit hiljaa huoneissa, et löydä uskallusta. Vaan leiki, laula, hymyile, jottet katoaisi, jotta loistaa kaikille sydämesi saisi.

Ilmoni seurasi auringon laskeutumista mereen. Tie Nummen kirkon kellonsoittajan pojasta tänne oli pitkä. Oliko kukaan suomalainen aiemmin kiivennyt tänne tähystelemään Välimeren maisemia, tästä ei ole varmaa tietoa. Ilmoni keräili vuoren rinteiltä mineraaleja mukaansa ja yöpyi Casa Inglesen luona. Hän oli mietteissään. Tähdet loistivat niin kirkkaina.
