Primero de todo, no soy un superhardcore de juegos de carreras, soy muy fan de The Crew y ya, este estaba rondando por mi biblioteca de Steam (probablemente de un Humble Bundle, muy probablemente) y algo en mi dijo “meh, por que no?”.

La verdad es que me ha gustado mas de lo que esperaba, tampoco esperaba mucho pero entretiene y en lineas generales esta bien hecho, bueno, tiene un par de problemas gordos. Para empezar si subes el anti aliasing se buggea y solo muestra una pantalla negra y verde, pero bueno me lo tomare como un minijuego de navegar por los menús a ciegas hasta que lo arreglas y no se si sera solo a mi (lo cual es altamente probable) pero por alguna extraña razón solo se ejecutaba en modo ventana y no tiene opción a cambiarlo en el juego, ni fullscreen ni borderless y se hace un poco incomodo jugar con la barrita blanca de la ventana ahí arriba, todo el rato, impasible, como si te juzgase, y el cursor que siempre sale misteriosamente del escondite en el que lo metiste nada más iniciar el juego (porque obviamente eres un ser inteligente y juegas con mando) y ahí están los dos regodeándose en la vergüenza que supone no poder sumergirse completamente en el juego.

En fin, que me voy por las ramas, el juego en si esta bien, gráficamente no es nada del otro mundo pero oye es del 2011 no se le puede pedir gran cosa, aun así los coches están sorprendentemente bien hechos y detallados y el entorno tampoco se queda atrás, la iluminación es genial, en los circuitos de noche incluso es bonito, aunque a veces las sombras hacen cosas raras; lo cual hace que me irrite mucho mas el modelado de las personas, es jodidamente horrible, al nivel del público del Fifa 2008, y ni siquiera lo disimula; en la linea de salida tienes: tu coche, bonito, impoluto, con el sol centelleando en tu carrocería cromada; y al lado el señor que da la salida, cuyo brazo no se mueve mas allá de 45 grados y su cara es un borrón informe, es muy disonante, no estoy pidiendo que se trabajen todos y cada uno de los señores espectadores, que la mayoría de las veces los pasas a 120km/h y ni te fijas, solo los tres papanatas que están en la salida.

Jugablemente, y vuelvo a recalcar que no soy ningún experto en la materia, me ha gustado, la historia es lo que es, típica de un juego de este palo, eres corredor y corres, simple, punto, que no es algo necesariamente malo ni bueno, lo que es malo son las gymkhanas, las odio profundamente con todo mi ser, entiendo que existan para que no resulte repetitivo y porque no puedes hacer un juego arcade(ish) de carreras y no poner derrapes, saltos y piruleos del estilo pero se me hacia una tortura el intentar hacerlas. En cuanto a mecánicas y eso me ha gustado mucho, el sistema de daños es, y se que va a sonar extraño, reconfortante, me explico, el llegar a meta último con las llantas  de las ruedas delanteras al aire y el frontal destrozado me produce una cierta sensación de satisfacción, obviamente me merezco quedar último por conducir sin cuidado, o momentos en los que te has cargado la dirección y no hay un dios que gire ese coche a la derecha; no se, en cierto sentido me alegra que el conducir como un demente tenga consecuencias; una cosa que agradezco es la ausencia de nitro, obviamente no esta porque no es de carreras urbanas al margen de la legalidad, pero me voy a permitir desahogar mi frustración con el nitro en los juegos de carreras, en mi opinión y experiencia es un lastre, es una comodidad innecesaria, es el juego diciendo “vaya parece que no sabes tomar las curvas, bueno no hace falta que aprendas, espera una recta y pulsa este botón” igual le estoy pidiendo demasiado al jugador medio pero creo que una de las bases de un juego es aprender a jugar ese titulo en concreto, y en el caso de los juegos de conducción uno de los fundamentos es familiarizarse con tomar las curvas bien, y si al jugador le estas permitiendo que se estampe en una curva y con pulsar un botón recupere los puestos que ha perdido por ser un inútil, que sentido tiene aprender?. Volviendo a Dirt 3 una de las cosas que mas me ha gustado ha sido el copiloto, parece una tontería pero escuchar las indicaciones ayuda y en trazados largos no te sientes tan solo gracias a sus comentarios, sobre todo cuando te pasas de frenada y te chocas de costado a 80 km/h y te dice “ha sido un rasguño”... un rasguño? un rasguño?!!?, compañero se acaba de caer la puerta, o eres extremadamente optimista a unas cotas peligrosas para tu salud y la de los que te rodean, o tienes problemas de visión, en cuyo caso no me siento muy cómodo con que seas mi copiloto.

En fin, idas de olla aparte es un juego bastante solido, redondo y completo, en parte genérico pero con un margen a personalización técnica de tu vehículo antes de cada carrera muy interesante, la campaña (por llamarla de algún modo) me ha llevado 24 horas y aparte tiene multijugador y modo juega por jugar que para alguien como yo es mas que suficiente.

Confederates in the Attic, p. 71-144

We read three chapters for this blog.  This first chapter couple chapters touch upon the debate over the flag.  The first chapter we see the debate over if the flag should be flow over government buildings.  In this chapter, we meet a South Carolina man named Walt.  Walt is a character to say the least.  He's a vegetarian who is very passionate about his beliefs.  Walt basically likes anything the government does not, and he hates anything the government wants to do.  On example is that he liked the rap group 2 Live Crew because a government official wanted to ban one of their albums because of the lyrics.  In the next chapter, the flag debate is shown in Kentucky.  Michael Westerman is the topic of this chapter.  He was shot and killed by a group of black teenagers because he was driving a truck sporting the rebel flag.  It was said that someone from Michael Westerman’s truck yelled a racial slur while shaking the flag, which in turn, provoked the black teenagers.  Stories about Michael’s past, to me, can support this claim.  His wife, who was with Michael when he was shot, disputed this though.  We do see that two of the black teenagers were convicted of murdering Michael Westerman.  In the third and final chapter we read, Tony Horowitz is in Virginia at a reenactment.  He is at home with the farbs that make up this reenactment.  These people who are at this reenactment aren’t the hardcores we saw earlier in the book.  They aren’t soaking their buttons in fresh urine or spooning other men.  They are loving what they are doing though and do comment on why people have to be so hardcore when this is just a hobby.  The legend himself, Robert Hodge, is present at the reenactment, scouting for new hardcore recruits.

I do want to focus on Walt, who we saw in chapter four.  He is the vegetarian who doesn’t trust the government.  He’s the first real character, if I’m remembering correctly, who just hates people outright.  He uses the flag to hate.  In the past chapters we are meeting people who see the flag as a way to connect with their ancestors.  There might be some hate for others, but most of the people are doing this because they love their family.  This man doesn’t even try to cover it up.  Walt’s very outspoken on his hate for others and for the government.  He didn’t like blacks unless they were on his side.  One thing that struck me was that he liked a black rap group just because a government official wanted to ban their album.  He put away his hate for a minority, for a second, just to stick it to the government.  That was very interesting to me.

My question:  People are holding onto their Confederate culture.  They believe it is only halftime for the war.  Do you think people in the south really want another war?
