Hmm that's a good question. If you're asking is it a tragedy and should you read it, the short answer is no it's all just action & adventure with a hopeful ending so yes you should read it. But the long answer is: i think at the heart of it, it truly is a tragedy in so many ways - the whole story is essentially built upon countless tragedies that ultimately lead to a satisfying ending, but only in the long way round.

I'd even say that's one of its main themes: how many tragedies can you bear to live through on your way to the end? how many tragedies can you rightfully cause just to reach the desired ending? Even the ending itself is up for interpretation - it definitely holds a hopeful tone, and the whole narrative (an incredibly meta one, as you'll see) plays out in such a way that the ending only exists in the form you want it to be. Which I choose to believe is a happy ending, but even in the most optimistic interpretation, the epilogue itself is shrouded in a kind of desperation that you can't escape from.

It's definitely a tragedy to see the world destroyed in countless timelines. Is it also a tragedy to live through the apocalypse and willingly choose to sacrifice your happy ending just to go through it all again for just one person, who may be lost forever? Is it a tragedy to gain your happy ending with almost no effort, only to throw it all down the drain on the off-chance of meeting someone you have never seen in the flesh before, thereby arguably initiating the entire chain of tragedies in uncountable branching timelines? And is it a tragedy to inadvertently conceive this very tragedy-filled universe with your own hands, and be forced by the narrative to repeat the cycle for all eternity?

I don't know. I think the novel itself is asking those questions too. But also: yes it's a tragedy but it's also a comedy and it's also a tragicomedy it's a drama it's just an isekai it's a romance it's a satire it's a fable it's a homeric epic it's a metanarrative. hello! I just read both of your “you’re joking,right?” and they are so, so good! I cant help but keep re-reading them aahh!!

It angers me that in Nagi’s story, it appears that Nagi had barely shown much interest in the meeting that Nagi and Reo forced to have and put barely any effort in making amends. Like, Reo, who wasn’t even the reader’s ex was the one who was putting in WAY more effort than Nagi did! Like, bro, get of your video games and have a conversation with the reader instead of ignoring them for the first few minutes of your arrival, especially when you were HALF AN HOUR late! I know it want under your control since your fans were surrounding you or whatever, but like, shot the reader a quick text?? If the meet up was oh so important to you, you’d have the decency to play your video game for another time, even if you were promised to be able to finish it earlier and couldn’t. Also, also, how dare you even be jealous of how the reader could possibly have a bf when you was the one who broke it off?? Also, what do you mean “Your retreating figure was the only thing he could focus on as a swell of frustration bubbled up in his gut. (…) At that moment he vowed to never feel that way again.“ What do you mean by that Nagi, huh?! You’re the one who wasn’t hurt in this situation, you should be focusing on not hurting them again!!

Like, the thing with Nagi (and Reo) that infuriates me personally is the fact that instead of communicating that he felt smother by the reader, he decided to hurt them. Communication is such an important thing in a relationship, and judging by how he acted throughout the story, I can’t help but think that this kind of behaviour will continue if he and the reader got back together. Cause like, it doesn’t appear to be that he has changed or acknowledge what he (and Reo) put them through and just expect the reader to just get back together with him cause HE suddenly wants them to be. It just selfish and shows that he doesn’t really care about the reader’s feelings. It feels so odd to me of the excuse that Reo gave where Nagi broke up with the reader as a way to be able to provide for the reader in the future because it’s just, such a bad plan realistically, and just seems like, I don’t know, a sort of manipulative way to make Nagi look better in the readers eyes. Also, it’s annoys me that both Nagi and Reo, at least I don’t remember them doing, ever once apologized about their abandonment and behaviour towards the reader, which leads me to believe that they think that what they did wasn’t wrong, or just were to prideful to apologize. You promise to never do it again? What foundation could you possibly base that promise on when you appear to not believe what you did was wrong and not acknowledge the pain you put the reader through? What can you base the promise on when it appears that you haven’t change? What promise can you base it on after you both kept on bugging by (what I think was) making numerous social media accounts and phones numbers that the reader had to keep blocking to the point where the reader got so fed up they begrudgingly agreed to meet (which shows you don’t care about what they feel and about what you feel)? To be honest, as someone who has abandonment and trust issues, I would have literally no faith or trust in either of these men. If you wanted to be with the reader, Nagi, then you should have done better the first time around.

Sorry for the long ramble, I just had to get the off my chest. If this is long, and OH BOY DO I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT KASIER-

Okay okay, so in the defense of Nagi, the reader has him blocked on everything. Reo is a necessity if Nagi wants the reader back😭

Is that apart of Reo’s evil master plan?… maybe maybe not 🤷🏻

And omg omg about the “retreating figure… never to feel that way again”. The post-break-up haze Nagi felt a bit slumped/ drained from the whole situation. At first, he thought it was because he was tired, or from gaming 💀. But when he awoke from his nap with his arms void of you and instead full of pillows. Accompanied by a cold, empty spot next to him, he realized his reasonings were misplaced.

Of course, he realizes you were probably the cause of this... icky feeling. But it's Nagi, he'd probably brush it off and move on to eventually forget about it💀

I will say, Nagi probably tried contacting you a day or two after- but you knew better and went no contact💅

I mean, Nagi got what he wanted right? He got the peace and quiet he w complained about, he had no one to boss him around or make him do chores. He was free…

Yet why did he and his luxury apartment feel so… empty

And when Reo heard the news, he tried everything in his power to cheer up his best pal. Bringing him to clubs, exclusive premieres where women were just FLINGING themselves at him like they were being shot from a slingshot.

But anytime one of them managed to wiggle their way in, all he’d talk about was you💀

And it was during one of those boring mundane rants where he realized a part of him left when you walked out that door. And it just took him a little while to realize it.

But the damage was done and a few months had already passed.

And as much as I love Nagi, he seems like he keeps to himself about the more depressing stuff. Like yes, he speaks his mind and has no filter, but he knows what’s better kept under the rug.

Nagi seems like he practices stoicism, yet he’s very expressive in his own ways. Nagi is hard to read, because on one hand yes, he will continue that behavior if y’all get back together. But I do think he’ll attempt to sugarcoat things.

Also Nagi was being deadass about providing for the reader 😭

It was his goal to provide for the reader so they could live a comfortable worry free life. But that never required them to break up (Reo just twisted the truth a bit.) Because the truth is that their relationship would’ve been perfectly fine. Nagi is low maintenance and the reader is independent.

Nagi loves you. He really does. And he’s tired of hearing you complain about work, your boss and your co workers. Always huffs in annoyance when you blow off a date night because you dick-wad boss decided to give you over time.

And let’s not forget that one time Nagi almost quit for you because your boss wouldn’t give you your vacation days so you could go to Spain with Nagi for a getaway vacation/ tournament👿

And late one evening after a long, long night- you were sleepily talking about how great it would be to quit work and be a housewife, how easy your life would be of the only thing you had to worry about was if your hair was frizzy or if the ‘ham’ was burnt. and that’s when he had a genius moment where he promised you he would provide for you so you could laze around all day.

So in retrospect, great plan, horrible- and i mean HORRIBLE execution

Anyway

You both did you own thing, and the only thing that mattered was that you both come back to each other at the end of the day

…Yeah Reo is defiantly gaslighting the reader to make Nagi look better 😭 Like I promise he sat Nagi down in the game room after losing a game; why did they lose the game? Glad you asked. It’s because Nagi thought he saw you in the crowd, but when he realized it wasn’t you, he got sad... And fumbled the ball.

Yeah I know, thee Nagi Seshiro, the man who can balance anything with his feet- tripped??? That’s when Reo knew you had him fucked up💀

So after Nagi got his ass beat by his club and his manager, Reo went to work. And the next day Reo dragged Nagi out of his apartment and to the planning room.

“Why can’t we just stay home? This is really inconvenient”

“Because you’ll end up moping around like a slime”

And that’s where Reo revealed his master plan:

Or “Operation Partner Retrieval”. Oh yeah. This bad boy won’t fail. It comes with plan A through Z, and if worst comes to wear… he has plans 1 through 37 for a reason.

Reo was on Nagi’s side.

Until Nagi casually told Reo what happened. And I can tell you Reo AGED that day.

Because Reo had the exact same reaction as you. “Nagi are you stupid!” “Nagi what the fuck were you thinking?” “You broke up with them so you could provide for them” “How to offend a woman with five words or less by: Nagi Seshiro”

Reo knew how you were like, stubborn, prideful, and closed minded. As in, once you thought something- it’s a CHALLENGE to get you to change your mind. That’s why you n Nagi meshed, he just left most the decisions to you (and you were more than happy)

Reo couldn’t help but cringe when he thought about how he acted. Being petty and making things worse by posting about his and Nagi’s exploits. Making Nagi’s new bachelor life seem so much better than it actually was. And maybe that’s why you block them every. single. time. they try contacting you😬

Like Reo thought y’all were DONE. That you broke his poor, innocent best friends heart, that you were some kind of she-devil when in reality his best friends head is full of marbles 😭

Yes I know Nagi is smart… but books smart is different from streets smart my guys🏃🏻🏃🏻
