Just sort of a thought ramble I needed to get out of my head, but I was talking with a friend and she mentioned that I'm really not much of a reader. Which is accurate, but also inaccurate, in a way my brain has a hard time articulating.

She's right in that I haven't properly read a new book in ages. I used to read ravenously as a kid because I had no friends and nothing else to do with my time. I still enjoy reading, but there's other mediums my brain clicks better with nowadays because I'm still awful about not just reading a book in one sitting. That's also probably why I read books less frequently as an adult, honestly: there's no good stopping point in a book for me. If I don't finish a book I get too stuck on "what happens next" to focus on anything else. My impulse control with books is pretty garbage because they are right there, in their entirety, for me to consume. This was less of a problem when I was younger and had fewer responsibilities, but as an adult I can't justify all nighters like that (and also just can't do all nighters anymore, period).

But also I still read a lot, but it's: fanfics, it's visual novels, dialogue heavy video games, it's long tvtropes binges and Wikipedia articles and online short stories and pirated manga I have downloaded. I have 90 tabs open on my phone right now and almost all of them are things I'm planning on reading. Things that just are broken up easily, or short, or have clearly defined stopping points that I don't get hung up on. But those are things I read. Its a large number of things I am reading. Sometimes I'm bouncing between them because I have the focus of a child and I get distracted easily, but they're being read.

I've always been a reader. I haven't really stopped being a reader. I love reading. But do I still count as an "avid reader" if I'm not reading proper books on the regular, like I did when I was younger? What's the criteria? "You're not much of a reader" but is it just that we're reading different things??? How do you define this kind of thing? How are we ranking this?

It's just an odd comment my brain has been stuck on since she said it, I guess. I do have a strong desire to read books again, but it's so much harder than it used to be when I was younger. Maybe it's the brain problems I can define properly now. Maybe it's the association I have with books and crippling friendless middle school lunch table loneliness. It could be a lot of things, tbh.

There's just something disconcerting about hearing someone you trust, who you trust knows you well, say something about you so definitively and confidently and that something feels wrong. It's not incorrect, not entirely, but it's also not right. And if I didn't write it out I was going to be stuck on it for hours and chewing on it until I drove myself into a hole trying to articulate the feeling.

Things in life are improving. I have a busy weekend ahead of me (hubby's work Christmas party tonight, tomorrow we're going out to the lake tomorrow for a holiday event, and then we have a friendsmas party) but I am planning to get back here next week.

My muse is high, my characters are begging me to write, I just need to carve out the time to be here. Which should be doable next week.

Decided to steal my own tags from This Post because I didn't want to detract from the very good points being made about wheelchair accessibility in the art

So I'm disabled. And I often have to use crutches as a mobility aid. Sometimes one, sometimes two. And even with that, I still sometimes can't get around.

There have been numerable occasions in my life where something has been marked as 'accessible' that is not accessible to me, because it was made with ONLY wheelchair users in mind.

And like I said in my tags, it's a genuinely great thing that things are now being made with wheelchair users in mind! I am genuinely heartened and happy that wheelchairs users are being recognised in public spaces and accommodated for!

But they are not the be all and end all of physically disabled people.

I need the extra space of a disabled bathroom. Especially as another physical disability of mine causes me to often require space to change underwear or clothing.

However, if I'm having a bad pain day, I can't wash my hands. Because the only sink is at the height for a wheelchair user. So my options are to eschew hygiene and pray that a cleaner wipes down the door handle regularly so others aren't interacting with a thing that I have touched without washing my hands, OR risk furthering my own pain by bending to reach the sink, which could end in me stuck in the bathroom as my back seizes and I cannot move.

As I'm sure you can imagine from reading that, neither option is a good option, but one is a safer one for me. And I hate it. I'm 'lucky' in that I have to always carry baby wipes with me anyway so I'm somewhat able to mitigate the hygiene issue, but what if I didn't? What if I didn't have the extra disability and just had the back problems that required the extra space of the disabled bathroom for my mobility aids? What then?

I also have a radar key (for those not in the UK: disabled bathrooms are often locked. A radar key is a skeleton key for disabled bathrooms all around the UK) so I can always gain access to the disabled bathrooms. Except... I often have to find staff to help me open them anyway because the door handles are low and I can't bend to press them.

Now this post isn't me saying that the world should be built only to cater to me in particular (tho gods it would be nice!)

This post is talking about competing support needs and how my experience as a disabled person, struggling with how so much 'accessible' stuff is only designed for wheelchair users is just as valid as a wheelchair user celebrating that they can use an ATM and a public bathroom without needing the aid of a stranger or a carer.

I've seen quite a lot of people, in real life and elsewhere on the internet, want to call it Ableist when people ask for there to be a different option that would be inaccessible for a wheelchair user to use within an accessible area like a bathroom. They think it's able bodied people, or parents (since often in the UK, disabled bathrooms also double as baby changing, which is a whole different kettle of fish) demanding we take away the accessibility that the bathrooms are there for. They don't think about people on crutches, or canes, or with mobility that changes by day, or who can walk unaided but cannot bend, or, or, or.

Two sinks in a disabled bathroom would change my life. One wheelchair accessible, one not. I could wash my hands. Other people who needed the bathroom could wash their hands. Everyone could be hygienic in an accessible way!

Two ATMs, side by side. One lower, one higher. I can access my money. Wheelchair users can access their money. Everyone can withdraw their money safely in an accessible way!

Maybe there's no solution for some (like the door handle) but if others were solved, then the remaining ones would bother me a lot less. It's a lot less frustration and humiliation inducing to say "Hey, can you open the bathroom for me?" When you know you'll be able to wash your damn hands once inside, yknow?

Just a massive extremely obese blubber, look at those rolls they got absolutely outta hand literally been using your body just to store mountains of lard and grow it on you faster than it could be possible. I can't even imagine how many mobility issues you got and how embarrassing it is to show up in public. Hungry and always sweaty outta breath pig all you can do is just lay and gorge till u bound to your already broken bed by all this massive heavy growing lard and at this point you going to get even fatter and fatter and more miserable by the day. Good job piggy! hope u like watchu have done, look at yourself in the mirror while u can and oink so bad u cant no longer please yourself its not that you have short arms and thats why u cant reach it u just excusing your absolute repulsiveness, greed and laziness hope u pleased with whatchu have done and since you stuck in your own blubber just keep eating and pushing yourself even more to get absolutely helpless morbidly obese hog, grow that insane lard even fatter, eat double of whatchu having right now and keep shoving more and more fast food so your rolls be in the way of firemans lifting you up outta your broken bed that going to be completely covered by your enormous lard! So atm immobility is right around the corner so keep it up piggy your next goal is outgrow your room. Piggies like you supposed to drown in their own lard and become more and more greedy and heavier. Your double chin has to cover your whole chest and neck so u cant even open your mouth and be able just drink weight gainers with melted ice cream by the gallons and something like margarine garlic butter right after that so u can finally be lost in your own piggy blubberness you wont stop anyway so why try? Those saggy waddling back fat rolls, belly and tits will touch the floor at the end and just gonna keep spreading out like the butter u drink oink oink

cool details i noticed + things i loved in across the spiderverse

spoilers ahead!

i think the stylization of the different spiders was even more distinct in this movie than the last one! i like that when the camera is focused on certain characters, you get their aesthetic “bleed” into the world (e.g. gwen’s painterly strokes in her silhouette bleeding outwards, miles and his family having chromatic aberrations in theirs, manny’s chunkier outline, etc.)

i LOVE that the spot is miles’ nemesis for a couple different reasons. he aesthetically opposes how colorful miles’ world is, he is a “villain of the week” that peter parker originally faces off against rather than miles, the major inversion he gets (becoming black with white spots) kind of feeds into the underlying theme of asking who the good guys are--especially when we learn that miles would have been prowler in earth-42! obviously also the fact that he and miles are both anomalies is great. i also think it’s good meta humor to have made the bagel guy become the spot.

there’s also a bagel billboard above the spot’s apartment. in some ways very fortuitous that everything everywhere all at once related bagels to the multiverse.

the stylization of three side characters really stuck out to me--pavitr, ben reilly, and of course, hobie! i love pavitr and mumbattan, i think it was a good choice for the trailer and stylistically a really strong and complementary style to bridge miles’ transition into this aspect of the spiderverse. ben reilly’s stylization i love because it evokes the mobile spiderverse game that introduced a lot of people to some of the more obscure spiders. and DUH i love hobie’s style, you can really tell that they incorporated tons of actual britpunk influences in there. also let me not forget margo kess! she’s so cute in this i genuinely like that she’s a VR spider. i hope to god they make jokes about her being on the web. please.

on that note i do like that the prop design also retains obvious notes of which things belong to which spiders! hobie’s is obvious, but you also see it with gwen’s items. also i like that each spider has a different way of swinging through the air that’s more obvious in this one! gwen and pavitr both have an dancerlike quality to them, hobie’s is a little more erratic (anarchist), and miles of course is still figuring out how to nail some of those more tight swings, but he’s way cooler with being in freefall than any of the other spiders. also miguel using his claws instead of swinging and jess using her motorcycle were very cool! lots of aerial play in this one that i’m excited to watch again and follow the eyetrace for.

good moments with miles and his family! i almost always hate the moody teenager plot because it’s like. you don’t see why they even Should care about their family or the family is so overbearing you start just siding with the teenager, but this movie struck a really good balance there for me. also i just really really like that there are scenes where miles and his mom just speak spanish with each other :’) the rooftop party was so real to me. i am not Latine or live in ny, but i am Filipino and i have been at one million parties like that with my family. and those pink cake boxes from a small bakery that your parents like is iconic.

i genuinely enjoyed the commentary on faking the struggle to get into school LMFAO i think that’s very real for a subset of poc, but especially more affluent Black and Latine people.

OH YEAH miles cracks a joke about ATM machines and then pavitr (my king) cracks the same kind of joke about chai tea and naan bread. a bit of an old joke but hey the movie has been in production for 2.5 years and i do think it serves to highlight the way that spidermen crack the same joke. especially when after in the spiderverse HQ a ton of other spidermen crack the same kinds of jokes about spotting The Spot. across the spiderverse, spidermen are the same

pointing spiderman meme is terribly funny i will stand by that forever

more funny meta commentary about donald glover being people’s pick for miles’ voice and not becoming spiderman, so he’s the prowler--in the same way that miles, had he not become spiderman, would have been the prowler. more obvious is his appearance in mcu spiderman, but i still think it’s fun foreshadowing!

on foreshadowing, i think this movie does a great job of laying out a lot of those bits of information. starting off with highlighting earth-42 and making sure you know that sticks in your mind (and it’s also impossible to choose the number 42 and not evoke the cultural memory of hitchhiker’s guide lol), having the spot talk about how the spider came from a different earth, getting another glimpse at it, seeing miles’ earth number right in the splash screen, saying that the big spider device sends you back to your universe via DNA analysis + margo seeing the big EARTH-42 instead of earth-1610 on the screen. and then even in earth-42, the color palette is really different from 1610! 1610′s opposing color for miles is like a deep blue color (opposing his red suit accent), so 42 having a primarily green palette opposes the prowler’s purple accent!

not to mention that when miles pulls into his bedroom, you can see that he doesn’t have a drawing desk up (or his sashimi/supreme poster). i think it’s a sad little detail that the movie seems to imply that his mom didn’t notice a major change in his appearance (having a short afro instead of braids) is because she works so much she doesn’t see him that often :(

fun sound design in this movie! in the scene where miles-42 gets revealed as the prowler, you actually hear that growling sound effect first when miles-1610 gets tackled and then again twice: once we see miles-42 in shadow as the prowler, then when he says his name!

in fact there’s actually tons of fun sound design details! miguel gets a futuristic sting, gwen has like a full on leitmotif, miles has a short leitmotif which i believe is part of “what’s up danger” (i would need to go back and watch the movie a second time to really pick up on it), pavitr and hobie have their own musical instruments associated with them... and even the spider from earth-42 has its own sting! i might have misheard, but i actually also think hobie and pavitr’s “thwip” sounds are a little different than the standard ones!

i love when those little notes show up in the lower corner. very comic book! a lot of those details make me smile, i really feel like they cared a lot about evoking some of the writing styles of different spiderverse writers there

aesthetically and tangentially related, i like the sketchiness of some of the characters! it’s most obvious in the spot and the alternate universe vulture, but it’s such a neat visual trick. it also serves to give the spot an almost “unfinished” look while also giving him better volume. very excited to see the behind the scenes from the riggers/animators/3d artists

the idea of canon events is such a good one for spiderverse--i think it’s great! one of them that i’m almost certain they’ll bring up in the next one is that. um. gwen usually dies when spiderman is trying to save her. straight up i actually thought they were going to pull that one instead of officer singh dying after gayatri is falling! after all spider-gwen almost got shot, plus miles straight up almost drops her after he glitches out in mumbattan. sony please don’t break spider-gwen’s neck...

genuinely loved all the calls to different spidermen too! there’s like one really prominent shot of paperbag spiderman that made me and my sibling giggle. here’s how the fantastic four can still win

in that vein, i have at least Some prediction of what the spiderverse resolution will be? i can imagine that because miles is an anomaly, his canon event breaking might actually be permissible to some degree... perhaps only if he returns to his own earth? truly truly i cannot IMAGINE that they would make us watch his dad straight up die onscreen because like MAN we already watched his uncle die. that would be way too devastating... but obviously miles-42 and miles-1610 have a lot to say to each other about watching an older man in your life that you love die. i’m a little back and forth about the idea that miles was “destined” in some way to become the prowler in an alternate universe but i’m gonna put my faith in the team to not make it weird ykwim. seeing as they already slipped in commentary about the fact that like Yeah it’s partially because miles’ family has money in 1610 that he is even able to “stay out of trouble” i think there will be an interesting conversation to be had about class dynamics between miles-42 and miles-1610! i am like wildly excited for the next one, i have a lot of hope that it will be even more gorgeous than this movie was and will have the same depth of writing/foreshadowing!

lastly and i know i’m just saying this because to ME spiderman is a very trans character. but peter parker from spider-gwen’s universe was just taking his testosterone okay. and spider-gwen having that painterly pink blue and white as she was saying essentially “i want to live my life fully in my identity” was so... happy pride!!!

Just saying that I love your work! Unfortunately though, I Can't get the next update due to internet problems on my laptop (using phone data atm). I assume there will never be a mobile version besides the online version, so I'm sort of just stuck. I hope this project stays open for years to come! 1: What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)

had to sit and PONDER this one and I honestly think its 'a matter of the heart' for a few reasons

that fic has all my writing strengths in it- heavy on the hurt/comfort, heart to hearts, character exploration, some romance, and some humour. its also a proper story- it has a beginning, middle, and an end- so it showcases my story-writing ability rather than just my scene-writing ability. its also fairly long, at 16k, so it gives you a lot of space and time to work with and get a feel for my writing style

im currently working on a multichapter Garashir fic! it was gonna be 4 chapters, its now gonna be 5, and im working on chapter 4 atm. the basic premise of this fic is "what if these two were stuck in a The Ascent type situation" and im having the time of my life writing it

id love to share a snippet of it! here ya go, in which being trapped and injured on an inhospitable planet won't stop these two from bitching about each other's literature-

The tailoring skills of Doctor Frankenstein himself.”  That brings Julian up short. “His tailoring skills?” He asks. Garak throws him a look back over his shoulder, “The monster was stitched together, was he not?” He asks in turn, “Fine tailoring indeed, considering he had to hold together and also be entirely mobile. I’d rather like to learn which stitches Doctor Frankenstein used on his creation.
