The Callisto Protocol gets a six-part prequel podcast series starring Gwendoline Christie
Striking Distance Studios has today announced the launch of Helix Station, a brand new six-part podcast series that serves as a prequel to The Callisto Protocol.
The series stars Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie as a "skip tracer" attempting to hunt down an escaped criminal, but of course, she runs into horrible alien creatures.
Gwendoline Christie spoke about how the series is a dark horror series:
"'Helix Station' is a dark, thrilling piece of science fiction horror. It was amazing to work with the team at Striking Distance Studios to bring the character Percy to life and lay the narrative foundation for The Callisto Protocol."
"Helix Station was once the jewel of the Jovian system, but it's been a decaying ghost ship ever since its Carpenter drive went supercritical. When a dangerous escaped criminal seeks refuge there, officers of the Black Iron Prison force a pair of veteran skip tracers to help recover him. But once on Helix, they discover murderous alien life forms, as well as unspeakable horrors from their past.
Starring Gwendoline Christie and Michael Ironside. Presented by Striking Distance Studios, creator of the game The Callisto Protocol."
Two episodes for the podcast series are available as of writing, nearly 30 minutes each. You can listen to them all here or search for the podcast on your favourite service.

If its marketing hadn’t been harping on about how it was made “by the creators of Dead Space,” I’d have thought The Callisto Protocol a shameless ripoff of other artists’ work. Instead, The Callisto Protocol is a shameless ripoff of its own artists’ work, one so incompetently realized that the pedigree of those responsible only serves to damn them. It’s frankly shocking that anybody associated with Dead Space would possess enough nerve to offer a successor quite so pathetic, let alone brag about it.

I think the most disappointing thing to me about The Callisto Protocol being met with such a mixed lukewarm reception is that it feels discouraging for new IPs.
Obviously within the last decade there's been much more "nostalgia" bait than in past decades, especially where films are concerned. Movie franchises that have been cold for 10, sometimes 20-25 years are suddenly given a new sequel.
It's obviously just anecdotal-- I haven't pored through data to determine any trending outcomes, but I feel like the same thing is happening within the games industry.
A lot of what's out there in the AAA market are established franchises. I loved GOW Ragnarok, but it was pretty much guaranteed to succeed just by history alone. I am looking forward to the Dead Space 1 remake and will definitely get it for the fun, but it's an experience I have had before.
Obviously if a game fails to reach a good criteria then it should be fairly criticized. I just worry about the state of new successes, whenever you have one that had so much good faith from the gaming community, and it just falls short once again. It's nowhere near the blunder of Cyberpunk, obviously, since Callisto Protocol is a complete and playable product-- even if frustrating for many. But I can't help but think of them together, in this instance. Both two big games representing new IPs with lots of anticipation... only for it to fall so flat, either by sheer incompetence or just bad design philosophy.
Meanwhile, for people who want "better" versions of both those games, your most comparable experiences to look forward to are... the Dead Space remake, hashing out an old IP, or the next-gen upgrade for the Witcher III, an upgrade for a well established and loved game in an existing franchise.
I guess what I'm saying is, it feels like for a while now, there just hasn't been any new blood to stand out in the gaming world at large. I'd really love to bite into something a little different, ya know?

FINAL TRANSMISSION...
Are you ready for one last disco on Callisto? Of course by disco we mean flashing lights, limbs everywhere and movements resembling zombie-like figures in the dark... However, unlike your prior disco experiences, these things will actually rip your face off.
Deluxe Edition owners/Season Pass holders for The Callisto Protocol will today 27th June have two days exclusive access on PS5 for the game's story DLC, Final Transmission! Xbox and PC gamers, you'll get your shot on 29th June!
Following free updates like Hardcore Mode and Dismemberment, as well as two cosmetic bundles and the wave-defense Contagion Mode, story DLC is majorly welcomed for those that were left hanging at the end of the standard game release!
Feeling a little rusty? Well the good news is that you can expect a new melee weapon that'll help you get back into the swing of things! Say hello to the Kinetic Hammer:
Tumblr media
Of course, a new weapon means you can also expect new monsters too. It's never straight forward is it? Escaping from a Biophage-infested prison on Jupiter's dead moon. If you've gotten this far then you'll know that Jacob Lee's had it rough. In fact, if you're anything like THIS gamer then you've seen him die 564634654 times in cut-scenes that leave nothing to imagination. Messy.
Sending good luck to all of you on your last-ditch attempt to retrieve Mahler’s data, get it off Callisto and redeem yourself.
"Black Iron Prison OUT!" *mic drop*
