Favorite Final Fantasy Music (FFXI - Rise of the Zilart)
Today on the menu is FFXI's first expansion, Rise of the Zilart! The game gets some extra story/worldbuilding starting right off the tail end of the final fight in the base, and it has some of my favorite antagonists in the whole game. The soundtrack here isn't terribly different feeling, which is nice cause you still get a lot of those chill vibes or upbeat battles. Anything further I say is just gonna pad so let's just get into it ;)
5. Tu'Lia This has a similar vibe to 'Neath Dark Waters from FFXIV to me. You get to the final area, an extremely ancient city (or city like area) and... it's calm? It's chill for some reason? I would expect something intense for what might be the end of the world, but no. This feels just like a fun, spacey sky island. The enemies spread around are called Sprinklers and Groundskeepers, showing that this is just... a big garden. And I really find that charming. I love the harp and marimba in this song, in particular, not to mention when the greater melody pops in in the second half of the song.
4. Rabao This is one of the new main settlements in this part of the game, Rabao being an oasis in the desert. I really love the acoustic guitar in this; combine it with the flute and shakers and it really gives you that desert vibe, but with a sense of life. Again, like with the last one, the song really picks up midway through, with a really interesting string pluck/wind instrument combo sound in a super fun melody that I love.
3. Kazham This is another main settlement in RotZ, and the first one you (or at least I) get to first. It's a little fishing village next to a jungle, founded by the Mithra (the cat people). I'm not quite sure what the main instrument is? it's definitely a string instrument, but it's like, metallic in a way. Whatever it is, it's addicting to listen to. When the song picks up and introduces the drum set (which is slight but also makes all the difference!), it almost reminds me of Zelda in a way? Like something I'd hear in Wind Waker, and that gives me nothing but happy vibes and smiles. And as usual, this song at some point hits a very specific combination of notes, right as it peaks, to just tug on my heart a little bit.
2. Tough Battle #2 We've been chill vibes so far, but now it's time for the intense stuff. (I say intense, but XI at its most intense is still a lot chiller than most games which I really appreciate) I hated this song at first, because it felt off rhythm and super weird and terrible. But then I started to listen more, I found the really weird tempo it was going at, and that's when it clicked. For reference, this is the major boss theme in this expansion, where you fight one of the main villains, and also where SMNs get their summons (plus other things but those are the most notable). I love that really deep bassy back track, makes it sound like bubbling lava. You throw in the tambourine to really help you find the strange rhythm, and then finally the horns tell you it's time to fight. Absolutely one of the weirdest but also most fun songs I have heard in really this whole series. Not because of what instruments it uses, but because of how it's composed. Shoutouts to Stranger of Paradise where, in a game full of remixes of songs, they just fucking update this guy 1 to 1 and tell you "Yeah, I made this song originally, you get to have it again but even better."
1. Fighters of the Crystal Ohhhhhh man. I will start by saying: this pick is absolutely influenced by nostalgia. This is the boss theme of the Ark Angels (or Crystal Warriors whatever you wanna call them), and as a kid? I thought these were the coolest motherfuckers I've ever seen. Pale warriors with red eyes wearing all black, the physical manifestations of each race's prime sin?? Dude. I was popping off. They're still super cool to me I do not care what people say. But also, this song is so fun to listen to. Similar to Tough Battle #2, it has a really interesting backing track. The xylophone with the heavy hits (I think they're strings?) gives you this really puzzly alien feel that you get lost in listening to. I don't even really know how specifically to explain why I like the main melody either, other than it's just really fun! Then it goes into this sort of waltz part, where the bassy horns hit you with this sort of offbeat rhythm to give the main strings more bounce. it's such a cool theme by itself, and you add on the fact that the things that it is the theme for are also really cool? Amazing combo. This is probably my favorite FFXI song out of the entire game, and if I had just consolidated this onto one list, this would still be #1.
Honorable mentions go to: Battle Theme #3, Dash de Chocobo, The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah, Hall of the Gods, Eald'narche, and Belief.

Stranger of Paradise: A Bold Departure from Final Fantasy Norms
Final Fantasy holds significant importance for Square Enix. It's apparent to anyone that sometimes Square Enix displays a startling willingness to experiment with this franchise. Final Fantasy VII Remake, in case you need further proof, exemplifies the company's readiness to greenlight daring and almost transgressive projects. Stranger of Paradise, however, stands as even more definitive evidence. Both of these games defy elements deeply entrenched in the core of the Final Fantasy universe.
Tumblr media
Stranger of Paradise's Satirical Take on Final Fantasy
The gameplay itself is exceedingly well-crafted. Although it might appear initially overwhelming with its myriad buttons and mechanics to grasp, one swiftly adapts to the learning curve. If you've experienced any of the titles in the Nioh series, you'll likely find the format employed in this game familiar. The menu design, equipment progression, and playstyle bear striking resemblances. Besides the standard HP and MP, there's a break bar for both you and your adversaries. For you, it primarily serves to employ the Soul Shield, offering protection from attacks while serving as the sole means to replenish MP during combat and unleash special abilities when defending against specific enemy assaults. If your bar depletes and you're stuck, you become stunned and vulnerable for a period. The same applies to enemies, who, when their break bar is shattered, enable the option to execute a soul burst, a strike that crystallizes and swiftly dispatches the opponent. If you like more games like this please go to buy ps5 games.
Tumblr media
Initially, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin presents three difficulty options: Casual, Action, and Hard, with a Chaos mode unlocked upon completing the game. Switching between them is possible via the map menu at any point, but you can only lower the difficulty while on a mission. Personally, the game proved to be less challenging than expected. Having recently played Nioh Remastered, I found the Action mode slightly more demanding compared to the other Team Ninja titles. Meanwhile, Chaos mode can pose a substantial challenge if you lack the appropriate equipment, as things become considerably more aggressive.
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy's Daring Evolution
In Chaos mode, you can further increase mission difficulty multiple times, enhancing replayability for each scenario. One aspect that pleasantly surprised the reviewer regarding the technical aspects of Stranger of Paradise was the game's fluidity. Those who played the initial trial in 2021 may recall sporadic frame drops.
Tumblr media
This issue is now nonexistent, allowing for a consistently smooth performance even when numerous enemies populate the screen, employing various skills simultaneously, all without affecting gameplay. Such performance stability is paramount for this type of game, where rapid responses are essential to avoid taking damage. Frame rate problems at launch have plagued titles from major developers, but in this case, no strange bugs or game crashes were experienced. At most, the reviewer noted a minor discrepancy where Jack's hand didn't align perfectly with the position of his attire during a specific scene. As a Final Fantasy game, composed by none other than Naoshi Mizuta, it should come as no surprise that Stranger of Paradise boasts a foot-tapping and hum-worthy soundtrack brimming with haunting melodies and intense battle themes. The dungeons feature remixed music from past Final Fantasy titles, and while it's challenging to single out a specific track superior to the original, the overall strength of Final Fantasy's musical legacy remains intact, with each piece being impeccable. The inclusion of "My Way" by Frank Sinatra as the theme song adds a delightful finishing touch. Please buy ps5 games for a better experience.

I unironically think the like setting design stuff in stranger of paradise is great like i assume at some point the meta kick ff is on right now is going to get tiresome but at the moment I think the concept of "rebuilding final fantasy 1 out of bits and pieces of other ff games" fucking rules actually

IT’S HIP TO BE SQUARE (AT E3)!
Excuse that Huey Lewis & The News reference to kick things off, but as this is our first blog of the weekend’s shows - we’re a little excitable. Whilst we know this wasn’t the very first presentation of this year’s E3... It feels right to start at square one. Get it? Ha.
Oh by the way, if you’d like to watch the show in full then you can hit up the link right here! But then you’d miss us chatting away with snappy and spirited stories below. Your call.
Now where were we? Ah yes! Highlights. Highlights of which there were plenty! First on the agenda...
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy
youtube
Wheeeeeeew! One of the most popular groups of characters from Marvel’s maestros are coming to consoles on 26th October! Think third-person, single-player adventure with the witty narrative you’d come to expect from this rather unlikely circle of friendship. You are Star Lord. You got this, probably...
As a product of Eidos Montreal you can expect their own take on its story, rather than anything based on Marvel’s content. Should that mean you should be any less excited? Pfft. Behave. With the ability to call upon Groot, Gamora, Rocket, or Drax in combat - We’d say the gameplay has a good chance of matching its no-doubt off the chart level of comedy.
You can pre-order with us right here.
Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther - War For Wakanda
youtube
The Marvel love continues to flow with the confirmation of Black Panther’s entrance in a FREE Avengers expansion! King T’Challa has clawed his way into our hearts many times before, and we don’t see this appearance being any different. There’s no confirmed date to access this content, but we’re hopeful of something to work towards very soon. Take a look at this action-packed trailer that shows Wakanda in-game, and gives a taster of the story we’ll experience. That soundtrack has us PUMPED.
While you wait for more, you can grab Marvel’s Avengers with us and access this expansion when it launches! Right here, guys.
Life Is Strange Remastered / Life Is Strange: True Colors
youtube
Whilst these titles in the multi-award winning series have already been announced, it’s great to get a closer look at the Life is Strange Remastered Collection, which includes both the original game and the Before The Storm spin-off. Both sharpened up beautifully of course, so these clean visuals are a joy to see for any returning fan, or indeed for newcomers to this decision based story series. Backed up smoothly with more on Life Is Strange: True Colors - Take another look at our main character Alex Chen, and her emotion-reading powers that will help us in-game.
We expect to have Remastered online for you soon, but until then you can secure your copy of True Colors right here!
Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin
youtube
Were we going to get through a stream from Square Enix without a mention of anything Final Fantasy? Is that the most rhetorical of questions you’re going to see on this blog? Let’s move on to the part where this is positive.
We’re thrilled to see another exciting FF title making its way to us in 2022. Whilst that seems like a lifetime away, this slash-fest that is the trailer for Stranger Of Paradise should keep us quiet for a while!
We meet a trio of warriors that are wandering into the Shrine of Chaos with only one thing on their minds. To destroy Chaos itself. Little more is known by us but the trailer does hint that a demo will be coming to PS5 soon! Guess we sit tight and await the fight.
More on this one as it trickles through...
What follows to conclude is a discussion on what we’ve been shown. Definitely worth your time if you want more on what’s come before!
We expected presentations to be quieter this year on the back of what was a truly horrific 2020 for most! However, we think Square Enix have done a great job of still providing plenty to play until Covid goes away...
Keep ‘em peeled over the next week or two! We’ll be busy updating and adding listings to our E3 Hub. You can access it and stay on top right here!
Until tomorrow - thanks for reading!

'Stranger of Paradise' devs reveal how one song shaped the entire soundtrack
‘Stranger of Paradise’ devs reveal how one song shaped the entire soundtrack
Jack Garland might be new to the Final Fantasy franchise, but he’s already got an unmistakable sound. Frank Sinatra’s iconic ballad “My Way” is the unlikely theme song to Stranger of Paradise, Square Enix’s metatextual retelling of the story of 1987’s Final Fantasy. But it was an original composition, “Jack’s Theme,” that provided the direction for the game’s full soundtrack. Series visionary —…

Final Fantasy Origin: Why Frank Sinatra’s My Way is a Perfect Final Fantasy Song
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
While there’s so much to say about the latest trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy, it’s hardly a surprise that the part of the preview that’s catching everyone’s attention is its use of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way:” a seemingly strange needle drop that is actually oddly fitting.
If you haven’t seen the new trailer, I highly recommend you set aside about five minutes of your day to give it a look. It’s even crazier than the game’s absolutely wild debut trailer:
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
As noted above, the trailer’s most bizarre moment occurs around the 2:45 mark when the otherwise fairly standard epic fantasy soundtrack suddenly fades away and is replaced by the 1969 Frank Sinatra hit “My Way.” It’s an unexpected needle drop that initially seems to be another strange choice in what has already been a series of strange choices that have defined this project so far.
While you’re excused for believing that Stranger of Paradise developer Team Ninja chose this particular song because they like choosing weird songs (the Stranger of Paradise demo features a Limp Bizkit tune), Final Fantasy Origin producer Jin Fujiwara reveals that “My Way” happens to touch upon core elements of the ARPG’s plot.
“The story is going to be depicting Jack and how he lived and the choices he made throughout his life,” Fujiwara says in an interview with Polygon. “And so the fact that he is sort of living his life and making the choices that he is confident and he is not going to regret we felt really matched with the lyrics of ‘My Way’ so we wanted to incorporate that song [in the trailer].”
That’s a perfectly reasonable (and certainly interesting) explanation for the use of this song, but those who know a little more about this series and this project may also recognize some of the other ways that this inspired song choice fits the Final Fantasy franchise so well.
Stranger of Paradise is essentially a remake/reimagining of the original Final Fantasy game which, as we’ve talked about before, wasn’t just a revolutionary RPG title but a real shot in the dark project that essentially ended up saving the company despite the fact that many doubted the team could pull it off or that it would be a sales success even if they did. For better or worse, the song “My Way” has really become the anthem for bold swings and the people who make them (or at least those who think that is what they’re doing). It’s easy enough to see the use of this song as a simple tribute to the nature of the rebellious nature of the first Final Fantasy and the franchise it spawned.
However, Team Ninja’s use of this song is likely just as much about their history and style as it is the legacy of the Final Fantasy franchise.
To put it mildly, Team Ninja has made a name for themselves over the years through their commitment to doing things differently. They’re not just a studio that often makes fundamentally weird games; they’re a studio that is often quite vocal about their commitment to doing things differently. Their commitment to that concept has also inspired them to come after critics (in various, not always harmful ways) who call out some of their specific decisions.
That being the case, it’s entirely possible that the decidedly mixed reception to Stranger of Paradise‘s debut trailer and demo have once again inspired Team Ninja to loudly declare their commitment to staying the course and continue to do things their way. Like it or not, this is seemingly going to be as much (if not more) of a Team Ninja game as it is a Final Fantasy game.
And yes, as Fujiwara points out, the Final Fantasy franchise is filled with solemn protagonists battling the odds, presenting themselves as loners (though they obviously end up being in the middle of a full party of friends), and generally doing things their way. Honestly, Final Fantasy 8‘s Squall feels like exactly the kind of person who would listen to “My Way” a bit too much.
So, while I’m perfectly willing to believe that Team Ninja’s use of “My Way” can primarily be attributed to the game’s plot and themes, it’s certainly interesting to think of the various ways that the song provides a slick bit of meta-commentary.
