Dazai who changed his life's path because of a dead friend's last words who encouraged him to make his world more beautiful.

Sasaki who was haunted by her lover's, the Azure King, mission, even after he perished by his own hand, continuing to carry it out despite her being exhausted by this ultimately meaningless mission she gave herself.

Mushitarou, who turned himself into a villain so his friend's last wish could become true, and then sacrificed everything he had left to make sure the secret would be kept.

Fukuzawa, whose friend left him with the weight of the world on his shoulders with his last breath, wishing for Fukuzawa to lead a new world order of peace.

Verlaine, who lives half a life after it was granted to him at all by a friend he didn't really consider to be one until it was already too late to say thank you or sorry.

There's also Aya, haunted by the perfect image her father kept of her departed mother and sister; Chuuya, who so often makes decisions to honour those he lost; Atsushi, who was haunted by the ghost of the Headmaster; Akutagawa, who is haunted by Dazai's lack of recognition and absence; Rimbaud, who was permanently cold from the distance he put between himself and Verlaine without realizing...

Just... bsd and grief and the weight of expectations from someone who's not even there to be proud or proven wrong.

i (re)read stormbringer after several months upon receiving my officially translated copy and my god does albatross sounds like real chaos. you can’t tell me he wouldn’t do that tiktok trend to kesha’s “die young” to chuuya in the middle of the night. (for reference)

“day after day, you’ve been goin’ on night-long benders right above me, albatross. that’s what’s going on. how many times do i have to tell you that your floor is my ceiling?”

“aw, c’mon, i haven’t forgotten. i make sure to be extra noisy because i know you’re down there, neighbour.” albatross smiled innocently.

this man sounds like a menace. just consider:

it’s 3am. chuuya, fresh out of a bath and in some nice pjs after a long night of work, is ready to turn into bed. the apartment above him is quiet for once. maybe he can get a nice night of sleep—

suddenly, music in the hallway. the obnoxious sound of the electric guitar playing from someone’s speaker.

and chuuya already knows where this is going.

“i hear your heartbeat to the beat of the drums~”

he opens the door just as albatross is meant to strike the door to the beat of the music.

“come here, you piece of—”

and promptly chases albatross down the hallway, with his slippers in hand to beat his ass.

chuuya gets a noise complaint the next day and he beats up albatross again because he broke his clean streak, damnit.

It’s actually so funny that Dazai showed up out of nowhere to nullify corruption (which no one in the mafia even knew existed until just then??) and drag Chuuya’s unconscious body to where his friends’ mangled corpses were and was like “well, my job here is done” and left immediately

wanna know the most fucked up fact about Corruption?

using it never actually killed the target.

Lovecraft was blasted to pieces but showed up fine a while later.

The Dead Apple dragon was disintegrated but Shibusawa got up a few minutes after to fight Atsushi and the gang.

In the DA prologue, despite using Corruption, Shibusawa was not really killed, since he shows up later, now was he?

Guivre in SB was also vanquished, and Verlaine should have died, but Rimbaud came in last second and saved him anyway.

Even when Rimbaud accidentally released Arahabaki in Fifteen, it wasn't enough to kill him or Verlaine, and it didn't even destroy the lab enough for it to never come up again. And when Verlaine forced its activation in SB, there simply was no enemy to defeat.

Sure it most definitely killed people (grunts, scientists and bystanders for example) and it does get the job done for defeating the enemy, but it never actually kills the threat it was primarily used for. And that's messed up in ways I can't quite put into words.
