Rima Day uses thread, fabric, and paper to create artwork that is inspired by nature and the human body. Day studied fashion design both in her native city of Tokyo, Japan and later in New York City and worked as a freelance custom ballet costumer in New York City and Connecticut. Her skills as a fashion designer are evident in her beautifully hand-stitched artist’s book. This is our third post in honor of National Embroidery Month!

The chaos of hair and my new cheek tattoos. I have always been a fan of wild hair. In 1970- 71ish I loved braiding my very fine white blonde hair all over while it was wet. This was my first step into #stitchedart - I had gone on vacation and I wanted a creative project to work on- this was around the time when there was a bunch of ads for “punch needle embroidery “ online- it looked fun, and transportable so I ordered a kit. Well, it turns out that punch embroidery was NOT for me- but I still had a bunch of floss, canvas, and #embroidery hoops- so I decided to take that kit with me and maybe dabble with some stitching. We were to spend a week at a remote place in lake Bolsena (after spending a few days in #orvietoitaly) while I’m Orvieto we watched a fantastic procession in front of the stunning #cathedral / #duomo - I took some photos, so when we were in the lake house (with nothing much to do) I took out my hoop and started stitching- using a photo as a guide. The stitching process was perfect for me: it slowed me down and kept me focused. I had found a new favorite medium!
