I noticed that your art style is really similar to the character cards (tarot cards) of Dragon Age Inquisition… were you a creative director of those illustrations? Or are you heavily inspired by them?
Lovely Anon, I'm extremely flattered you might think so, but no, I have not worked on any Dragon Age game (but I sure get that a lot haha). I was commissioned by Bioware to do a portrait of Carver Hawke for a community thing they did on the last Dragon Age Day, alongside other fantastic community artists, but that's it. I'm just a fan 😊
My art style has been heavily influenced by the Dragon Age Inquisition cards (like many other artists! I adore them all!), but more than that, my art style has also been heavily influenced by artists that influenced the style of the DA tarot cards - like Alphonse Mucha, and even more so, Gustav Klimt. I also really enjoy the work of other contemporary artists who are influenced by Klimt too, like Thomas Blackshear II and Svetlin Vassilev! My art style is influenced by other things too though.
I think the DA cards helped unlock some possibilities in terms of style and stylization in my mind, which was tremendously helpful and made me grow as an artist, but I haven't tried to mimic their style in years (love looking at the cards still though 😍).
And to be honest, I don't think my art style looks that similar to DA stuff anymore. Maybe some elements, and some more than others, but that's it. DA cards have a much looser style than I do, and they're WAY more expressive! The artists who created them are MILES ahead of me!
tl/dr: man I wish 😂

National Fossil: Canada
Last week I asked what should be the national fossil of the USA and (to the surprise of absolutely no one) Tyrannosaurus won that title by a mile.
I liked the idea, so I thought I‘d do that again, but this time ask you guys what should be the national fossil for Canada. Honestly, I‘d like to do this for a lot of countries and maybe I can make a map for it in the end or something.
Same as last time: it could be a fossil that is just exceptionally well preserved and beautiful, had a huge impact on paleontology and our knowledge of the past, is very common/representive of the area, is beloved and famous in the public eye, is just a very unique and interesting find, or has any other justification.
Here are my suggestions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anomalocaris: Everybody‘s favorite “weird shrimp“, one of the earliest complex life forms and apex predator from the famous Burgess Shale fossil site in British Colombia, one of the best places to find creatures from the Cambrian, more than 500 million years ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tiktaalik: An important step in the transition from fish to land-living tetrapods first found in Nunavut (Art by Zina Deretsky)
Tumblr media
Edmontosaurus: A large duck-billed dinosaur with populations raging across large parts of North America and named after the Canadian city Edmonton
Tumblr media
Albertosaurus: A large carnivorous dinosaur closely related to Tyrannosaurus and named after the Canadian province Alberta, where it was first found
Tumblr media
Borealopelta: Only discovered in 2011, the beautifully preserved ankylosaur included osteoderms (the armor on its body), skin and even stomach contents. It was in such good conditions that even the color could be studied (it was reddish brown)
Tumblr media
Castoroides: Since Canada‘s national animal is the beaver and I wanted to give you a mammal option/something more recent, may I present to you Castoroides, the giant beaver. The pleistocene animal was one of the biggest rodents of all time and common across North America
PS: If someone has suggestions for Mexico or other Central American countries, let me know.

Letters in Your Last Name - Chapter 15
Tumblr media
A/N: I also kinda hate GMBG for what he did to us, Sam. I KNOW okay. I kNOWWWWWW about the cap hell okay. But still. FiFi should have retired a Wild player and I will never forgive Billy for taking that from us.
Word Count: 3.5k
Warnings: Angsty (this is really a theme in these chapters RN), Swearing, lil smidge of smutty themes.
Things are decidedly NOT okay.
I listen intently, standing in my brother’s kitchen 6 weeks later as he describes his conversation earlier this morning with Wild General Manager, Bill Guerin.
“I believe what he’s saying. They thought I would squeak through waivers because I’m still rehabbing. Unfortunately, Edmonton has a lot of goalie uncertainty, so they decided to grab me.” My brother takes off his Wild hat and runs a hand through his hair. Yep, no longer a Minnesota Wild player, my brother will now be an Edmonton Oiler for at least the remainder of this season.
“How… are you even going to get into Canada?” I wonder when I find my voice after the initial shock wears off. “Canada is not letting in international travelers.”
“Well, I’ll be considered a business traveler. The team is working on getting my visa approved. Then I’ll be able to cross the border. What sucks is I still have to quarantine for 14 days. I can’t seem to get around that hurdle.” He mutters in annoyance. Understandably so considering COVID is what created his heart condition in the first place.
“When are you leaving?”
“As soon as I can get packed. I’m going to start driving up as far as I can.”
“You’re driving!?” I gasp. From here to the Canadian border is at least 5 hours in good driving conditions. From there, it’s another 15 hours to Edmonton
“It’s the only way at this point. Air travel is limited between here and Canada and I can’t book a flight until I have my visa.”
“This is such crap.” I snap, pushing away from the island.
“It is what it is, Sam. We can’t change it.” He sighs, coming around to give me a hug. I hug him back tightly and close my eyes, feeling the sadness take over my body. “Felicia is going to need your help while I’m gone. We decided her and the kids are going to stay here for now. The quarantine requirements are tough and we don’t know if the kids can handle a hotel that long.”
“Okay. Of course, I’ll be around for her.”
“Thank you.” He gives me one more tight squeeze before he releases me. “Alright, I have to finish packing and then I’m hitting the road.” I nod in response. “See you when I see you.”
“Bye, Al.” I sigh. We have certainly lived apart for several years previous to Alex joining the Wild, but this goodbye feels harder than any of those did. I swallow the lump in my throat and look down at my phone buzzing on the counter. It’s Kevin. I click ignore because I can’t talk to him right now. I’ll lose it. And I don’t want to do that in my brother’s house when he already has enough stress.
Felicia joins me in the kitchen as Kevin’s text comes through.
I’m home. Where are you?
I type in a quick response. With Alex and Felicia. Go ahead and eat without me. I’m going to be awhile.
“This sucks.” Felicia greets me with a hug. I rub her back comfortingly when we step apart.
“Yeah… I’m here for you though. Just let me know what you need.”
“I will. My mind is so scattered right now that I can’t think of what that is yet. But I’ll let you know. Thank you.” She sighs and grabs her cup of now cold coffee from the island.
“Did you talk to the kids?” I ask her.
“We did. Sawyer is beside himself, but I don’t think Serena really knows what is happening.” We share a sad look and I have to drop my gaze so she doesn’t see the tears forming in my eyes.
It’s going to be a rough day.
A few hours later, I make my way back to mine and Kevin’s apartment in Minneapolis. The whole drive I’m going through the motions until I pull into my spot in our garage next to Kevin’s car. I release a heavy sigh and resist the urge to break down into tears. In the grand scheme of things, this is not the end of the world. But it’s certainly heavy and hard.
“Hey.” Kevin jumps up from the couch when I enter our apartment. “I heard about Al at practice.” He is crossing the room to me and takes note of the scowl on my face. I’m seemingly going through the stages of grief as I take note of the hostility I feel burning in my chest. I want someone to blame and considering Billy Guerin put my brother on waivers, he seems like a great person to start with.
“Fuck Billy.” I scowl at Kevin.
“Okay, get it out now.” He encourages me. “Definitely don’t say that to his face if you see him at the game later.”
“I’ll tell him to his face. I don’t care!” I snap at him, throwing my purse on the counter. “Like what the fuck!? An international team change in the middle of a global pandemic when he has a young family!?”
“Babe, Billy doesn’t have control over who picks him up off waivers… He was trying to move him to Iowa so he could continue to rehab. Al hasn’t even played this year. It probably seemed unrealistic that a team would take a gamble like that.
“Whatever. It’s still his fault.” I cross my arms over my chest, hating that Kevin is being so reasonable about this.
“Are you okay?” Kevin asks after a moment of silence.
“No!” I squawk before bursting into tears.
He comes around the counter and wraps me into his arms. I squeeze myself to him, digging my fingers into his back as I cry. This sucks. There are no other words to describe it. It just does.
“I’m sorry, babe. If you want to stay home tonight, I understand.” He murmurs. The Wild play the Kings at the Xcel at 7:00pm. Going there and knowing my brother has no part in this team anymore will be difficult. But, I’m not just Alex’s sister anymore. I’m Kevin’s girlfriend and he deserves my support.
“No, it’s fine. I’ll go.” I nod, pulling away and wiping my tears off my face.
“Okay… But promise me you’ll avoid Billy.” He looks into my green eyes, his brown orbs serious. He sees the fire in them and his expression turns a little nervous. “I’m serious, Sam.”
“I know, Kevin.” I snip at him. “I’m not a fucking idiot.” I start to walk away from him, heading into our bedroom for some alone, self-wallowing. “And don’t tell me what to do.” I mumble over my shoulder at him.
Kevin’s hand comes to his mouth and I can tell he is trying to stifle a laugh at how childish I’m being. He purses his lips and nods his head at me in understanding.
“Don’t.” I seethe at him, watching his brown eyes dance in amusement. “I’m really upset.”
“I know, but it’s kinda sexy watching you get all mad.” He finally releases the laugh, unable to hold it in any longer. He licks his lip as his eyes dip to my chest, taking in my flushed skin.
“I’m not going to have sex with you! My brother just got moved to a different team. For fuck’s sake, Kevin.”
“Okay. I mean, I’m disappointed, but I understand.”
“You have two hands attached to your body that can help you out.” I narrow my eyes at him.
“Sure.” He nods to me, crossing the room to where I am- his hands still stuffed into his pockets, his shoulders all casually relaxed. He licks his lip as he looks down at me. “But when you want me as a distraction, I’ll be out here… ready for you.” He leans down and places his lips against mine. His tongue is suggestive as it slides against my bottom lip and it takes everything in me to stay rigid. “Five minutes maybe?” He challenges as he pulls a breath away from me to look into my eyes. He sees right through my fake resistance.
“Just for that smart comment, it’ll be 10.”
“I’m a patient guy.” He grins at me, patting my butt lightly before crossing the room to the couch. _ _ _
Walking into the Xcel Energy Center without Felicia this evening was terrible. There is no other way to describe it. I felt the urge to burst into tears when I shuffled inside, but I barely made puck drop, so I was encouraged to press forward and get to the Family Suite. When I entered, the other girls were so sweet, giving hugs and gentle reassurances of the shitty situation to me. I made it through all of those and only cried when Lauren wrapped me in a hug.
“Sometimes, this league sucks.” She assures me as we sit next to each other in the seating area about half way through the first period.
“It’s just been a tough few months with them and now this is kind of the icing on the crap cake.” I mutter, crossing my legs and arms tightly to shield myself from the uncomfortableness of it.
“Absolutely. It’s been tough for you too. I’m here if you need to talk or vent or cry.”
“Thanks, Laur. I know… I think tonight I’d rather just focus on Kevin.” I give her a sad smile and she nods her head in understanding.
We turn our attention to the ice where the Wild are already ahead 1-0. The puck is in the Minnesota end and I cringe as I see Kaapo Kahkonen sprawling on the ice after being crashed into by a few players from both teams. The net is wide open as the puck comes to the blue line. But Kevin is there. He executes a perfect poke check before he is dashing down the ice on a breakaway. Three Kings players rush after him, but Kevin is too fast. He is down the right side boards, creating just the right amount of space, before he cuts into the center of the slot. He pulls the puck to his forehand and a quick shot snaps the twine behind Jonathan Quick.
“YES!” I scream, jumping to my feet and clapping with the rest of the arena. Kevin celebrates and grins as his teammates mob him. I watch his face on the Jumbotron and feel some of the sadness in my heart ease away.
The first period ends with the Wild ahead 3-0. I feel we can all breathe a little easier. The Kings are a pretty lackluster team these days and the confidence of another Wild win is building in the arena. I avoid mingling with the other girls at intermission and instead stay silent in my seat. I send Felicia a quick text to check in and she assures me that all is well in the Stalock household.
The second period begins and the rest of the girls return to their seats. I take the opportunity to grab a snack- a handful of pretzels- along with an alcoholic beverage. Soon, I settle back into my seat with my cider and watch as Kevin returns to the ice for a face-off in the Minnesota zone. The play begins with the puck bouncing back to center ice. Kevin takes off in pursuit quickly, zeroing in on the defenseman as he turns to grab the puck. Kevin lifts his stick as both players turn towards the corner. At the last moment, Kevin pushes to guide the defensemen into the boards, but the King’s player catches an awkward edge and goes flying into the boards face first, crumpling up from the momentum. Kevin falls into the boards too and the resulting image is awkward and concerning.
“Oh my god!” I exclaim, my hands coming to cover my face. I watch as the teams begin to pile up to fight and Kevin becomes consumed by the hockey players on the ice. The King’s player, Matt Roy, has crumpled to the ice, but thankfully he seems to be able to move. I close my eyes and say a quick thanks to the Hockey Gods before turning my attention back to the pile where Kevin is. Eventually, the player that has Kevin in a headlock is taken care of by Jared Spurgeon. Kevin immediately turns from the scrum and goes to Roy who is still down on the ice. The ref is pushing Kevin away insistently to the penalty box. As he skates away, Kevin keeps looking back in obvious concern.
“Ugh Kevin…” Lauren grimaces at me. “Yikes.”
It takes a few minute for the training department for the Kings to get Roy off the ice. Every second feels like minutes as they talk with him, heads down seeing to the extent of how serious this is. Thankfully, within a few more minutes, Roy is up, skating off on his own power. I clap graciously in response and turn my attention to the penalty box where Kevin is waiting. The refs are still discussing on the ice what to do. They break apart and the Wild penalty box opens for Kevin to skate out to the bench. Game misconduct.
I look at the large scoreboard hanging from the ceiling, seeing there is still well over half the second period to go before the game is over. Kevin disappears to the Wild locker room and the game begins again without him.
“That might turn into more than just this game.” I mutter to Lauren. “I hope Roy is okay.” My finger nail comes to my mouth and I chew on it uncertainly. My legs begin to bounce nervously and I just want to see Kevin. He’s never been ejected from a game before, but my understanding is he will stay in the locker room for the remainder of the game. I purposefully do not reach out to him as I want to be respectful of whatever else he may need to do now that he is off. I’m sure there are a few conversations to be had.
The rest of the game is a blur of motion. The Wild end up winning the game 5-3, but it hardly feels like a win to me. I’m too worried about Kevin. I’m not sure what to expect when I do see him.
As we head down to the elevators, Lauren and I chat with Shyla.
“Poor Kev. That was tough to watch.” Shyla says as we enter the elevator.
“Yeah.” I respond, folding my arms across my chest. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he is facing a suspension.”
“Probably.” Lauren agrees with me. “Timing sucks too because he’s been playing lights out.”
“I know.” I sigh, running a frustrating hand through my hair. “We will just have to see.”
When we reach the ground floor, the elevator doors open and I step out, surprised to see Kevin waiting for me in the hall. I slow my pace and stop next to him, waving to Lauren and Shyla.
“Chin up, Kev.” Lauren squeezes Kevin’s arm as she walks by him. He gives her a smile that looks more like pursed lips than anything else.
“Not ideal.” I say when Kevin’s eyes meet mine. He responds by pushing himself off the wall and starting towards the player’s parking lot. At this point, congratulating him on the goal seems like a moot point.
“Nope.” I hear him mutter from in front of me.
“What’s going to happen?” I ask when I catch up to him, lacing my arm through his. He doesn’t pull away but he also doesn’t attempt to get closer to me.
“I’ll probably have a hearing with the league tomorrow. At least that’s what Dean and Billy think. They said they would let me know when they hear.”
“Ugh.” I grunt out, pursing my lips in displeasure. Can this day get any worse? I glance at his face and it’s set in a hard, unforgiving frown. “Don’t beat yourself up.” I say to him, watching as his brown eyes darken. “Hey. It was an accident.” I pull him to a stop and he pulls away sharply before running a frustrated hand through his hair.
“Sam, I just want to get home. Can we not talk about this right now?” He starts to walk again. I follow him silently, knowing it’s best if I back off. The sound of my boots hitting the pavement claps back to us as we walk to where Kevin’s Audi is. We get inside and Kevin begins to drive us home. I slowly pull my seatbelt over me as we exit the parking ramp, heading back towards Minneapolis. We take I-94 for most of the way until we exit to wind our way back to our building.
“I didn’t mean to hit him like that.” Kevin finally whispers to me as we wait for a red light in downtown.
“I know, baby.” The tension inside of me dissipates at his words and I reach out to touch his cheek. My heart hurts for him as I watch the internal struggle rage just below the surface. “Hockey’s an unpredictable game. And sometimes it’s dangerous.”
“I thought he would go into the boards sideways, so I pushed.”
“I know. He lost an edge, Kev. It happens.”
“What if he isn’t okay?” He wonders, turning with fear in his gorgeous eyes.
“Honey, he skated off on his own. That leaves a lot of hope that he will be.” I rub his cheek with my thumb. “You’re a good man. It was an accident.”
He turns away from me and begins to drive when the light flips to green. We are silent the rest of the way to our building. I don’t know what to say to make it better, so I don’t even try. I hold his thigh in comfort so he doesn’t feel alone.
When we arrive at our building, we head directly to the elevators. Once inside, Kevin blows out a heavy sigh, closes his eyes while leaning against the wall. I purse my lips and look at him. It’s going to be a rough night and likely a couple of days as we navigate both this and Alex’s departure.
“I’m here.” I say quietly to him.
“I know.” He responds. The elevator dings and he walks out without me. I pause for a moment and then follow him down the hall. He opens the door and holds it open for me as we step inside. I shrug off my jacket as Kevin walks down the hall to our bedroom, presumably to change.
While he is in there, I take out a wine glass and give myself a healthy pour of Pinot Noir. I savor the first sip as it coats my mouth and slides down my throat. I take another healthy gulp as Kevin returns to the living room. He plops silently down on the couch and flips the TV on. The sounds of ESPN enter our apartment. Slowly, I move towards him, coming around the couch and standing in front of him. I push him back against the cushions gently and straddle him. My hands run to his shoulders then up to his neck to hold his cheeks in my hands. He melts instantly into my touch.
“This sucks.” I affirm to him, watching his face contort briefly into discomfort. “You can’t let it change you though. You know who you are. You know what type of player you are. Don’t listen to what anyone else has to say about what happened. You know your truth.” He nods in response and I pull him into my chest. His arms wrap desperately around my body as he buries his face deeper into my breasts. I hold him to me with one hand on the back of his head and the other across his shoulders. I gently rest my cheek against his head as well, wanting him to feel held and understood. We stay like that for several minutes.
“How do you always know what to say?” He mumbles to me.
“Tonight, it’s the wine.” I respond with a smile. He sighs out a laugh and nuzzles his nose against my breasts. His head rises and I pull back to look at his face. His features look more relaxed but there is still an edge of sadness to him.
“Thank you.” He tells me.
“I could suck your dick if that would help.” I suggest to lighten the mood. He sighs and runs his hands along my thighs.
“I love your mouth.” He pauses and looks at my lips. “But, for now, just come here.” He pats the seat next to him, so I flip to my side, snuggling into him. He slides his hand around me and dips into my jeans, groping my bare butt. I give him a look and he shrugs innocently.
I know exactly where the rest of this night is going.

It serves as an educational hub, showcasing diverse ecosystems and emphasizing the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship. The Kurimoto Japanese Garden, an oasis of tranquility, transports visitors to Japan with its meticulously designed landscapes, serene ponds, and authentic architectural features. This garden not only captivates with its beauty but also serves as a symbol of cultural exchange and appreciation.
Educational Opportunities
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the garden serves as a living classroom. Educational programs and workshops cater to visitors of all ages, offering insights into botany, horticulture, and sustainable gardening practices. Guided tours provide a deeper understanding of the various plant species, their ecological significance, and the conservation efforts undertaken within the garden.
Preserving Natural Heritage
Conservation is a core pillar of the University of Alberta Botanic Garden's mission. The botanical collection boasts a diverse array of plant species, some of which are endangered or rare, highlighting the importance of preserving biodiversity. The garden actively participates in research initiatives, collaborating with experts to study and propagate endangered species, contributing to global efforts in plant conservation.
Conclusion

It’s Native American Heritage Month
Tumblr media
(11/24/2023) In addition to learning and celebrating the history of indigenous peoples, we must support indigenous peoples and communities that are alive today and have been alive for centuries.
I currently live on the lands of the Wyandot, Mississauga, Potawatomi, and Anishinabek people. These people lived here for thousands of years before white settlers colonized the land in the 1800s. I will always support indigenous liberation and sovereignty.
To my non-native US and Canadian followers -- if you’re new to the Land Back Movement, you can start by learning whose land you’re on here. Land acknowledgment is the first step, and from there you can reach out to your neighboring First Nation to start building relationships and learn how you can support them. There are still SO many non-native folks in the U.S. who don’t know the history of American colonialism and acts of state-sanctioned genocide committed against Native Americans -- acts that are still ongoing to this day. I know this is kinda poli sci 101 and this has been said already, but we need to continue educating ourselves and each other. Education is one of our greatest tools in the fight against colonialism and imperialism. Knowing that, I'm sharing some current issues that are threatening indigenous people and communities. These are not exclusively indigenous issues either -- they are issues that concern humanity as a whole.
It is also important we build our communities around things that are positive such as art, literature, and culture. So to bolster these things, I'm also sharing some indigenous content creators, authors, and shops. Thank you to @help-ivebeen-turned-into-aparrot for the recommendations and expanding this list!

A Remarkable Journey: 4 Years of Cross-Country Trek for Rare Skin Disease Wraps up in Thunder Bay
In a heartwarming culmination of dedication, perseverance, and a deep commitment to raising awareness, steve gibbs edmonton from Edmonton, Alberta, completed his awe-inspiring four-year cross-country trek for rare skin diseases in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This monumental journey stands as a testament to human spirit and the power of individuals coming together for a common cause.
Tumblr media
For four years, Steve Gibbs, a determined advocate, traversed the length and breadth of Canada to shed light on rare skin diseases that often remain overlooked in the medical world. His passion was ignited by a personal connection, as he witnessed the struggles of a close friend battling a rare skin condition. Driven by empathy and a desire to make a difference, Gibbs embarked on this extraordinary expedition.
From the serene landscapes of Alberta to the rugged terrains of Ontario, Gibbs covered over thousands of kilometers, enduring the harshest weather conditions and facing numerous challenges along the way. His journey not only raised awareness but also garnered support from individuals, communities, and organizations nationwide. The trek created a ripple effect, fostering conversations about rare skin diseases and emphasizing the need for increased research, funding, and compassion.
Gibbs' arrival in Thunder Bay marked the completion of his incredible odyssey, where he was greeted by supporters, well-wishers, and fellow advocates. The event served as a rallying point for everyone affected by rare skin diseases, providing a platform to share stories, exchange knowledge, and build a network of support.
The significance of Gibbs' cross-country trek extends beyond the miles covered. It embodies the strength of the human spirit and the difference a single person can make. Through his journey, he not only collected donations for research but also provided a beacon of hope for individuals living with rare skin diseases. His dedication reminds us that every step, no matter how challenging, can contribute to a brighter future for those in need.
As the sun sets on this remarkable four-year expedition, Steve Gibbs' legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. His journey reminds us that it only takes one person to spark change and that compassion knows no boundaries. The trek may have wrapped up in Thunder Bay, but its impact will resonate far and wide, propelling us all to strive for a world where rare skin diseases are better understood, and those affected receive the support they truly deserve.

A work permit allows foreign nationals to temporarily work in Canada and can be an invaluable stepping stone for those who are looking to build a better life in this great nation. Here’s what you need to know about maximizing your chances of getting a work permit in Canada.
Do Your Research
Before you apply for your work permit, it’s important that you do your research. Make sure that all the documents required are ready and up-to-date. This includes proof of identity, proof of education, any medical certificates needed, etc. It’s also important that you familiarize yourself with Canadian laws and regulations regarding immigration. Knowing the relevant procedures will help ensure your application is successful.
Be Prepared For An Interview
In some cases, applicants may be asked to attend an interview with an immigration officer as part of their application process for a work permit. Interviews can be intimidating but being prepared and having all relevant paperwork at hand can increase your chances of success significantly. The interviewer will assess your qualifications and decide if you meet the requirements for a work permit based on the assessment.
Check Your Eligibility
It’s important that you check the eligibility requirements before applying for a work permit in order to maximize your chances of success. Most people who want to get a job in Canada must get an employer-specific work permit first which means they must have an offer from an employer in order to apply. However, there are also certain visa programs such as the International Mobility Program which allow employers to hire foreign workers without needing approval from Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It is important that you understand the different types of visas available and which one best suits your needs before submitting an application.

“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Connor Yuzwenko-Martin
Tumblr media
Photo: Connor Yuzwenko-Martin by Alexandra Hickox, Undivided Productions
Imagine if your job included seeking peace and justice wherever it was needed. Connor Yuzwenko-Martin doesn’t have to. In his role as a consultant and educator, his days are full helping organizations and theatre companies identify inclusion gaps and improve their engagement with the Deaf community. As a Deaf creator himself, that makes Yuzwenko-Martin both the advocate he needs and wants to be to others. One of the recent ways he’s doing both? By writing and producing an all-Deaf stage production, performed in ASL—the first, we hope, of many. Actor, producer, playwright, and communications specialist, this week’s “I Am YEG Arts” story belongs to Connor Yuzwenko-Martin.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and why you’ve made it your home.
I was born here in 1991 but flirted with other cities during my twenties when I was out exploring the world. I always thought I might move somewhere else for a year or two, but things have always tended to conspire to keep me here, for good reasons! Whether it’s a sudden new theatre opportunity that calls for my skill set or something more domestic (like now having a big dog to take care of), it seems that Edmonton is my permanent home base. Now that I’ve delved deeper into the theatre community, I find it harder to imagine living anywhere else. The culture is so sincerely welcoming, and I can’t help but get the sense that folks are trying so hard. Art isn’t easy, and keeping a smile on your face after a long day of rehearsal or creative development can be even harder. All that said, I do think there’s value in living and working in another part of the world for a little while just to see how you stretch and grow through that (if curious, Vancouver Island would be my first choice!).
What was it about theatre that initially drew you to it/resonated with you?
It’s that chill you get when you’re witnessing a story being told well on stage. You’re simultaneously immersed in the story, while also becoming aware of the astounding craft and care that’s coming to life in this space. This is also part of my newer interest in producing (rather than acting) on stage. As a Deaf person, I have never been able to access the mainstream theatrical experience the way I would like to, since it’s completely dependent on the theatre company or group’s preparation with ASL inclusion or integration. That’s made me extremely hungry to build more capacity for inclusive and Deaf-centered theatre in Edmonton and Alberta.
Tell us a little about your work as a consultant and educator.
I’ve done everything ranging from presenting on Deaf education at the Alberta Teacher’s Conference to helping launch the annual Coming Out Monologues at University of Alberta Pride. Most recently, I filtered all of my experience through my Diploma in Public Relations at MacEwan University (2021), which helped me decide some of my next career steps.
Currently, I’m softly planning and building my Deaf arts collective, which will be a cross between a public relations agency, a professional advocate, and an independent theatre production company. My priority will be building meaningful partnerships with Deaf artists across Canada to provide services like grant-writing assistance, promotion for their work, and fierce advocacy in situations where it’s needed. Far too often, Deaf folk have to do everything themselves, including educating their employers regarding rights that are already well-explained in legal jurisprudence. I hope to provide a personalized and responsive solution to those everyday frustrations, while coordinating with existing Deaf organizations and associations that often are volunteer-run but hold massive volumes of historical experience that we can leverage. More and more peers are already becoming aware of these inclusion gaps and seeking my advice and guidance, so it makes sense to bring all of this freelance work under one name and brand. Keep an eye out for the big launch!
What does community mean to you, and where do you find it?
I define my community as those who can connect and support each other with the least friction. This doesn’t mean there’s no friction—some is good and even necessary for understanding each other better. For me, this often means fluency in ASL, which brings us back to the perennial communication barrier that keeps the Deaf world pressed up against the fringes of broader society. Deafness has always been central to my lived experience, yet it continues to be so difficult to express it in mutually understood ways that help a less-aware audience navigate toward active allyship and positive collaboration.
I’ve pivoted toward theatre, as it has been the most safe space I’ve found for experimenting with words, signs, images, and motifs to continue the work of developing a bona fide Deaf mythology that future generations can enjoy and treasure. Think “library of beloved Disney movies, but with Deafness centred.” I would be honoured if even one of my works joined that future canon.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d had when starting out?
“Always leave time for something to be done more slowly and deliberately.” I think most of us suffer from a rush-rush in our twenties, where we think the world will literally vanish if we don’t do everything we possibly can, as quickly as possible. I’ve moved at blazing speed for most of my life because I’ve often been the minority in a room filled with hearing people. Whatever a hearing person does well, I usually have to do twice as well in order to get the same recognition or treatment. Trying to keep this up over the years nearly broke me, and I’ve taken massive steps in the other direction to heal and realign my habits. Nowadays, I try to approach everything mindfully, whether it’s grant-writing (asking, “who else deserves to have input on my project?”) or social media content creation (fewer posts but with as much access as the platform allows, like alt text and video descriptions). It’s paying off already because I feel so much more connected to everything and everyone around me. I’ve been forgotten and left out of the room many times—I would hate to become the one forgetting and leaving others out.
Tell us about someone whose support and advice have guided you.
This is actually a difficult question for me to answer. I believe it’s because, for most of my life, my creative work has been done in hearing—and English dominant—contexts, which means that my peers often can only observe my work superficially and offer their best thoughts based on that. Yes, I’ve received so much support, affirmation, opportunity, and recognition from the Edmonton community—but I can’t honestly say that I have received that “pivotal piece of advice” that begins to inform everything I do from that point on. I have recently begun to connect more deeply with Deaf artists across Canada, thanks to better funding for Deaf arts and more centralized events like SOUND OFF: A Deaf Theatre Festival that is hosted in Edmonton every early spring. This gives me hope and direction for my work in building capacity in my local community so that, perhaps, I can be that mentor and advice-giver for others down the road.
Who’s someone inspiring you right now?
This is the perfect time to mention Ebony Gooden as another local (Calgary-based) Deaf professional and creative who has impressed me beyond words with her vision, grace, and power. I have seen her work as a mediator in a few situations to help reconcile complicated situations of layered harm. Her incisiveness and nuance have a transformative effect on people in the room. As someone who seeks peace and justice wherever it is needed, I do my best to remember her techniques and emulate them in my everyday life now.
What’s one thing you’d like to “un-teach” people about the Deaf community (or Deaf culture)?
We are the experts on our individual access needs, but we’re not responsible for paying for those accessibility solutions! Imagine if I had to pay for an interpreter every time I go to a doctor appointment or a meeting with my banker. That means I have to pay a communication premium fee in order to access the exact same service a hearing person can. I wish I wasn’t surprised anymore when a secretary emails me back protesting that they received an invoice from the interpreter, but I tend to be a relentless optimist.
Many businesses and organizations lack a budget line for access spending, which is actually a best practice discussed in the entry-level course I took at MacEwan. It really shows how little widespread understanding and awareness there is in Edmonton (and I can confidently say across Canada) about actual good practices around accessibility. Most folks cheer equality and inclusion but don’t seem to pause and consider their own active role in driving progress or holding it back.
Tell us about the stage production you’re currently writing and producing.
After Faust is a spiritual sequel to the classic Doctor Faustus, which was written in Shakespeare’s time by a lesser-known playwright, Christopher Marlowe. Ever since I read the original story as a fifteen-year-old and then designed a one-act play version for drama class, I’ve been unable to let go of the play’s dark threads. It’s as if those threads had stitched themselves into my recently uncloseted soul, ensuring that I wouldn’t forget it until I had answered all of my own questions about the world of Faustus: What really happened between the arrogant doctor and the demon, Mephistopheles? Was it really just an unholy contract void of any sentiment, or were there perhaps small glances and touches that could only be implied back in the sixteenth century by a historically-almost-verified queer playwright, but in our era can be teased out carefully and lovingly? This queer allegory plays out alongside a deeply personal reflection of my own family’s recent loss. It is absolutely an exercise in slicing out a part of my heart and placing it onstage in the hopes that others will be able to connect to the same slice in their own. The goal is to commiserate in the midst of inexplicable tragedy, which seems very necessary nowadays. In terms of practical production, I’m proudly billing this as the first Deaf-written, Deaf-directed, Deaf-acted, and Deaf-produced stage play in recent Alberta history! It is not my first complete written work, but it is most excitingly the first of my work that will be produced on stage in partnership with Common Ground Arts Society, as part of RISER Edmonton 2023.
When you’re taking a break from a project, what will we likely find you doing?
I’ve been seriously investing in my own health and fitness, so you can find me at the Commonwealth gym a few times a week lifting weights or taking my St. Bernard-mix, Moka, on epically long walks in the river valley! On rest days, I’ll be watching one of the dozen-or-so different shows I usually have on the go or playing the latest Nintendo game. I’m also doing my best to maintain a reading streak of one book a month, which can include graphic novels—anything that’s creative! Right now I’m reading Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada, a collection of four scripts by disabled Canadian playwrights, with commentary by Jessica Watkin.
You visit Edmonton 20 years from now. What do you hope has changed? What do you hope has stayed the same?
We’re seeing the changes and foundation stones of intersectional collaborations and creation being put in place now, but I will always wish it could move a little faster. I believe it is very achievable that in 20 years intersectional arts and theatre—think Deaf, Queer, Black, Indigenous—will not only be an exceptional aspect of programming but also a well-established and critically appreciated component of the wider cultural landscape of Edmonton. A greater number of artists should be living well and happily with funding that allows them to back off the grind and simply live, move, feel, and allow new stories to emerge from our incidental ways of being. As we venture further into the age of climate change mitigation, the public will need these moments of imagination and solace more than before.

The Top 6 Hidden Costs Of Buying A Home
Tumblr media
As the second most affordable city in North America, it’s no wonder that many young Canadians and families are looking to purchase homes in Edmonton. Despite rising interest rates, the Edmonton real estate market is still among the most stable and affordable in Canada.
While it can be daunting to start looking for a new home, it’s very possible in today’s market to find that dream property at a competitive price. It’s all about doing your research and being prepared!
It’s not uncommon for new buyers to get so wrapped up in the excitement of purchasing a new home that they forget all about the hidden expenses of buying a home.
From petty expenses like lunch after a faraway viewing and gas money to big-ticket items like the home inspection fees and property taxes, it’s essential to stay ahead of the buying game by budgeting for these costs.
Now, let’s dive into the granular expenses that homeowners can expect when purchasing a new home:
1. Necessary Repairs
A vital step of the buying experience is conducting a home inspection after negotiating an offer. Inspections help identify critical issues like roof repairs, electrical problems, inefficient HVAC systems, and more.
Usually, you negotiate the price upfront for things you can see, and the home inspection is there to look for things you cannot (eg- moisture behind a wall). While the discovery of some repairs may help to lower the asking price, a buyer may need to get these issues fixed before moving in.
Aside from these larger issues, buyers may need renovations to bring the home up to a liveable standard. They also may want to have certain things updated before they move in…no one wants to live in a construction zone!
2. Property Registration Fees
In Canada, municipal or provincial governments will typically dictate any property taxes.
Anyone who purchases property will have to pay to transfer ownership of the property to their name.
Luckily for those interested in Edmonton real estate, Alberta does not charge a land transfer tax – which slashes a hefty expense.
Instead, Alberta charges a property registration fee, which consists of the property value and the mortgage itself. To calculate your estimated property value, factor in a base of $50 plus an additional $2 for every $5,000 of the purchase price. The mortgage is another $50 base amount plus an additional $1.50 for every $5,000 of the purchase price.
3. Property Taxes
Buyers may need to pay a portion of the annual property taxes on top of the home cost.
Known as a property tax adjustment, this ensures that you pay taxes only for the allotted time you own the home. A buyer must pay the property taxes from the closing date to the end of the tax year. This could also mean reimbursing the seller if they have already paid these taxes.
Buyers who purchase their homes later in the year will have less time to save up for the following year’s property tax. While not an immediate expense for new homeowners, it’s not uncommon to be unprepared to prepare to pay a property tax bill after just moving in and paying for all these hidden costs of buying a home!
4. Legal Fees
Another expense often forgotten during the whirlwind process of purchasing a home is that of lawyer fees.
The amount of the fees will depend on the home’s purchase price and the lawyer or notary. The legal expenses also include ordering a title search and registering the title.
Be sure to consult with your REALTOR® about their recommendations for legal
5. GST/HST
Once again, those interested in Edmonton real estate have it a little easier, as Alberta doesn’t charge a provincial sales tax.
Only buyers purchasing a new build or condo will need to pay GST. Even so, many rebates and exemptions are in place to help with this cost.
6. Homeowners Insurance
In most cases, mortgage lenders will require that you show proof of homeowners insurance before you take possession of a home. Proof of this insurance is required three business days before the closing date.
Buyers may need a full year of homeowners insurance up front for those who are paying home insurance through the mortgage lender. On average, annual policy fees for homeowners insurance ranges from $1,500-$3,000.
Every policy has different payment structures, and each mortgage lender has different requirements. When getting pre-approved for a mortgage, be sure to ask about these requirements.
Besides the typical homeowner’s insurance, buyers may also want to consider title, mortgage, or term life insurance, which can further increase those hidden costs of buying a home.
Although not as significant as a sales tax, it’s still worth noting that buyers will also have to pay GST on transactions like legal fees.
