Stenocactus crispatus

Stenocactus is not a large genus, but it is well known by the common name of "brain cactus" on account of the wavy ribs that extend down the sides of the plant, reminiscent of the folds of a brain. On species with fewer spines, the folds are very evident, but on spinier plants a close look is needed to see them. This is an early-flowering group, with most of the species blooming in late winter to early spring. Stenocactus crispatus occurs northeast, east and southeast of Mexico City. Another name for the genus is Echinofossulocactus.

I’m always a little concerned when i check up on my cacti because are they thirsty? Is it corking? Rot? And when i’m really paranoid i check the roots and see everything is absolutely fine 😌

Stenocactus is a relatively small genus from Mexico, notable for the many wavy ribs running down the plant bodies, a trait which has earned them the nickname of “brain cactus”. In some plants the spines are so dense that the ribs are not even visible, but in the photo above one can make them out between the spines. Stenocactus crispatus occurs in several states in east-central Mexico.
