1. Heart in a woodchipper

A quick word about Toby (before getting into his journey):

Toby is a fighter. He lived for 14 years, of which 1 year and 5 months was a battle with canine lymphoma. He went through various types of chemotherapy, a very strict diet with various boosters and supplements, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and countless visits to the vet which he hates. Before lymphoma, Toby was the perfect picture of health. Everyone who met him thought he was at most 7 yrs old, when he was in fact 12. We had so many good laughs when children would call out to their mom or dad saying “Look at that puppy!” or “So cute… i want a puppy too”

He brought out the best in us through the 14 wonderful years he gave us. We love him so much and hope we’ll see him again someday in heaven.

Christmas 2017 – Toby is 12.5 yrs old and weighed ~8kg here and had the appetite and energy of a champion beardog!

Nov 2017: Took Toby to the vet close by our place at Barkway Medical, due to eye discharge. The vet gave some eyedrops but noticed that Toby’s lymph nodes were swollen in both the submandibular (below the jaw, neck region) and popliteal (hind legs, behind the knees). Antibiotics prescribed. perhaps it was an infection. After a week, Toby’s lymph nodes continued to swell. Took him back for a blood test where lympocytes and neutrophils were off the charts. Doctor suggested that we check for canine lymphoma either by biopsy which means extracting an entire lymph node, or fine needle aspirate which is less invasive. We opted for FNA and hoped for the best. The test results confirmed that Toby was dealing with canine lymphoma.

At this point, it hit us really hard. Like our hearts were thrown into a woodchipper, shredded and spat out unceremoniously. Toby is a huge cornerstone of the life Junie and I built together and we love him like our own child. We reeled from the news and started googling the shit out of canine lymphoma. The prognosis for multicentric lymphoma (B-cell or T-cell) is very poor: 1~2 months if left untreated, ~6 months on average if prednisone (a type of inexpensive steroid with little side effects) is used, and on average 1 year ~14 months (for B-cell) using chemotherapy e.g. CHOP protocol (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone). We were instantly thrown into a world of anguish, but wanted to believe that Toby, with help from his family, could fight this.

The doctor at Barkway tried to refer us elsewhere as they were not equipped to deal with dogs with cancer. He also mentioned that one of his staff was pregnant and for her safety would prefer if they did not have to handle cancer medication as some of it can be highly toxic. We started looking around for a vet who can help us. Natalie Prakash was mentioned by Barkway as the only certified canine oncologist in Singapore (Mt Pleasant) but the notoriety of that animal hospital made us look elsewhere. And so we began with Gentle Oak @Ghim Moh. Our friend had a good experience there for some other issue. We read the reviews and liked what we saw: holistic treatment of chemotherapy and alternative medicine. Dr.Lee in particular was more conservative on chemo dosage and advocated using other remedies. Having seen how cancer’s side effects had ravaged close friends and family and robbed them of quality of life, we decided to start with Dr. Lee.

Gentle Oak is extremely popular. Our first appointment there She started Toby on prednisone right away and scheduled Toby to come back a week later for his first dose of vincristine. We decided not to pursue finding out whether Toby’s lymphoma was B-cell or T-cell, and treated it as if it was B-cell. The reasoning behind this is, according to Dr.Lee, was that it wouldn’t make much difference in terms of the treatment. T-cell is the worst: the treatment barely works, and it’s very difficult to push it into remission; so just pray and hope that it’s B-cell which responds better to treatment and has longer remissions periods.

I will pause here .. this is the end of Chapter 1: how it first happened and how we reacted / steps we took. But… i’ve had a lot of time to reflect, and if i could turn back time I would do things differently. So, here goes.

WHAT WOULD WE HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY?

Do not start with prednisone BEFORE Chemotherapy. Listen to this: http://www.radiopetlady.com/shows/podcast-pcv/lymphoma-importance-delaying-prednisone-chemo/ Basically the efficacy of the chemo in killing cancer cells is lowered due to prednisone. Prednisone (or prednisolone) should be given after chemotherapy begins.

Realize that for fast spreading cancers like lymphoma it’s best that chemo is started rightaway alongside a change in diet. Dogs tolerate chemotherapy much better than human beings so fret not. Especially if your doggo is already in good shape to start off. I felt that we ought to have been aggressive with it instead of relying on alternative / holistic / natural remedies. This is not a drill. Get your act quickly and do not fear chemotherapy. In fact it’s the only thing that really beat cancer back. You will see in later chapters that we threw everything at it.

Go see Dr. Tham at Jireh Vet, Balestier. He has heaps of experience treating cancer patients, and has a much wider repertoire of treatment and a much more dynamic approach. You see, the thing about cancer is that it is constantly evolving and your dog’s immunity can be compromised in many ways that typical studies do not cover off, while undergoing chemotherapy. This causes lots of complications. Dr. Tham’s approach works because he spends a lot more time understanding each case – as opposed to super popular vets like Gentle Oak where your pet is one of the 50 patients they see therefore the likelihood of the vet fine-tuning the treatment to factor in what worked better and what didn’t for your doggo, is a lot lower. Dr. Tham isn’t running his vet to maximize profit. He’s truly interested in the better outcome.

Put your dog on a 24 hour fast with water from time to time. There’s excellent research and data around how fasting helps improve cell health and promote autophagy. it basically helps to starve off cancer cells (sensitizing cancer cells to death). The re-feeding after fasting helps activate stem cells and the regrowth of healthy cells.

Upon squeezing out the face wash, it had fragrant soap scent mixed with a hint of powder. It’s a thick and velvety cream that spreads easily. You can use it with and without a foaming net. When used with a foaming net, the face wash turns into a soft and bubbly pillow that makes me feel like I’m in a cloud. When used without the foaming cleanser, the face wash feels silky when mixed with water. It glides on the skin without any resistance.

After usage, my face felt cleaner and it even looked fairer. The Owlberg extract did a good job in calming my slightly sensitive cheeks down. It is no longer as inflamed as before. I was still able to see my pores but they are insanely clean. It felt like I scrubbed these tiny holes individually. Since my blackheads have been in its original position is the dawn of time, there’s no way to remove them aside from extremely painful extraction. On the other hand, the face wash did help with the removal of artificial dirt and whiteheads on my nose.

All in all, the Guna x Hitoyurai Moisture Face Wash surprised me when it transformed my red-sensitive cheeks back to my skin’s original colour. Additionally, it does a great job in cleansing my large open pores thoroughly.

It spreads across the skin easily and cools your skin at the same time. The moisture milk has a scentless cream scent to it. During absorption, it was a little sticky. After it was fully absorbed, my face not only felt back to normal but it still had the cooling sensation as well.

I did another test where I applied the Guna x Hitoyurai Moisture Milk alone to another part of my face for the whole day and I have to say, I was surprised at how moisturized I still felt at the end of the day. I was surprised that the moisture milk alone can keep my face protected from Singapore’s humidity. On top of that, despite the blend of oils in its formula, the moisture milk does not feel oily at all, perfect for those with combination skin like me.

I like how you only pump out the amount you need although sometimes you accidentally press out more than expected - this happens more with the eye cream. In those cases, I take what I need for my skin and leave the rest there, gently covering the pump with the cover. If not, I would use it for the other areas of my face eg. using eye cream for smile lines.

I find that 1 full pump from the moisture cream is enough for my face and neck. If that is too little for you, you can add half a pump more. I find the design fascinating for it reminds me of jack in the box when you first use it. Like the kid that love pressing buttons, it makes me want to pump more when I see the cream come out but I have to control the child in me to prevent wastage of product.

Guna x Hitoyurai Moisture Cream Review

I love the design of the moisture cream for it has an interactive component of pushing the pump. It was very satisfying to be able to press the pump down fully. Since the moisture cream was suitable for both day and night usage, the cream was not as thick as other anti-ageing creams that have ceramide in it, making it suitable for oily skin victims as well. However, it was thicker than normal day cream thus suitable for dry skin sufferers. Looking at the ingredients list, it contains humectants, occlusives and emollients. That meant it was suitable for all skin types.

Like the moisture milk, the moisture cream smell like a scentless cream. It spreads smoothly on the skin and it absorbs into the epidermis easily. The moisture cream also makes a good night massage cream for it is silky and glides on your face like an ice skater on ice. This is a great quality to have since we are to massage our face daily to promote blood circulation and look younger.

Ever since I found out about the miraculous skincare ingredient called ceramide, I have been actively searching for skincare products with ceramides in it. If you do not know, ceramides replace skin lipids by filling in the gaps between the skin cells. That means, it helps you renew your face and maintain your youth. It is especially important to find skincare with ceramides when you’re older for your skin loses ceramides when you age thus, such products are there to help replenish your lost ceramides and can even make your skin less sensitive than before. Guna x Hitoyurai Eye Cream Review

For me, 1/3 to 1/2 a pump is enough for my small eye area. When I over pump, I’ll tend to cover the excess with the cover so that next time I can use the cream without having to press the top.

Guna x Hitoyurai eye cream had a very thick consistency to it, almost resembling a balm-like texture. This made it felt like a literal protective layer for my eye area. It does not have any distinctive smell to it. My eyes felt very refreshed after application. Due to its thickness, it may take longer than the other products to absorb into the skin. Additionally, it may feel a little greasy if you apply it too generously.

Before my usage, my skin felt tight and it looked dull and dirty. The constant staying up late have taken a toll on my skin over a short period.

2 Weeks Later

Trying out the Guna x Hitoyurai Skincare for 2 weeks has transformed my previously dull skin to a dewy porcelain skin texture. My skin looked and felt super moisturized after my skincare routine. That made me feel like I’m taking care of myself properly - you know how there seemed to be an emphasize of loving yourself correctly these days? I feel like by doing my skincare routine daily and watching my face turn bright and hydrated, makes me feel like I’m giving myself enough self-love among the hustle and bustle of one’s everyday life.

Even with the slight lightning difference, my skin did look a lot more dewier than before. So much so that it looks like its reflecting light off it. Additionally, I do look fairer than before, something I would never thought I would experience since I thought I've peaked in my skin’s paleness.

I am very relieved that the most sensitive area of my face - around my eye - did not get irritated by the eye cream for I previously had a bad allergic with another eye cream that I have now banned from my life.

Blood transfusions are normally used to treat severe forms of beta thalassaemia and sickle cell disease. However, three people with these inherited diseases no longer require transfusions. Their bone marrow stem cells were gene-edited with CRISPR, New Scientist reports.

A recent trial was the first to use CRISPR to treat inherited genetic disorders. And results were announced at a virtual meeting of the European Hematology Association.

“I am encouraged by the preliminary results, which demonstrate, in essence, a functional cure for patients with beta thalassemia and sickle cell disease,” said senior researcher Haydar Frangoul. The statement was in a press release issued by CRISPR Therapeutics and Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated.

Artificial Eyes May Provide Superhuman Vision

Scientists led by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have developed the world's first 3D artificial eye. It has capabilities better than existing bionic eyes. And, in some cases, it even exceeds those of natural human eyes. This brings vision to humanoid robots and new hope to patients with visual impairment.

The Electrochemical Eye (EC-Eye) is described in a research paper published in Nature. It replicates the structure of a natural eye. And it could offer sharper vision than a human eye in the future, with extra functions such as the ability to detect infrared radiation in darkness.

Chemists at Rice University have turned fluorescent tags into cancer killers. Switching one atom in the tag does the trick.

A research paper published in Chemical Science reports that replacing a single oxygen atom with a sulfur atom in a common fluorophore turns it into a photosensitizing molecule. When exposed to light, the molecule generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) that destroyed breast cancer cells in the lab.

Cheaper Compounds with Anti-Cancer Effects

Researchers at Tokyo University of Science have developed a method through which a fungal compound, capable of activating the self-destruct gene in certain cancer cells, can be artificially produced in marketable quantities. This provides a potential cancer therapeutic strategy.

In a paper published in European Journal of Organic Chemistry, the researchers describe a method to produce a compound with known anti-cancer properties. It is called "FE399." And it is naturally found in Ascochyta, a species of filamentous fungus.

According to the researchers, the newly produced compound could provide an unprecedented treatment option for patients with colorectal cancer.

Vitamin D Can Protect Against Certain Cancers

Scientists at University of Eastern Finland and Autonomous University of Madrid have found that vitamin D is beneficial both in cancer prevention and in the prognosis of several cancers.

A research paper published in Seminars in Cancer Biology indicates that the anti-cancer effects of vitamin D are especially pronounced in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer and blood cancers.

In addition, high vitamin D responsiveness can be linked to a smaller cancer risk. Vitamin D responsiveness varies between individuals, affecting their need for vitamin D supplementation.

Rice University neuroengineers have created a tiny surgical implant that can electrically stimulate the brain and nervous system without using a battery or wired power supply.

The new neural stimulator is described in a study published in Neuron. It is based on a thin film of "magnetoelectric" material that converts magnetic energy directly into an electrical voltage.

The device worked in laboratory mice that were fully awake and free to roam. It could be used to treat epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, chronic pain, and other conditions.

And being one of the first MLMs to tackle stem cells for health and skin care products, there may be some truth to their claim.

PhytoScience is a nutritional supplements network marketing company from Malaysia that offers products based on plant stem cell technology.

They launched in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2012, and since then they’ve actually done pretty well expanding globally.

Overview

PhytoScience sells plant stem cell products that fight aging, although their particular products are not backed by scientific studies. Their website still has goals listed from 2015 as their vision statement. [1]

Did they ever hit those goals? No one knows, because apparently, they haven’t updated their website in over a year.

However, we do know that by 2015 their monthly sales had already hit RM40 million, or little over $9 million in USD. Pretty big numbers for a company that just opened shop a few years ago. [2]

You’d think a multi-million dollar company could afford a better website. If you go to the PhytoScience website, it’s littered with all kinds of cheesy catchphrases and buzzwords.

For example, they call themselves the “TrendMaker,” claim “We’re in the business of life transformation!” and their website welcomes you with all kinds of annoying pop-ups and unwarranted music.

They even use 4 words that all start with the same letter to explain their mission. Of course they do. Their “4 Ps” are…

Produces, Plan, Platform, and People.

Not exactly revolutionary.

They were founded by a husband and wife team, Puan Sri Datin Sri Ela Tan and Tan Sri Dato Sri Lai Teck Peng. Dato Sri Lai, the company’s founder and President, has over 26 years of experience in network marketing, mostly in leadership and operational management positions.

Dude has even been bestowed an honorary title by his Royal Highness, the Sultan of Pahang. Bucket list – check. [3]

The couple recently just founded another company called Trendmaker in Singapore to take PhytoScience international. Trendmaker owns a 100% share in PhytoScience. [4]

Trendmaker was already named a prestige winner of the SME100 Awards, which is an annual award program held be Entrepreneur Magazine that identifies the fastest growing small and medium enterprises in Asia. [5]

The awards look at things like growth, turnover, profit, and market share, as well as “resilience”, which is measured by sustainability, best practices, and a company’s vision. Altogether, winning the award is a good indicator of how well your company is doing.

Products

PhytoScience sells health and wellness products reverse aging using stem cells extracted from a rare apple tree by Swiss scientists. [6]

Weird science? Check.

Rare plant or fruit? Check.

The inclusion of a European country for added legitimacy? Check.

A pill that makes you look and feel hotter? Check.

Sounds like a wellness MLM if I’ve ever seen one.

Their products come in two forms: nutrition and skincare.

Double Stemcell is their signature product, a 100% natural nutritional supplement made from the apple plant extract. They also throw in some stem cells from grapes (not just any grapes, grapes from Burgundy), acai berries, and blueberries.

Aside from nutritional products, they also sell stemcell-based skincare products called Triple Stem Cells Age Defying Solutions. These use the apple stem cells and grape stem cells, along with stem cells from the argan tree, chrysanthus flowers, and sunflowers.

They do have some credentials to back their products, at least.

Studies done by Credence Research show that plant-based stem cells can help with skin rejuvenation, weight loss, wrinkles, and skin hydration. Other than lilac and Edelweiss, the studies show that the “magic apple” (presumably the one used by PhytoScience) is one of the most popular and effective plants for stem cell nutritional products. The report also shows that sales in the plant stem cell market are expected to quadruple by 2022, so the demand is definitely there.

However, the “Swiss scientists” researching and developing PhytoScience products aren’t exactly unbiased researchers. Mibelle BioChemistry, the company that locates and extracts the stem cells for PhytoScience products, is actually a cosmetics ingredients company, so they stand to profit from selling these plant stem cells whether or not they’re scientifically proven. Compensation Plan

The opportunity and compensation as explained on their website are vague, to say the least, but that’s to be expected.

However, with no description of what commission might be or how exactly these bonuses are structured, this basically means nothing. [9]

They also state that you don’t need anything to start – no membership or expensive investment. But you do need to select your preferred starter package, which implies a cost. No more details are given.

Recap

The compensation plan is virtually non-existent on the internet, which usually means it’s not great. The products aren’t bad though.

Even though the science behind their products is questionable, there is some evidence backing stem cells from this “magical” apple tree.

More importantly, for you money chasers, there’s evidence that the market for these products is going to skyrocket in the next few years regardless of the scientific claims.

That being said, who’s going to be profiting off this growing market when it comes to MLM?

You know the answer, and it’s likely not you. It’s the CEOs and the top .001% of distributors.

Look, as I’ve shown throughout this review I’m far from a PhytoScience hater. But they’re still an MLM and those have a nasty history of dropping off just a few years after being the next hottest thing.

I’m not saying it would be impossible to make money, but statistics would indicate the odds aren’t in your favor.

I’ve been involved with network marketing for over ten years so I know what to look for when you consider a new opportunity.
