Disneytoon: 1930 Mickey Mouse —Aesthetic
Tumblr media
Michael Theodore Mouse's Character & Personality
Mickey is cheerful in spirit, yet roughish in complexion. Mentality, he's a rebellious child. Though impishly self-serving, Mickey is empathetic and expresses chivalry to aid Minnie in her time of need. With an air of valiance in spite of his diminutive stature and put-upon background, he's an underdog with a heart of gold.

Travis Lampe’s “All Signs Point to No.”
Opening on August 6th, 2022 at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, California is artist Travis Lampe’s solo exhibition, “All Signs Point to No.”
The topsy turvy world portrayed in Lampe's paintings is a trip out of pandemia. Inspired by an old-timey aesthetic, from Steamboat Willie to Bette Boop and Dr. Seuss, Lampe describes his work as "a mish-mosh of those old-timey influences with some Duccio-inspired mountains and the inevitable light-switch nose.”

References in Penacony 2.1's Chapter Titles
I recognised a few of them as I was playing (I don't usually notice or pay attention to chapter titles, but it was hard to miss them this time around because of the character switching mechanic) and decided to compile the meanings of all the chapter titles in 2.1 and which events they specifically directly or probably reference.
This is not spoiler free.
I've probably missed something - I haven't experienced everything referenced in this patch firsthand, but a lot of the references did slide directly into my wheelhouse for once.
I'll do a separate post for Aventurine's allusions specifically; there's a lot going on with him and this post was getting long enough.
Trailblaze Mission: Cat Among Pigeons
'Cat Amongst the Pigeons' is a murder mystery written by Agatha Christie featuring famous fictional detective Hercule Poirot. The story heavily concerns the stolen gemstones at the root of the murders, which have been smuggled overseas.
The obvious connection is Aventurine's gambit with the Cornerstones and the steps he took to smuggle his own into the Dreamscape.
In the original novel, the gems were hidden in plain sight in a tennis racquet - Aventurine hid one of the Cornerstones in his care in a bag full of money to try and pull a similar trick.
Chapter 1: The Devil in Velvet
Time travel romance and murder mystery written by John Dickson Carr featuring, as expected, a deal with the devil. The protagonist later becomes known as 'The Devil in Velvet'.
Aventurine makes a deal with the devil (the IPC), becomes known by a different name and becomes a 'devil' himself - this is the chapter where the Trailblazer agrees to work with him to solve the murders on Penacony.
Chapter 2: Lost Generation
A term used to describe Americans that reached adulthood in the 1900-10s. Americans in this era lived through the end of the Industrial Revolution, WW1, the Great Depression and WW2 - allusions to this can be seen in the lore of Penacony and its founding. This generation also lived through the Roaring 20s (the Jazz Age), which contributes greatly to aspects of Penacony's aesthetic.
Also, the meteoric rise of Disney. Mickey Mouse was born in 1928 in the cartoon Steamboat Willie. Which you probably know thanks to the Public Domain Mickey Saga. Mikhail, the Father of Penacony, is... probably... a reference to Walt Disney, and Dreamville/Penacony itself is probably Space Disneyland (a world where your dreams come true!)* Also, like. Clockie and Mickey, right?
*I have not been to Disneyland, world or any Disney-associated theme park. But I'm... pretty sure that's. it.
Chapter 3: Double Indemnity
Classic film noir featuring a manipulative femme fatale and her lover, who conspire to kill her husband and collect insurance money. The plan falls apart and the two eventually turn on each other. In the novel the two die together, but in the movie adaptation the femme fatale only realises her feelings for her lover when she finds herself unable to shoot him - he kills her, instead.
This is the chapter where Aventurine and Ratio conspire to trick Sunday re; Aventurine's Cornerstone gambit. Though the two pretend to turn on each other, unlike in the movie Aventurine's scheme works out as planned.
Despite Aventurine being unsure of it earlier in the patch, Ratio confirms he does care about Aventurine's wellbeing via the note in the 'prescription' given to Aventurine later down the line.
Aventurine's personal questline, Danse Macabre, appears. There's enough going on with Aventurine's symbolism that I'll put it in a separate post.
Chapter 4: When The Sacred Ginmill Closes
Murder mystery written by Lawrence Block featuring an alcoholic detective (Matt Scudder) trying to connect the dots between a series of murders. This one seems to be a bit looser.
The Express Crew reunite with bartender and head of the Bloodhound Family, Gallagher, who will take them to a bar the next time we see them.
Welt and Acheron discuss life in Penacony, as well as Welt lore.
Black Swan talks to Mysterious Voice On the Phone and learns that Acheron 'wasn't meant to exist.'
Chapter 5: Heaven is a Place On Earth
The only connection that immediately comes to mind is the song 'Heaven is a Place on Earth' by Belinda Carlisle. I am actually unable to think of the phrase 'Heaven is a Place on Earth' without mentally putting an 'ooh' in front of it. Catchy song.
This may be a reference to Penacony seeming to be a miraculous wonderland where everything is great and everyone has a wonderful time - contrary to Acheron's accounts of what she witnessed in her travels through the Dreamscape.
Aventurine runs around throwing money at NPCs and meets up with Sparkle. A reference is made to The Statue of the Happy Prince that I will explain in another post.
Chapter 6: Why Do The Heathen Rage?
One translation of Psalm 2.1, from the Book of Psalms. Broad interpretation; 'it is impossible to undermine or escape the will of God and all attempts to do so will fail'.
E.g. the biblical Ten Plagues of Egypt (water turns to blood, plague of frogs, locusts, pestilence etc.) were a both a show of force and the ongoing consequences of the then-Pharaoh refusing to obey a direct command from God.
The Express crew questions Gallagher about the murders on Penacony, and Gallagher discusses the contentious relationship between the Family and the Watchmaker (the Father of Penacony and creator of Clockie and co.)
Bonus: all of the drinks you can make in this chapter are also references to books. The 'base' you choose determines which author you get, and the ingredients selects one of three of their books. Two of those authors are referenced elsewhere in this patch - Poe and Lawrence Block.
The Watchmaker is, quote Gallagher, "the root cause of all the anomalies in the Dreamscape", who betrayed the family and is apparently the source of the impossible deaths in Penacony. Gallagher believes the Family screwed over Mikhail, and Something Unto Death is the direct consequence.
Chapter 7: The Tell-Tale Heart
Short gothic/psychological horror written by Edgar Allen Poe. A madman recounts a murder he claims to have committed - he killed a man with unnerving eyes and hid the body beneath the floorboards in his house. Despite almost getting away with the murder, the madman is driven to confess his crime because he is haunted by the sound of the dead man's still beating heart, coming from beneath his house.
The chapter Acheron becomes playable.
A lot of attention is given to both a) Aventurine's eyes and b) Aventurine being a 'madman';
Ergo; Acheron + Aventurine (the madman) kill Aventurine (the man with the disquieting eyes/murder victim) - Acheron kills Aventurine directly, but it was a result of Aventurine's scheme that she did so. When I said I knew how Aventurine's story was going to go by this point, I wasn't kidding.
The madman in the Tell-Tale Heart can still hear the victim's heart beating beneath his floorboards; like the victim in the book, Aventurine ends up in a state of being dead but not quite.
Acheron's personal questline debuts here as well - it's called 'Good and Evil', which is the name of a philosophical text written by Frederick Nietzche that I have not read and have no plans to do so. Sorry. Aventurine had the good grace of having a lot of visual and literary allusions I'm familiar with - Acheron does not.
Chapter 8: All The Sad Tales
Doesn't seem to relate to anything, but most of this chapter's literary references are elsewhere. This is the chapter where we get a huge chunk of Aventurine's tragic backstory as he walks to his death.
The poem The Wasteland, specifically the 5th part 'What the Thunder Said', is directly quoted repeatedly throughout this chapter. I'll talk more about that in the Aventurine post.
Chapter 9: A Walk Among the Tombstones
A murder mystery by Lawrence Block featuring alcoholic detective Matt Scudder.
This chapter addresses multiple 'deaths' (tombstones) in one way or another;
Aventurine dies and meets Acheron in a place that's not quite the land of the dead, but prepares to continue his journey onward. the IPC prepares their next move following his death.
The Trailblazer reunites with the supposedly dead Firefly.
The true culprit, Gallagher, a bartender and the head of the Bloodhound Family, murders Sunday. I suppose Gallagher might be, symbolically, representative of the two things Scudder consistently has to deal with (murder and alcohol) lmao.

the 7-questions-ask: Mickey Mouse
Three facts about them from my personal headcanons:
*No matter how old he gets, he'll always go trick-or-treating on Halloween, and always write a letter to Santa before Christmas.
*His performance as Bob Cratchit in Mickey's Christmas Carol inspired Kermit the Frog to play the same role in The Muppet Christmas Carol. Otherwise, as the leader of the Muppets, Kermit would have felt obligated to play Scrooge, even though he wasn't really suited to the part; but Mickey made him realize he could play Bob, and he gave a speech thanking Mickey for the inspiration at the party following the movie's premiere.
*Every now and then, he stops by Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale to visit not only Walt Disney's grave, but the graves of his second and third voice actors, Jimmy MacDonald and Wayne Allwine (and of Wayne's wife Russi Taylor, longtime voice of Minnie). He makes special arrangements to visit after-hours, so he won't be hounded by fans and so his presence won't detract from the serene, solemn atmosphere for other visitors.
A reason they suck:
His treatment of the farm animals in Steamboat Willie, especially when he shakes and kicks the nursing piglets from their mother and then pokes the mother pig's teats to make her "sing."
A reason they are great:
His friendliness and warmth in general.
A reason I relate to them:
I also love entertainment and fun.
(what I consider to be) the top tier otp/ot3 for that character:
Mickey and Minnie forever!
Five things that never happened to the character that I believe should have happened:
An official origin cartoon revealing how he met Minnie, Donald, and Goofy, and how he adopted Pluto.
An onscreen appearance by his sister Felicity Fieldmouse, the mother of his nephews Morty and Ferdie, who so far has only appeared in comics.
A cartoon adaptation of The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was – a spookier spiritual successor to his version of The Brave Little Tailor.
An animated cartoon based on the 1990 drawing that shows him consoling Kermit the Frog after Jim Henson's death. I can imagine him telling Kermit all about how he coped with the loss of Walt Disney back in 1966.
A cartoon supposedly showing the making of Steamboat Willie, depicting all the cartoon characters as actors, and making it clear that the farm animals Mickey and Minnie mistreat in that classic short were just fellow actors and not really hurt.
Five people that character never fell in love with and why.
Daisy Duck. She's too hot-tempered and too feathery for his taste.
Clarabelle Cow. She's too tall for his taste.
Clara Cluck. Again, he's not into birds.
Snow White. He would probably see her as more of a sister figure, and besides, she's human.
Jessica Rabbit. She's married, she's humanoid, and in terms of aesthetics, he prefers "cute" to "sexy."

Film Journal #1: Steamboat Willie
Tumblr media
Steamboat Willie (1928)
The 1920's truly was the golden age of animation, the birth of Mickey Mouse and his monumental first ever film debut began in Steamboat Willie (1928) directed by Walt Disney and Ub Werks. It was the first feature to be released with synchronized sound, it put the previous soundless animations all into dust when comparing. It started a new era of animated film - breaking Walt off from his rival studios and putting a big spotlight on his own name.
The film doesn't really have too linear of a plot, it essentially is Mickey going on a ship and playing animals as his instruments - creating a festival of sound and definitely...some interesting visuals! (choked geese included). Mickey's girlfriend Minnie is also included in this film, aiding him in creating the symphony of music on board the boat.
Audiences truly were stunned by the film when watching it for the first time in theaters. Sound revolutionized the game, and it had folks going haywire wanting more. It was so successful that it even had a rerun in one of the largest theaters The Roxy, which resides in the big apple, New York.
It was hand drawn on with paper, celluloids (transpararent sheets), and ink. "Characters were drawn on cels and superimposed on a fixed background image to reduce the number of reproductions necessary to produce an animation."
I genuinely really enjoyed the animation, I thought it was really fun and extremely well made! Even for its time, this was fantastical to see, the elements of sound and visuals blended perfectly. Also, seeing Mickey in his first film was super entertaining and interesting, seeing the subtle changes to his new evolved form. As well as finally seeing the intro to all the Disney movie's where they use the little whistling tune as an homage. Even for its time, I can't even imagine how they could fathom to create such a flowy, smooth film! I also just really enjoy the 1920's animation style in general. I think it mainly came from the aesthetic style I loved from the game Bendy and the Ink Machine, obviously it being heavily inspired from Disney's.

For this class, I was tasked with watching "Momotaro's Divine Warriors" and reading Otsuka's Unholy Alliance. Now, similar to "Norakuro" and its cartoonishly goofy nature, "Momotaro's Divine Warriors" is an elaborate and clever method of indoctrinating children and citizens into wartime culture and propaganda. The usage of cartoon anthropomorphic animals as the main characters is a common way to soften the horrors of war. Another method of softening war and glorifying the violence associated with it that is seen in this film is the glorification of soldiers and the military. For instance, whenever onscreen with children, soldiers are fawned over and regarded as the "heroes" of the country. The children are all over them, asking what the war is like, stating that they'll become soldiers like them and become heroes of their country. By showing children acting like this, the creators of this film are gently pushing the children of their country to have these same viewpoints and desires. This film was essentially a giant propaganda effort by the Japanese government to try and make the war seem like some great achievement that Japan is going to fix Asia and make the world better by taking control.
Now, Otsuka's Unholy Alliance traces where these cartoon animal characters really became popular with children and in animation. Otsuka claims that "an aesthetic unification of Eisenstein and Disney under conditions of fascism" is what brought about the modern day, or Otaku, culture that surrounds most anime and their enjoyers. For example, the stereotypical person who goes to conventions, cosplays, is obsessed with computers, and lacks standard social skills would be considered a result of this "union". He claims that in the 1930s Disney cracked the code on how to make a character that children and adults both loved near unconditionally. The Mickey Mouse effect, if you will. Stating that both Disney and the Soviet Union combined to put pressure on Japanese art to change and abandon its art form, Otsuka seems to believe that this was a coordinated effort to "Disneyfy" Japanese animation. However, due to the international success that Disney was quickly finding, Japanese artists and studios rapidly adopted the construction of mass appealing characters in their animation and manga in order to keep up and attempt to surpass Disney.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we see Mickey Mouse in "Steamboat Willie" and two characters from "Momotaro's Divine Warriors" as they provide two examples of the usage of the cartoon animal characters that have become a stable of children's animation.

Just Over the Horizon
Ah, January. The month where films go to die. Or, at least, that’s what used to happen. The last few years, some straight up bangers dropped during the Cinematic Graveyard. This year is no different. Megan dropped and has been getting fantastic reviews. I planned for this to be the first movie of the year for me but, unfortunately, my city has been inundated with a bomb cyclone and basically washed out with thunderstorms for the past week. I’ll have to pass on Megan in theaters and check it out once it hits VOD in about a month. God bless this new normal with theater releases. Now, this isn’t a complete list. It’s literally the first month of the year and i am sure there are going to be a ton of other films that catch my eye as the next eleven creep forward. I mean, i haven’t even found my A24 entry for the year yet but it’s coming. Since The VVitch, that studio has had at least one film a year, that makes my “best of the Year” list. That said, there are a ton of films coming out this year which have piqued my interest and these are the few which are bubbling at the top.
Renfield
Tumblr media
I love a solid vampire flick. I love a solid unhinged Nic Cage performance. Renfield is a combination of the two, This thing is obviously a Nicholas Hoult vehicle bu, let’s be honest, the draw here is Cage’s Dracula. I thoroughly expect a top tier, hammed hp, performance out of Mr. Coppola, which is more than enough to get my but in that seat.
Evil Dead Rise
Tumblr media
I’ve been a fan of this franchise since the 2103 remake. No shade to the OG Raimi takes but his style isn’t really my flavor. Free from that type of film making, the Evil Dead franchise has become something very, very, special to me. I can’t wait to see what Lee Cronin has in store for us. And, if that red band trailer hints to what’s to come, i am going to very satisfied.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Tumblr media
I mean, it’s an MCU flick Of course I'm going to see this thing. I’m not expecting much, the Ant-Man franchise is just a fun diversion, but that Kang reveal was everything. I’m looking forward to see what Jonathan Majors can do with the role. After that absolutely unhinged take on He Who Remains, i my ticket was already punched for this one.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Tumblr media
This one is on the list based on pure curiosity. I’m a G1 apologist so Bumblebee was everything to me. Never been a huge fan of Beast Wars but i understand it’s place in Transformers history. The trailer leads me to believe this film is kind of a Hodge-poge of the Bumblebee aesthetic and those god awful Bayformers designs and i don’t know how i feel about that, thus my anticipation.
The Flash
Tumblr media
Bro, how could this not be on the list? It’s going to be a whole ass train wreck, regardless of how good or bad the film turns out. Like, Ezra Miller is a whole ass menace and he’s the “last man standing” from Gunn’s Machiavellian slaughter of the Snyderverse. This thing is going to make a ton of money based on that controversy, alone, mine counted among those rubber-necking dollars.
Knock at the Cabin
Tumblr media
A surprise dark horse from Shamallammadingdong. This dude surprised the f*ck out of me with Split and then immediately disappointed with everything that came after. Knock at the Cabin is probably going to another let down but I'll see it strictly to see something that week, i guess. It’s wild to see Jordan Peele out Shyamalan-in, Shyamalan, himself.
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey
Tumblr media
Let the Public Domain massacre of Disney properties begin! Blood and Honey is either the first or second of these properties to get the spiteful horror treatment of a beloved Mouse House franchise and I'm going to see it strictly because i want to see that gory remake of Steamboat Willie in five years. This flick is probably going to be dogsh*t but i am, for sure, supporting all of it!
Cocaine Bear
Tumblr media
Bro, it’s Snakes on a Plane but based on true events. There was a real life cocaine bear. Obviously I'm going to see this.
John Wick: Chapter Four
Tumblr media
Listen, John Wick is everything. This world, these characters; It’s all so rich and i love all of it. John Wick, for me, is like the MCU franchise. I’ll ALWAYS show up for one of these films. Whenever The Continental releases, I'll watch every episode. That Ana de Armas spin-off? Yeah, I'm all over that. It’s wild to see how far this franchise has come, from that one, genre disrupting, entry all those years ago.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3
Tumblr media
The swan song of James Gunn and the MCU was always going to be on this list. That first Guardians will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first film to ever make me cry as an adult. That opening scene is, to this day, absolutely debilitating to me. Also, the overall movie is excellent, easily top ten in the entire franchise. How can i not be there for vol. 3?
Oppenheimer
Tumblr media
I’ve been a huge fan of Nolan since Batman Begins. Yeah, it took him taking on the Bat to get me to dive into his catalog but I'm glad i did. Dude is a genius and it’s rare i don’t enjoy his films. I even really like Tenet and, according to everyone in the world, it’s terrible. It’s not. The Sh*t was sabotaged by the studio. Oppenheimer looks to have the full backing of Universal, though. We’ve seen what Nolan can do with the resources and i cant wait to see what he does with this very much brilliant, very much haunted, genius’ life story.
Dune: Part 2
Tumblr media
I made the mistake of passing on this in theaters when part One released. There was plague. There’s still a plague but i got, like, forty-seven shots so I'm comfortable braving the wild for this one. In terms of visuals, Deni Villaneuve is a god and i cannot wait to see what he does with the explosive climax to his Dune film. and i say film because this thing is, very obviously, a single, six hour film.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Tumblr media
It’s Spider-Man.
I just want to reiterate, this is an incomplete list. A the year goes on, i am more than certain a bunch of disruptors and dark horses will float to the top. Last year, Pearl came out of nowhere and impressed enough to make my “Best of” list so this is more a jumping off point than a complete register. All in all, this year might end up being one of the very best, ever. Maybe. We’ll see.

Maybe. We’ll see.
