Reading the fleetway Sonic comic now and

I'm convinced that Tails is his special little guy??

I mean, he's an asshole, no doubt, but he passes up a party (mind you, he loves being celebrated as a hero so much) to go looking for Tails

He goes looking at his "favorite place" and literally dons shades and a worse attitude at learning Tails was taken

He genuinely cares about him as his buddy? Sure he complains about him or insults hin fairly often, but he clearly likes having Tails around enough to want him back??

Are we gonna talk about how Tails breaks free from Robotnik's control because he can't bear to keep hurting Sonic, because he cares?

This scene too reminds me so much of that scene from Fang the Hunter issue 1 where Tails called for Sonic and Sonic bid himself to be patient and not lash out because Tails is his friend. Like again, Fleetway!Sonic is an asshole, but he's holding back when it comes to Tails even a little bit

There's just constant proof whenever Tails is put in danger or captured that Sonic cares about his well-being. In fact he cares so much he just kind of is just indifferent about those he puts in danger by zeroing in on saving Tails (and those he saves he doesn't necessarily save with intent to). In this issue specifically, Sonic, the animal companions with him, and an unconscious Tails get washed away in a current of water, and rather than worry about his own well-being or those of his companions, he yells at them to keep ahold of Tails in the water so he can take care of the badnik.

Personally I feel like this sequence speaks for itself? Although Sonic is fairly confident, he risks his life on the chance that he can steer the Death Egg off course (and we're not even factoring in whether he can escape in time), and sends Tails away in the only escape pod. He literally gambles his life on this act of saving Emerald Hill and worries first about securing Tails', even if only Tails may end up escaping.

There's also the setting? Tails crying for Sonic and calling him the bravest hedgehog he ever met, Sonic reacting like he didn't just narrowly avoid death and that Tails is just stating the obvious, the two of them floating down in the escape pod during the sunset

I don't have the picture space to show it, but there's also another part of this issue where Sonic continuously nags Tails to stay out of danger and to let him handle everything alone, and then (after falling into a trap), starts talking to himself about how glad he is that Tails wasn't around to see him make such a rookie mistake. It's easy to read as Sonic always leaving Tails behind because he doesn't think much of him or thinks he'll be in the way, but I don't think that's completely true! I get the idea that Fleetway Sonic likes having his buddy around just as much as he wants his buddy to be safe. So he brings him around everywhere he can, but he forces him to hang back during the dangerous bits. And that's not to mention how this issue showed just how much Sonic values Tails' opinion of him.

This is the first time Super Sonic ever appears in StC. Are we going to ignore that Fleetway!Super Sonic stops attacking and reverts back into regular Sonic because of Tails?

This is like Mecha Sonic in Archie's Mecha Madness special all over again, except Fleetway!Super Sonic is under no one's control. He stopped attacking because Tails bids him to remember them.

There's just so many little things about them in my reading so far that I almost can't believe it (and would hit the tumblr photo limit a number of times if I were to show it off)

If I had to label their relationship in StC, I'd say that, to Tails, Sonic is someone he admires greatly. He doesn't seem to be fond of Sonic's attitude (largely when it's aimed at those other than himself), and he expresses criticism as to how vain Sonic is and his eating choices, but ultimately he cares about Sonic enough to stick around with him and go on adventures from time to time. For Sonic, I think Tails is someone he secretly likes having around. He often criticizes him, and depending on his mood he'll do it whenever he gets an opening, but he's also just...bad at feelings. When Tails is in danger, he'll zero in on saving him, almost above all else, and then when he saves Tails he's going off about how he can't trust Tails to be alone, angry and annoyed. He's a jerk, but a jerk who cares more than he lets on about Tails. Tails isn't just some admirer, he's important to him, and at the same time, Tails' is someone whose opinion of him he values. Ahsjsjs and....he's also the kind of guy who would say something like "Hey, that's enough! Only I get to bully Tails!"

Is their relationship healthy? No😂 But also in StC it also comes off like...they're both choosing this. Despite everything they choose to be buddies

The Sonic the asshole and his special little fox

While there’s only one Sonic story in this first issue, there are a few other Sonic features, including this ad for a then-upcoming Sonic Adventure Gamebook. I’ve admittedly not read any of these gamebooks (I’ve only read Sonic and the Silicon Warriors, and that was a lot of years ago), but I’d like to check them out one day if I can ever find copies

They also have Speedlines, the fanmail corner. It looks like they put out a preview prior to the first issue and that’s how they’ve already got letters in advance. Most of them are kids talking about how excited they are and asking for game tips, since the Internet wasn’t much of a thing back then. But then you’ve got this letter:

I dunno if this is a genuine letter or something they made up for a laugh, especially since the writer is called Oldfash, which sounds fake, but I just find it funny that they added “No badge winner!” onto it, when all the other letters won a Sonic badge. If you’re not nice to Megadroid, he won’t give you a Sonic badge

To round out the issue, they provide a section you can tear off to write in, ranking the issue out of 100, saying what SEGA games you’d like to see included, etc. I remember this still being a feature when I started reading, but I’m not sure how long it lasts. Quite a while at least

I suddenly remember That you never told us how a meeting between Prime/Archie! Sonic and Fleetway (Amnesiac/Good) Super Sonic would go.

I imagine any meeting between Prime and Super would likely come after Prime has already had the misfortune of meeting Sonic, and subsequently had at least one (1) argument about Super. If the argument hasn't already happened by the time Prime and Super meet, it's definitely imminent. I imagine Prime would be a lot more forgiving of Super than Sonic is (partly because he just doesn't have the same baggage Sonic does and partly) so he'd be sympathetic to his plight. He'd be much quicker to believe Super when he says he doesn't want to be that evil person who hurts and kills people for fun. Sonic would scoff and call him a trusting idiot, but it's not that Prime is oblivious to or ignoring the danger that Super can cause, he just doesn't believe dogpiling the guy about it will actually help his situation

Sonic's reaction to finding out they're dating would just be more "I think you're fucking stupid" or, depending on how not-awful his relationship with Super is, just a quiet scoff. He probably tells Prime that if he's soooo fond of Super, then he can take Super with him back to his dimension, but he's probably also secretly worried about Prime actually following through, because if anything goes wrong, Sonic isn't there to help stop it. Chaos energy in the fleetway dimension is fucky and corrupted; for all his bitching and "don't come crying to me if he tries to kill all your friends", Sonic doesn't actually want another universe to suffer from that corrupted energy. He definitely doesn't want the chaos energy in the prime zone to become corrupted the same way his was, either

I can't imagine Scourge has much emotional attachment to Super to care too much. Like, he sees a part of himself in Super, specifically in how both of their identities used to be tied to Sonic, but he doesn't like that he can relate to Super. He doesn't hate or dislike him, but he definitely doesn't like him, either. He just often ends up being the one Ebony calls for out of everyone else in the freedom fighters because he's the one with the least amount of history with Super, so Super doesn't put him on edge the same way he does everyone else. So if Super started dating Prime, he'd probably just make some snarky comment about weak-hearted goody-two-shoes flocking together

Ultimately, the two of them together will probably mock the relationship. They probably only find out because one of them comes home and immediately starts bitching about how "did you HEAR Super and Prime are dating now???" and then they spend an hour talking shit about them. After all, even if Sonic has warmed up to Super a little, he probably still doesn't trust him or is comfortable being around him, and Scourge is a stubborn fucker who won't change his mind about disliking Prime out of sheer spite, so neither Prime nor Super have much of Sonic and Scourge's respect

Sonic the Comic liveblog- Issue 1

Starting off with the cover, while the art itself isn’t particularly notable, it’s interesting that they have a bunch of other Sega stuff too. Makes you wonder why the comic is named specifically for Sonic? Idk maybe its just because he’s the most well known Sega character.

I’ll read the the non-Sonic sections but since I'm really just here for Sonic, I don’t think I’ll discuss them in much detail, just pointing out anything that’s interesting.

Lmao the audience are called Boomers. Anyway, the free gift thing is something I associate a lot with UK comics, because I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it being a thing with US comics (feel free to correct me though). I used to read the Beano a lot as a kid and every other issue would have some cheap tat taped to the front.

Thinking about it, comic gifts are probably an absolute nightmare for lost media enthusiasts, because of course kids aren’t gonna preserve them! In the case of this issue’s stickers they’re just gonna be slapped into a book or onto furniture or whatever.

He’s round! Like a really cursed interpretation of Kirby using his copy ability on Sonic in Smash. Also, I actually really like the way you can tell this was coloured in marker, there’s something really charming about it

This art is a little janky but I actually kinda love it for that. There’s this sort of mixture of clearly using official art and sprites as a reference, but also making shit up to fill in the gaps

I think I have heard that name before. Don’t know shit about the character but I know that this is not the design I associate with the name. I’m prepared for this to be typical pilot episode/early issue retcon shenanigans though

That’s a pretty cool looking panel, neat choice to have it in silhouette

Overall that was a very basic story; pretty much just Sonic 1 summarised in a handful of pages, but this is Issue 1, it’s just setting up the basic idea of Sonic vs Robotnik. Plus, the Archie comics were a gag comic at first, they didn’t get serious until later so I assume it’s the same deal here.

To talk briefly about the Shinobi and Golden Axe comics, from an artistic stand point they are certainly more detailed and polished looking than the Sonic story. Although having seen bits and pieces of StC’s panels over the years, I know Sonic catches up in quality

Also shoutout to this little legend in the letters section who seemingly used to spend a lot of his pocket money on snacks. I don’t know how much wotsits used cost in ’93 but that’s an impressive amount

It's just like closing a door, you get very little sound loss from room to room until the door is fully closed. Anywhere you leave a gap greatly reduces it's effectiveness. The main issue with the home depot stuff is that it does NOT bend nearly as well as true MLV, which isnt' super flexible to begin with.Īlso regular MLV will be 1lb/sq ft, so it'll be block sound a bit better. 75lbs/sq ft it is still dense enough to work well as a sound blocker and doesnt' smell. Sally on the left there, sporting her “Ricky with a hair bow” design. She doesn’t have the same prominence in StC as she does on the American side of things, but she at least gets a bit of focus in the early days. As for Johnny, well…

THIS RABBIT’S DAYS ARE NUMBERED

Now, I promise I'll try not to make “Johnny’s dead” jokes at every opportunity, but it is interesting to see him being one of the first supporting characters introduced, knowing that he dies during the Sonic Adventure arc right at the end of the series. But in the middle of that, we get Johnny being a core member of Sonic’s Freedom Fighter team, so we'll have plenty more to say about him later

Sonic’s friends warn him of the dangers, but he doesn’t let that stop him and a short while later we’re introduced to another StC regular, Porker Lewis, who is named in this issue and goes onto have one of the most interesting arcs in the series imo Also, these panels are a strong contender for my favourites:

After Porker breaks the fourth wall, Sonic goes on to fight and defeat Robotnik’s machine. The others want to party, but Sonic has other plans, getting us our first mention of Tails in the series

I kind of like that Tails doesn’t immediately appear, but is alluded to in this first issue, since most other Sonic spin-off media at the time began with Tails already being around. It gives Tails's appearance some importance. Sonic and Tails have a very different dynamic in StC to most other universes, but we’ll get to that another time. For now, the story ends with the implications that Sonic’s friends think he’s a party-pooper

As far as first issues go, I like this. It’s a simple story that sets up the premise of the series without getting heavy into the lore. Robotnik traps Sonic’s friends in robots, so Sonic comes to rescue them. We get the next issue tease of Tails’s appearance to get readers to come back and then we’re done. It does what it needs to do and the art is nice, even if some of the small animals have those scary eyes and mouths in some panels
