Weekend Top Ten #537
Top Ten Games Shown at Not-E3 2022
I wasn’t going to do this. I had another Top Ten planned out. I felt that the disparate nature of “E3 Season” this year – the lack of One Big Show to tie it together, the fact that many big publishers have decided not to show anything at this time, etc – meant there was no need to do a big list of revelations. There was little in the way of spectacle, no real hardware news, no outrageous dance numbers or massive live cock-ups on stage. No one told you how you can share games on PS4, or told us we were breathtaking. It was just games.
But then two things happened. One, I’ve been really busy so haven’t written – or really even researched – any of the other ideas I had for this week’s list. And, two, there were actually a lot of games shown. Some brand new that I’ve not heard of before; others that we just saw more of and that looked really good or intriguing. And I started absent-mindedly listing them. And wouldn’t you know it? Soon I had a Top Ten.
So that’s what we’ve got this week. No bells or whistles, nothing fancy. These are just my ten favourite games shown in the last week or two, during these various summer gaming showcases. No Nintendo, no Sony, no EA, no UbiSoft. Will I do another list like this after they all show their wares? Almost certainly not. Which is a shame, because I bet Nintendo in particular would have some good stuff. Maybe even a title for their new Zelda! Maybe – maybe! – it’ll be in the Nintendo show where we finally get to see that GoldenEye remake/re-release. Maybe!
And that’s it, this week. Just a list of games that I like the look of. Please do enjoy.
Tumblr media
Starfield: fun fact: I’ve never played one of Bethesda’s big RPGs. Not Morrowind or Skyrim or Fallout. I always wanted to; they looked right up my street. I just never had the time – those things are pretty epic, yeah? Anyway, Starfield is hitting at a good time, and I’m very interested. And I think it looks great! I love the “NASA punk” aesthetic, and I just really want to play it. Pity it’s not coming out till next year, but all the same, this feels like my Next Big Game.
Ara: History Untold: another fun fact: I really love the Civilization games. So a new spin on the formula excites me. And even though concrete details are thin on the ground, this one seems to offer up the prospect of mixing and matching histories and eras – or at least I think it does. Anyway, it’s gonna be free for me to play thanks to the wonders of Game Pass, and I can’t wait.
Pentiment: now this one looks wild. Like a medieval parchment come to life, it’s some kind of adventure game or something, but really it’s the aesthetics that set it apart. I like adventure games, I like games will a cool and unique look. This fits all the bills.
Agent 64: Spies Never Die: where is GoldenEye?! I want my GoldenEye! In the meantime, we’ve got this, a spiritual remake. Very cool! They’ve done a great job modelling the aesthetic of the classic N64 game, so hopefully they’ve done as good a job with the gameplay and mission structure. And hopefully it’s got all kinds of funny cheats and stuff too.
Lightyear Frontier: I like Stardew Valley. And this game is basically a bit like Stardew Valley, except you more or less play a Transformer. Did you hear that? It’s Stardew Valley with Transformers.
High on Life: I’m not the world’s biggest Rick and Morty fan, but I have to say it’s much better than its fanbase. So hopefully the writing here will be up to snuff, because the concept of an FPS with a bevvy of humorous talking alien weapons is very intriguing.
As Dusk Falls: like I said, I like adventure games with cool aesthetics, and the painterly graphics on show here look really good. Like a Netflix drama or gritty graphic novel, hopefully it tell a compelling story and also just, y’know, play really well.
The Plucky Squire: now this one looks cool, and by that I mean looks cool. A really fantastic art design sees a kids’ picture book come to life, and then vibrantly explode across a 3D world. I’m not the world’s biggest fan of 2D platform games, really – I find them gorgeous and compelling but fiddly and difficult to play, despite more or less growing up on them – so I hope the gameplay is just as good as the graphics.
Laysara: Summit Kingdom: I do love a good strategy game. This one looks great, a sort of Settlers in the skies, a medieval Sim City up a mountain. The vertiginous locale seems to offer quirks and twists to the gameplay, and just generally it’s really pretty.
Forza Motorsport: I prefer my racing games to be more arcadey and fun; I’ve always preferred the Horizon games over mainstream Forza. But I still quite enjoy driving round tracks, even if I couldn’t be arsed with how the cars actually work. What excites me with this version is just how bloody good it looks; seriously, have you seen the graphics? It’s stunning.
There we go, ten cool games I’d like to play. Sadly no room for the full release of Ooblets, or the visually intriguing Scorn, or stuff like the kaiju dating sim Kaichu, or the fact that there’s a Moomin game coming out! Moomins, people! MOOMINS.

Thou, I need to admit it was first really good Bethesda showcase since they shown Fallour 5 in 2015 (!!). They stick to the same formula, with showing a little bit of every important aspect of their main game.
Also, no mobile game bullshit, all TESO/F76 patchnotes were at least stuck between more interesting games at Xbox event, so I guess I need thank Phil Spencer for that.

STARFIELD LOOKS SO GOOOOOOOOOD
and the only other thing from xbox showcase to interest me so far was bastion overwatch at the firing range, and thats only because that was really really cute and he was doing his best, so its not even a ‘i wanna play’ sort of thing its just ‘ah a palate cleanser’ sort of thing
BUT STARFIELD LOOKS GOOD AND VASCO IS SLOWLY BUT SURELY TRYING TO STEAL MY HEART
*edit* Okay, Still Wakes The Deep also looks really cool.  especially since its from the Dear Esther/Machine For Pigs people, their writing and dialogue is ASTOUNDING

Todd Howard fashion compilation and judgement 💅🏽✨
Tumblr media
2008, Fallout 3 Game Launch
Rolling out with the classic brown leather jacket. Unsure if this is its first public fashion sighting, unable to find any photo evidence pre 2008... Now under the jacket, a pac-man ghost shirt ? A most predictable, hokey late 2000s gamer shirt...All together paired with what will be familiar--dark wash jeans. This fit is, a 6.5/10. Definitely needed a different shirt. But the tickle of chest hair, gives it an additional half point. Teehee.
Tumblr media
2010, Spike VGAs
Looking really brown. Same brown leather jacket, now with an equally brown shirt. Earthy. Grimy. Just Like Skyrim (He announced it here). 7.5/10, the entourage of cloaked hooligans adds to the atmosphere. Cult leader Todd moment.
Tumblr media
2015, E3
DIFFERENT JACKET ! Specifically a racer jacket. A bolder black, and made of a more stiffer fabric. His equally bold, red Bethesda Studios shirt matches well with his jacket. Honestly...Quite commanding. Perhaps his first step on the path to slaying... 9/10 !
Tumblr media
2017, 20th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards
BY GOD !!!!! I am almost at a loss for words... The sleek blue blazer, complimenting his eyes... The crisp white button up, with a better peek at the chest hair we once saw back in 2008 ! His classic, meager yet knowing small smile. Impeccable ! Bellissimo !!! 10/10 BABY !!!
Tumblr media
2018, E3
Do my eyes deceive me ? A new brown leather jacket ! A different style, one similar to his 2015 E3 one ! This one is much more flattering to him than the '08/'10 jacket. His shoulders are more broad, compared to how soft they were in the old brown jacket. Combined with his plain-jane blue shirt that compliments his eyes once more...He looks very nice ! The watch adds a nice detail as well. I'll give it, an 8/10.
Tumblr media
2019, E3
Coming to you humble, in muted tones. After the disaster of FO76's launch, he wanted mercy. A dusty light brown suede jacket. With his dark shirt and pants letting him sink into the background. This is a man on the cross. His wrists bound by leather bracelets or something like it. Though he still wants to serve professional big boy with the same watch from last year. 7/10.
Tumblr media
2021, Bethesda Showcase
Quite the change up !!! Considering it was a digital showcase, it's a fun twist. A white v-neck cozied up by a zippered sweatshirt that matches the color of the Starfield background. Nice ! He looks like a sports coach. But the nicer one. Perhaps a health teacher. Still wearing that watch, as he should ! It's quite nice. 8/10 for cozy vibes.
Tumblr media
2022, XBOX and Bethesda Showcase
Return of the 2018 Leather Jacket King... And with a fresh cut no less !! Two varying blues in the shirt and jeans, a nice compliment to the background and stage ! I applaud him on venturing out to mid-wash. AND THE MATCHING PIECE DE RESISTANCE !! Those glossy brown leather shoes. Slay !!! His brown bracelet and watch also add to this fashion experience. A solid 9/10. Excited for next years fashion choices.

2023 Gaming Wrap-Up
Welcome back to what is apparently a yearly tradition on this blog: the Gaming Wrap-Up! As we drag ourselves to the end of 2023, it’s always good to take a look back at the last 12 months and try to figure out just what was going on there. And well, this year…kinda sucked. It had a lot going on - it was stressful and exhausting at best for so many of us, but there’s always a bit of good within the bad (for example, on a more personal note, this was the year where I actually got a few of my articles purchased by publishers! Now I can, by definition, call myself a professional writer! Go me!), and video games are always an excellent escape from reality.   2023 had loads of great game releases, including some highly-anticipated sequels and remakes, while the business side of the gaming world had a fair few blunders and foot-shooting (Unity, anyone?). Before the end of the year, let’s all take a moment to remember all the highlights of the gaming world of 2023 - enjoy!
Tumblr media
JANUARY-MARCH    Let’s get started with a bit of the old and a bit of the new - a pair of high-quality remakes of some classic survival horror games, Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, set a new bar for gaming remakes, with RE4 even being nominated for GOTY! Meanwhile, Pizza Tower took the indie genre by storm with its deranged animations and surprisingly catchy music, and Hi-Fi Rush ambushed us with a sneaky release and some toe-tapping rhythmic combat.   Fans of classic Nintendo games had a bit of a sad start to the year however, with the announcement that Nintendo would be completely shutting down all online services for the 3DS and Wii U, basically pulling the life support plug on the two platforms for good. Additionally, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) continues its streak of rough years; with X-Box, Sony and Nintendo all foregoing attendance, this years’ E3 was announced to be cancelled. With a rise in developers and publishers preferring digital and social media announcements over live shows thanks to the impact of COVID, could this be signalling the end of live gaming conventions like E3?
Tumblr media
APRIL-JUNE    Moving on, 2023 also saw the release of some particularly exciting sequels - Dead Island 2 finally released after 9 years in development hell while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom blew its GOTY-winning predecessor out of the water. Street Fighter 6 brought in Metro City veterans and newcomers alike, and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor continued the tale of Cal Kestis in his battle against the Empire in a galaxy far, far away.   From the small screen to the big screen, The Super Mario Bros. Movie joined the small-but-growing ranks of video game movie adaptations that are actually good, thanks to staying true to the games’ actual identity instead of trying to turn it into something else like so many other game-to-film adaptations. E3’s cancellation also wasn’t enough to stop the Summer Games Fest from being held, featuring a mix of live and digital shows and announcements. Also, this year was quite the mixed bag for game publishing companies - Embracer Group, a publisher for major development teams such as Gearbox Entertainment and Crystal Dynamics, went under some massive structural changes due to a major deal falling through, and was just one of many publishers that underwent huge changes in 2023.
Tumblr media
JULY-SEPTEMBER    The latter half of the year didn’t see quite as many major game releases, but it was certainly a case of quality over quantity - Baldur’s Gate 3, an absolute narrative feat, practically overtook the entire second half of the year for both those familiar with the series or D&D and players entering the Forgotten Realms for the first time. Oh, and Starfield was released too.   Meanwhile, a cornerstone of video game voice acting, Charles Martinet, retired from voicing the Mario bros. Having provided the iconic voices of Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi since 1994, Charles still works as a global ambassador for Nintendo in conventions across the world, while the superstar voice role would be taken over by Kevin Afghani later in the year.   Back in the business side of the gaming world, Unity - the group behind one of the most prominent game development engines in the industry - completely shot themselves in the foot this year as they announced an incredibly oppressive retroactive licensing fee to begin next year. This new fee would mean that every single developer that had ever used their engine would need to pay Unity for every copy of their game that has ever sold, even from before the fee took effect. Naturally, everyone disliked this, especially within the indie game community. The sheer amount of backlash caused Unity to rework the agreement to be “less aggressive”, but their reputation is beyond saving now.
Tumblr media
OCTOBER-DECEMBER    2023 looks to be closing off with a bang - in yet another major simultaneous release, October 20th saw Spider-Man 2 expand the urban playground of everyone’s favourite web-slinging duo while Super Mario Bros. Wonder brought Nintendo’s flagship franchise in a fresh new direction. Meanwhile, another highly anticipated sequel, Alan Wake II, spun a terrifying new narrative just in time for Hallowe’en.   Of course, the biggest talking point for the end of the year was the Game Awards! Baldur’s Gate 3 beat out some incredibly tough competition for Game of the Year and swept the rest of the awards alongside Alan Wake II; a handful of exciting new games were announced, including a sequel to the classic World of Goo and a vampire-hunting action adventure starring Marvel’s Blade; and we learned that the Call of Duty developers can’t take a joke. However, the biggest announcement arrived just before the awards, bringing the entire gaming community together for one of the most anticipated sequels in video game history (besides Half-Life 3): Grand Theft Auto VI. Set for a 2025 release, 12 years after its predecessor, GTA6 returns to the sunburnt beaches of Vice City, introducing a modern Bonnie & Clyde as its’ pair of playable protagonists Lucia and Jason.
Tumblr media
LOOKING FORWARD    So, aside from the GTA fans that are probably cryogenically freezing themselves until 2025, what are your plans for next year now that 2023 is nearly over? There’s plenty of other games to look forward to - Star Wars and Marvel fans will be getting another exciting set of games with Star Wars Outlaws putting players in the shoes of the galaxy’s next big name in the galactic underworld, while Wolverine will be hacking and slashing his way through the neon-lit Madripoor. Taking our hands off the controller for a moment, a handful of other games will be taking their turn on the silver screen with a promising-looking Fallout streaming series and a somewhat more sketchy-looking Borderlands film. Can’t be any worse than the Halo series, right…right?
I mentioned in last years’ wrap-up that 2023’s E3 is hopefully back on track, which has aged a bit poorly; well, there’s no need to worry about that this time as next year’s E3 has already been cancelled. At least that means saving on tickets, but is the age of big gaming conventions coming to a close? Time will tell, especially depending on if Summer Games Fest is still in the works. Maybe things are switching to a more digital-based platform for game announcements - as someone not fond of crowds, that suits me just fine.
But, hey, that’s not until next year. Until then, I hope you enjoyed this look back at the gaming world of 2023, and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2024!   Happy holidays!

I really, really want starfield to come out already! I have said that a thousand times now but it's still true lmao. Idk if it will be goty, we'll have to see, but I've been playing bethesda games since oblivion so I do know what I'm getting into and what to expect, generally speaking (bugs) so I'm very hopeful!
I also have like, zero expectations so there's not a huge chance I'll be disappointed. The e3 trailer last year blew my mind so that's good enough for me
I just hope it's good!!!!! I want to enjoy it!!! I want to feel like I'm 13 years old playing skyrim for the first time on my dad's xbox again having the time of my life. cowboy times in space. I don't even plan on preordering it or buying it outright, I'm gonna use gamepass to test the waters.... so I'm gonna be so sad if it's another flop. ever since they announced starfield's development I've been sitting here waving my little "go starfield!!! you can do it!!!" flags.

i remember when fallout 3 was first announced, i watched that first e3 gameplay footage on a loop for hours. i did the same for skyrim and fallout 4. i was so goddamn excited for those games and i couldn’t get enough footage of them.
now i feel i’m going to be doing the same for starfield. i’ve already watched the gameplay reveal twice and i suspect i’ll be watching it many more times until it releases.
i’m allowing myself to be excited about this game, for better or for worse. bc life is short and oftentimes horrible, so why not enjoy what i can while i can?
