High Surge baby!!! Finally did some work for my AU Splatband <3 they’re actually featured in my fic on AO3, “Toxins Hit Heavy on Festival Nights” (It’s a Spyke fic cause I’m a sucker, also it’s explicit so please adhere to those guidelines <3) I’m hoping to an actual drawing at some point, but for now enjoy this experimental one!

Hm… splatoon… reincarnation au

People start having strange dreams and feelings of deja vu. Those who look deeper into it find out reincarnation is real and they and others have lived numerous lives.

Flo knew/had a hunch about it the full time and it turns out she’s in touch with spiritual stuff and can help people look back into previous lives with meditation and rituals. That, and other methods both tried and true and … more recent and possibly less reliable surface.

Chaos, hilarity, and that sweet sweet angst ensue as they track how far back their souls go.

Oh, and discourse, because at least one of Inkopolis’s favorite musicians has blood on their hands from all this.

Headcanon: The Agents have a Splatband

This is a headcanon I've had for a while.

All of the Agents are related to other idol musical groups, and Captain 3 already has the DJ Sango thing going on, so I think it makes perfect sense that the NSS Agents would join forces and start a band whenever they're not out saving the world.

Captain 3/DJ Sango is the lead producer

Agent 8 is the lyricist and lead vocalist because of the poetry from OE

Neo 3 is the drummer

Agent 4 could be either lead guitarist or bassist

4 also does backup vocals for 8 sometimes

Obviously they do a lot of collabs with Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, and Deep Cut (They probably have one big collab album that's considered one of the greatest albums of all time in the Splatoon world or something)

At first they get recognition because of their connections but then they branch out to do their own thing while still building their own audience. I kinda like to toy around with the idea of them becoming their own idol group, but they probably wouldn't like that much attention so that might just become it's own AU entirely if I can flesh that out more.

Does this mean Spyke is a Grimmsnarl?? What else makes me curious is what the shop keepers are in the au.

ANON I LOVE YOU!!! I couldn't think of anything for him! I completely forgot about this pokemon. Grimmsnarl fits pretty well for him, since his "hair" is one of his most defining thing about him.

Instead of giving him super sea snails, he'll ask for Shelders, specifically ones that belonged to Slowpokes for the delicious and soft tails. (Don't worry Marina should be fine.)

As for the other shopkeepers, I haven't really thought of much for them. So far I've been focusing on the idols, agents, villains, and the splatbands. All I know is that Fred Crumbs is a Lickilicky.

Splatbands Idol AU Part 1 - Ichiya and Namida as The Squid Sisters

Thought I’d finalize my designs for this idea (it’s not really an “AU” despite the title bc the designs are kinda the main focus) where the main bands and idols for each game swap roles. So OTH are Wet Floor, Deep Cut are C-Side, and ofc, the Squid Sisters are Squid Squad. Ichiya and Namida specifically, since I like to think of them as a duo and their colors even fit Splatoon’s main colors of blue and orange!

feat. some kinda lazy art bc I don’t rlly wanna do lineart esp since I’m gonna have to draw the other two groups as well lol. Pretty happy with their designs tho, I think I fused them well.

Even tho this concept is mostly focused on the band characters, this does mean that the idols take their place as well (along with the other band members, so the main band of Splatoon 1 is now Callie, Marie, Ikkan and Murasaki). It gets kinda confusing if you think too hard about it (esp for OTH lol) so we’re just not gonna do that. It’s mostly so I can draw the band characters in cute outfits lol

Anyway Meet Squid Squad! Here to bring news, music, and splatfests to a plaza near you.

The Squid Sisters have a decent amount of story, and although I’m already said in going to worry too much about that, it is pretty easy to merge the squid sisters and squid squad’s stories together, so why not? Instead of growing apart in Splatoon 2 they full on break up, but then get back together and instead start to use pseudonyms (Agent 001 and 002). Guess that means Ikkan and Callie are chill but just distant.

Their personalities are the same tho. Ichiya is still an asshole in Splatoon 1 lol. Maybe not really on the news, but you can see it in Octo Valley for sure. And then I bet He’s nicer in Splatoon 3 but his first reaction to C-Side is definitely not “I love them”

As for Namida, she’s a lil less smug than Marie, but she’s still the more sarcastic of the two, both on camera and off. She’s a little relieved that Agent 4 never heard of Squid Squad and feels weird about being called “boss” all the time.

They both play their instruments on stage during splatfests along with singing, kinda like Marina in We’re So Back. All their songs minus Calamari Inkantation are Squid Squad songs with a more pop-like tinge. (Ikkan left bc he didn’t like all the pop Callie was writing lol).

oh yea and have to mention they probably are agents but they’re not related idk how they’d know captain cuttlefish. Or maybe captain cuttlefish is someone entirely different! Who knows!

Once again this is more of a fun concept than a fully fledged AU. None of these confusing or vague things are gonna get concrete explanations, I just like speculating abt this type of thing.

Splatbands Idol AU Part 2 - Mizole and Ryan as Off The Hook

Mizole and Ryan form the hit idol duo Wet Floor. They tend to disagree a lot and often argue both on stage and on the news, but fans enjoy watching their petty squabbles and find their dynamic fun. It seems they themselves do as well, as even after numerous threats from both Mizole and Ryan, they’re still together and even finished a world tour recently.

after picking up the news job, people started calling them “the new Squid Squad.” Ryan was flattered, but Mizole would rather not be compared to Squid Squad unless it’s because they’re better. (But even he seemed concerned back when Ichiya first disappeared)

had fun with these ones! Their designs aren’t as monochrome as ichiya and namida’s so it was interesting to work with

story and lore speculation below

I guess I should address the whale shark in the room. Since Ryan is an inkling, the original OTH lore is pretty much broken. And instead of trying to shamble together some sort of explanation or compromise, I’m just gonna…ignore it! I’m trying to make myself not take this thing too seriously bc if you think too hard it all falls apart lol. So if something is too confusing, I’m not gonna worry about it. Just look at them wearing cute outfits don’t question the context

this (and the fact that there isn’t much wet floor lore) means I probably won’t draw Pearl and Marina in a band called Off The Hook with the other Wet Floor members. But in my vision they’re wearing their springfest or suffer no fools outfits. (Might do Deep Cut though, but no promises)

Splatbands Idol AU Part 1.5 - Callie and Marie as Ichiya and Namida

Bit of a smaller explanation needed here. Ichiya and Namida are the idols, so Callie and Marie are the guitarist and keyboardist of one of the freshest bands! Since they can’t be the Squid Sisters for obvious reasons, it’s called Squidmark (Beika misremembers Squid Squad as “Skid-Something” I thought it was better than nothing lol - might change it tho), and it’s a pop-punk band comprised of Callie, Marie, Ikkan and Murasaki.

Once again, their stories are similar-ish so we can swap/combine them pretty easily. there’s a lot less drama with the bands in this AU since most of the canon stuff is centered around ichiya lol. Ikkan does leave Squidmark, but no one shot each other and he and the others are on good terms. Even though the members drift apart a bit after he leaves, they don’t fully break up and keep making music through Splatoon 3, even picking up a new bassist along the way. That isn’t to say that it was all perfectly happy go lucky all the time but it’s overall way more chill than in canon.

Pearl of Off The Hook and Frye of Deep Cut seem to have a bit of a rivalry with Callie. They don’t ‘hate’ her (bc she never did anything wrong in the first place) and it’s mostly just for show. But their fans don’t seem to really know that and tend to tear each other to pieces online.

Splatbands Idol AU Part 3 - C-Side as Deep Cut

Kikura, Beika and Uotora make up the group C-Side, part time idols and full time bandits who fill Splatsville with a chaotic and heavy sound that the masses can’t get enough of. They take a lot of pride in their home of the Splatlands and are known to be quite protective of their turf, not hesitating to go after other bands if they believe they’re encroaching on C-Side’s territory.

these designs were probably the trickiest to do (mostly kikura’s bc it was hard to balance the colors right) but I do rlly like them! Deep Cut and C-Side blend the best with each other not just bc they’re both trios but bc they’re both protective of the splatlands kinda mean towards other groups. C-Side are even implied to have met in middle school just like Deep Cut!

I’m not sure if Beika and Kikura would still be shark and eel tamers since they’re not from the Hohojiro or Onaga clans (unless Beika is but that’s just a theory a game theory) but they still have a similar role in hero mode, looking to take the treasure for themselves and eventually becoming neo 3’s allies (and Namida’s faithful workers).

…and deep cut don’t have any other outfits seen in game besides their splatfest variants, so I only have to do one drawing for these! Now that all the designs are done for this AU (unless I decide to draw off the hook or deep cut, which I probably won’t) I’ll just keep making edits or art for it whenever I want to. Keep an eye out! (And ofc if u want to make edits or art with my designs ur free to)

Everyone is a doll, some porcelain, some fabric, it varies. Each band and idol group has their own unique style and house. Alternatively they all live in one huge dollhouse with a room to themselves.

They all live together in this doll world, a picturesque world of patchwork and porcelain, a world free of woe… or it should be…
