A couple of weeks ago I re-read* Jose Saramago’s 1995 novel, Blindness. In the book, first a man sitting in a car, then his doctor (an ophthalmologist), followed by a small group of people become blind. They are quarantined in a disused psychiatric hospital, guarded by soldiers ordered to shoot on sight (ha!)** anyone trying to leave. The hospital wards fill-up, chaos ensues. Eventually…

dumbledore is one hundo after a spice bag, as are ron and tonks. they are the three people who have made the correct choice.

as for the others...

harry [dursleys] and tom [orphanage] are obviously choosing the plainest option - cod and chips. tom would go in for mushy peas and a packet of benson and hedges alongside his. harry - given his canonical sweet tooth - is getting some sort of deep-fried chocolate bar as a chaser.

hermione [pretentious] is having the thinking woman's fish order - plaice and chips. unless she's been drinking, when she - like ginny - loves a battered sausage for the innuendo potential.

arthur's having scampi, because that seems the most muggle, and a selection of every sauce in the place. molly's having haddock, which she considers respectable, and is being joined in that choice by mcgonagall.

sirius [depressed] is taking the risk on a chipper pie - a gristly steak-and-kidney that's been sitting under a heat lamp all evening, for example. he prefers the rats he ate while living in that cave.

lupin [there] is having plain chips, no sauce or anything.

snape [ill-tempered] is going for one of northern ireland's greatest chip shop creations - a pastie supper. which can - like him, to be quite honest - best be described as a lump of mystery meat.

neville [northern] is obviously having chips and gravy, in fear that his gran would disown him otherwise.

luna [disconnected from reality] is going for the other one of northern ireland's greatest chip shop creations - a cowboy [pronounced coyboy] supper.

any malfoy [posh] is leaving the function and never speaking to you again if you suggest going to the chipper [good]. but narcissa secretly loves a curry butty.

bellatrix [unhinged] is indulging in a habit i didn't realise was unusual until i went to uni in england, and slapping tinned pineapple and thousand-island dressing on top of a portion of chips and calling it "hawaiian".

Eviction by Spicebag

Disrupt 7-11-23

Contiuing with Photoshop, I took inspiration from one of my favourite modern Irish artistis, Spicebag. As mentioned in my research, his remix of the Daniel MacDonald Eviction painting was a biting political piece that made ripples in Irish discourse at the start of the year. I wanted to mimick his concept of remixing an older painting set during the Irish Genocide ( by Daniel MacDonald of course).

I used the different “select” tools to cut and paste Irish homeless people into this scene of the potato blight.

I decided to paste the sleeping man into the mountain range purely because he matched up with it. It was a total accident. I used the value and light settings to make sure he blended into the mountain range.

I remixed one of my own paintings for the disrupt brief by adding red needle and thread through the lips. I added a drop shadow to give the piece a 3D feel and to make the thread pop.

Continuing on from the animation side of things, I applied what I learned yesterday in Procreate to create this simple clip. Using layers as frames, this was a quick test which I’d like to develop further. I kept the frame rate low so I could save myself drawing so many frames.

just had a smoothie, a bag of crisps, a joint, 5 multivitamins, echinacea extract, a chocolate bar, 6 cups of tea, 5 cigarettes, a tofu spicebag, 3 more joints, a testosterone shot, and a yoghurt bowl. good morning!

Of all the food I’ve eaten abroad, the relatively new Dublin staple, the “spice bag”, has quickly become one of my favorites. Despite its humble appearance, the ubiquitous brown paper bag does not contain your average chips but rather a remarkable medley of fried chicken, onions, peppers, and, of course, classic Irish chips all tossed in an aromatic blend of unknown yet still mouth-watering spices. I stumbled upon the spice bag after a cabbie sung it’s praises and described its growing cult following to me. With such high local enthusiasm, finding it was the most pressing item on my itinerary. I quickly discovered that the hype is well deserved. Contrary to what the doctors and health bloggers tell you, everybody needs unhealthy, fried food like the spice bag. It may destroy the body, but it nourishes the soul. As I ate my last spice bag during my short stay in the city, I thought to myself: if this orgy of grease and calories brings me closer to death, I will willingly go with a full stomach and empty brown paper bag in hand. Cheers, and please forgive the poor iPhone photo.

Disrupt Research 12-10-23 - Statement

For the Disrupt brief, I decided to focus on the disruption of Irish culture and language.

The Irish language survived as an oral tradition so I felt the best way to explore this visually was the mouth.

As a primary source, I used photos of my own mouth and my friends mouths for reference to start off. I used actual dentures and researched a dental laboratory for further primary research.

The work of Francis Bacon was my jumping off point in terms of the types of imagery I'd like to create. His work is visceral and grotesque and has inspired me immensely to convey the brutal history associated with the erasure of the Irish language/ culture.

The work of Spicebag has influenced me to take a more satirical direction with my project. His work is scathing, commenting on the state of things without holding back which is the kind of energy I'd like to bring to my own work.

Aideen Barry's mulit-faceted work has moved me to create more moving image based work like animation and video. Not only is it a way to continue my exploration of different media, but her work also grapples with similar themes as mine such as cultural disruption and Irish identity.

I created some thumbnails for possible routes I could take for this project.

Francis Bacon's interest in the human mouth also links in quite well with my project so far.
