Normally I don’t fill requests, participate in exchanges, or respond to prompts. I work too slowly and deadlines can straight up kill my motivation.
However!
This year for SpecRecs2021, despite not being actually signed up or officially part of the exchange, I had an idea.
An idea inspired by that particular moment or inflection point in a night of drinking where you’re so sloshed that the entire world -- no matter how absurd! -- makes sense to you. And you just go with whatever happens.
Enter ST&R candidate Nihlus Kryik accidentally trying to pick up his Spectre mentor in a bar, getting ‘robbed’ by an asari dancer at tit-point, and then needing to plan his own funeral when he finally sobers up.
Without a doubt the stupidest thing I have ever written, but I also could not stop laughing while writing it.
I dashed this off in maybe two days? Very-super-secret beta reading by @datsonyat (thank you!) and another fandom friend.
Full disclosure: this story is a stand-alone no-Reapers AU take on a different sort of meeting than the one I’m going to be using for my main Blackwatch!Saren / “Air Needing Light”-verse.
While it is maybe-a-one-shot, there’s a chance I’ll also write some more vignettes for this alternative no-Reapers AU Saren and Nihlus...
Thank you to everyone who has already commented, added kudos, or recommended this fic! It was a real struggle not to fess up to my crimes until the appropriate moment.

Author reveal for the SpecRecs2021 exchange was yesterday, and since I wrote three (!!!) fics for it, I figured I’d do a masterpost of them here.
a twenty year dark night (but now i see daylight) for @lesbianically
- Lizbeth/Shiala from Feros in ME1, in a quiet moment during the reaper attack on Zhu’s Hope in ME3. I’ve always liked the ME1 side characters, none of the ones from the later games really seemed to compare. I also always wanted to do something with the Zhu’s Hope hivemind battle vs the reapers in ME3, since that sounds like the absolute coolest fight we only got to learn about from an email. Hence this fic, where we hang out with Lizbeth and Shiala and explore the Zhu’s Hope telepathy a bit. I had a bunch of fun writing it, and I liked being able to give back to my gifter from the holiday exchange!
kidfic #14 in A major for @dr-ladybird
- Miranda/Jacob kidfic (sorta, they don’t keep the kid). Wherein Miranda and Jacob are inspired to talk about their feelings by the unfortunate necessity of keeping Shepard from babysitting. I absolutely loved dr-ladybird’s prompt of Miranda and Jacob grappling with parenthood and trying not to become their fathers, I couldn’t let it pass without writing a story for it. I was always fascinated by Miranda and Jacob’s relationship, so I had fun exploring that as well.
i looked over it and i ached for @yourlocalpriestess
- The, uh, 20k Shepard/Saren canon au, complete with the canon character deaths. I read a whole lot of sad Saren meta early in my Mass Effect fan experience, which made me kind of want to write a more cathartic tragedy for him than canon Mass Effect was. I stuck Shepard in Anderson’s role, so she and Saren could get a head start on meeting each other, and let their story play out - from enemies to friends to frienemies with significant unresolved romantic tension - knowing the whole time that Saren was already indoctrinated, and nothing Shepard did would save him in the end. And for kicks, I added in some Anderson & Nihlus found family elements, because characterizing Saren and Shepard as reluctant mentor!parents was fun and also makes the whole thing just that much sadder. I am not even slightly sorry.

this year I took part in @spectre-requisitions-exchange for the first time and it was really nice! I got assigned to make work of a rarepair for @lady-halibuts-convos and had a very hard time deciding on one (I hope to finish all the abandoned wips of the others soon) but finally came up with this wholesome picture of Macen and Avi having a soft and sunny day out on their vespa! I also received the sweetest and most wonderful fic as well, and really hope I’ll find the time to make art for that too soon <3 thank you everyone!

Sign-ups for the Spectre Requisitions exchange will be possible from January 19th to February 1st. You must fill out at least five unique requests and three unique offers (requests and offers do not necessarily have to be the same!).

A BIG WARNING ABOUT USING ‘ANY PAIRINGS’: Any pairing means exactly that, that you are willing to get or create fanworks for any pairing. We cannot control what characters or prompts are in an “Any Pairings” request. Thus, it should not be used for a request like “Any Garrus Vakarian fic”. “Any pairing” requests should only be requested for when you really want to see a certain trope or kink (and don’t care which characters are used) and should only be offered if you want the sheer challenge of a pure mystery! The only thing we will allow you to limit it by is the category of relationship, eg Gen, F/F, M/M or F/M. Anything else put into the box will be ignored so chose this option CAREFULLY.
If you would like to participate but do not have an AO3 account, please send us a message and we will get you an invitation.
One Important Warning About DNW: Please add your DNW (Do Not Wants) to your sign-ups. We cannot enforce DNWs that are only in letters!
How Do I Sign Up? Instructions beneath the cut:
1) Go to the Sign Up Form at AO3 while you are logged in (or go to the Spectre Requisitions Collection for this year and click “Sign Up”)
2) Click the checkmark on “Mass Effect - All Media Types” for the fandom!
3) Start writing the name of your favorite character/pairing from the nominations. Don’t forget to check the spreadsheet if you need inspiration!
4) The box should start to autofill as you type; if it doesn’t, simply enter things as they are in the tagset. Select your pairing of choice. You can have one or two pairings per request, and may have ten requests total. This gives you a total of 20 potential pairings to request at maximum, and the minimum is 5 requests and 3 offers.

Note that the box is still active and allows you to fill more in. If you are planning on requesting only the minimum, please only fill one in per box.

Now, the box is gone, and you’ve maxed out this request set. Note that when you’re doing multiple pairings, you’ll have to put your prompts/likes/DNWs for both pairings in the same box. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’ve got more questions!
5) Decide whether you would like to potentially receive fanart or fanfic, or both. Check the applicable box(es) or select “any” for both.
6) Give your author some idea of what you want to see in the description box.
Good things to list: general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, squicks/triggers/do-not-wants, or anything else you’d like the writer to know. Make sure you list things you definitively do not want. Authors and artists are absolutely forbidden to ignore squicks and triggers. Otherwise, the only guideline of your prompt authors/artists is unequivocally beholden to is the requested pairing, though they are encouraged to take your preferences into consideration.
7) Repeat between 5-10 times, as you like!
8) You may write a letter that goes more in-depth and post it to your Tumblr, DreamWidth, public Google doc, or another platform, and then fill in the URL in the letterbox.
9) Fill out your offers. You must fill out at least three unique pairings you would be okay with writing and can choose one or two pairings to fill in per request. If you have any comments for the moderators, please put them in the “Notes for Mods” section. This should be used for people you don’t want to match with, subjects you feel you can’t/won’t draw/write, or other information that you think may be helpful for matching you with a good assignment.
A BIG WARNING ABOUT USING ‘ANY PAIRINGS’: You may choose to offer ANY, but this means you could be matched to ANYONE who has signed up for the exchange. Do NOT pick Any Pairings if you are not up for a challenge! The only thing we will allow you to limit it by is a category of relationship, eg Gen, F/F, M/M or M/F. Anything else cannot be controlled so chose this CAREFULLY.

He knew that there would be intense combat and hard choices ahead of him, but he was definitely not prepared to get dragged into the tragedy that's been building between his mentor and the Spectre Saren Arterius.

Nominations are LIVE!
Time to get to nominating this year’s delicious rare pairs!
When nominating, please fill in “Mass Effect – All Media Types” in the fandom box.
As a reminder, both gen (&) and romantic (/) relationship tags are allowed for this exchange. Any relationship that fulfils the criteria below is eligible! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask the mods!
ELIGIBILITY RULES:
A pairing must have 200 or less works when viewed with completed works OR
NEW: A pairing may have over 200 works, but when viewed with completed works and otp:true parameters, the amount of remaining works is both under 200 and less than 1/3rd of the total number of works.
For Example:
* If Adrian Victus/Steve Cortez has 138 works, then it will be accepted as it has less than 200 works. No further filtering is needed.
* If Volus God (Self-Declared)/Liara’s Hanar Half-Sister has over 200 works, but when searched with the above parameters, only has 5 works, it would be allowed as it would have met the under the 1:3rd ratio rule.
* If Brooks/Krogan Wondering About Fish on the Citadel has over 200 works, but when searched with OTP: true and completed works parameters, has 100 works, then it would not be allowed, as the ratio between the completed works and completed works with just the pairing (otp:true) would be too high to qualify. This new rule is meant to help pairings that are commonly used as “side pairings” but rarely are featured in works where they are the focus.

If this is your first year or you just want a guide to find out how to do nominations, please read below:
1) Go to the Ao3 Tagset Page for Spectre Requisitions while logged into Ao3. A tagset is what most Ao3 fan exchanges use to determine what relationships (in Spec Rec’s case) or other criteria are used for an exchange.
If a pairing is not nominated, it will not be able to be used for sign-ups, regardless of whether it would have been eligible otherwise. (Example: Suvi/Chakwas, while certainly being eligible as far as total works go, won’t be an option to ask for if it’s not nominated.)
If you don’t have an Ao3 account, contact the mods, we’ll be happy to help you get one with an invite link!
If you do have an AO3 account and you’re logged in, you should see this button in the corner that says “Nominate”:
2) Click the Nominate Button.
You should wind up with a page that looks like this, with 1 fandom tag and lots of relationship fields to fill out:
3) Fill out the Nominations Sheet.
For fandom, please use “Mass Effect - All Media Types”. We only use Mass Effect - All Media Types because it gives us the highest chance of getting that sweet, sweet Mass Effect content in there regardless of potentially sticky couples (for example: crossovers between a book and a game, or between the Mass Effect Trilogy and Andromeda, or crossovers between other media and Mass Effect) and because Ao3 frankly doesn’t like it when we have couples wandering through different fandoms in the tagset.
For Relationships, any pairing/threesome/moresome that meets the eligibility rules. For most pairings, Ao3 should help autocomplete it for you -- but if you come up with a very original pairing (or AO3 is feeling unhelpful), it may require you to type in the full thing. If it does not auto-complete, don’t worry - you can still submit it! Pairings should be in alphabetical order of names. One pairing per line, please!
4) Submit your Nominations! Just click the button on the bottom, and you should be off off and away!
FAQ:
How can I tell what is under 200 completed fics? I’m not a mind reader, C-sec officer!
You can search AO3′s tags here to find pairings for a given character (canonical only gives you pairings big enough that Ao3 has declared them canonical categories). It should look something like this:
If you see a number under 200 here, you’re golden! Submit away. If it’s over 200 here, however, don’t despair - check the completed works. For example, let’s look at this couple, Garrus/Tali:
Doesn’t look eligible if you just do a tag search. However, if you click the tag and then do a search for completed works only and you might be surprised!
To do this search for completed works, look at the “Sort and Filter” sidebar and scroll down until you reach the “More Options” field and under “All Works”:
Click complete works only. And in this case, you’d find this couple is, in fact, eligible!
However, let’s say you look at the couple and find they are still over 200, as in the example below?
Well, there is one last thing to check:
Go back to the sidebar, then down to More Options and scroll down to “Search within results”:
OTP: True will show you ONLY the works that are tagged with JUST the target couple. When you sort and filter, you will see a total. In this example’s case, that number is 30:
What this means is that off the 204 works in Garrus/Tali right now, only 30 only focus on Garrus/Tali as a couple. As a result, the ratio of otp:true works to completed works is less than 1/3rd of the total, and the couple would be allowed to participate.
What if I accidentally nominate something that’s not eligible? Will I get in trouble?
Nah. You might wind up with it being rejected, but we assume most people operate in good faith in their nominations. If we reject a couple, we will always put it in the spreadsheet for the year linked on the sidebar with a reason why.
How many things can I nominate?
10 pairings - so choose carefully what you’d like to see and write. That covers both Andromeda and Trilogy, and all the novels, comics, etc.
Can I nominate, even if I’m not sure I’ll sign up or don’t plan on signing up?
Of course! Nominating isn’t a binding process - you’re only voting for what you’d like to see. You don’t have to sign up after nominating things - in fact, nominations are anonymous, so we can’t tell what you’ve nominated.
Are there any special rules/restrictions on what I can/can’t nominate?
Only the eligibility rules.
Can I nominate Original Characters?
Yes - ish. We allow original characters who are defined enough to give the person who matches on the original character something to go on, but not so much so they have to do an exhaustive amount of research on a fanon character. For example:
Allowable OC nominations:
Female Asari Spectre/Female Cerberus Agent - both these roles are defined in terms of what category of pairing they want (f/f), and the two roles give someone an idea of who these people are without being excessively limiting.
Not-so-allowable:
Communications Officer/Male Original Character: both of these are too vague. We’re not sure whether this person wants a male, female, nonbinary, or other gender for the Communication’s Officer; Male Original Character is so nebulously defined that we’re not sure just who that might be.
Female Shepard/Batarian(s) - We don’t know who these batarians are, or how many of them there are. “Five Male Batarian Pilots” tells us a lot more.
Male Shepard/Legion/Ebony Raven Darkmayne (My OC) - While we encourage you to add details about your Shepards or other OCs, it’s very hard to write for original characters someone else has formed. Please nominate your OC in more generic terms (ex Male Shepard/Legion/Female Original Goffic Hogwarts Student). You can add in names and descriptions in optional details in your sign up, but this way the writer or artist has more wiggle room for what will suit their fic or art, and you have more options of matching more people since you aren’t limited to one interpretation of a concept.
A good rule of thumb is if you can sum up an OC in five non-name nouns, it’s probably a valid nomination.
Can I nominate crossovers?
Yes! Crossovers between different Mass Effect properties are welcome and and are crossovers between ! Just please, if the character you’re crossing over doesn’t hail from a Mass Effect canon, add in the canon next to the character name, eg “Darth Vader (Star Wars)/Garrus Vakarian.”

A Guide to Treats
A treat is a work composed for the Spectre Requisitions Collection outside of your assignment. A treat is extra, i.e. you are free but not obligated to create it on top of your assignment. This is possible in the following ways:
A fanwork for an un-requested pairing on the nominations list. Is there a pairing on there you just absolutely want to write something for and no one requested it? You can post it to the collection as a treat!
A fanwork that fills a request of one of the participants you weren’t assigned to. Maybe one of the requests on this list just grabs you and you can’t help yourself. We feel you. We really do.
If you create a fanwork for a participant of the Exchange, you are obligated to follow that person’s squicks/triggers and pairings. If your treat doesn’t have a particular recipient, it must still be tagged appropriately (i.e. warn for potentially triggering content, rating).
A treat does not have a minimum word count requirement; it doesn’t need to have over a 1000 words like your Assignment Fic does. A treat may also be a manip on its own, unlike an Assignment Artwork.
You do not have to be signed up to post a fanwork to the collection! All you need is an AO3 account; if you don’t have one, you may message the mods and we will get you an invitation. The collection is open to treats from now up to March 28th. It will be inaccessible to anyone but the creator and the mods until reveals.
How to post your treat:
1) Log into AO3 and go to Post->New Work. Fill in your actual document, titles, warnings, etc. like normal.
2) Under Post to Collections/Challenges, type in the following groups:
- SpecRecs2021
3) Under Gift this work, type in your recipient’s name. If it’s a treat, type in the person whose prompt you used for your fanwork if you used one; otherwise, you can leave this form blank to just make a general gift to the community. If you’ve done it right, it should look like this:
4) Scroll to the bottom, post your work! Voila, you are done!
After that, the mods will take a look at your fic; if we have any follow up questions, we’ll email you at the address listed on your Ao3 account.

Spectre Requisitions 2021 - Fic Recs - NSFW Edition
Here’s a list of NSFW fics so far that I’ve read and loved from the SpecRec2021 that were just amazing reads. I’ve truly enjoyed everything, and I can’t recommend enough just going to the full works collection if you have the time and losing yourself there.
