I want this!
East of East: The Making of Greater El Monte is an edited collection of thirty-one essays that trace the experience of a California community over three centuries, from eighteenth-century Spanish colonization to twenty-first century globalization. Employing traditional historical scholarship, oral history, creative nonfiction and original art, the book provides a radical new history of El Monte and South El Monte, showing how interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship can break new ground in public history.

I’ve been going to Baguette City for years and was surprised that they closed. However, it turns out that it’s still the same business only they changed names because they wanted to add dim sum. They also remodeled and added some new equipment. One piece of equipment looks like a refrigerator but actually keeps the dim sum hot.
They still have banh mi sandwiches (made to order, starting at $5.50), but they added baked and steamed buns/bao, har gow, shu mai, chicken feet, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, and steamed pork ribs. They also have some Vietnamese ready to eat food on the counter. Oh and a few vegetarian items and drinks. The sandwiches are buy 5, get 1 free. They bake their own baguettes and make their own dim sum.
Combination bun/ dai bao ($2): Smaller than usual but the dough was surprisingly thin, surprisingly stuffed full with a piece of sausage, a tiny quail egg, pieces of shrimp, chicken, pork water chestnut. The sausage was a little salty and I like black pepper in my dai bao but still, it’s a pretty good deal with good flavor
Sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf ($5): They say it comes with pork, chicken, shrimp and egg but I could only see ground meat. The sticky rice part was fine but the flavor was lacking.
Baguette ($1.75): A big baguette, pale looking. The exterior is thin and crisp and the interior soft and chewy. It’s lighter and softer than your French baguette. Toasted, it works well for banh mi sandwiches.
Takeout only (there’s no seating). Service was friendly. They even gave me a free iced tea (free with the purchase of dim sum, I believe). It’s in a strip mall with its own parking.

KO-FI 🕯️ || HALLOWEEN SPECIAL 🎃

"we tried to exorcise the monte, but the demon was too strong"
you listened intently as your abuelo told the story, all of the primos and primas sitting around of him, you included.
"so one day, after dark, while i was out on the cerro, he appeared"
"and zas! my machete fell down and grazed his left eye!" he finished the story leaving the youth in awe. "he retreated, and he still haunts the cerro, that's why the curfew exists, to make sure none of you come across the demonio del cerro."
"ay papá, stop scaring them, mojarán la cama si lo haces" your mamá said
all of the primos and primas went to sleep, but mariana and you were speaking, the two, being the oldest of the children, could drink and stay up late. you were currently playing a friendly game of truth of dare.
"i dare you to go to el cerro" she began "at 3 am" she took a sip of her drink "enter the cave in which the demon resides and then come back at 6 am"
"you serious? no me jodas" you scoffed "how childish"
"if you do it i'll do your house chores, for a month!" now that caught your attention, you thought for a moment, thinking intently if the trade was fair.
"...and you'll help me with the kids instead of going out"
"deal." just like that, with a friendly handshake, you signed your fate.
Tumblr media
the way up was a breeze, it was just walking from the house to the crops, and then it was a way up. you opened the small gate that marked the ending of your family territory.
your hand felt a jolt when it made contact with it, but you continued anyway, the small gate closing as you stepped away from the house and crops.
what you didn't know is that someone was watching.
as you walked, you saw how big it was, on the way some dogs began to follow you, they looked old and tattered, as if the hadn't had a good meal in years, their bones and skin showing years of people passing by scaring them and hitting them, it made your heart feel tighter.
"toma" you placed the ham your sister had given you to eat in the cave, the dog seemed untrusting, but he seemed to have smelt the ham as you left in in the ground, the skinny dog grabbed the ham and ran into the fog.
you continued walking, your feet starting to ache, you were just arriving to the cave, and your watch read 2:45 am.
you hummed and continued walking, you had to take a picture of yourself in the cave, as proof to give to your sister, you felt watched as if someone's piercing eyes were penetrating your soul.
"ay!" you squealed when you tried to enter the cave and a swarm of bats flew off, you fell onto the floor with a thump, and dog's barks and hollers were heard. you huffed as you got up
"some bats" you cursed under your breath while turning on the flashlight you had brought with you, the cave was hollow, there was no one at all.
drip drip
each small sound that the cave maximized and echoed, each step made your skin shudder, and every small hair in your neck stand up.
"it's just a story to scare us" you huffed "just so we don't go to parties or go out late" you tried to calm yourself down, suddenly you felt a shiver climb down your spine.
"oh is it?"
you turned around quickly, your eyes widening while you stared into red ones. your mouth opened, trying to scream, but no sound came out. before you was a man- no, a demon, it was tall, almost two meters, he towered over you, his hair was dark, his skin was tan, and for canines.... fangs.
"what?" the demon cocked his eyebrow "cat got your tongue?"
"d-d-d-"
"d-d-d?" he mocked as he got closer, and you stepped back, trying to avoid him.
"¡demonio!" you shrieked and tried to run, to run away from the legend you just had met, what you didn't count was with you tripping over a rock
"ey ey" he tsked and walked towards your fallen form, while you tried to scurry away "who taught you to enter without invitation to someone's home and then leave without any apologies?" he grabbed your ankle and started to pull you into the cave.
"i'm sorry!" you shrieked trying to push his hands away, trying to get away from the monster, the demon of the mountain.
he was tall, broad, and had two big horns on top of his head, his eyes... they were crimson red, piercing into your soul, and onto the pits of hell. his teeth, weren't normal, and when you turned around to see him, you were greeted with two big canines, as if he was a wolf. and on his eyebrow. a scar rested there, just like your grandfather had said
"why are you running little lamb?"
"i just want to talk" and with one rough pull, he pulled you into the cave, where no one would see you again.
Tumblr media
"what do you want?" you sobbed as he strapped you to a rock "please i won't tell anyone" he snickered
"that's what your querido abuelo said"
"please i'll do anything!"
"anything mhm?" he mused as he stepped and stared at your trembling face "alright, i'll let you go." you sobbed and thanked him thousands of times in a breath.
"but"
you stopped sobbing and heaved...it wasn't gonna be easy

Haro, Spain (No. 5)
Haro, a city in La Rioja located on a hill in the basins of the Tirón and Ebro rivers, has medicinal waters. Its name is undoubtedly phonetic result (loss of /f/ in initial position) of the Latin faru, lighthouse, here in the sense of beacon, watchtower probably in the military technical sense.
The Ebro River and the Oja-Tirón River pass through the municipality. The Ebro enters from the north, coming from Miranda de Ebro, through the area of the Conchas de Haro, where it separates the Montes Obarenes from the Sierra de Cantabria. Continue to draw wide meanders, making the limit with Labastida and Briñas, and leaving from the south in the direction of Gimileo. The Oja-Tirón River enters from the west from Anguciana; in the Arrauri dam part of its waters are channeled (Arrauri channel) to lead them to the hydroelectric power station of San José, returning them back to the riverbed that ends up flowing into the Ebro near the neighborhood of the wineries in the so-called "mouth of the Ebro". By a donation of 1421 it is known that at that date the channel of Arrauri already existed, which was probably already used to move mills.
The abundance of water creates a landscape of groves and poplars, which provides irrigated land for horticultural crops. The soils of the area are formed mainly by limestones of the Upper Cretaceous. Its permeability forms aquifers recharged by the infiltration of rainfall.
The main population center is surrounded by three hills: Cerro de la Mota or El Castillo, also called Atalaya, Cerro de Santa Lucía, where the water tanks are located, taking advantage of the fact that it is above the rest of the city, and the Cerro de Santo Domingo. For centuries, the population has remained located between these hills, due to this natural strangulation, expanding in the late twentieth century through the existing plains in the direction of Gimileo.
The relief is mountainous to the north, where the Ebro is embedded in the Conchas de Haro, and predominantly flat in the center and in the south. The altitude ranges from 782 meters to the northwest, already in the Montes Obarenes, and 435 meters on the banks of the Ebro. The city rises to 479 meters above sea level.

Nha Hang Phuong Anh, 9442 E Garvey Ave South El Monte, CA 91733
Tumblr media
Found this mom & pop hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant in a Vietnamese area of South El Monte. They keep the front door locked during business hours, which is strange. The sticker on the door says 24 hour surveillance. It’s cash only and not in a great/safe neighborhood.
The menu only has a few items but even a few of these are marked as “NO” so I assume they are not available. Choose from appetizers (spring rolls, egg rolls), filet mignon cubes, Cornish hen, a few noodle soups (bun bo hue, bun rieu) and 1 vermicelli bowl. They also have housemade beverages like café sua da (Vietnamese coffee), pennywort drinks, and iced tea. Their broth is pork based.
Bun rieu ($10.50) – crab noodle soup. Not the traditional bun rieu in some respects but absolutely fresh, huge, and delicious. If you’re looking for any crab flavor, you’d be disappointed.– the light, clear pork broth sweetened with tomato was loaded with thin rice noodles, tomato wedges, BIG cubes of tender pork blood, tofu cubes, egg, a pig’s foot, and a few cubes of housemade pork loaf. They served a pile of fresh herbs, raw bean sprouts, a lime wedge, and a bit of fermented shrimp paste on the side. Now, if you’re looking for the typical bun rieu, Phuong Anh’s broth has less tomato flavor and the meatballs are missing, substituted with pork loaf. The meatballs normally have crab in them and Phuong Anh’s didn’t seem to have any. But it was so cheap and so good, so who cares?
Vietnamese coffee ($5) – iced coffee with condensed milk. Not as bitter and more flavorful than the typical Vietnamese coffee. The coffee had fruity notes.
The restaurant is small (just six four-top tables) and the décor is homey. Condiments and cutlery are kept at each table. They have a small shrine near the cash register. Parking is available behind the restaurant. Cash only.
