Here, as we are rushing along through the darkness, with the cold from the river seeming to rise up and strike us; with all the mysterious voices of the night around us, it all comes home. We seem to be drifting into unknown places and unknown ways; into a whole world of dark and dreadful things.

*grabs you by the shoulders* Listen... this is the journey to the Underworld, on a boat on the river Styx... it’s their katavasis.

They’re heading to Hell, the unknown underworld, except for Jonathan it’s a Hell he knows. Arthur is the one steering the boat like Charon the boatman. Because both Arthur and Jonathan are connected with Death.

Arthur is the first of the crew who has killed. To release Lucy’s soul, with violence and blood.

He’s returning Jonathan to the land of the dead, to reap a soul with his own scythe.
