Anime Spotlight #1: Sonic the Hedgehog OVA (1996)
Tumblr media
Acquired Stardust's spotlights expand into the realm of anime! Join Ash as she takes a look back at 1996's Sonic the Hedgehog OVA, a fitting first entry in our anime spotlight series, bridging the gap between video games and anime.
In many ways the story of Sonic the Hedgehog mirrors that of developer Sega's due to how indelibly linked the Blue Blur's meteoric rise into pop culture relevancy is to the company at large. Sonic the Hedgehog, much like Sega, went from the cool new contender rivaling Nintendo's dominance in the early 90s to an underdog by the turn of the century, to an example of just how harsh the shift from 2D to 3D games could be to video game developers that struggled to make the transition with as much acclaim as Nintendo had, back to a beloved alternative underdog in recent years that represented a very particular style and sound that you couldn't find just anywhere else.
It's easy to see why Sonic the Hedgehog had such an impact in its initial boom period (which lasted roughly 8 years, from 1991 to 1999) with the strength of the creatives involved and inspirations evoked. Brandishing a visual and auditory edge along with its gameplay and level design that many considered on par with Nintendo's Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog helped propelled Japanese video game developer Sega into unprecedented heights particularly in America. Hot on the heels of 1993's Sonic CD and 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (& Knuckles)released on the Sega CD platform, 1996 saw the release of a two-episode Sonic the Hedgehog original video animation in Japan (that's OVA for those unfamiliar with anime terms, meaning a popular release method that's a sort of direct-to-video release rather than airing on television or in movie theaters). It was also compiled into a single 53-minute video and dubbed by ADV Films when it arrived in America in 1999, coinciding with the release of Sonic Adventure.
Tumblr media
Immediately apparent is the retention of many of the elements that made Sonic so popular in this era. First you have the art style of Sonic CD, recreated faithfully by Studio Pierrot (also responsible for animating shonen anime classics Naruto, Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho), with the even higher animation quality than the animated sequences of the then-new video game afforded by the budget of OVA format. There's also the soundtrack composed by Mitsuhiro Tada sporting an incredible blend of synthesizer, drums, keys and horns that's still stunning to this day and tragically never released in any official capacity (though an early production reel of the soundtrack, including its clever and catchy main theme sung by Riyu Konaka, was leaked in 2020 thanks to a Russian Sonic fansite). There's also the story and cast, an unthinkable (in 1996) teamup between Sonic and friends with nemesis Dr. Eggman rounded out by a few original characters such as the charmingly feral brat Sara, notably being the first instance of oddly human (or at least in this case humanimal) love interests for Sonic.
Tumblr media
As previously mentioned, Sonic OVA nails a lot of things about the series that made it so popular at the time including the portrayal of its lead characters. Sonic has his cocky coolness, Tails lovable kid genius with plenty of vulnerability and Knuckles has both all the toughness and silliness one would expect. Aspects of all three of these characters would come to be either lost of hyperfocused on in the years to come and it's pretty great to have a piece of media capture the protagonist trio in such robust detail, with each character getting several moments to shine and their own significance in the events of the OVA as opposed to being ultimately completely beholden to Sonic to save the day.
Another retention from the video games of the time is the action and sense of speed with Studio Pierrot having done a wonderful job animating not only several sequences of traversal straight out of the Sega Genesis games complete with cameos of enemies along with several impressive fight sequences, as well as a few small instances of impressively thought out interaction between both characters and environment. In terms of the story and animation it's clear that the people involved in the project really understood the assignment and never phoned it in or lost sight of what they were doing.
Tumblr media
While a wonderful snapshot of the series at the time, Sonic OVA also features a few interesting elements that look to the future. Planet Freedom, the world in which the characters inhabit in this particular incarnation of the series, features a distinctly New York City in post-apocalypse locale that would later come up again in 1999's Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. Sonic OVA also positions Tails and Dr. Eggman as more direct rivals than previously seen, which would come to be a staple of the series starting again with 1999's Sonic Adventure. Sonic OVA is not entirely without its own quirks that would not be retained however, most notably referring to Knuckles as a mole and seemingly giving him the ability to outright fly as opposed to merely gliding.
Some may find the English cast to be annoying, but personally this is my favorite casting of the characters and the voices I always associate with them - they're teenage (and in the case of Tails, a child) cartoon animals after all. Regardless of which language you choose to watch in, Sonic OVA is a fantastic time and an interesting snapshot in time that effectively communicates why a lot people had so much fascination with Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog in its prime. It's also not everyday that this era of Sonic's music, largely featuring reworked compositions of Masato Nakamura's band Dreams Come True and later various songs by Michael Jackson (itself an interesting footnote of Sonic development lore), manages to feature tracks that stand up to the mainline games' quality, but Sonic OVA definitely includes a few songs that will stay with you and it's a shame that until recently the soundtrack has been almost completely ignored by Sega.
A gem hidden among the stones, Sonic the Hedgehog OVA is undoubtedly stardust.

All about Cameron! (Sonic OC)
1. Her full name is Cameron Marina Segana
2. No titles but a nickname, Cam. She actually got it due to her interest in photography (camera).
3. For the most part she had a happy childhood, living with her parents, uncle, and cousin. A good memory is when her parents took her to Windy Valley for the first time to fly kites there. A bad memory is when she accidentally fell in a frozen pond in Ice Cap, which explains her dislike of winter and ice
4. She has very fond memories of her parents, which drives her to find them. The worst memory she ever had was finding out they went missing
5. She doesn't have a sibling, but she considers her cousin Erin to be a big sister. Though they different interests they support each other
6. Like every kid in the Sonic universe she doesn't go to school
7. She was very shy growing up so she didn't make any friends.
8. She doesn't have pets in a traditional sense. She does take care of Chao and has one named Shelley. She doesn't hate animals but she's cautious around bigger animals
9. The Flickies are tricky because they think that she's like Eggman. So she has to work extra hard to gain their trust like feeding them more food or turning her home into a sanctuary after freeing them from Eggman's badniks.
10. For the most part Cam isn't interested in children, especially babies and toddlers. Older children are more easier to deal with. As a parent she would take her children on a trip around the world so they wouldn't be stuck like she had been during the years her parents were gone.
11. Cameron eats like any other kid her age. She doesn't have peanut or tree nut allergies but Erin does, so she takes the extra step by not having ANYTHING nut related in their pantry. She eat nut products outside the house and she checks to see if there's no nuts or peanut oil in any of the groceries
12. She loves pizza, especially pineapple and ham. She also eats onion rings. For healthy stuff she eats pineapples and edible bush berries
13. Her least favorite food is pickled vegetebles. This is actually my sneaky reference to Chris Chan, who has an infamous hatred towards pickles. Cam also doesn't like coffee
14. Cam remembers dining at Twinkle Park for her birthday
15. While she's not terrible at cooking, the most she can make is basic food like pizza and simple soups. Depending on what kind of food she makes, if someone else eats it they would say it's good or needs a lot of improvement
16. Cameron collects sea shells. She also collects photographs of the zones she visits and puts it all in a scrapbook. Every now and then she makes copies of these photos to sell, especially after she lands a job at a fanzine. At Casino Park she develops an obsession with rings, but later she tempers it when she gets too greedy.
17. Again, Cameron is a photojournalist so taking pictures is pretty much a given
18. She reads travel magazines but also the occasional Penny Dreadful, her favorite music is soul and new age/spa. She doesn't watch TV much but when she do she gravitates to traveling shows or historical fiction. For video games she plays puzzle and platforming games. Other than that she took up gambling instead
19. Her least favorite genre is romance
20. She's not particularly fond of musicals
21. Cam doesn't have much of a temper but that doesn't mean she is fragile. When she gets cross with someone she doesn't mince her words while still being polite
22. She doesn't insult people (that's Sonic's thing) but she does use these terms: Rotten Egg (Eggman), Emo the Hedgehog (Shadow in SA2), Little Miss Arrogant (Darcelle). She tells them directly to their faces all throughout SA2 because they're on opposing side. Other than that no.
23. Cam has very good memory and can recall things with ease. I consider it impressive compared to the abundance of Super Forms, Chaos Control, and superpowers of the Sonic world.
24. Her sleep pattern is weird. She can stay up really late in the hours if she's feeling adventurous, but other times she sleeps all the way up to 3pm in the afternoon due to long hours at the diner she works at
25. Cameron finds a lot of things funny, whether it be random or ironically intentional. She has a good, if sardonic sense of humor. She relishes in seeing Eggman's plans blow up in his face. She also finds Amy's crush on Sonic pretty amusing if not adorable; this lessens once Cam and Sonic start dating (yes I have Sonic+OC ship get over it) when Amy becomes too much and she has to set her straight.

Note
You do really well with making Sonic enjoyable to read. You let him have flaws, you're not afraid to express those flaws, and you do your best with diversifying the amount of situations he is. This does well in allowing the readers to see different sides of him that, in turn, make him feel like a dynamic person. It's really nice to see.
beep beep how’s my portrayal ?

65. Special - Sonic Live!
Tumblr media
Previous / Table of Contents / Next
The Last Game Cartridge Hero
Writer/Pencils: Ken Penders Colors: Karl Bollers
*deep breath* …oh boy.
So this issue is kind of infamous for being, well, terrible. At least, this first story is. Even I, usually being willing to put up with a lot of crap from Penders, think this story is just a royal mess. You'll see what I mean in a second.
Anyway, the customary intro page of this issue makes some kind of allusion to Sonic being about to enter some strange other zone that's unlike anything he's ever experienced before. Indeed, the beginning shows Sonic rushing to try to rescue Sally, who's been captured by Robotnik, only to be blasted by energy bolts from behind - which, as we all know from when this exact thing happened to Robotnik in StH#21, just means he'll be catapulted into another reality instead of killed. Which reality is that, you ask?
Ha. Haaaaaa.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah. That's right, folks. It's one of these. Kenders actually recruited both his real life son and niece to be photographed and placed into the story of the Sonic comics as actual characters. Luckily this only lasts for this one issue, and they weren't made recurring characters or something, but like, damn. These children are grown-ass adults right now. I wonder what they think of this? What they think of their father/uncle respectively? If they cringe looking back at this, or look back on fondly as a cool thing they got to experience as kids? Side note as well, as I've mentioned before Ken had never played a Sonic game while he worked on the comics, nor did he own a Sega console. That's why, when Steve "dies" in the game the screen simply appears to turn off, and, if you look closely, he's not holding a game controller, but rather holding a regular TV remote sideways. Oh, Ken. Why this? Why?
Well, anyway, Sonic finds himself floating in a strange void seemingly unable to move or see anything, until the faces of these kids start looming in his face and talk about seeing him in the TV as they try to turn on their game. Sonic, worried they're going to try to turn off the TV and I guess strand him in there for longer, somehow reaches out and pulls them in instead.
Tumblr media
Great going, Sonic! Now these two kids who have no superpowers of their own are stuck in a dangerous war zone with you. Indeed, this goes as well as you might expect. He and the two kids are able to breach back into Sonic's home zone, where Robotnik has captured the rest of the Freedom Fighters and is planning to launch missiles into space to create… some kind of doomsday device? It's not really explained well beyond "killer satellites," but either way, Sonic doesn't like the idea of this, and so he starts beating up the swatbots in his way. This stops briefly when Robotnik decides to take his villainy to the next level and threaten to shoot the two random innocent kids just because they happen to be with Sonic.
Tumblr media
Of course, the swatbots aren't as fast as Sonic, which begs the question of how they even managed to blast him at the beginning of this story in the first place, and he beats the rest of them up and escapes with the kids. He takes them to the control center to shut down the missile launch, which has begun its countdown due to Sonic accidentally knocking Robotnik down onto his launch remote. Great job, buddy!
Tumblr media
They manage to shut down the missiles, but just as they do, Robotnik, Snively, Sonic, and the two kids are all pulled into a strange beam of light. Once Sonic and the kids get their bearings, Robotnik begins gloating, since apparently, during the split second between when he entered and when Sonic entered, he contacted a bunch of alternate universe copies of himself and got them to build him a big mech suit shaped like himself. Apparently, they're in yet another strange zone, and Robotnik realizes he can conquer the whole multiverse from here, not just his own version of Mobius. At least… I think that's what he's implying. Honestly, it's so unclear and all the dialogue so scattered, it's hard to even properly tell. Anyway, Robotnik throws Sonic and the kids in a prison cell with several other… humans?
Tumblr media
While Robotnik suddenly finds himself threatened by the other versions of himself, not content to be used for slave labor, Sonic has a chat with these people. Apparently, this isn't just any old zone - it's the kids' home zone, AKA, Earth! Now, this definitely isn't our Earth. These guys claim to be the designers of the Sonic games, but for one, they're decidedly not Japanese, and two, there's no mention of Sega at all. Apparently, the concept art for Sonic the Hedgehog in this world was created when they received strange interdimensional transmissions showing images of him, and they decided to make a game out of it. Not only that, but now these video game designers slash scientists have apparently created a weird prototype device that was responsible for sucking Sonic and co. into this world through a strange dimensional link. Yyyyyeah. Go ahead and try to make any sense out of this crap.
Well, anyway, Sonic and the kids notice Robotnik and Snively about to be vaporized by the angry other-Robotniks, and decide to step in and save them from certain death, or maybe just another instance of zone-hopping. Come on Sonic, this is what, the third or fourth time you had an opportunity to let this guy die and have all your problems be solved? How many other people have died in this war because you refuse to let Robotnik be killed by his own hubris? Of course, the swatbots and other Robotniks don’t like this, and so to save themselves, Sonic and the kids need to shut down the prototype linking them to this world. Turns out the way they do this… is through Sonic game cheat codes!
Tumblr media
The code recited by little Steve here is actually a real code, something I'm mildly surprised about given Ken's weird disdain for the Sonic video games. It's the level select code for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on Genesis (non-Japanese version). If you've got a Genesis and a copy of the first game, try it yourself and see. In this world, however, it's apparently the shutdown code for the swatbots, and thus everyone is saved. The game designer scientist guys use the prototype's dimensional link to send Sonic, Robotnik and Snively back to their own zone, and Sonic has a happy reunion with his friends, who have been mysteriously freed from captivity in the meantime.
Tumblr media
Oh, boy. Someone needs to tell Kenders that the Sonic games don't actually depict Sonic from the comics. These kids aren't gonna have any idea what the Sonic they were traveling with is up to, because all they'll be doing is playing as a different, more turquoise-colored Sonic, battling some weird dude called "Eggman" and collecting seven multicolored Chaos Emeralds to save a planet that definitely isn't called Mobius. Shame.
The Substitute Freedom Fighters
Writer: Rich Koslowski Pencils: Art Mawhinney Colors: Karl Bollers
So you may be wondering. How exactly did the Freedom Fighters even get captured in the first place, and how did they escape while Sonic and the others were stuck in the "real world"? This story is here to answer our questions! Apparently, while Sonic is just off derping around somewhere else, the others are watching Rotor create a new micro-cam that he can attach to his bandolier, working kind of like a body cam so they can review footage of battles after the fact and learn from them. Fortunately for them, some swatbots immediately show up to let them test out their new invention. Unfortunately for them, they get overwhelmed and dragged back to Robotnik.
Tumblr media
Hey, look who it is! Larry Lynx has made his comeback, and he's noticed everyone's disappearance… as well as the ongoing live feed from Rotor's micro-cam. Realizing everyone is in danger, he rallies the first people he sees training - Cyril Eagle, and Sally's old recruits. They team up and fight their way into Robotropolis, Larry using his famous bad luck to make sure the swatbots lose every time, and they're able to eventually find the captured Freedom Fighters and liberate them. After finding Sonic as well, they head back to Knothole, where Sally forms the six of them into a new team, the Substitute Legion of Freedom Fighters, as a backup squad that can continue the fight against Robotnik if the Freedom Fighters are unable to.
Tumblr media
This is cute, but it does bring up an interesting point. Clearly, the Freedom Fighters are not always able to win their battles, and it's dire enough that Sally's started forming backup teams. It's not said directly that it's in case the main team dies or is roboticized or something, but we know that's a very real possibility in this war. Makes you wonder how this war was even fought when they were all tiny kids, and if something like this has ever happened before…
Knuckles Quest 2
Writer: Kent Taylor Pencils/Colors: Pat Spaziante
Well, no need to worry about that. Knuckles is at it again! This time, he's found his way to a strange cottage in the forest, and is set upon by a bunch of vicious mythical creatures, most of which he names off and mentions hearing in fairy tales. It's interesting, because as far as I'm aware, none of these are real-life mythical creatures, which means we're getting a tiny bit of lore and worldbuilding regarding the kinds of mythical creatures Mobian children are told about in this world.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Knuckles is totally confused about why he's fighting all these creatures that are supposed to not even exist, but eventually reasons that they indeed can't be real, and are magical projections. Once he announces this, they dissipate and he finds himself talking to an old fox wizard, who directs him to continue his search elsewhere. He then reveals that he used to serve the king in his youth, and that his name is…
Tumblr media
…Merlin Prower? Any Sonic fan worth their salt knows that Tails' real name is Miles Prower and that "Tails" is just a nickname, indicating that this strange wizard may be somehow related to Tails. Hmm, wonder if we'll ever hear any more of him…?

Great Adaptation Expectations - Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage
Tumblr media
Some things just demand to be adapted into video games, and Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy manga series Berserk stands pretty much atop that list. Released in 1999 and developed by Yuke’s in cooperation with Miura, Sword of the Berserk: Guts’ Rage is a third-person action game for the Sega Dreamcast that attempted to scratch that initial gamification itch, and ride the success following the first anime adaptation of the series, which premiered two years prior.
Before discussing the details, it’s important to note that Sword of the Berserk suffers the same fate that so many licensed games do. It isn’t very good. Some of that comes down to the era in which it was made. There are a few frustrations that plague it that are typical of an era in which 3D action games were relatively new. That isn’t to say there aren’t things to enjoy about the game. If nothing else, it did help solidify why the approach to how action games played needed to be adjusted. Unfortunately, that means Sword of the Berserk itself, is something of a missed opportunity. On the plus side, it’s not a very long game, so its shortcomings don’t have enough time to grossly overstay their welcome, and any suffering along the way is mercifully brief.
The first obvious issue is the lack of camera control. Going back to play any 3rd person action game without a controllable camera can feel extremely limiting. It’s become such a staple that it feels more unnatural not to have it than it probably did to have it when it was first introduced. Of course, there are certainly examples of very good games that lack it. You can’t control the camera in Onimusha or Devil May Cry, but you don’t tend to notice that limitation as much since the camera is placed in thought ways that reveal the relevant visual information to the player.
Sword of the Berserk’s camera lacks that thoughtfulness. It tries to be dynamic, moving along with your character, but the concern seems to be more on framing Guts in a particular way rather than assisting the player. Given that this is an adaptation of a beautifully drawn manga series, it’s hard to fault the developers for trying to capture some of that magic in their game (which they largely accomplish in the cutscenes), however, it ends up compromising its playability to a fairly extreme degree at times.
You also have the issue of moving toward the camera a lot, meaning you’ll often find yourself running headfirst into danger you can’t see until it’s too late. There’s even an escape sequence near the end of the game reminiscent of Sonic Adventure 2’s opening sequence. You have to run around and jump over obstacles with little warning before you’re right up against them. Without rings to help you cling to life, this is extremely frustrating. One mistake means you die, and in a game with limited checkpoints and continues, it can quickly become the hardest and most frustrating part of the entire experience.
Tumblr media
Rollin' around at the speed of sound/Got places to go, gotta follow my rainbow/Can't stick around, have to keep movin' on/Guess what lies ahead, only one way to find out!
Another part of what makes the camera so difficult is that it doesn’t have a lot of room to maneuver, even if the developers might have wanted to. You spend most of your time inside a castle, fighting through narrow corridors and cramped courtyards. In those confined spaces, the camera can’t really move wherever it wants because chances are, level geometry would get in the way. There are few examples of where this does actually happen, such as when you travel below the castle’s cemetery, and an obelisk sitting in the middle of the room complete obscures any figures that move behind it.
Aside from restricting the camera, the level design has the consequence of hampering what the game’s mechanics are centered around entirely, the combat. The whole point of a Berserk game is to play as Guts and swing the laughably huge Dragon Slayer sword around. There are several levels in this game where that is literally impossible. One level in particular, where you run through the castle town has several passageways where you’ll clank your sword against stone trying to land a hit on guards that hinder your progress. The developers seemed to realize this would be a problem, so they put in the option to sheath the Dragon Slayer and fight with your fists. I can say that this is not the most adequate solution. Even playing on the easy difficulty, punching guards out is a dubious proposition. Your damage output is drastically reduced and since the guards can snipe you with arrows from some distance with crossbows, you may well die before even getting the chance.
Tumblr media
Let me just, uh, erm, hmm.
On some level, you have to respect the commitment to realism, as you obviously could not swing a sword the size of the Dragon Slayer in most places that human being typically occupy. However, the ability to swing said hunk of iron in the first place is fantastical, and thus, I think it would have been more than a fair compromise to let the sword simply clip through level geometry in an effort to make the combat more fluid and satisfying. Thankfully, the boss fights, which are the main draw of the game’s combat, are usually placed in much more open areas to avoid this issue.
Ultimately, I get the feeling that the game’s design took something of a back seat to the story that Kentaro Miura wanted to tell, and as such, there’s relatively little actual game to be played at all. Of the roughly four hours it takes to get through, most of that time is spent in cutscenes, making Sword of the Berserk more of an animated film than a game. Honestly, this does not really bother me. If you got the game because you were already a fan of Berserk, then what you’re getting is Berserk. What’s especially great about it is that the story told is unique to the game. It’s a side-quest, as it were, to the Millennium Falcon arc, where Guts has decided to keep the traumatized Casca close to him as he continues his quest to defeat Griffith. In this side story, Guts meets some traveling performers and decides to go watch their performance in a nearby town. He ends up walking into the middle of a conflict between the regions lord and people afflicted with a curse, called the Mandragora.
What’s more, is that the story is told quite well. For its time, the Dreamcast was a very capable platform for 3D graphics. Even twenty years later, the cutscenes are enjoyable to watch on their own if you’re willing to overlook a few flaws. Sure, the characters models are a bit blocky and they move a bit like action figures, but robotic movement is a problem that still plagues 3D animation if the 2016 Berserk or 2019 Ultraman anime is anything to go by. There’s still incredible attention to detail. The faces, in particular, have a lot of expression to them and help bring moments to life in a way that seems hard to believe at times.
Tumblr media
You can really see the despair on his face.
It helps, too, that the voice acting is of very high quality. With well-known talents like Cam Clarke and Earl Boen, there was a clear emphasis on treating the game’s story seriously. This is extremely important since the story makes up pretty much the whole reason you’d be playing this game in the first place. There are some issues with the localization here and there (the name Guts is treated as a nickname rather than a given name in a few scenes), but the line delivery and interaction between characters really sell the scenes, even if the lines themselves are a bit clunky or cliched. When you compare the cutscenes in Sword of the Berserk to those in say, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, released just a year earlier, you can’t help but appreciate the skill in direction and experience of the actors when stellar voice-acting in games was not a given.
You could argue that this story could have been served better through manga or traditional animation, but it’s hard to fault Yuke’s for wanting to make a Berserk game, or Miura for wanting to branch out and test the waters on new methods of conveying his story. Berserk’s popularity in Japan meant that a game based on the series was going to be made at some point, and creating a self-contained side story that can be begun and ended within that game makes perfect sense. It also helps make the game approachable by those who aren’t familiar with the series at all. In 1999, Berserk certainly wasn’t considered such a pinnacle of dark fantasy in the West as it is today, so someone picking the game off the shelf in the US would very likely have no frame of reference for the story at all. Thanks to the introduction of new characters like Rita, the player can learn what they need to know through the lens of those characters, making the reliance on that prior knowledge a lot less necessary.
Now that Berserk’s influence has become so far reaching, it seems unlikely that anyone would come to the Dreamcast game without some working knowledge of the series. While it’s hard to consider it a can’t miss part of the Berserk experience (save for the wonderful musical contributions of Susumu Hirasawa), there’s enough there for anyone willing to put up with some clunky design. At the very least, it’s worth watching a playthrough online for the story alone if the act of playing the game itself doesn’t manage to replicate the feeling of becoming the Black Swordsman himself.

Last week in tech: A MacBook Pro recall, the new Kindle, and Facebook’s cryptocurrency
New Post has been published on https://nexcraft.co/last-week-in-tech-a-macbook-pro-recall-the-new-kindle-and-facebooks-cryptocurrency/
Last week in tech: A MacBook Pro recall, the new Kindle, and Facebook’s cryptocurrency
Do you prefer yellow or blue light on your Kindle? This one has both. (Amazon/)
The mid-2000s were the golden age for the MacBook Pro. You got a ton of port options—including an HDMI—and the keyboard didn’t die a horrible death just because you let a single Frito crumb slip beneath the keys. Unfortunately, those old machines aren’t always totally perfect. This week, Apple announced a recall of MacBook Pros sold between 2015 and 2017, citing an issue in which the battery might overheat and catch fire. You can check your serial number at this link and see if you qualify for a free battery replacement.
I checked my computer’s serial number and realized my 2014 MacBook Pro is now five years old, which seems ancient in the upgrade-everything-every-year era in which we live. I’m going to spend the weekend making memories with my elderly laptop, but you should spend your time here, catching up on the biggest tech stories from the week.
Listen to the latest episode of the Techathlon Podcast
Do you know the name of the secret project to develop the iPhone? You will once you listen to this week’s episode. Listen to us as we take a look back at reviews for now-classic video games, drink some truly horrible energy drinks, and test your knowledge of the week’s biggest tech headlines.
Listen in the player embedded above, subscribe on iTunes, add us on Stitcher, joins us on Anchor, or check us out on Spotify. You can also follow us on Twitter to talk trash and ruin our weekends with your sick burns.
Facebook’s cryptocurrency is coming in 2020
Facebook wants to be a much bigger part of your financial life. In 2020, the company plans to launch a cryptocurrency called Libra that you’ll be able to send to friends and businesses through platforms like Messenger and WhatsApp. Some heavy-hitting financial institutions including major credit card companies and PayPal are already onboard, so it looks like these Facebook bucks could get some real traction. I can’t wait to accidentally send my friends my life’s savings by pushing the Libra button in Messenger as I do with the video call button all the time.
Buying a used connected cam is a very bad idea
The secondary market is great for buying some things. You might find a vintage item that’s out of production, or you could get a screaming deal on a PS4 that an angry parent is selling to punish their kid for a bad report card (especially here in June). Buying a used security camera, however, is probably a bad call. This week, some users discovered they could still log into and see images from the Nest cams they had sold and de-registered from their accounts. The issue came from a bug in the Works With Nest platform that lets third-party devices work more closely within the Nest smart home ecosystem. Google says the issue is fixed now.
The internet got mad at an instructional video for light bulbs
Smart light bulbs—like any gadget—aren’t perfect. Sometimes you need to reset them and the app doesn’t do what you want it to do. That’s where the hardware reset comes in. Some devices have a button to accomplish such a task, but light bulbs typically require you to turn the switch on and off in a very specific sequence. This week, the internet found a Youtube video explaining this process for GE light bulbs and Twitter was off to the joke races. Is the process long? Yes. Did everyone overreact to a totally normal procedure that no one would get mad about if it were printed in an instruction manual instead of demonstrated in a YouTube video? Also yes.
Microsoft teamed up with Kano for a build-your-own Windows 10 PC kit
The Kano PC is a usable computer once you build it. (Kano/)
BYO computer kits have been around the STEM toy world for years, but Kano’s latest gadget is different. Instead of imposing its own proprietary operating system on the self-assembled machine, the Kano PC kit offers Microsoft’s Windows 10. This version of the OS only runs apps through Windows App Store—so you can’t go installing whatever you want—but it does open up the 11.6-inch touchscreen computer to common applications such as Office and Minecraft.
The new Kindle Oasis changes color
Blue light is either totally destroying your eyes or completely fine, depending on who you ask. But, if you’d prefer a Kindle that lets you choose between the familiar blue LED glow or the warmer hue of a tungsten light bulb, Amazon’s new Oasis e-reader is your ticket. This is the high-end Kindle, so options start at $249, but it’s waterproof and has a 7-inch display with 300 pixels per inch to make that novelization of Encino Man look extra crisp.
Simone Giertz made her Tesla Model 3 into a pickup truck
We’re still waiting for Elon Musk to officially announce the Tesla pickup truck, but robotics expert and all-around awesome person Simone Giertz didn’t want to wait. She took her tools to a Model 3 sedan and made the Truckla. Technically, it’s not so much a truck as it is a ute, which is what they call cars with truck beds in Australia and New Zealand. Still, it’s awesome and we want one.
The retro Sega Genesis is coming in September for $80
If the space below your TV is getting crowded with tiny, reissued video game consoles, you’ll have to make room for one more later this year. The Sega Genesis Mini comes with 42 games built-in, including some heavies like Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, and Earthworm Jim.

Ken Penders just gave me more ammo for SonCam. I'll write it as a romantic couple just to spite him.
For those who are probably aware, I am a selfshipping and OC/Canon blogger that loves world building, expanding characters and lore, and slow burn romances. One pairing in particular is between one of my Sonic OCs Cam and Blue Boi himself. I wasn't going to make it a romance, but darn it now I'm going to as a middle finger to Ken and his piss-poor writing.
So after hearing what Ken said on Twitter about Sonic - a fifteen year old - not having a love interest, I decided to canonize SonCam out of pure spite. I know Ken is butthurt over IDW Sonic's popularity, but he's even more butthurt that Sonic is not in the direction he wanted it to take. He's angry over being outed over his stance on Sally/Geoffrey. He's angry that Sonic didn't have his ideal concept for a girlfriend. Based on his poor writing, hypothetical Penders' girlfriend would have been a submissive, damsel in distress type with false agency and lack of any actual character beyond being arm candy for the men.
Update: in the case Sega does give Sonic a love interest (which is never), it would never cross any adult lines maybe beyond a few innocent hugs. Ken thinks a fifteen year old's love life is going to be riddled with sex. Not every teen romance is sexual or needs to be, but given what he said about Sally and Geoffrey - complete with victim blaming and trying to pull the "Christians are Bad/Evil" card - I wouldn't put pass him being miffed over the fact that the franchise isn't like Riverdale or Teen Mom. Or porn.

Backstory
Originally from an idea I had for a Sonic X reboot, Cameron is a 15-year-old human girl who lives in a secluded cottage with her older cousin Erin. In SA1, she discovers Tails after his crash and nursed him back to health before returning him to Sonic. Because of the badniks invading her home she decides to join up with them to stop Eggman from taking over the city. Along the way she discovers a knack for archery and some clues pointing to the whereabouts of her parents and uncle, who went missing during an expedition to Soleanna a few years back.
Personality
- Shy at first
- Introverted
- Learns to let loose
- Blunt when it comes to her opinions
- Sometimes expresses low confidence at times
- Mellow and soft-spoken
- Plucky
- Claustrophobic
- Bit of a neat freak because she doesn't like to attract bugs
- Expresses a thirst for adventure
- Can be pretty steely when angered
Hobbies and Interests
- Photography
- Swimming
- Surfing
- Collecting seashells
- Pizza
- Root beer
- Onion rings
- Scrapbooking
- Skating
- Works part time at a diner
- Playing her flute and drums
- Archery (she feels like a badass and likes to collect arrows)
- Traveling
- Skinny dipping on a hot Summer's evening or for privacy (her most shameful secret!)
- The colors green and blue
- Lemonade
Pet Peeves and Least Favorite Things
- Pickles
- Badniks invading her island
- Humidity
- Cold temps and snow
- Being underestimated because she doesn't have powers
- Gross things like bugs and slime
- Overly bright colors like neon orange and green (they hurt her eyes)
- Stubbing her toe
- People telling her that her parents and uncle won't come back
- Losing hope
- Closed up spaces
- Her camera malfunctioning
- Spoiled entitled behavior
Powers and Abilities
- Bow and arrow are her main weapons
- Hand to hand combat
- Athleticism
- Power Ups
- Hold her breath for extended periods of time (helping when in water levels; still need air bubbles)
- She can even weaponize her camera by turning the flash up bright to blind enemies
- Not the fastest nor strongest but has a healthy balance to keep up
- Learns to use Extreme Gear
Misc
- Cameron's surname is a reference to SEGA
- Her official ethnicity is African American but for the sake of my sanity her race will not be brought up constantly because I'm not here to earn social justice brownie points
- Cameron wears blue, green and oranges because I noticed how Sonic females tend to wear pink, purple and red and wanted her style to fit the games since there's not a female character yet who's associated with other colors besides those three
- A lot of people think that Cam and Erin aren't related because they look very different (Erin is a light-skinned redhead), which sometimes annoys her
- Out of the characters Cam has the most costume changes as she wears bathing suits, coats and winter gear, and other outfits depending on zone; she even begins carrying a bag to hold her outfits in
- She has a more mellow, humble personality to make her stand out from the other hammy, prideful and vibrant characters
- Cam documents her adventures through scrapbooking
- Her ultimate goal in the series is to find out what really happened to her family. This will eventually be resolved in Sonic 06 (spoilers: there's a happy ending)
- Also, Cameron and Sonic will be a couple but as always for my canon/OC ships, it's going to be a slow burn. Also I might tag as trigger warning for interspecies since some people still haven't got over SonElise.
- In SA1, Cameron received arrows with powers based on the stage. So for example, in Ice Cap she gets ice arrows, in Red Mountain fire arrows, Windy Valley has wind and leaves arrows, and Emerald Coast has her default arrows
- She doesn't have an ability type because I think it's outdated by now and limits potential
- I based her color scheme on the concept of Chromatic Arrangement. Sonic = blue, Tails = yellow, Knuckles = red, so it would make sense for another major character to be green (I don't count Jet and Vector). In SA Amy and Big round it out as "pink" and "purple."
- I guess Cam could technically count as a superhero even though she doesn't have the credentials of one (i.e costume, secret identity, edgy 90s redesign and bad Rob Liefield art)
- I based her SA/default costume from the styles that were popular in the late 90s and early 2000s since that's the era when the games came out
- Cam and Erin splits the bills, which is why they both have jobs since their parents aren't around. They end up getting rewarded money (SA2 by the president) which they then save up to go to Soleanna
- Cameron doesn't really consider Team Dark to be her friends, but she doesn't see them as enemies either
- She doesn't hate Amy either; she's more amused by Amy's worship for Sonic but does try to help her temper the obsession when it gets too much
- Cam eventually starts to see Tails and Knuckles as the brothers she never had, so she's protective of them; although her first impression of Knuckles was "Does he and Sonic fight every time they see each other?"
- I was inspired by Saphira24667's OC Saphira to make Cam and Sonic a couple because while I don't hate pairings like Sonally and Shadamy, I just want to do my own thing. Besides people will still find fault with it because it's canon/OC, so it's not like I have much to lose. No, I do not support beastiality but Sonic is at least sapient enough and people get away with Shadow/Maria.
- Originally my OC was going to be a Caucasian girl with long, wavy orange hair and a more "yoga instructor" design. Her names were also going to be Verna, Jade, Kelly, Celadon or Esmeralda, and her last name was going to be Greene. However I felt that having her be named after a shade of green and have a last name that literally is GREEN would be too much overkill so I changed her name and design. I also added more colors like blue and coral to give her a tropical aesthetic.
- Her theme in the SA games is Lauryn Hill's song "That Thing" which thankfully came out before SA was released in Japan (I tend to go extremely meta with my characters)
- One very old idea I had for her was for her to be a poodle with water powers to contrast her with Blaze; she's still associated with water though she doesn't have any powers
- Another old idea was for her to be a porcupine named Penny who had the power to control metal. The metal powers got carried over to my Shinkenger OC Ayane.
- I intended for Cam to be the total opposite of Chris Thorndyke as she actually has relatable problems, a character arc, and a likable and sympathetic personality.
- Cam weighs 121 pounds, so she has a canon weight compared to female Sonic characters
- In Sonic 06 Cam and Sonic becomes an official item (Amy will still be treated with dignity and respect as I hate ship wars)
- I have yet decided on what kind of power ups to give her
