Daily Goat #054: Song for Dana Plato - Songs for Peter Hughes
The three month ride sticks in your mind As though the insides of your head were a big screen And coming in on the evening wind It's the unmistakable scent of Brilliantine What kind of memory serves, what kind of world is it that Comes headlong at you and then swerves at the last possible second It's this one Yeah, it's this one
And it's easy to slow down And it's easy to slow down And it's easy just to lie out by the blue pools In the squinting sun and slow down And it's easy to slow down
And in situations like these It's sometimes useful to think of life as one long continuous evening That never turns into night Hey hey

The next episode of "Dark Side of the 2000's" will be about Howard Stern vs. Opie and Anthony, but why are they going to have an episode about that?
I know shock jocks were still a thing in the 2000's, but Howard was at the height of his popularity in the 90's.
"Dark Side of the 90's" should have an episode about Howard Stern and the sketchy things he's done (Dana Plato committing suicide a day after she appeared on his show, sexualizing the underage, how he was almost cancelled in the 1990's after he played gunshots after playing a Selena song).

The Mountain Goats - Song for Dana Plato
The three-month ride sticks in your mind as though the insides of your head were a big screen. And coming in on a evening wind, it's the unmistakable scent of brilliantine. What kind of memory serves? What kind of world is it that comes headlong at you then swerves at the last possible second? It's this one. It's this one.
And it's easy to slow down. And it's easy to slow down. And it's easy to just lie out by the blue pools in the squinting sun ans slow down. And it's easy to slow down.
And in situations like these, it's sometimes useful to think of life as one long continuous evening that never turns into night.
Hey, hey!

Quote
This is a song about an actress. I played it in Atlanta and I was surprised by a couple of things. One, that I could remember the chords. And two, to find that the memory of this actress... you know, sometimes you fixate on a popular culture figure for a while and it seems like that person is so infused with power or pathos or whatever that it gets very exciting and then twenty years later you think, you know, 'God, what was so exciting about Richard Gere? I can't really remember it now.' But this has not been the case with Dana Plato. The more I think about her, the sadder I get.
John Darnielle introducing Song for Dana Plato, Theatre of the Living Arts on 2009-11-28

"It is a song about a person who got lost. Pretty sure when I wrote it, it was before she got completely lost."

song for dana plato has a sort of spoken word section that really sticks out, its this
And in situations like these It's sometimes useful to think of life as one long continuous evening That never turns into night
ive thought abt it a lot over the years but i really dont know what he meant by it. evening as a time of rest, of play? the end always imminent but never actually hitting (this fits with life "coming headlong at you and then swerving at the last possible second"). he says its about a person who got lost, but when he wrote it she hadnt gotten completely lost. dana plato spent a long time pretty low, she spent some time in rehab, lost custody of her son, etc. she got fired from different strokes when she was 20, so she spent 15 years in the shadow of that. so maybe thats the idea, you know things have fallen apart and your life is a mess forever but you keep going, youre in one continous evening but itll never turn into night...idk. idk what to make of it. its very early goats, 1995. before her death
