More worldbuilding blabber, part 2! [prt 1 here]

Part 1 goes into detail about specific regions, but I want to take a moment to talk more about actual locations like towns and buildings or whatnot.

Roadkillerz base(s)- Ok so technically they have bases almost everywhere, but Id say their "main base" (or at least the base you'd see most often) is in Dustorm Valley (the desert place). Most likely because its the closes to the Wrath's base thats also in the desert, but also because very little people are in that area due to the excessive heat in the day and the freezing temperatures at night.

The base itself is underground with an extensive tunnel system, as well as multiple sources of energy (solar panels for the daytime, and generators for overnight operations). Most energy there is used for the A/C system (because desert) and security junk. Otherwise they limit stuff such as automatic doors or other unnecessary energy strains.

Wrath Base- as stated before, they're also in Duststorm Valley, only they dont try nearly as hard to hide the fact that they're there.

This base is much more tech heavy and has an army to protect their territory. Although that doesnt stop people from breaking in all the time somehow. The base has a few underground levels, yet the base is mostly above ground level.

I'll make more interior shots at some point, but just...imagine the most evil military-esq interior design. That helps.

Goldroot Town- The most stereotypical wild west/gold rush western town you can think of! These people took refuge in the desert in hopes of lowering their dependance on the government and distancing from the overabundance of invasive tech. Not to say their entirely anti-technology, but the people who live here yearn for the days where technology didnt take up so much of their daily lives to the point of survival. They value the warped history of the "wild west" and try to replicate that culture with very little modern modifications.

Alluvione City- Stepping away from the desert and closer to the ocean, theres the main city thats partially flooded, yet continues functionality anyway. I'll also make visuals for this eventually, but its meant to be based on Miami Florida and Venice Italy. The idea is that a lot of the shops and living areas are constantly surrounded by water, but its less romantic and culturally significant and more like the trashiest place you've been in. If you ever been in Miami you'll know exactly what I mean. Lots of neon lights and plenty of years worth of erosion eating away at the buildings, but nobody cares enough. They need money.

The Doo-Wop Diner- a 1950s diner that sits in the least flooded outskirts of the main Alluvione City area. The family diner is dedicated to that aesthetic and even features waitresses in poodle skirts skating plates of food both inside and outside of the restaurant. Marsha "Jitterbug" Robinson is the main waitress and has been working there since she was 18. Its also the diner Samuel Cottontail is a regular at.

Mayberry Township- Speaking of 50s styled places, this one is less fun. If you've been a regular here, you already know about the semi-hivemind cultural cult town that attempts to get everybody the same exact chance of the "american dream" ie married with the opposite sex with at least two children. The town is gated and people are instructed to stay as far away from it as possible, unless you work for the government.

Th is an entry to @frogcroaks' Pokémon Redesign contest. I picked Tropius.

While Tropius is based off a dinosaur and the banana tree, my redesign is based off the plantain and common lizards I find in my home country. The maroon leaves on the face are based off the bud of the plantain tree. The legs and claws are based off the trunk and roots. The strings tha tie the wings to the body are based off the fibres of the flesh of the plantain.

My redesign has two formes: a Maturing Forme and a Softened Forme. The Maturing Forme is Grass/Ground Type while the Softened Forme is Grass/Flying Type. The Maturing Forme has higher Attack and Defense while having very poor Speed; the Softened Forme has the opposite of these changes. The Ability 'Cycle Forward' switches Tropius' Formes:

Tropius switches to its Maturing Forme if the weather is Sandstorm, Hail, Shadow Aura, or Fog.

Tropius switches to its Softened Forme if the weather is (Extremely) Harsh Sunlight, (Heavy) Rain, or Strong Winds.

Clear Skies does not affect Tropius' current Forme.

The current Forme persists after battle.

Maturing Tropius do not like to move. Instead, they dig their legs into the ground and absorb nutrients through their claws in their legs. The nutrients help them grow. Meanwhile, their wings are wrapped around their bodies in a hard makeshift shell which also compresses their bodies to a dense hardness. They tend to be grumpy and keep to themselves.

Softened Tropius are far more friendlier, being happy to share their fruits t others. They are popular in the Carribean not only because of their fruits but also because of their large wings giving shade and breeze. Fibres ecure their wings to their bodies, helping them fly. Hugging the body of a Softened Tropius feel somewhat soft and squishy.

So I finally finished up my gemsonas redesigns. I've been working on these charecters for over five years, and im so excited to have a place to post about them! (P.S. I won't be going into story details in this post. For now, these are simply my crystal gems) All art belongs to me! Please don't steal it or I'll probably cry.

For starters, we have Turquoise who I originally made to be Lapis Lazuli's love interest. 👀 Though thay changed only about a month after making her!

Shes got a fun personality. Shes competitive, and loves to play rough with her teammates. I'd most likely compare her to Amethyst, but with more of Pearl's poise and ability to stay pristine. Shes in love with constructive chaos, which she would say suits her well. Her wepeon is a croquet mallet.

This next gem compliments Turquoise well, her girlfriend: Cat's Eye.

Now Cat's eye isnt a standard gem, but more a cut of a gem. (Which is explained by her back story) She has a very laid back personality, and she is fearless when in peril. She loves her team, but she tends to distance herself due to truama in her past. She'll look death in the eye, and draw her wepeon without hesitation. She is not quick to anger, but when you make her mad its best to back off. Her wepeon is a "Baraka" type sword that extends out of her gem after all.

Up next, we have a complicated gal, based off 50's fasion: Taaffeite.

If you're ever in need of someone who can get a job done proficiently and quickly, Taffy is your gem. Though, her wepeon may be holding her back in the hard hitting department, she always manages to use her giant sticky hand toy with great tactic. She has charm, depth and poise. She acts as a mother figure as well, and makes sure the team is fit and well.

Next we have the tech guru of the team: Moonstone!

Moon is really as awkward as they come. But he has a kind heart, and knows to be as helpful as he can! If you need someone to get an old piece of technology up and working again, Moonstone is your guy. His weapon is a bow, and the arrow is a gem destabilizer. Which would be super effective of his awkwardness didnt prevent him from being a big clutz in battle!

Lastly we have Moonstones solar opposite, Sunstone!

Sunstone happens to be one of the fastest members on the team, and the most wild! Surprising. Theyre wepeon of choice is two Hatchets. Theyre typically hanging out with the humans, and biting fire hydrants. Most would say Sunstone is like the family pet, but Sun's team values them just as much as anyone else. Sun can be found, harrasing wildlife and stumbling upon corrupted gems or golems 👀👀👀 (story related)

Investigation into Texas freeze highlights natural gas failures, frequency of cold weather events

Preliminary findings of a joint investigation into the freeze that left millions in Texas without power for days last February highlighted an increasing frequency of extreme cold weather events, as well as the devastation caused by the failure of natural gas-fired plants.

The joint report issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) cited freezing and natural gas fuel supply issues, including the failure to identify natural gas production and processing facilities as critical load, as the two largest causes for the disaster.

"Of the 1,823 unplanned outages, derates, and failures to start caused by freezing issues, 1,244 were in ERCOT, 473 were in SPP, and 106 were in MISO South," the report reads. "The most common sub-causes of generation outages and derates due to freezing issues were frozen instrumentation (sensing lines, transmitters) and icing on wind turbine generator blades."

Across ERCOT, SPP and MISO South regions, 55% of natural gas generating units (by MW of capacity) experienced unplanned outages and derates, compared to 22% of wind and 1% of solar.

Sean Gallagher, vice president of state and regulatory affairs for the Solar Energy Industries Association, commended the reliability of solar following the release of the FERC/NERC report.

“Even during record-breaking low temperatures in Texas, solar assets performed as expected during the February 2021 Texas blackout," Gallagher said in a statement. “Solar and storage will be a big part of the solution in Texas, and we look forward to working with state and federal leaders to continue to make it easier and faster to get solar projects online.” 

FERC and NERC issued 28 preliminary recommendations in response to February's extreme weather event, calling for reliability standards that require winterization for new and existing infrastructure and the protection of natural gas infrastructure from manual and automatic load shedding.

The report recommended further study of additional ERCOT connections, noting that SPP and MISO South benefited from connections with other regions.

Jeff Dennis, managing director and general counsel for the Advanced Energy Economy association, provided a live tweet summary of FERC/NERC's presentation of the report, noting FERC Chair Richard Glick's opposition to political rhetoric that renewables were the source of the problems.

"Today’s FERC/NERC Staff report to the Commission made a clear case that these cold weather-driven outages of generating resources are not 'black swan' events, but increasingly regular occurrences and that they have interconnected impacts on both the electricity and natural gas fuel supplies," Dennis said in an email to Renewable Energy World. "FERC and NERC appear poised to implement mandatory reliability standards to ensure that generators are prepared for these events and that planners and operators anticipate them better in the future."

Renewable energy advocates are closely watching the Texas Public Utility Commission's grid redesign to see if the renewables are unfairly burdened with resiliency costs.

In August, the U.S. Partnership for Renewable Energy Finance – made up of a coalition of corporations that includes Google, Amazon Web Services, and Goldman Sachs – sent a letter urging Texas leaders to scrap anti-renewable energy proposals crafted in response to the storm.

The letter addressed to Gov. Greg Abbott, Public Utility Commission of Texas Chairman Peter Lake, and leaders in the state legislature, said current policy proposals are built on the false premise that renewable energy sources – like wind and solar – were to blame for the outages.

In July, Abbott directed the PUC to “allocate reliability costs to generation resources that cannot guarantee their own availability, such as wind or solar power” and to “streamline incentives within the ERCOT market to foster the development and maintenance of adequate and reliable sources of power, like natural gas, coal, and nuclear power.”

Long Post- More under the cut~

Yeah, so I realized that Tick’s design didn’t fit with the ‘theme’ for Sparkyrs, so I went and fixed that.

The old version, while cute, lacked a few of the defining features of the species. It felt more like a Sparkyr themed axolotl than an axolotl Sparkyr. 

The first factor that had to change was Tick’s chubbiness.

Sparkrys are limber and athletic creatures. While they don’t take advantage of this in their lazy lifestyles, the species has developed an insanely quick metabolism, which burns calories and energy like paper in a fire.

For a Sparkyr that isn’t even close to its normal food source, Tick was a bit on the fluffy side, an aspect that is common in axolotl art that I tried to implement into his design. If he was a short bean, it wouldn’t matter as much, but as a tall boi, he needed to thin out to be realistic in terms of health.

He’s still a soft bean, not super thin, but slim enough to conform to the universe’s laws. 

Secondly, the old design lacked robotic features, unlike more cyborg-like designs such as Index. 

Some of this was an aesthetic choice, as Tick was supposed to embody the opposite of Index’s theme. Instead of a cold, hard, and manipulative creature, Tick is warm-hearted and loving. He strives to be more like his organic companions, leading to his softer design. 

However, this doesn’t excuse the fact that he was basically a Cat(?) with a screen. The new design has a brighter screen, with battery indicators present on his legs, which glow in the dark and change color based on status. This does more to show his pseudo-robotic nature, which he tries desperately to hide. 

Along with this, his fins, which are actually solar panels, now have blue veins running through them. Like Index, Tick’s mammalian paws have glowing paw pads

I also added cloven hooves to further accentuate how unnatural he is, making the trait a universal Sparkyr aspect.

I think the new design does more to communicate Tick’s internal conflict. He’s a Pix at heart, and while he is a good boi who just wants friends, he’s still a Sparkyr.

His hugs, while soft and loving, are cold and eerie; his laughter holds a static undertone; his veins run with oil and fuel; his screen goes dead and blank when he rests.

Tick is a great friend, and a gentle boy, but he’s also something terrifying... at least to the Fae.

A New York Museum Staple Gets a New Glimmer This article is part of our latest special report on Museums, which focuses on reopening, reinvention and resilience. When most of us hear the word “evolution” we think of Charles Darwin or the Lucy skeleton. We generally do not think about nonliving things, like rocks. But in recent years, scientists have begun applying the concept of evolution to a specific nonliving — but ubiquitous — object: minerals. This new perspective allows for a different kind of storytelling about both minerals, which are often found as sparkly, colorful crystals within rock, and the history of the planet. As the American Museum of Natural History in New York City prepares to reopen its redesigned Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals on June 12, evolution is front and center. George Harlow, a geologist who has been the curator of gems and minerals at the museum for nearly 45 years, said when scientists talk about the evolution of inanimate things, they are referring to changes that happen over time. “It’s an answer to the question of why, as life on Earth has changed over the last 4.5 billion years, have nonliving minerals changed too.” Today, there are more than 5,000 species of minerals — over triple the number from when they first developed — and over time they have diversified in chemical composition and color. The story of how that happened, that evolution, is a new one for the museum, Dr. Harlow said. “For the first time in this gallery, we are looking at life’s impact on the mineral kingdom.” The incorporation of this new science (it entered the scientific mainstream around 2008) is evident throughout the galleries, which have been redesigned for the first time since 1976, by Ralph Appelbaum Associates in collaboration with the museum’s exhibition department, led by Lauri Halderman, vice president for exhibitions at the museum. The old iteration of the exhibit hall was dark and had a layout reminiscent of Chutes and Ladders: stairs and winding passages filled with interactive exhibits and touchable rocks. But all that has changed. The space is much less of a labyrinth now, Ms. Halderman said. “And less mysterious.” The redesign feels spacious, brighter and intentional, with higher ceilings and a palette of neutral grays; even the lighting inside the cases has been meticulously planned and executed. Entering the new space, visitors are greeted by a pair of towering amethyst geodes, one 12 feet high and the other nine. Their massive interiors look a little like the universe itself, with pinpoints of white light scattered among glittering, dark purple crystals. In each glass case, minerals are displayed with the help of custom handmade mounts — a specialty of the museum — so that each specimen appears to be floating. In fact, the whole gallery is designed to let the minerals and gems take center stage, with little distraction. “This is very conscious on our part,” Ms. Halderman said. “We want the room to recede when you’re here. Although it’s a beautiful space, it’s not the focus.” Touch screens in the galleries will remain untouchable monitors for now, although one has been adapted so that visitors can see the information on their phones. One of the first exhibits is a spiraling timeline. A tiny dot of light at center signifies the Big Bang (although Dr. Harlow noted light did not actually exist then) and moves outward, with lines marking events that made possible the birth of minerals, including the formation of the solar system, the development of the Earth’s crust and the emergence of life. And then there are the colors. One of the more compelling of those events was “the great oxygenation,” a period when the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans first experienced a rise in oxygen, between 2 billion and 2.5 billion years ago, which resulted in a burst of color in minerals, a characteristic that hadn’t existed before. The exhibit includes some spectacular examples, like an intense blue-green chrysocolla; a pockmarked, deep orange crocoite; and a glittery, blood-red chunk of rhodochrosite. Storytelling plays a big role in these exhibits, whether about shifting continental plates, the movement of water or the history of a particular mine. “Science standards today emphasize big ideas that connect across disciplines, such as patterns in nature, cause and effect, structure and function,” Ms. Halderman said. “Those help you understand how minerals form, but also how everything forms.” In the Gem Hall, about 2,000 of the museum’s collection of more than 4,700 gems are displayed in warmly lit cases lining a three-sided room. Gems are minerals, too, ones that have been cut, ground and polished to enhance their appearance. Old favorites are still here but shown in an entirely new light (quite literally), like the luminous 563-carat Star of India Sapphire and the 632-carat Patricia Emerald. A new addition to the collection, donated by the New York jewelry dealer Siegelson, is the Organdie Necklace, designed by Michelle Ong, with more than 110 carats of diamonds set in platinum and made to resemble a delicately woven lace collar. (The necklace was worn by the singer Rihanna on a recent cover of Essence magazine.) Here, too, the focus is on storytelling (for now, small monitors will display a scannable QR code that allows visitors to see identification information on their phones). “We made a decision to use our labels to tell visitors global stories,” Ms. Halderman said. Those includes stories of the places where gems are found, how they are cut, their colors and unique properties, chemical composition, industrial uses, cultural uses and significance. A standout in the redesigned Halls is the Minerals and Light room, with displays that aim to show how light illuminates and interacts with gems and minerals, including those hidden deep within rock. The room feels a bit like a small theater, but in the place of a movie screen is a giant, glass-encased slab of rock — 19 feet long and nine feet high, weighing nearly 10 tons — taken from the Sterling Hill Mine, a once-active zinc mine in New Jersey that is now a mineral and mining museum. In daylight, this hulking rock is just a drab brown, but when hit with ultraviolet light its appearance is transformed, as layers of minerals light up in fluorescent colors. When the wavelength of light changes so do the colors, from stripes of magenta and pale green to an almost blinding orange and lime green. Everywhere in this redesigned gallery are reminders of the importance of both scale and time, and reminders that the living and the nonliving — life and rocks — may seem on the surface to be opposites but are actually deeply and profoundly connected.
