With the stories we hear about how toxic or downright dangerous public backlash can be towards gamedevs, what advice do you have for younger devs/people looking to get into the industry when confronted by this unfortunate reality?

There's two major pieces of advice I have.

For people who have not yet broken into the industry, reach out to devs and learn what you can from them. Ask them questions if you don't understand something and try to figure out what they mean if they answer you. Take the concepts of what you learn from them and apply it to your own personal work.

Your goal is not to have what you say acknowledged by these devs or to say something that you think is clever. You should be looking to these devs as people to learn from. Hiring managers will not care if you were acknowledged for saying something clever once by some game dev on twitter. We will, however, be impressed if you can do the work and can demonstrate that in both your own work and in the interview.

For those of us in the industry, my advice is different. I heavily suggest keeping any personal stuff as far away from your work as possible. Resist the urge to post about work stuff on your personal social media account. Keep your personal account personal, keep a work account for work. If you must post about game dev, do so hypothetically. Never talk about work stuff on your personal account. This is because your personal account irrevocably becomes a work account the moment you post about work on it, and anything you say on that account will be taken as a statement representative of the game and your employer for all time.

This can be especially difficult for the juniors who have been dreaming about a career in the game industry since they've been kids and have finally made it. When I started working on my first AAA franchise, I was super proud of the fact I joined the ranks and wanted to shout it from the heavens so that I could get all the jealous acknowledgement from those others still looking in. It really isn't healthy to make your job your identity, because it can mean a real loss of identity if there is a loss of job. Given the volatility of the game industry at large, I think there are much healthier things to make core to your identity than "worked on X game franchise".

the fandom on tumblr compared to the fandom on tiktok is just. so different. idk if its because tumblr is just in general a very unhinged place or what but the difference is outrageous. tiktok is like "oh this member is so hot 🥵🥵" n stuff like that while here on tumblr people are like rabid beasts. another thing too is that on tiktok, the till fans are the unhinged ones while here on tumblr the paul fans are the unhinged ones. i see these stupid edits on tiktok of like till just doing stupid shit and what not (a LOT of till the end and lindemann) while here well... everyone knows how the paul fans act. need to find a platform where its the schneider fans that are the crazy ones. that will be the perfect place just for me ☺️☺️

interesting take, i hope to find more Paul fans on tumblr, it has been a bit quiet (until the tour started ofcourse), so maybe i'll give it another good try after the post-tour blues is over 🌺

Tiktok i basically have for Richard and Rammstein official (the stuff they throw off of instagram but leave in there)

Twitter/X i stopped following a while ago (and never was much in the Rammstein fandom there really)

Instagram i also only follow a couple of blogs, so my view of that os probably very distorted

Reddit...well... let's say i don't 'get' Reddit really?

Facebook i know of some pages, but mostly for the older photos

I have a genuine question about likes here on Tumblr (and maybe anywhere I guess): do you guys press like here on A) posts that contain content you enjoy/agree with, B) posts from people you follow regardless of if you liked/read the content of the post, C) in hopes that those people will like your posts, or D) all of the above?

A few years ago when @dommestic and I were looking into going to hypnosis cons, we’d peek in Tumblr a lot. I mean a lot, because every day you’d find pages upon pages of scene logs, panel/class ideas, sometimes unpleasant gossip, and just about anything you could possibly want to fan the flames of your kinky kinkness. It was pretty great.

Late in 2018, Tumblr got pretty strict on the content it let through. It seems that it increasingly is starting to look the other way a bit now, but for the last few years people generally migrated to Twitter where it is much harder to find The Good Stuff. There’s been an increase in The Good Stuff on Tumblr lately, which I’m very happy to see as Twitter starts to do things like impose “daily Tweet viewership caps” which probably is going to be good for other companies’ business. Who wants the hypno kinkster audience? We could use a nice home.

I made a Mastodon on a server that’s... not my speed, really. I’d move to a new one if I had a good suggestion, or if there’s a new platform people are going to I’m all ears. I saw someone mention going to Bluesky, but that’s presently invite-only.

It’s my hope this just drives people back to Tumblr - or some other, better service - because I’m genuinely curious as to what people are doing. And the inspiration is nice. Maybe someone can set up a really good Substack or something. (Or already has done so?)

I don’t have too much personal to add - the DommesticPet World Tour kicked off in May with the first stop since 2020, and I’ve got at least a couple more scheduled for this year. (There’s a nonzero, but close to zero, you might get a chance to see me talk to a crowd somewhere not kinky. But we don’t talk about that here.) I hope you’re all doing very well and having a lovely time on your internets. Both of them.

I got a friend request from someone out of the blue, and am not entirely sure whether or not to accept it because I haven't the first clue as to the etiquette involved, or how the whole 'friends' thing actually works. I did try googling it but didn't find anything remotely useful...

I can tell you what I do?

I bop over to their account to see if they tend to watch the kinds of things I watch and review (mostly BL) and accept or reject based on that.

But honestly, that's what I do on Tumblr too. I visit new followers (with icons) and see if they tend to

create original content and

talk/repost (stuff I haven't seen before) about BL,

because that is the only reason I am on tumblr so I follow back based on how that person will change my feed. (I unfollow on the same principals.)

So if one of my moots suddenly becomes obsessed with... oh I don't know Enhyphen or some other 4th gen Kpop group, I just unfollow them. I've no compunction about why I exist on this platform and tailor it to my own amusement and enjoyment.

Also this explains why I might be happily chatting away with another account for months in my comments without realizing I’ve never friended them, especially is they have a place-holder icon.

I recommend you do the same. Follow back. friend back, if they seem interesting and share your interests.

Put the social back in social media.

Yo, I'm not going anywhere (Tumblr's the Hotel California if you know what I'm sayin') but I'm on Mastodon too now so it's time to hunt people down to stalk. Since it's federated I can follow anyone from any server (blocklists aside) if I'm understanding this correctly?

I'm liking what I see so far. It seems very tumblr-like in curating my feed and I like that a lot. The tag/safety filters are amazing too. (For the love of everything turn on slow mode though holy shit.)

(I also generated one of the invite links.)
