here are all the recs I posted for femslash february 2024...! each individual rec post can be found in my femslash feb recs tag. I actually thought I wasn't going to be able to do this because work got super chaotic, but in the end I couldn't bear to skip out on a leap year. that's a whole extra day for yuri.
last year I focused on official releases, so this year I wanted to focus on series that aren't technically officially available (plus a french-japanese film). fan translations are always a dicey for artists/translators/publishers/etc because obviously they need to get paid... but yuri's already such an overlooked genre that—in an official capacity—we end up with a couple drops from what's already a pretty small pool. I read hana to hoshi about a decade ago, and I keep submitting it to the seven seas survey for licensure! and yet!! no dice. and even when there are official releases, sometimes they just... disappear!? wish you were gone was licensed and then taken down, so for a while the only way to read it (if you missed out on buying it) was the fan translation. I think it's important to support artists and official releases, and also, to appreciate the thankless endeavor(/crime) of scanlation.
hope yall find something you like!

So... would you rather recommend Persona 4 or Persona 4 Golden to someone who's never played it?
This is a difficult question to answer, because if you're starting with the original Persona 4, you might get scared off by its significantly harder combat; it can be very punishing sometimes, and my absolute #1 recommendation if you choose to play it over Golden is PLAY IT ON BEGINNER. You'll be given 10 Moon Tsukubame that allow you to restart a battle if Yu is knocked out (which you'll definitely need), even if you plan on grinding and are confident with your JRPG experience, there are plenty of occasions where I've been 1hko-ed by stupid instant death skills and had to replay hours of a dungeon. The only places to save in P4 dungeons are in the lobby before you enter a dungeon, and just before the boss, and this means that you can lose up to 10 floors if you die. On the other hand, Golden allows you to restart from the beginning of a floor.
There are also some other combat balancing changes like Naoto having other elemental skills aside from mudo/hama that makes them a more viable pick against bosses, some enemies are easier and have elemental weaknesses when they didn't before, shuffle time is (i think) worse and takes a little bit longer after battle to complete as well.
TLDR; the combat in Golden is obviously improved quite a bit, and that's the biggest thing going for it aside from added content.
But I played through the original Persona 4 just fine on beginner, you just have to be a little bit more careful.
Now for the pros to the original Persona 4; you DEFINITELY get a much more satisfyingly paced game, it's far shorter, and you don't have to worry about any extra fanservicey Golden scenes (that you can easily find on YouTube after you're finished OGP4 if you're interested).
I much prefer Chie and Teddie's original voices, and though I didn't mention it much in that Golden Yosuke analysis post, the voice acting and direction seems to be a LOT better in P4 than P4G (it's noticeable when you encounter a Golden-exclusive scene, characters sound... different, particularly Yosuke who's voice seems to raise each time Yuri reprises the role). When I played through P4 I didn't mind Teddie, but something about his new voice acting/direction grates on my nerves and makes him way less likeable – I believe it's because his original voice actor played him as the way he was supposed to originally come across (naïve) instead being more in line with what Golden made him into (a pervert). And maybe it's just me, but I think the initial decision to have him speak in a higher pitched voice was partially because it made him sound a bit like a squeaky toy – at least that's the impression I got, and it works perfectly in the original, something about Dave Wittenberg's voice really makes him sound like what you'd expect of a toy – but Sam Riegel's Golden Teddie sounds like he's trying to hard to imitate the original performance, and is straining his voice (human Teddie is SIGNIFICANTLY better, his voice gets lower when he's out of the suit and sounds more natural).
Similarly, Chie sounds a lot more aggressive, and it can be hard to take her seriously with how over the top Erin can be at times (again, this is likely the fault of voice direction, and not the voice actress) and especially in the earlier parts of the game, it feels like when she speaks to another character, the tones don't... quite match up (likely due to her new lines being recorded 4 years after the rest of the cast). It's most noticeable when she speaks to Yosuke, because Golden Chie seems to REALLY have it out for him, while in the original she had a little bit more of an "oh you" tone to it. I know plenty of people prefer Erin Fitzgerald's Golden Chie voice, and her performance isn't all bad (she's especially great in the anime and spinoffs), but Tracey Rooney's Chie just works better in the original game.
So... Original P4 has less overall content, but the quality of said content is more consistent. Golden has the benefit of being released in 2012 on a portable system (which is very nice if you have a Vita), so if you choose to play P4 over Golden you will inevitably feel that P4 is a little dated without combat improvements, but if you DO finish P4 and decide to go through Golden for the extra content, you get a lot of new things to experience (including 2 new Social Links with Marie and Adachi, the ability to explore the shopping district at night and speak to friends about current events, added cutscenes, several new months to play through near the end of the game, etc.) but you'll also have played through the original and gotten to experience the main story as it was originally written.
Some other small changes: resolution is now up to 720p or 1080i (P4G) from 480p (P4), the UI is slightly different (text boxes), P4G looks much more vibrant and clear than the original's more natural colours, including the sprites which now have a bright, yellowish hue to them to match Golden's colour palette (I prefer OGP4's palette), all voice lines are much less compressed (P4's sound tinny).
You can also take screenshots on Vita and PC versions of Golden; unless you're emulating OGP4 on PC or have a capture card, you obviously can't take screenshots of the original PS2 version of P4.
If you have the patience, I would suggest both (especially since it's easy to emulate the original Persona 4 by this point and I have a full guide to setting up the emulator at the top of my blog, with the rom also included, so you can try it out with relative ease) but don't take my thoughts as definitive, because it all really comes down to personal taste. Many people play through Golden and love it, having no problems with the things I've mentioned (I'm a picky bitch), and you might too. If you're that turned off of what I've said about combat in P4 you can always watch a playthrough and then go through Golden yourself too.

Bookshelf Briefs 6/8/20
Ace of the Diamond, Vol. 26 | By Yuji Terajima | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – The fall season has begun! Furuya is wearing the ace number and dominates the first game, much to Eijun’s distress, since he’s still suffering from “the yips” after striking a batter with an inside pitch. Thankfully, Miyuki and Coach Kataoka arrange for Chris to drop by and teach Eijun a new trick, which seems to help get him out of his doldrums. Meanwhile, Furuya’s performance begins to deteriorate, rumors about Coach Kataoka’s imminent departure begin to circulate, and the guy who’s been observing them (but who is probably Kataoka’s replacement) plans to focus solely on cultivating Furuya the ace and objects to how much time and effort Kataoka devotes to the other players. I mean, I can only assume that this guy is going to get sent packing at some point, but I definitely appreciate that Terajima-sensei is able to make me this anxious about his presence. Perennially recommended. – Michelle Smith
A Certain Scientific Railgun: Astral Buddy, Vol. 3 | By Kazuma Kamachi, Yasuhito Nogi, and Kiyotaka Haimura | Seven Seas – The first half of this volume is a giant flashback, and you know those are always bad in the Indexverse. Expect dead kids, dead adults, and a whooooooole lot of evil science. Unfortunately, there’s also a lot here that relies on the reader knowing one of the antagonists is from New Testament Vol. 11… which we have not seen in English, and might never see. Too much continuity. Junko continues to be laughably retroactively strong, going toe to toe with a level 5 here. And there’s the bond between her and Misaki, which may be “master and servant” but is also a close friendship (and yuri tease, as Misaki herself demonstrates). Railgun fans will like this. – Sean Gaffney
The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún, Vol. 8 | By Nagabe | Seven Seas – The eighth volume of The Girl from the Other Side is unbearably sad—so much so that I struggled to finish it, as watching Shiva come to terms with losing Teacher is a shattering experience. Compounding my sense of anguish were the final chapters, in which we learn why the Inside world was so desperately interested in Shiva. The parallels between her situation and our current health crisis are impossible to ignore, reminding us about the human cost of capitulating to fear, ignorance, and superstition in the face of a pandemic. In a less fraught moment, I’d be inclined to recommend The Girl from the Other Side for the lessons it imparts, but I think it’s OK to decide that Nagabe’s allegory is a little too on-the-nose to offer insight or comfort right now. – Katherine Dacey
Go with the Clouds, North-by-Northwest, Vol. 3 | By Aki Irie | Vertical Comics – After two messy but interesting volumes that see-sawed between mystery and travelogue, Go with the Clouds, North-by-Northwest finds its groove in volume three. Michitaka—who disappeared from the previous volume—takes center stage in the latest installment, as Kei inadvertently stumbles across some important clues about what happened to his aunt and uncle back in Japan. Though Kei’s discovery propels the story in a new and unexpected direction, the latest plot twists feel earned; the sometimes awkward shifts in tone and genre that characterized the first two volumes are smoothed over by new revelations about Michitaka, and a new sense of urgency about solving the trail of gruesome deaths he’s left behind. The result is a compelling story that has the trappings of a Scandinavian crime show but the soul of an X-Files episode. Recommended. – Katherine Dacey
Kakushigoto: My Dad’s Secret Ambition, Vol. 3 | By Kouji Kumeta | Kodansha Comics (digital only) – Whereas Zetsubou-sensei made a point to seemingly attack everything in the world for leaving the author (and, by extension, Nozomu) in despair, Kakushigoto is zeroing in on the manga profession in particular. Here we get mysteries answered, such as why are the pages of weekly magazines colored differently, who determines the order the stories go in, and what is the exact nature of a deadline? We don’t get real answers for any of these, as it turns out things are very fluid. As for Hime, she’s still cute, and still investigating things with her not-Zetsubou girls mystery club. And there’s still that flashforward threatening us with the death of Hime’s father. Will the series get that dark? – Sean Gaffney
The Misfit of Demon King Academy: History’s Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants, Vol. 1 | By Shu, Kayaharuka, and Yoshinori Shizuma | Square Enix – This isn’t my usual fare, but I hoped it would help with my Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun withdrawal. And it actually did! Anoth Voldigord was the all-powerful demon king, but sacrificed himself to end a perpetual war with humanity, pledging to reincarnate in 2000 years. When he does so, he’s invited to a school attendend by his many descendants but nobody believes he’s who he says he is because his magic is too vast to be measured and all of the facts about his reign have been distorted or forgotten over time. Anoth isn’t too likable at first, but the fact that his smug announcements of superiority garner no reaction, his jokes fall flat, and he must deal with a pair of doting and dimwitted human parents all help to humble him a bit. I guess it sometimes pays to venture out of your comfort zone! – Michelle Smith
My Senpai Is Annoying, Vol. 1 | By Shiromanta | Seven Seas – Thankfully, the senpai is not annoying in the way that I feared—this is all on her. Futaba is a new OL at a company who is so short she looks about twelve years old. She also has a near-terminal case of tsundere. This mostly comes out when around Harumi, her senpai at the company, who is huge, nice, helps her with her work and occasionally lightly teases her, and she is absolutely not ready to deal with it. This manga has one joke—Futaba is embarrassed and gets mad to hide it—and if you like that joke, it can be fun. It’s also based on a webcomic, with most “chapters” being about two pages. Towards the end, there’s longer original content, and that works much better. Recommended for those who like 4-komas and tsunderes. – Sean Gaffney
New Game!, Vol. 9 | By Shotaro Tokuno | Seven Seas – You got the sense that Kou wasn’t going to stay in France forever, and sure enough, she’s back by the end of this volume. There’s some nice stories here about not-quite-rivalries between her and Aoba’s friend Hotaru, and of course the inevitable yuri tease between Kou and Rin, which will never rise above a certain level but that level is pretty damn high. Other than that, a big part of this volume features the danger of farming out parts of your game to outside companies to complete, as they’re harder to control and can easily affect quality in ways that need to be fixed somehow. We also see Aoba continue to grow into her role as a real adult, even as she continues to never quite take the starring role. Cute. – Sean Gaffney
Primitive Boyfriend, Vol. 1 | By Yoshineko Kitafuku | Seven Seas – Kamigome Mito is popular with the boys at her school but feels nothing for any of them, finding them all insufficiently manly. Mito is lamenting her circumstances while working on the family farm, when she suddenly receives a visit from Spica, Goddess of the Harvest. Mito’s hard work has not gone unnoticed and as a reward, Spica sends her back in time 2.5 million years to meet her soulmate, a member of the species Australopithecus Garhi. He takes care of Mito, she falls for him, and when she’s sent home just as his life is in peril, she’s desperate to return. It’s pretty fun, I guess, if you don’t let yourself get bogged down in the realities of how their relationship will never work. Thankfully, it’s also only three volumes long. It’s short, it’s unique, and thus I will keep reading to see how it all plays out. – Michelle Smith
Species Domain, Vol. 8 | By Noro Shunsuke | Seven Seas – The series has now reached the Culture Festival, and seems like it might slowly be gliding to an ending, which in a series like this means pairing up more people. The “joke” confession that wasn’t in the last volume gets revisited here, with much embarrassment all around. Kazamori’s desperation for other girls to be attracted to Ohki may end up getting her in trouble down the road. Mikasagi explains why he isn’t ready to commit to anything, etc. There’s also an extended bathhouse scene, for those who like fanservice, which includes discussion about where Mizuno should be, on the men’s or women’s side. Again, I appreciate the care they’re taking with this character. Fun. – Sean Gaffney
The Way of the Househusband, Vol. 3 | By Kousuke Oono | Viz Media -As I have said in previous reviews, you read this series for its one gag, and should not expect more than that one gag done extremely well. Beyond that, here we see that our househusband is not the only former yakuza trying to make a living doing mundane everyday things, and that it’s much easier to change what you do than how you act. We also see why he’s such a good husband, manipulating things a bit so that his wife can meet some live action Pretty Cure actors (or rather the non-copyright violating Pretty Cure knockoff). That said, I think it’s Santa’s appearance that is absolutely the highlight of the volume, along with the stunned reaction of all the children. Hilarious. – Sean Gaffney

If you didn't read the last chapter of Tsurune don't read the ask: OMG! I almost get killed in this "Masa-san lightly pinched Minato’s cheeks and pulled them" and in the car scene.I laughed so hard on minato he's really didn't think about hiding his feeling lol. what do you think about the chapter?
Took me almost two full days to reply to this, and if that doesn’t speak volumes about how wild this chapter was, then I don’t know what would.
I’d read spoilers of volume 2 right after it came out so I already knew what was gonna go down, and being very honest, the cheek pinching was something I’d actually expected to see at some point after reading the summaries of volume 1. And rather than wishing for it, I was waiting for it because it seemed so obvious to me that this was gonna happen one way or another. I mean, it’s just so much like Masaki to do something of that sort, lmao. But I admit I expected it to happen in a daily-situation scene and not… like this. As always, Ayano surpassed my expectations on the unapologetically huge amounts of gay.
I’ve mentioned this topic in my post about the differences between the novel and the anime. Minato may keep a lot of secrets from everyone, yet Masaki has been the sole exception to this ever since they met. I mean, look at volume 1. It’s basically Minato hiding nearly every important thing from literally everybody except his conveniently-there-by-narrative-default master. Volume 2′s chapter 3 is basically a massive meme based off this plot device, like:Shuu: *touches Masaki*Minato: Sir, that’s my emotional support coach.Anyway, my point is that Minato doesn’t hide anything from Masaki, ever. Not even the most embarrassing shit.
The chapter was very interesting. It was rather entretaining to see how inept Eisuke actually is regarding himself. The novel often references Amanojaku, so I was wondering if we’d ever get an Amanojaku-ish character, and sure enough, here he is.
Other than that, good God. Minato is such a fucking embarrassment. I adore this walking fivehead so much. Had to put the extent of my love for him and this chapter under a cut because it’s probably the lenghtiest ask response I’ve ever written.
I think I can’t even pinpoint what the best thing about this chapter was. Like, the details are very subtly placed in all the right spots as always, and this is probably what leaves the bigger impressions on me. And by “details” I mean the subtext and symbolisms.
For starters, Ayano knows very well how to fuck with plant language nerds. She’s used a lot of it with Masaki and Minato, and it feels like the bar just keeps going up. First it was oaks (strength and knowledge), then bamboo (inspiration), then azaleas (developing passion), and now it’s freaking bellflowers. What’s more: the ones that Minato stopped by were spotted bellflowers. They’re known for their heart-shaped foliage. In flower language, bellflowers stand for gratitude and unwavering love. And sure enough, Minato doesn’t waver at all before going into that bakery and buying a batch of cinnamon buns (did it really have to be that of all things, omg) for Masaki, specifically.
I can’t stress how wholly, completely, utterly unnecessary that was. There’s no heterosexual explanation to it. I mean, there’s no heterosexual explanation to a lot of things about these two, but the romantic connotation was really heavy on this one. You have to use a fucking magnifier to find the platonic in this bullshit, and it’s still hella hard to ignore the implications. It’s even harder when Minato is berating himself for buying the buns on impulse when he heard that they go well with coffee and thinking about how irritated he feels when Shuu is around Masaki. He doesn’t even try to pretend that he’s not jealous. Be more like any other oblivious sports anime protagonist and let me die in peace, for fuck’s sake.
I’m just trying to pretend that I don’t know cinnamon is associated with romantic love and often used to inflame passion, because that’s too fucking much.
On other news, I’m highly pleased that we get SeiKai hints even when Seiya and Kaito don’t show up together. Kaito mentioning Seiya’s name every two or three sentences and approaching Minato simply because he saw Kuma and thought that maybe Seiya was there was gold, tbh. It was a good break before the mattress fire that happens right after.
The way Minato found out that Masaki meant well and didn’t want him to become like he was in the past was just so priceless. Take this shit straight to the face, son. Get fucking wrecked by how much he cares about you.
It’s also really freaking hilarious to me how everything that concerns Minato’s relationship with Masaki involves shoujo manga tropes. Envious of your rightful rival being too long around your master? Check. Learning the hard way that it was all for your sake? Check. Getting frustrated and shouting like a bitch at the irony of it? Check.
Minato is Minato, though, so of course he acknowledges that he wants Masaki by his side in spite of this. Did he have to do that while lying in bed, though? I think the fuck not.
And cue Masaki texting him immediately while he’s doing that, because Masaki always shows up when he wants to see him, and because this has turned into a romantic comedy, apparently? Love me that age-old cliché where the main character goes to the window after getting a message and finds the person who’d been occupying their thoughts standing there by sheer unadulterated coincidence, and they fucking heard you, you little shit.
This comes in a set with the “first visit and you’re already inviting him to his room” trope because why not follow all the way down with the romcom narration structure since we’re already at it? Double entendrees every three phrases or so because go big or go home.
“Dad isn’t home yet, so should we go upstairs?”
Yeah, lmao, that’s what about every shoujo heroine says before getting lectured on how they “shouldn’t make that sort of invitation to a guy”.
“It feels great. Thank you, Masa-san.”
It doesn’t feel so great not being able to overlook this, Ayano.
“Well, I may not look it, but I am your master after all.”
SHUT THE FUCK UP, JESUS CHRIST.
Seriously, this shit only loses to Fifty Shades of Takehaya and his more than unasked-for lines about “punishing” and “thoroughly training” Kaito. Sure, none of this is on the level of dirty jokes, but the subtleties are still too many.
The fluff is what gets you good, though. Because that was fluff right there. No, it doesn’t classify as hurt/comfort. These bastards fluffy. I just wanna know who managed to stay upright after reading about Minato feeling his heart ache because it had been too long since the last time he’d seen Masaki smile at him, ‘cause I sure as fuck didn’t.
No time is wasted before they off their asses to the place where they first met, which is basically a world of their own at nighttime (it’s named Yata Shrine for a reason; fuck that reason). And of course there had to be your usual load of elusive language in the middle, where the destination is pitch-dark but the road there is all wildlife and stars and this sparkly wave of light at the end of the tunnel. Welcome to the land of bitch, this isn’t a shoujo, stop acting like one.
Or don’t. We’re indulging. Screaming internally the entire time, but still indulging.
The dialogue is so obviously crafted to seem like something else that it’s useless to pretend it wasn’t inentional. I already knew what was coming but reading about the whole thing was an experience.
“I’m happy that you became my coach at Kazemai but I’m also not, because I don’t get to keep you for myself.”
Did he have to say it like that? Abso-fucking-lutely not. But he did anyway, because since when does Narumiya Minato give a flying fuck about ambiguity versus precision?
Six kinds of gay here. And all of them confirm that Minato’s “mixed feelings” when seeing Kaito being so familiar with Masaki from the get-go were, in fact, pure jealousy. It’s not even envy, because that’s wanting something someone has and you don’t. Minato was even closer to Masaki than Kaito was at that point, so it was all just his Masaki-exclusive greed speaking, plain and simple.
This is what gets me about this scene, tbh. It’s so much like Minato to say that, but it’s so alien to read it in a shounen novel. I don’t recall seeing anything so direct and raw in any sports franchise aside from Yuri on Ice. The most we get is “I wanna do [insert sport here] with you”. But this case is a blatant “we’d be doing the thing we like together one way or another and I’d have preferred if no one else were involved”.
And this comes right before we get a reminder that Minato doesn’t like it when Masaki treats him as a child, again. That’s… something. I hate this something a lot.
Also, it feels like the two of them are having completely different conversations with each other. Masaki is talking about his struggle coaching Minato and pointing out the crap he has to deal with in having a student whose last words are probably gonna be something stupid like “oops” or “oh, shit”, and Minato is countering with apparently completely unrelated arguments.
“But didn’t you let Shuu touch your belly, Masa-san?”
The fuck does that have to do with anything? How is that of any relevance to the conversation? What is this gay nonsense?
“If anyone else heard only that, I’d sound like a pervert, wouldn’t I? Did you want to touch it too, Minato?”
JUST DISMISS IT, YOU MOTHERFUCKER. DON’T ENCOURAGE HIS FOLLY. LET IT DIE.
“I’m no pervert, so I’m good.”
And now the moment of crushing honesty is over. Time for lies and derision because we all saw earlier in this chapter that (I can’t believe I’m actually writing this) Minato did, in fact, want to touch Masaki. Boy just called himself a pervert, indirectly. Gotta congratulate him for playing himself for, like, the hundredth time, I guess.
Of course Masaki would get emo in this scene sooner or later, because the fact that he’s dealing with the most reckless character out of the cast is apparently not a pertinent reason for things to have ended up the way they did. And of course Minato was gonna do something about it. It’s almost obligatory by now that they lift each other up.
WHY LIKE THIS, THOUGH?
Like, there’s just too much here that doesn’t translate into a master-student thing. Okay, I can totally see that in the dialogue but the actions are screaming something else entirely. Obviously, as I always say, I’m not gonna label it as romantic. What I’m talking about is: this isn’t the behavior of someone interacting with a teacher, but of a person with another. I mean, no matter how you look at it, there would have been a lot to consider here regarding the minimum of restraint that one should have around their mentor or at least around their elders, but Minato is basically saying “fuck you” to all of this.
Yeah, sure, go reach out to grab his hand and gently brush his bangs off his eyes simply because you can’t help the urge to look into them. No big deal. It’s just the affection of a disciple. Anyone else would have done the exact same.
I JUST WANNA TALK, AYANO. I JUST WANNA TALK.
Not trying to stereotype or devalue the worth of teacher-student relationships. Just back to my previous point: you don’t do this shit to a teacher, realistically speaking. And even if anyone hypothetically had any gall to do that, neither the teacher nor any onlooker would disconsider it an advance. Anybody would find it a little bit out of place at the very, very least.
Also, that declaration? Literally Minato swearing he would have Masaki be the one teaching him for the rest of his life? This after having said similar bullshit like claiming that he would never let Masaki go or that he’d follow Masaki to the grave. The bar just keeps going up. So, in short, “you don’t have to be my master but I’ll be damned if you’re not my master forever”.
Ayano, you’re murdering us. You’re murdering your readers.
“I feel more relaxed when I talk to you, Masa-san.”
No news here but thank you for saying it anyway. There had to be icing on this cake. And the cherry on top was Masaki’s explanation about the word “talking”. Are you telling us that these idiots hand their hearts over to each other every time they open up like this, Ayano? IS THAT WHAT YOU’RE FUCKING SAYING, AYANO?
Love me all of Minato’s non-existent heterosexuality being killed with fire.
I imagine that Minato must have made the cutest face when seeing Fuu again. Fuu, the owl with a heart-shaped face, showing up at the most convenient time. Because heart-shaped leaves weren’t enough, apparently.
The end of this chapter made me feel a tiny bit bad for Shuu, though, because it was one more instance of something that he and Minato and no one else had in common that got overwritten and outshone. It’s definitely a parallel to when they were little kids learning under Saionji and hiding it from everyone until a certain point, yelling at the top of their lungs and being competitive while taking things seriously to an extent. Here, we have Minato and Masaki in perfect sync, reproducing the exact same thing that Shuu and Minato had learned so many years ago but with experient successfulness and also complete harmony. And this time, it’s 100% their secret only, taking place at night without the knowledge of anybody, with no audience, no parents and no teacher.
It’s… too much, lmao. In every sense. Shuu literally stands no fucking chance next to Masaki and I love it. *broadcast lady voice* Fujiwara Shuu. Repeating; Fujiwara Shuu. Your wife Senichi is waiting for you at Kirisaki High.
And of course, the chapter had to be closed with a finishing blow. God fucking dammit. Minato packing coffee to share with Masaki would have been enough, but nay, Masaki also had to bring the fucking oyaki. From the fact that they’ve had oyaki together before at the shrine and that these oyaki are from the bakery where Minato had bought the cinnamon rolls without a second thought, it’s sort of really obvious that Masaki bought them to eat together with him.
I didn’t ask for any of this and now I need to lie the fuck down.

Saga on Ice - Yuri on Ice Karatsu Tourism Collaboration
Saga on Ice is a special tourism collaboration held by the city of Karatsu in Saga Prefecture, as Karatsu was used as the model for Hasetsu, Yuri’s home town in Yuri on Ice. Saga prefecture is right next to me(I live in northern Fukuoka), and although I’ve been to Saga city I’ve never been to Karatsu. I’ve always been meaning to explore Kyushu some more given how much time I’ve spent living here, and given that this event was going on over Golden Week and @hideoutfromreality was visiting I figured it was a good chance.
What I knew: The Karatsu tourism organization are really excited about Karatsu being featured in an anime and want to take advantage of it with some limited merch. What I didn’t know: The Karatsu tourism organisation are really, really excited about this and kinda went all out lmao. I was surprised at how much they did to attract YOI fans to the place.
Anyway, I bought a little Viktor with me, so here’s my photo report of the things we saw.
Tumblr media
First here are some pics of the pretty scenery on the way to Karatsu from Fukuoka. The train runs along the Kyushu coast and is extremely beautiful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, what’s that in the distance?
Tumblr media
It’s kinda hard to make out here, but its in the middle. We’ll see it again later.. Anyway, the train soon pulls into Karatsu station and when we walk down the steps this is the first thing we see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also had this poster up, the one used in-show to advertise ‘’Onsen on Ice’, the Yuri/Yuri showdown. I thought it was just in the station but it was actually all over the town, stuck on multiple buildings and store windows, in much the same way it probably was in the show itself. It made me laugh every time I saw it.
Tumblr media
When you go through the gates you are greeted by these three in front of the Tourist Information Centre.
Tumblr media
Um excuse me? Where’s the best boy?
Tumblr media
It’s okay guys I found him.  All this art was specially drawn for the tourism collab. Makkachin is wearing the same helmet that the actual Karatsu mascot wears.
Tumblr media
These flags were used out the front of restaurants/cafes/businesses that were participating in the campaign. there were...a lot of these.
Tumblr media
(yurio never looks like he wants to be there lol)
Some merch/ You might notice Choromatsu is there. This is because a while ago Karatsu also had an Osomatsu-san tourism collab, and I have no idea why. I assume that it’s a mix of a) Karatsu sounding similar to Karamatsu and b) Osomatsu-san is apparently required by law to be everywhere in Japan at once c)Karatsu’s tourism agency will take what they can get to attract tourists. Anyway, there’s still left over merch from that, and most of it is Choromatsu, so every now and then I’d see him looking all sad and miserable next to the YOI stuff, and it made me laugh.
Tumblr media
(The YOI merch above are tea cakes I believe) More merch;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought it was funny that they included those generic poodle plushies despite them not being official merch. The sign even says ‘Makkachin-ish plush”.
Tumblr media
Heading outside the station, here’s the statue Yurio found so creepy.
Tumblr media
And here’s the shopping arcade Yurio pitched a fit in.
Tumblr media
They really want you to know that, too.
Tumblr media
Here’s one of the participating cafes, you can see the flag out the front. All the participating eateries (and again there were HEAPS) had just one YOI-themed menu item. Most didn’t have a lot to do with the characters they were attributed to, but the point was to promote Karatsu specialities. We didn’t want to even bother trying to go to every cafe, just as long as we got katsudon and piroshki. (unfortunately the cafe doing the piroshki had completely sold out of their batch when we visited and weren’t due to restock for hours) Anyway, I can’t remember what this place had, I think it might have been the JJ baked curry.
Tumblr media
Karatsu is a really pretty seaside town - the air is really salty and smelled nice, and it reminded me somewhat of Coffs Harbour in NSW.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s that in the distance #2
Tumblr media
Here’s the beach! Viktor and Yuri had a heart-to-heart here.
Tumblr media
What’s that in the distance #3? I’m sure it’s obvious now, and that’s where we headed next.
Tumblr media
But to get there we have to get up the hill. You can walk up the steps, or you can get the elevator here.
Tumblr media
The elevator moved diagonally, and Skins found this so incredible she took a video of it. Here’s the amazing view from the top!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These guys are enjoying the view too.
Tumblr media
“hey guys its your pal Karawan-kun, you know, the actual mascot of Karatsu, please dont forget me’‘
Tumblr media
Karawan-kun is beckoning us into the gift store, which contained a lot of Karatsu souvenirs and also more of the YOI merch. Plus!
Tumblr media
A signed poster! Photos were invited.
Tumblr media
Apparently one of Karatsu’s products is colourful gum molded into animals and various other things, and they were selling a Makkachin version.
Tumblr media
I wanted to get at least one of the collab items to commemorate the experience so I got a lil Makkachin keyring. They only had the one size bag though, which was kinda funny...
Tumblr media
Anyway, if you haven’t figured out what’s up on this hill yet...
Tumblr media
viktor voice: HASETSU CASTLE!!!
Tumblr media
HASHTAG: NINJA!!!
Tumblr media
“REALLY!? NINJA!?’‘ Anyway I’m not sure if you’re able to go into the castle but it didn’t seem you could at the moment. It looks like there are actually repairs being done there. This is also where the stairs Yuri does training on are. (They’re also the stairs we could have taken up instead of getting the elevator. We took the stairs on the way down though.)
Tumblr media
These people here were also here for the event. I could tell because they were carrying maps, had merch with them and I also heard them talking about Yuri’s training montages. Actually, a good deal of the people here were YOI fans, they weren’t exactly hard to spot. Anyway before we go down, the wisteria.
Tumblr media
Looking up the staircase from below:
Tumblr media
We decided to catch the bus here cos it was getting really hot, but we got to see a lot of the town from the window. Here is the bridge that Yuri flails across on multiple occasions.
Tumblr media
Fun fact: I missed getting a photo but a group of three girls, one of whom was carrying the Makkachin-shaped plushie tissue holder that Viktor has, were trying to imitate Yuri’s run when we went past...
Tumblr media
(I took that pic earlier, but that’s the bridge from the castle)
Our next stop was a little harder to get to as it was outside the main town centre, but it was one of the most interesting. Kagamiyama Onsen!
Tumblr media
Yep! It’s an onsen inn. Whether it’s the actual inn that inspired Yuri’s family’s ‘’Yutopia’’, I dont know, but it was the place serving katsudon for the collab.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A signed pic from Kubo at the counter.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, it turns out that the onsen restaurant had set times for lunch and dinner, and lunch was already over when we got there. Dinner wasn’t going to start for another few hours, and given that we didn’t get to eat anything else that day (due to the piroshki being sold out), we didn’t really wanna wait around for it due to being starving so decided to go somewhere else. It was kinda sad to not be able to have the katsudon, but it wasn’t a waste of time to visit the inn. Because..
There were cosplayers hanging out there! They were very very excited about us being fans and very very happy that we recognised them.
We decided to find somewhere else to eat before we died of hunger and it turned out there was a Hamakatsu right near the inn anyway. It’s not katsudon that comes with a YOI postcard but who cares it’s katsudon, and it was still damn good, and a nice way to end the tour.
Tumblr media
aaaaaay And now for something kinda funny. When I realised that the inn was called Kagamiyama onsen, I was like “huh, that’s weird! So Saga has a Kagami Mountain too!” I’ve been to Kagami Mountain both as a field trip back in 2009 and again with my dad/sister when we went driving around Kyushu once. And for some reason I thought it was in Fukuoka, but...it’s the same damn mountain. I’d already been to Karatsu twice before and had no idea! Kagami mountain is a sacred mountain with a famous shrine (Kagami shrine) up the top, and thus the entrance to the road that leads up the mountain has this giant impressive gate you can see here.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the tourism collab event was a lot of fun and it was a nice excuse to get to see Karatsu (or at least, more of Karatsu, seeing as I’d only seen Kagami Mountain and the beach near it before). The scenic train trip there alone was worth the price, and I’m looking forward to going again (which will be in another 3 weeks). Saga on Ice won’t be running anymore then but I’d still really love to try out some of the cute cafes we passed.
I really like when anime goes out of its way to draw attention to lesser known parts of Japan instead of just setting it in anywheretown, Tokyo. YOI has always been extra special to me for that Kyushu flair.

“Where the fuck did that clown come from?” something with the Russian skate fam plz I need it
Oh man, okay. I mean the temptation to have the clown be Georgi in his Carabosse makeup is so much but….yeah
Ice skaters were often through gifts at the end of their performance. Plushies and flowers rained down onto the rink with the applause and most of them were usually cleaned up and never seen again. However, for some reason that the majority of team had yet to understand, Mila had chosen to keep a plushie clown that had been thrown to her. And that would be fine, if it were a cute one, something child friendly. This one though was the thing of nightmares, the kind that looked like it would come to life in the night and slaughter you in your bed.
The first to encounter it was Georgi, whom Mila carefully hid behind as he sat fixated on his ex, Anya’s, performance. He never saw the sneak attack coming.
“Hello Georgi, I love you.” Mila put on her best creepy little girl voice as she lent the plush round his shoulder. Luckily for him, the loud, high pitched scream that left him was drowned out by the cheers as Anya finished her performance.
“Why would you do that?!” He yelled after her as she cackled, putting the plush in front of her face and making it dance.
“You need to move on, Georgi. Moooove oooon.”
He threw several choice words after her before he was pulled back into his seat by Yakov, who looked like he was wondering what he did to deserve these children. But Mila was far from done. She knew her next target.
Victor was always easy to find if you knew where Yuri Katsuki was. When she spotted them across the seats Mila pulled her black hood up and started inching her way toward him. With the clown poised at the ready, she readied herself for the attack. She took a deep breath, opened her mouth and-
“Mila…what are you doing with that clown?” Victor sat looking at her with a raised eyebrow, head tilted in confusion. Mila groaned and dropped into the seat next to him.
“Vitya, you’re no fun.” She stuck out her tongue at him, hugging the clown to her. It took a moment before she noticed a tuft of black hair over Victor’s shoulder. “Yuuri….”
“Has the clown gone?” Came a small voice and then she noticed the hand that was clinging to Victor’s arm, gold ring glinting in the bright lights of the rink. “Can it go?” A smirk formed on Mila’s voice as back the clown came to lean over Victor’s shoulder.
“Why don’t you love me, Yuuri?” She put the little girl voice back on, “I’m such a cute clown!” A string of Japanese came from Yuuri, that if she had to she would guess was swearing, as he pressed his face into Victor’s shoulder.
“Mila….” Victor’s hand came up to cover the clown’s face. “Don’t scare Yuuri, that’s mean.”
“Vitya, you sound like like my mother,” Mila whined and stood back up, turning to leave.
“I know Yura doesn’t like clowns either,” Victor added, casual enough to seem just a throwaway comment but Mila knew an offer when she was handed one. A grin formed on her face as she all but skipped away.
Yuri was harder to find, being around the same height or shorter than most of the competitors and public that filled the building and lined the rink. So Mila spent a lot longer than she wanted to searching for him, constantly finding small blondes and yet not the right one. She was getting ready to give up when her phone buzzed with a text from “
Otabek spotted her as she crept up behind Yuri but did little more than frown, leaving him completely unsuspecting. She lent the clown round in front of Yuri’s face with a grin,
“Boo!”
The speed at which she has to move out the way to avoid the flailing limbs and attempted kicks is worth it for the sheer panic on his face.
“What the fuck?! Get that away from me, hag!” His hands are clenched at his side, trying to shout over Mila’s delighted giggles. “Where the fuck did that clown come from?” Mila pauses for a second to calm herself then pulls her best Lilia face.
“Yuri Plisetsky, don’t use ugly words.” There’s a moment of silence then Yuri’s hand has to come up to hide a grin.
“Looks like you do have talent, hag.”
“Love you too, primadonna.”

Is Defeating Diabetes Kit, a program by certified nutritionist and New York Times bestselling author Yuri Elkaim price your cash? Scan this review to the end and discover why Contra Health Scam is not therefore thrilled concerning this program while it is not a scam! Elkaim claims that his product has the ‘life saving’ information for those tormented by Kind 2 Diabetes and pre-diabetes. His pitch page essentially centers on selling info regarding some ‘super starch’ that has the potential of utterly reversing your Type two Diabetes while not having to require any drugs or insulin shots. However before I go more, lets first of all verify Elkaim’s identity, shall we? Who is Yuri Elkaim? yuri elkaim defeating diabetes kit review e1466031963619 Defeating Diabetes Kit Review: Is Yuri Elkaims Product Value It? Yuri Elkaim could be a certified Holistic Nutritionist and fitness knowledgeable who has been practicing for regarding thirteen years now. He holds High Honours degree in Physical Education and Health/Kinesiology from the University of Toronto. He also was a former football player but had to quit thanks to unexplained bouts of fatigue and different health issues. However through it all, he mustered the energy to coach himself to be healthy and match … and for 7 years he served because the strength & conditioning/nutrition coach for the University of Toronto men’s soccer team. In keeping with his Amazon profile, Elkaim has authored ‘over one hundred thirty’ workout programs. His book All-Day Energy Diet is a New York Times bestseller. He has also been featured in many reputable news retailers like Huffington Post and may be a contributor at US News & World Report. He is also the owner and professor of Super Nutrition Academy, a program that claims to supply the ‘essential’ health data that folks actually would like for smart health. It's from this academy that Defeating Diabetes Kit is being marketed. I will additionally ensure that he's the owner of the product. What is Defeating Diabetes Kit? Like I earlier stated, Defeating Diabetes Kit is centered on a ‘super starch’ that has been scientifically proven to reverse the course of Type a pair of Diabetes and stop its progression. Elkaim says he got the motivation to seek out this remedy when watching his father suffer from the disease for additional than 5 years. Elkaim currently claims that his father is thus healthy that ‘you’d never apprehend my dad had ever been diagnosed with diabetes,’ thanks in half to ‘this mysterious super starch.’ Defeating Diabetes Kit is not simply regarding the ‘super starch’ though. It consists of 4 books specifically:     The Super Starch Solution: This eBook shows you the best natural sources of the ‘super starch’ and a way to harness its diabetes-defeating powers. Real worth: A ‘grossly underestimated’ total of $27.     The way to Eat to Defeat Diabetes: This 43-page book contains 14 ‘diabetes-friendly’ recipes, a ‘seven-Day Rapid Results Diabetes-Friendly Meal Plan’, an ‘updated’ list of diabetes-friendly foods, supplements and herbs … and the so-called ‘ research’ on the $64000 explanation for diabetes that trendy doctors do not know. Real worth of the book: $250.     twenty Delicious Diabetes Recipes: This is a separate book that contains twenty ‘no thinking required’, ‘mouthwatering’ recipes that are diabetes friendly. Real price: $seventeen.     Iso Burn ‘No Movement’ Workout: Elkaim claims he personally invented this workout which, per him, is based on ‘isometric coaching’ and will NOT require any movement the least bit. ‘No bending. Therefore What are the Pros of Defeating Diabetes Kit?     The biggest professional of this program is that its owner, Yuri Elkaim is real and is extremely who he says he's. You can easily verify his existence and expertise on nutrition and health … and i’m confident that he has indeed helped a lot of people in maintaining smart health.     The ‘super starch’ he is talking concerning – that is raw potato starch, btw – has indeed been scientifically proven to be of benefit to those battling Kind two Diabetes. This starch is known in the medical world as ‘resistant starch’ as a result of it's not digested by the body. Consuming resistant starch exerts its health edges to  Kind two diabetics by increasing insulin sensitivity. In other words, resistant starch helps the body to acknowledge and use insulin. [Precision Nutrition] These 2 professionals alone are the main reasons why Defeating Diabetes Kit isn't a scam. HOWEVER… Why Contra Health Scam Will NOT Like Defeating Diabetes Kit one. Scammy Advertising The first impression I got when I stumbled on Defeating Diabetes Kit’s pitch page for the primary time was that it absolutely was a scam by an identity thief. This is as a result of the means it's presented appearance no completely different from all the scams already exposed on this blog. First of all, I don’t perceive why I can’t leave the page in peace if I’m not interested in watching the video. Why not add a link to the text version on the video page rather than employing a pop-up to dam me from leaving before showing me the text version? a pair of. This Speak About ‘Huge Pharma’ Conspiracy. In preference to go directly to explaining how his program will facilitate them defeat Diabetes, Elkaim instead determined to scare his potential purchasers by telling them of the harmful effects of this type a pair of diabetes drugs … a typical psychological tactic usually used by scammers against individuals with chronic, life threatening diseases. He even went as far as alleging that pharmaceutical companies don’t care regarding your health because they are public companies whose stocks are being traded on the Stock Exchange market. Yes, they're crooks in every business, including the health business. But the reality is that the first thing doctors suggest to type 2 diabetes patients is lifestyle and diet changes, NOT medicine! In drugs, drugs like Metformin don't seem to be seen as 1st line therapy for type 2 diabetes, however are rather seen as a last resort treatment for those that cannot maintain adequate diet therapy. three. Insults the Medical Profession Judging from his personal website and the way Defeating Diabetes Kit was presented, Yuri Elkaim loathes doctors. In his website, he says he visited doctors for 7 consecutive years over his health problems (autoimmune alopecia, extreme weakness) and all they did to him was to inject his head with medication. ‘…not a single doctor had any idea of what to try and do alternative than to inject cortisone directly into my scalp…’ he writes. ‘Not one doctor or “specialist” ever speculated on what might have caused my health problems to start with or what could be done to unravel them…They were more inquisitive about getting me on experimental pills and steroid creams or injecting my scalp with who knows what.’ Don’t get me wrong here. It is utterly fine for Elkaim to dislike doctors as a result of of the unpleasant expertise he had with them. However implying that doctors are idiots who understand nothing concerning curing health issues but loading their patients with ‘huge pharma’ drugs is wrong. It's a slap within the face of the medical community, who work harder than anyone else within the health trade to ensure that sick folks are nursed back to health. Is Defeating Diabetes Kit Value It? Defeating Diabetes Kit is focused on resistant starch, a kind of carbohydrate Elkaim claims is ‘rarely discussed.’ Well sort ‘resistant starch’ on Google and click on ‘search’, and you’ll see that ‘resistant starch’ is very well mentioned. Heck, it even features a Wikipedia page! The sources of resistant starch are various. Even the white bread you eat has resistant starch. But some foods have additional resistant starch than others. Raw potato starch is currently touted as the best supply of resistant starch. [Authority Nutrition] Thus if Defeating Diabetes Kit is all about telling you concerning resistant starch, then it's undoubtedly not worth your cash because that information is already everywhere on the net, free of charge. Elkaim apparently is aware of this, that is why he added the additional books and therefore the bonus ‘The All-Day Energy Diet Community Diet Cookbook’ to form his offer price considering. Had it been he didn’t add them, Defeating Diabetes Kit would have been worthless. PONDER ON THIS QUESTION: Why is Yuri Elkaim providing FIVE books supposedly value $368 at simply $thirty seven? Final Recommendation: You may Attempt Defeating Diabetes Kit Check out Defeating Diabetes Due to the fact that this program has more cons than pros, I can not add it to Contra Health Scam’s Whitelist. Right currently it's hanging from a cliff … and solely your feedback can determine whether or not it makes it to the Whitelist or be tossed into the dustbin as a scam. Therefore if you've got used Defeating Diabetes Kit, please share your experiences with us within the comments section. Thank you!

You can simply verify his existence and expertise on nutrition and health … and that i’m assured that he has indeed helped a lot of individuals in maintaining sensible health.     The ‘super starch’ he's talking regarding – which is raw potato starch, btw – has indeed been scientifically proven to be of profit to those battling Kind a pair of Diabetes. This starch is understood in the medical world as ‘resistant starch’ as a result of it is not digested by the body. Consuming resistant starch exerts its health advantages to  Sort two diabetics by increasing insulin sensitivity. In different words, resistant starch helps the body to recognize and use insulin. [Precision Nutrition] These two pros alone are the most reasons why Defeating Diabetes Kit is not a scam. HOWEVER… Why Contra Health Scam Does NOT Like Defeating Diabetes Kit one. Scammy Advertising The first impression I got after I stumbled on Defeating Diabetes Kit’s pitch page for the first time was that it had been a scam by an identity thief. This is because the means it's presented appearance no different from all the scams already exposed on this blog. First of all, I don’t understand why I can’t leave the page in peace if I’m not interested in watching the video. Why not add a link to the text version on the video page rather than employing a pop-up to block me from leaving before showing me the text version? a pair of. It is fully fine for Elkaim to dislike doctors as a result of of the unpleasant experience he had with them. But implying that doctors are idiots who recognize nothing regarding curing health issues apart from loading their patients with ‘huge pharma’ medicine is wrong. It is a slap within the face of the medical community, who work harder than anyone else in the health industry to ensure that sick folks are nursed back to health. Is Defeating Diabetes Kit Value It? INTERVIEW: So I’m a Spider, So What? Shun Voice Actor Shun Horie
Tumblr media
In coordination with the current season of So I’m a Spider, So What?, Crunchyroll News was given the opportunity to officially translate interviews with the staff and cast of the series. You can read the original Japanese interview with Shun Horie right here.
The interview was conducted by Daisuke Iwakura.
Tumblr media
So I'm A Spider, So What? Relay Interview: Shun Horie as Shun. "He may not be very reliable right now, but it'll be interesting to see how he grows."
Part 4 of the interview series for the TV Anime So I'm A Spider, So What? features Shun Horie, who plays the character of Shun! How does he portray a character who's serious with a good sense of right and wrong, but still in the process of growing up? And what kind of drama will unfold in the human side of the story? We ask all about what to expect.
Tumblr media
—The story has finally begun. What do you have to say about the first two episodes?
Horie: Early on it was explained to me that Shun is the protagonist of the human portion of the story, but he's still not quite acting like one, so you get the impression he hasn't sorted himself out yet. His adoration for his brother, the Hero Julius, is more strong than anything else about him, and it feels less like he's trying to live up to that example and more like he's just chasing his brother's coat tails. There's a mixture of, "Is he gonna be okay?" anxiety and, "He's just getting started," expectation.
—He does seem to be kind of infatuated with the idea of Julius whenever he comes up.
Horie: I agree. (Laughs) In the scenes where Shun talks about Julius, the audio director told me to talk in a higher pitch and to sound more excited.
—That's interesting. What approach did you bring to the role in general?
Horie: I was told at the audition to not make him seem too heroic, so I make sure to try and emphasize how weak and underdeveloped he still is. It ended up being harder than I thought, especially as the number of battle scenes increased. It's hard to maintain that underlying vulnerability. Take a scene where he's fighting with a sword, for example. It's difficult to know how much oomph to put into the sounds he makes. I've received direction to "make sure to leave some weakness in there" before.
Tumblr media
—Is the idea to show how gradually Shun grows over time?
Horie: I think so. Shun has a lot of trials waiting in his future, where he's going to get a little bit stronger every time. It helps to have that long-term perspective on where he's going.
—Was there anything particular about the human side of the story from episodes 1 and 2 that you wanted to make note of?
Horie: I think Hugo's presence is hard to ignore. You can feel how ambitious he is and tell how high of an opinion he has of himself. It gives him the impression of subconsciously looking down on everyone, which makes you worry about him becoming a source of conflict and misunderstanding.  He calls their teacher Filimøs "Oka-chan" and is casually friendly with his other classmates, but... you get the feeling he could be dangerous.
Tumblr media
—There's a scene in episode two where Hugo talks about becoming the strongest human, and that doesn't seem to sit right with Shun.
Horie: Right. Because Shun thinks the strongest human should be his brother, Julius. (Laughs) I don't think Shun and Hugo's relationship is going to be smooth sailing going forward, but I personally can't bring myself to hate Hugo, so I hope things don't get too caustic between them.
—Kaito Ishikawa, who voices Hugo, is in the same talent agency as you, right?
Horie: We're recording voiceover in smaller groups, but I'm always glad when I get to work with Ishikawa-san. We both ended up as main cast members in another show at the same time as this one, and it's made things a lot easier, because there's a kind of natural interplay that develops from getting to work together frequently. There was an episode that was a big turning point in Shun and Hugo's relationship, and I told him afterwards, "That was fun," and he was glad to hear it. (laughs)
—Are there any other characters you find interesting at this point?
Horie: Yuri and Fei, I'd say. Yuri seems cute enough, but like her character introduction implies, she can get tunnel vision about certain things. There are scenes where she says some ominous stuff coming up, so I'm curious and anxious about how she's going to play into the story moving forward. As for Fei... I had a lot of trouble figuring out how Shun would interact with her.
Tumblr media
    —What do you mean?
Horie: Fei is kind of like Shun's partner in a lot of ways. And I wasn't sure how to really dig into how they get along... Fei was a bully when she was a human, and thinks that her monster form is a kind of punishment for that. And when it came up, I thought about how, even though she's so close to Shun, she used to be a bully. I'm pretty sure that Shun knew that Mirei Shinohara (Fei's previous life) was bullying people. It made me wonder about the two of them becoming friends in spite of that. It kind of stuck in my mind...
—It sounds like you personally have trouble accepting it.
Horie: I think so. I believe the only person that she was bullying was a girl named Wakaba-san, and that her relationship with Shunsuke Yamada (Shun's past life) wasn't particularly rough. But it makes me wonder about Shun, who lets this bully ride around his shoulder like his partner. It took me a while to accept that. KitaEri's (Eri Kitamura) acting is really good too, and gives off a really stuck-up vibe, which just made it harder. (laughs)
—Was there anything in particular that helped you understand their relationship?
Horie: Moving forward, the story is really going to dig into what kind of person Shun is, and there will be a scene that makes clear what his position is relative to his classmates. Portraying things like that helped me understand, eventually. Anyone who is interested in the relationship between Shun and Fei will have plenty to look forward to.
Tumblr media
—On another note, what do you think of the Kumoko parts of the story?
Horie: There's such a clear distinction between the human segments and Kumoko's in terms of the atmosphere and the sense of world-building, it's almost like getting to enjoy two shows at once. When I first got the script, I didn't know that Kumoko would be 3DCG or that the human parts would be so smoothly animated, so it came as a surprise to actually see. It's interesting to watch the different parties doing their best in totally different situations. Other than that... I'm honestly intimidated by how talented (Aoi) Yuki-san is, especially since we work at the same agency.
—She had a remarkable number of lines in the first episode.
Horie: Oh, definitely. (Laughs) When I saw how much of the first script was nothing but Kumoko lines, I started to feel a little anxious. The human part of the story, especially in the second half, didn't have nearly as much, which really made how much Kumoko had to talk stand out in comparison. Yuuki-san records her lines separately, so usually those of us from the human part of the story just talk about how amazing her work turns out after the fact. (laughs) Her acting is honestly really incredible. She talks almost non-stop, yet you never get tired of listening to her, and she does a great job of accentuating every moment.
—The fact that your recording sessions are separate feels like the story being reflected in real life.
Horie: That's exactly the case. Until the finished episode is ready, I don't know what Yuuki-san's performance is like, so it's like we really did reincarnate into different places. Ishikawa-san, KitaEri-san and I will wonder how Kumoko is doing when we're recording.
Tumblr media
—Thank you for talking with us. Do you have anything you want people to keep an eye out for in episode 3 and beyond?
Horie: The situation starts to change drastically on the human side from this point on, particularly the relationship between Shun and Hugo. This will result in Shun starting to grow more as a prince and as a human being, so I hope people keep an eye on that. The further into the series we get, the more serious the situation becomes on the human side, but Kumoko will bring the laughs even as she encounters danger. Be careful not to get whiplash from the difference in tone. (laughs)
