It's been hours since I stopped playing lightning returns and most of what was on my nerves is out of my head at this point. but I just started watching a ff7 rebirth stream VOD series and I am fucking SALIVATING over the different ways you can level your shit up and get stronger.
This game either has two ways to level - weapon upgrades and a new system called folios - or it has three if regular linear levelling is still a part of the gameplay on top of those two systems. I have no way to play Rebirth, but when I saw how folios worked? Something in my brain CLICKED.
And while it's faded a bunch since I stopped playing it, it's kind of like adding insult to injury with Lightning Returns - given that it's an RPG where you don't actually level your character and the stat boosts you do get are drip-fed to you, and the entire levelling system is based around drops from enemies rather than experience points gained from battle. I couldn't be more turned off by LR's levelling, but I'm straight up chomping at the bit about Rebirth's levelling. Holy shit, I'm losing so bad with this game. Jesus.

! SLOTS ! SLOTS ! SLOTS !
Smooth progress on the overall concept
I'm shifting this game to be a roguelike RPG, where you fight enemies with a slot machine. This is in a very early phase, I've mostly been struggling to get the layout correct. It needs a pretty big rework in terms of the visuals.
My current gameplay loop is something like:
Start each round by seeing a new enemy, and then have some options to modify the reels in your slot machine
Spin the wheel until you get combos related to attacking the enemy or defending yourself. You get money for each spin regardless!
If you land on a combo you like, you can choose to attack the enemy. If you run out of spins, you have to attack with the result of your last spin.
You attack the enemy, if they die, the round is over (you win)
The enemy attacks you, if you die, the game is over.
If you're both still alive, then go to the next turn, start spinning again!
That's about it, for now. I'm planning to add in some bad things to spin to, like a "skip turn" or a bankrupt slot.
Some earlier ideas
Here's some earlier ideas I was trying before
I went full circle! The first stab at enemies was building them into the slot machine display. I was running into issues with getting it to all fit on the screen nicely, its tough when its a tall vertical column. After this one, I tried breaking the enemy out into separate UI elements
Supporting multiple rounds (different enemies) and turns. The icons on the top were the total status effects and health. It wasn't very easy to read
Each player/enemy as a card that you can swap between
After struggling for a bit, I got some good feedback and reworked the health display to be more readable, and combined the enemy section back into the slot machine.
Some pinball machines have older lcd displays, which could be fun to try to recreate.
