Question to the ninjago experts

Was there any drama behind the scenes in Skybound or something like that?

The whole seasons has this first draft-y feeling to it. It couldn’t decide between a ninja famous plot line, a on the run story, and a pirate adventure. The season just doesn’t feel planned to me. (The most I can say is the hand thing and the final wish) It feels like no one had time to look it over and think about plot holes. (I know Ninjago has plot holes, but some I can just ignore because it builds to something I enjoy)☺️

A lot of ideas were picked up and then dropped a few episodes later. So, is there any info on the production of Skybound?

(I checked Brent Miller's channel but there wasn't much)

skybound Thoughts

sooo uh, im thinking about doing a rewrite of ninjago skybound.

im currently rewatching it because of this, and in case i never get around to actually writing anything, im gonna word-vomit onto this hellsite (affectionate) cuz im having Thoughts.

quick tangent though, skybound seems very similar to danny phantom (at least in how the fandom treats it) in the sense that, when you actually watch it, it's pretty tame and honestly kinda shit. but then you dig deeper. and you see the Implications and Possibilities, and suddenly it has you by the throat with all the ways this could have gone if it wasn't a kids show.

like, in skybound you get genuine torture and creepy implications on nadakhan's part (seriously, get away from jay and nya you fucking creep), and while it's never really explored since, y'know, kids show, it makes nadakhan one of the best and most terrifying villains i personally have watched in ninjago.

anyway, here are a couple of things i've been toying with in terms of a possible rewrite:

one thing im thinking about taking from various other fics i've seen (i think its mainly shown in bending but never breaking, which is an absolutely amazing fic and you should go read it but MIND THE TAGS AND TRIGGER WARNINGS PLEASE) is jay learning to use the electricity in his body, though obviously not painlessly

bonus points for his elemental power getting royally fucked up once/if the vengestone is removed, but in the sense of suddenly he is completely overwhelmed and his power is so much stronger and its a danger to both himself and others

queerplatonic jaya: i think in this season especially, nya felt very aroace coded (i might just be projecting as i myself am aroace, but that's the vibe i got) and so for a skybound rewrite nya and jay would have a serious conversation about how nya doesn't feel that way for anyone, even if she *does* really like jay

just general angst and torture

id rewrite jays obsession with nya, specifically his first wish (if i dont just jump right into him being on misfortunes keep)

i think id like to do something more with delara than just her being some dead girlfriend. i.e.: i'd make her fucking unhinged and the kind of person that would fall in love with and support nadakhan.

i really liked @cotidianoseeder's idea for canary!jay, so possibly something in that direction

i also really like it when people keep serpentine aspects in jays character, so some of that as well

fuck it, make him inhuman, y'know?

i'd age everyone up i think (i dunno how old they are in skybound, but a 17 minimum would be in my rewrite)

OH! i'd put bruiseshipping as a romantic relationship cuz i love them

nya would make the final wish, since a big part of her character would be forging her own story and taking control of her own life

zanes falcon would survive cuz i love that fucking bird

echo would be taken off the island post-rewind

what do y'all think??? i keep having more ideas, i might post them

Skybound AU????

okay this might sound crazy but like

what if jay dreamt skybound... let me explain

okay so like imagine jay dreams the ENTIRETY of skybound and when it ends, he wakes up. Hes obviously really confused and wonders if it was real even though it wasnt. He dreamt everything in VIVID detail and alll that. So a few months go by and he has completely disregarded the dream he had.

And then it happens.

Dareth shoots a series with them, the paparazzi. yaknow, how ep 1 started. Jay doesnt think anything of it at first and thinks its just a pure cooincidence.

But he slowly starts getting more and more confused and realizes that this is EXACTLY how his dream went. So he wonders whats reality and whats not and yaallalaala.

So he tries to change everygthing that happened, by making different decisions and stuff.

But the ending still stays the same, aka nya still somehow gets captured by nadakhan one way or antoher and the wedding stuff (BARFFFF ) baalaabal anyway

he does the same wish and stuff yadayadayada

anyway this isnt fully fleshed out yet!!!

but i am planning to make a fic on this!!!!!!!

Overthinking Ghost Cole...

I personally would've enjoyed more Cole Angst as a ghost. However, I think we got enough in Possession. We saw him be shocked and sad in the Temple on Haunted Hill. Next we see him deal with reality of the situation and grow to accept it. I think one more episode of being bummed out about not being human would've been nice. Specifically, before that mountain one. He does grow to accept his ghost-ness within the season. It felt a bit rushed to me, but I don't mind it too much. Cole isn't an angsty person. I think he'd adjust quickly, and he did. It would feel weird if he was moping for a while on what happened to him. He moped for a little bit, but was more concerned with the fact he can't help his friends the same way he used to. His arc is growing to accept he is still valuable even though he's a different now.

I think the main issue of ghost Cole is in Skybound. We never see him continue to deal with reality of being a ghost. We don't see him interact with his father, have issues on the film set, not much. We only have cool power up moments and some gags. (Which are great, I can be nice) Why can't Cole get a separate prison cell when they go to jail? Why does vengestone have to now apply to ghosts? Cole is no longer human, he's something else. He's something other. But in Skybound he's treated as a human, but he can go invisible occasionally. He can still eat food. Nothing is lost, he's better off as a ghost. You lose the feeling of sacrifice.

In Possession we see him jump around water (like when Nya uses her powers, when they fortify their base etc) We have lines which highlight his new change. (Borg saying he built the mech out of deepstone)

Now on Ghost Cole Angst. The only opportunity for ghost Cole angst in Skybound would’ve been from the other characters. Cole’s arc was about accepting his changes and coping with his new reality. Then loving himself again. In Skybound there’s nothing to cope with because he finished his arc. Lou or Lloyd are people who weren’t there with Cole much in season 5 and probably would have a lot of feelings about what happened. A side plot that Skybound could’ve had if we wanted to expand on Coles character is an outsider coming to terms with his transformation. It would’ve shown off Cole's growth and give characters with nothing to do something. (That’s why I suggested Lloyd)

This is just a big ask for a season that came out in 2016. As for what we got in canon, I think we’re just lucky he stayed a ghost in Skybound. The season was meant to focus on Jay, a character who got a backseat in previous seasons. I think this is one of the many issues of having a Jay focused season after a more ensemble focused one. All the other characters took a hit. Having more focus on Nya focused plot line outside of her romantic relationships would've been beneficial for her character. A lot of big changes were made to the story and the Ninja didn't get to recover much or still be affected. Lloyd's father died, he was more affected by this in Possession. Maybe Lloyd or someone from his family giving us a speech about Garmadon in the beginning. Hopefully not from Master Wu. We know his shit, he won't have anything new to the table. My mainpoint being Cole isn't the only one that got messed up in Skybound.

In summary, MY FAVES ANGST WAS SIDELINED IN SKYBOUND, SO NOW I'M SAD!

so that’s why I never mentioned the missed potential of ghost Cole in a post about Possession. It’s meant for a post about Skybound.

Tell me if you disagree with the take. This take is oddly not so controversial for me. (My drafts are mostly x is overrated) So agreeing with fellow members of the fandom or just sharing an idea is probably beneficial for my relationship to the Ninjago.

So for the Ship Bingo Ask Game thingamajig, let's start off with something simple and canon...

Jaya?

I have so many thoughts about this ship it isn’t funny. Like, it’s fine in season 6 and season 12. But in season 3 and 10, they are just a mess.

Now, I want to preface this by saying that most romances on screen are not something that I usually watch. I would rather read romance than watch a show on it.

I am willing to interact with the ship in fandom spaces. But I probably would just skip over it in the show.

For example, take “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” The whole plot of that is basically Jay and Nya going on a date to Mega Monster Amusement Park and Jay getting his true potential. It seems like a good idea, right? You appeal to the audience that wants Jaya while also keeping the ones who want character development and cool and flashy stuff engaged. It is the perfect formula.

I can’t stand this episode.

I have never been able to sit through this entire episode. I read the wiki summary for it, and watched almost half of it. But I almost always skip the actual date part. Just the interactions between Jay and Nya is just so awkward. Like I already have second hand embarrassment from basically everything that I watch. This was just so much embarrassment.

This is also an issue with Rebooted and March Of The Oni. I am so embarrassed during anything to do with Jaya in these two. Especially the proposal side plot in MOTO. Seriously, I was so confused by it. Like, yes it is a pivotal moment for their character development. But it distracts from the actual plot of the season and feels more like pandering. No offense if you like the amount of Jaya in either season, but it wasn’t executed the best.

But then you have Prime Empire and Skybound. They are both good seasons. Not my favorites, but still good. They use the same idea as “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” but improve on it. They both have a good bit of Jaya, but the overarching plot of each of them, especially with Prime Empire, means that I can engage with it. The Jaya in them, while it is prominent, is skippable and the creators made it so that it isn’t just thrown in there. Also, Jay and Nya do get character development separately and I love that.

Although I will admit that their relationship is probably better handled in the fandom space. Since the show writers need to have drama I guess, it took forever for Jay and Nya to actually have a conversation about their relationship in season 6. And then we basically get no Jaya content for 3 seasons and they propose.

Tl:Dr: I don’t hate Jaya, but I can and will analyze the heck out of it. Now if you excuse me, I need to go scream into my pillow.
