PLOT DROP: IT'S GOING DOWN
A solista Chungha cantava sua última música da setlist quando, às 21h20 em ponto, um grande estouro foi ouvido do alto do palco. O teto brilhou com uma cadeia de faíscas que desceu pelos fios e toda a iluminação e energia do bairro de Joyang-dong caiu de uma vez. Do show, sobrou apenas um agudo da cantora que ecoou no silêncio repentino da plateia antes enlouquecida.
O silêncio não durou mais que um minuto antes que a confusão generalizada se instaurasse. Começou com um ou outro estouro, até que as bombinhas usadas pelos Min se sobrepuseram, simulando o som de tiroteio intenso. Quando começou a correria, vieram os sinalizadores de fumaça que rapidamente preencheram o parque da Expo Tower.
Se aproveitando da correria às cegas e da confusão, o clã Yi aproveitou a oportunidade para vandalizar as barraquinhas do festival e o palco, quebrando instrumentos e equipamentos.
A cena toda parecia um ataque de guerra e era um lembrete do que aquela cidade era de verdade.

OHHH gosh yes i adore that 2014 outfit too! that’s one i always keep in my noko art reference rotation it was just such a look. i love pretty much all of their seifuku fits and character based looks, not a fashion thing exactly but noko eating their salad with scissors for a second during the kyoko stream was such a choice lol. they had this pink wig with pigtails and those super chunky hair ties during a livestream around like 2013 or so i thought was super cute but i can’t remember seeing it anywhere again after that outside of like one (1) selfie. also yesss the bandaid hair clip look!! when will we get a skc fashion retrospective catalogue or something that’d be so fun for a future skc anniversary. anyway thanks for answering <3

WAITING IS LEARNING
New beginnings are just few days away but I'm already filled with a lingering fear of missed opportunities and wasted resources. I understand it’s best to wait until shortly before the roster lock (March 2nd, 1:00 PM EST) and base my decisions on facts rather than hearsay; however, patience has never been my strong suit. So with that in mind, let's explore one of my favorite alternatives to waiting: tinkering.
Egalitarianism is the opening theme as we struggle to build a decent squad with a $100M budget. Assessing value is always important but it’s utterly critical going into a new season. Francois Rabelais once said, "Frugality is for the vulgar." If true, game week one makes vulgarians of all fantasy managers. Soon enough, team values will reach absurd levels, bolstered by the ability of clever players to work around whatever bizarro algorithm MLS settles on this year. But for now we're all the same. With that in mind, here are my budget picks for GW1:

Sporting Kansas City vs. Portland Timbers: Who has the better midfield?

And then there were four. It’s time to get hyped for the Conference Championships, with the first legs kicking off Sunday, Nov. 25. Over the next week, we’re diving deep into New York Red Bulls vs. Atlanta United and Sporting KC vs. Portland Timbers to see where each side can find an edge in their matchup. With the help of columnists Matt Doyle and Bobby Warshaw, we’re parsing all facets of both Conference Championship clashes, one day at a time. On Wednesday, we started with the goalkeepers, yesterday we discussed defenders, and today, we continue with the midfield.
Who will win the midfield between Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers in the Western Conference Championship? It’s a tight call.
The midfielders are the most important pieces to the Timbers’ side, while SKC have used their engine room to control the game with death by possession.
SKC has lined up in their traditional 4-3-3, though with less pressing and more possession this season. A triumvirate of Ilie Sanchez, Felipe Gutierrez and Roger Espinoza hold down the center of the park. The trio is tasked with controlling the tempo of the match, as they’ve done so well this season, helping lead the team to a fantastic offensive season.
On the other side, it’s a tale of two Diegos: Valeri and Chara. The former was tied for the team lead in goals (10) and led the team in assists (12) just a season removed from winning the 2017 Landon Donovan MLS MVP, while the Timbers hardly earn results when the latter isn’t in the starting XI. Next to Valeri in an attacking position out of the midfield is Sebastian Blanco, who also notched a double-double in 2018 (10 goals and 11 assists.) Their plan is well defined and executed; from the midfield is how the Timbers win games.
The last time the two sides faced each other, SKC overran the Timbers, 3-0, holding 63 percent possession and outshot the visitors 25-7. Chara was notably an unused substitute that day.
Let’s see which set of midfielders our experts fancy . . .
DOYLE VERDICT:
Ilie, Gutierrez and Espinoza are all high-level pieces and have all played like it at times throughout this season with the ball. They can be devastating. But I still have major questions about their ability without the ball, as they’ve been gappy and frankly a little bit soft defensively (just think of minutes 30 through 90 of the second leg vs. RSL) at really inopportune times. On the wings, they have a ton of firepower, though it sometimes comes at the expense of their defensive shape.
Valeri is arguably the best No. 10 of this decade and Chara is arguably the best d-mid/box-to-box mid of this decade. David Guzman has been serviceable or better lately and Blanco has been a match-winner. Portland don’t have the depth that SKC boast, but Valeri and Chara are probably the two best players in this series.
Hard to ignore that, ain’t it?
WARSHAW VERDICT:
Sporting KC
Matt’s right, Chara and Valeri are the two best players in the series; I don’t have any problem with his logic. But, also, Espinoza is one of the best five (or even three?) midfielders in the league in the last decade, Gutierrez has 34 caps for Chile, and Ilie was a 2018 All-Star. Portland have the edge on talent, but not by an unreachable amount.
When a possession team (SKC) plays a counterattacking team (Portland), it generally becomes a matter of who blinks first. Who makes the first mistake? The counterattacking team is at the disposal of the passing team and must wait until the passing team falters. As great as Valeri and Chara are, the team is set up in a reactive manner.
I don’t think SKC will make the requisite mistakes. Vermes is a good coach and Ilie/Guitierrez/Espinoza are all veterans who understand how this works; they will be very careful and methodical with their passes.
Perhaps it’s the romantic in me that believes passing can outwit rigid defending, but I like SKC to win the midfield contest in this one.

EVENTO: CHARITY DINNER
Bem como todos os outros líderes Min que a antecederam, Min Eunyoung mantém o hábito de promover eventos de caridade desde muito antes do começo de sua carreira política. Que grande mulher nossa prefeita, não? Coração de ouro! Uma vida de preocupação com os menos afortunados, os enfermos, os animais de rua e qualquer minoria desprivilegiada que esteja rendendo mídia no momento.
O evento da vez é um baile de gala e leilão, cujos lucros com ingressos e vendas irão diretamente para as crianças órfãs do Orfanato Municipal de Sokcho – e para a conta da prefeita em algum paraíso fiscal, mas só alguns seletos Min sabem dessa informação.
Os ingressos custarão ₩50,000 para membros do clã Min e público geral e ₩60,000 para membros dos clãs Seo e Yi. É de bom tom que todos participem deste evento em prol dos órfãos da cidade, portanto o preço mais salgado certamente não será um problema.
Além da boa música e dança, os participantes da festa terão acesso ainda a champagne à vontade e uma variedade de bebidas de luxo, bem como uma mesa farta de frios e aperitivos e outra de doces, com direito a fonte de chocolate.

Às vezes, Yerin se pegava sonhando acordada em uma realidade onde ela havia nascido em outra família. Mais especificamente, em uma onde era uma Min. Não uma Min qualquer, mas a filha de Min Eunyoung, sua maior inspiração. Heroína, até. E não só da Kwon mais nova, como de sua família inteira.
Ela não tem a memória da época em que a (ainda não) prefeita colocou seu pai e sua mãe dentro de casa e os deu onde trabalhar, como sustentar a filha que viria em poucos meses e um sentido para a vida miserável que sempre levaram. Tinham sorte de Eunyoung ter se apegado tanto a Minah, sua mãe, que rapidamente se tornou uma das melhores amigas da Min que também alavancou a carreira política do patriarca da família.
Não demorou para que o único fruto do casal se envolvesse com as tarefas do clã. Yerin ainda era uma criança quando teve as primeiras aulas de taekwondo e suas primeiras obrigações com os Min. Eram coisas pequenas, como entregar recados e ajudar na cozinha, mas se inseriu rápido no meio dos originais, ao mesmo tempo que se apegava às outras crianças, desejava tomar o lugar delas. Por isso, se dispunha a literalmente qualquer coisa. Qualquer tarefa que os outros recusariam, ela aceitava. Independente do que fosse. Não se importava do trabalho sujo que fazia desde adolescente, tampouco de todas as artimanhas que aprendeu para ser eficaz, porque tinha um objetivo e, mais que isso, uma dívida.
Sabia ser vista como puxa saco e sanguessuga, mas na real que nem se importava. A única pessoa que precisava ter certeza de sua lealdade tinha e era nisso que se apegava. Já é secretária de Eunyoung há anos e tem muito potencial para um cargo maior, mas continua na mesma posição porque acredita ser a melhor para ela. E, assim, Yerin aprende todos os dias tudo que precisa para suceder naquela vida e, com um pouco de sorte, se tornar uma Min também.
