Just saw perhaps the best football match I've ever gotten to watch first-hand, and certainly the best match in the history of Major League Soccer.
The MLS Cup Final just does that to you, because before this match, last year's MLS Cup Final was probably the best match I'd ever seen.
It ended 3-3 AET, with LAFC defeating Philadelphia Union 3-0 on penalties. There were three go-ahead goals, each of them followed by the opposing team scoring an equalizer. No team led by more than a single goal all day. LAFC's Gareth Bale scored the latest goal in MLS history in the 128th minute to make it 3-3, breaking the previous record held by...Union's Jack Elliot, who had just scored in the 124th minute to give the Union a short-lived 3-2 lead.
What a match, what a playoffs, what a season. If you're a football fan and you aren't paying attention to the game in the US & Canada, I highly recommend you look into MLS next season. Because trust me, as someone who followed this league closely from all the way back in May until now, things like this are almost destined to happen. MLS is among the most competitive, evenly-matched leagues in the world. And watching it all unfold in real time over the past several months has been an incredible ride.
And congrats to The Los Angeles Football Club! I had predicted that Philadelphia Union would win the Cup back before the playoffs even started, but you know what? On this day, LAFC did what they had done all year, and proved they're the best soccer team in the US & Canada, and now have two trophies to show for it.
