Incidental Tinies

A g/t concept we all use (mostly in daydreams) but rarely discuss!

G/t is kinda unique in that it can tell any story it wants and still fit the trope. Even if that story is mainly happening to someone else!

You can have a huge epic story with an ensemble cast of 30+ characters...But the entire story is told from the perspective of a tiny that they happened to pick up along the way!

This tiny may not actually... do anything in the plot/story. Their entire contribution to the epic world-saving quest could just be moral support. Maybe they act as a "therapy tiny" helping the others through their panic attacks and PTSD or simply acting as a stim. Regardless, the main cast of characters adore their tiny friend. Even if they get totally left out of serious plot-heavy moments.

This means that you can have all of the soft, fluffy interactions without trying to revolve the entire story around size stuff. And by telling it from the perspective of a tiny, you ensure that all interactions are still g/t (even if the conversation and drama is about humans)

You may be thinking "That seems really specific, I don't think we all use this trope. You're exaggerating"

...Okay but have you ever added a borrower OC to an existing story like Fire Emblem or Genshin Impact? Hell, it doesn't even need to be an OC. Just take any beloved side character or NPC that doesn't do much in the source material, shrink 'em down and have them ride along for original plot! You've probably created an "incidental tiny" without really thinking about it!

But the dynamic should absolutely be discussed and explored!! I think there are three main reasons it works so well:

A tiny can be a proxy for home: If the heroes go into a dangerous situation, they likely won't willingly bring the tiny. But now they have a helpless little friend waiting back at the camp/base for everyone! And if their day isn't dangerous, just stressful? A character might come back, kick off their shoes, and start petting the tiny to themselves calm down.

It leads to size-angst as a B-Plot: Sure, the main story may be about a band of misfits trying to solve some problem. But if the tiny doesn't play an active role? They might start to feel useless. Because when things get serious? all they can do is watch... Or maybe the tiny gets hurt! And one of the main characters becomes very overprotective! To the point where they try to control or cage the tiny for their safety. Or what if the heroes realize that the tiny is actually in more danger with them, than they would be out in the wild? There are so many ideas to explore and the Tiny's lack of agency only enhances them, not detracts. Of course, this angst would happen alongside the main story (and likely at the worst possible time)

It's just easier to write: I love g/t fics, and there are many incredible fics where the entire story comes from the size dynamic. But I think we can all agree: it's much easier to write an engaging story if you have another, more flexible, plot that you can shift over to when the story needs conflict and intrigue. In the case of "incidental tinies"? You have the main plot, then the slice-of-life and/or size-angst.

Sorry for the long post, but I feel like this is one of those g/t tropes everyone knows about, but no one every talks about.

Could be useful if we ever need to pass time. Otherwise, I don't see us getting much out of this one.

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Gendarmerie! You found me." The young man on the balcony gives you a bright smile, before taking another drag from his cigarette.

CONCEPTUALIZATION [Medium: Success] - His slender figure is backlit by city lights, its distant streets and motorways flashing like diamonds...

EMPATHY [Medium: Success] - It feels like a Friday. He seems to be in a good mood tonight.

"We got your hint. Found the key right under that stone."

[Leave.]

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Beautiful," he replies, smiling. As he looks at you, something sparkles in his eyes.

"So tell me, are you here to make things *right* again?"

"That's what I'm aiming for, yes."

"Honestly I'm just trying to not screw anything up."

"I'm not going to make things just *right*, I'm going to make them *spectacular*."

(Ignore his question.) "I was hoping to talk to a possible witness. Your balcony overlooks the murder scene."

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Beautiful," he says again. A nearby street lamp casts shadows on his chin, drawing out the slender cheekbones.

"I have some good news for you. My Sunday friend is visiting me tonight. I told him about you and he'd like to say hello. Step in, he's already waiting." He nods towards door #28.

"By the way, I'm really digging the view here." (Point to the city skyline.)

"Is it Friday tonight? It feels like Friday."

"Why would I want to meet your friend?"

"Very well, I'll talk to him, but first I want to talk to *you*. I have so many questions." (Proceed.)

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Mhmh, that's why I chose this place." He looks away, his cigarette end glowing in the dark. "Martinaise is special, isn't it?"

KIM KITSURAGI - "Wait, suddenly you're *digging* things?" the lieutenant whispers to you, shaking his head.

2. "Is it Friday tonight? It feels like Friday."

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Yeah, it does feel like the end of the week. Such gentle weather..."

"Even the rain feels nice." He leans over the railing and sticks out his hand to feel the rain.

3. "Why would I want to meet your friend?"

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Trust me, you do."

4. "Very well, I'll talk to him, but first I want to talk to *you*. I have so many questions." (Proceed.)

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "That's nice, but I don't have anything to tell you. It's my friend you're looking for, not me."

He takes another drag of his unfiltered cigarette and looks around. It's getting dark and the neighbouring windows have lit up one by one.

PERCEPTION (SIGHT) [Medium: Success] - Downstairs a cat crosses the yard, disappearing into the bush.

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Besides, I've got to run."

INLAND EMPIRE [Easy: Success] - He's going to leave you alone again. That's sad.

COMPOSURE [Medium: Success] - Something tells you you're never going to talk to an individual this cool or mysterious ever again.

"Run where?"

"But I just *found* you again!"

"Go, if you must, I don't care. I don't care about people leaving me all the time."

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "Just look at it..." He gestures towards distant motorways, all leading to golden La Delta. "It's a beautiful night. Who's going to stay in on a night like this?"

"Only if you promise that we'll talk again. It's *important*."

"Alright, go then."

KIM KITSURAGI - Something flutters in the corner of the lieutenant's mouth as you're saying those words.

EMPATHY [Formidable: Success] - It's laughter!

SMOKER ON THE BALCONY - "We'll talk," the smoker assures you, brushing his hand through the hair. "Just not tonight."

"Take care, alright?" he says with another disarming smile, before slipping off into the night.

- Cassie wasn’t into girls.  Not that she was totally repulsed by them, it’s just that she always saw herself in the strong arms of a hyper masculine man, someone that could take care of her and support her in life.  She’s dated guys in the past, but ever since her messy break up with Mckay, she found herself single for the first time ever, as Maddy said.  But she would never for once in her life dream of someone of the same sex, let alone renowned figure skater y/n no no, because that just wouldn’t make sense.  Could it?

- The first time you caught Cassie’s eye was when all her friends were talking about the figure skater that came to the weekend party and just how well you do on the ice.  “She’s literally a swan and I aspire to be her.” Maddie says as everyone looks at her phone, “See did you see that?  She’s fucking amazing.”

- At first, with how much everyone was hyping you up, Cassie labeled the burning sensation in her chest as a raging jealousy.  How could someone like you just show up out of the blue and take something Cassie loved and was good at?  You couldn’t possibly be better than her.  In fact, her dad who got her into ice skating in the first place told her no one was better than her.  And she believed that.

- That was until she saw a recording of your last performance to a classy, instrumental piece that not only enhanced your skating movements, but your beauty. 

- Of course, she was stunned and too starstruck to say anything but little gasps of disbelief; One thing was for sure though, she had to see you on the ice herself.  And that she did.

- There was just something so off about you, not off, but so right that it felt so wrong to Cassie.  Almost like she wanted to be you and she was mad at the fact she isn’t you.

- Cassie packed a bag and go to your ice rink after school and pretend to want to skate.  But she didn’t have the money, and her mom didn’t care enough to give her any, so she just sat on the bench and waited for you to get there.  Thankfully, it was packed well enough so that she wouldn’t be seen as suspicious, but still, it felt weird that Cassie was so determined to see you in action.  Like she didn’t believe that someone could look so divine in a leotard and metal skates. 

- When you finally show up, Cassie immediately stares at you.  For a moment, she’s full of relief but at the same time she finds her hands starting to sweat and her throat starting to close up.  Surely, this is still jealousy. 

- The second you lace up your shoes — your pristine, white shoes — and head out on the ice, is the same second that Cassie is unable to look away.  She questions everything you do, probably because she’s not as advanced as you are in your craft, like how it’s possible to do jump up and spin like that or how it’s possible to twirl for so long.  She’s in awe.

- When you’re done practicing, it’s already well past 4 hours and it finally sinks in that Cassie has been there the entire time, hypnotized by the way your hair swings around and how the corners of your lips curl up into a soft smile as the cold air hits your cheeks. 

- That’s when you notice a sort of familiar blonde face, sitting on the furthest bench from the railings, staring at you. 

- “Hey,” you wave as you glide to the exit of the rink, “You’re Cassie, right?” Holy fucking shit she fucking knows who I am— “Mhm, yeah.  You’re y/n?”

“Yep.” You smile, “What're you doing here?”

“I...skate.”

“You skate? No way! I thought you just did cheer?”

“I do both, well, I haven’t skated in a few months, I’m a little rusty.  I wanted to practice today or at least get back on the ice.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Of course she can’t say the real reason, “I packed my sisters skates, instead of mine. You know, different shoe sizes.” Nice save, Cassie.

“I hate when that happens, I grab my cousin’s all the time.  Hey but, it’s late and I was actually going to grab dinner from like Panera or something, did you want to come along?  I know someone there and I could actually get our whole meal for free.” You laugh. 

Yeah, jealousy, “Sure, I-I’d love to.  Let me just text my mom real quick.”

Your toes curled, as your body tensed, exploding with intense pleasure coursing through your veins. Your vision turned white, forcing you to see stars.

Steve finally released his climax, shuddering against you, before he finally rolled off to the side and collapsed next to you. The two of you laid there trying to catch your breath.

Sweat clung to you like second skin, soaking through the cotton t-shirt you were currently wearing. You squeezed your legs together, trying to alleviate the aftershocks of your orgasm, the sensations still running through your system.

“You alright?” Steve breathed, looking over at you.

“I’m getting there.” You giggled softly with your eyes closed, as you began to feel your body grow heavy with exhaustion. “Talk about a homecoming.”

You heard Steve chuckle deeply, before feeling him grab your hand. You opened your eyes just in time to see him place a soft kiss to the back of it, and then lay it against his bare chest, that was coated with a light sheen of sweat.

You and Steve had been living together for almost two years now in that brownstone in Brooklyn, and your relationship was as normal as it could be for a former SHIELD agent turned Avenger and your super soldier enhanced boyfriend.

Since Ultron, business had almost seemed to slow down a bit. The Avengers were being called on less, and things were fairly quiet at the moment. You all still had your missions both together and separate; Steve being on the hunt for Brock Rumlow and you were taking on smaller, home base missions since your secret search for the Winter Soldier went cold. Although you two spent time apart, it did make the coming home amazing. Not to mention that sex with a super enhanced partner was out of this fucking world.

You and Steve were getting a hang of this whole relationship thing. You had dated quite a few guys in the past, but no one like Steve. He was still old school when it came to courting you. He’d never show up without bringing you fresh lilies; your favorite flower. He would show you around Brooklyn; the places he used to go to when he was a boy. Or he’d just take you on his motorcycle across the Brooklyn Bridge at night to watch the stars. He was the perfect gentleman.

Steve was actually the first guy you really felt this deeply for, that it kind of scared you at times. Although things were definitely going better than you could imagine so far, it hadn’t stopped you from waiting for the other shoe to drop.

There were things about Steve’s past that he still refused to share with you, and that’s what worried you the most.

And speaking of your super soldier...

You watched him through hooded eyelids, as he pulled on his boxer briefs and stood from your king sized bed.

”Going somewhere?” You questioned, still trying to catch your breath, feeling the edges of your brand new relaxed hair, start to curl again.

Steve was now making his way around your bedroom, shoving things into a duffel bag.

“I have to catch a flight in a couple of hours.”

You quickly sat up, looking at your boyfriend confused. “Wait? You’re leaving again?”

“Yeah,” he tossed the bag on the bed, explaining, “I’ll be back in like a day or two.”

“Steve, you just got back last night. Is it another mission? Avenger stuff?” You rambled, trying to figure out why your boyfriend would be leaving after not even spending a full 24 hours at home with you.

Steve shook his head, throwing a few more items into the duffel and zipped it up. “No, this is something a little personal.”

And now you were really confused. “Personal?” You waited a bit, allowing him to elaborate on this personal business he had, but after nearly 20 seconds of dead silence you knew he wasn’t going to explain further. So, you thought you’d coax him yourself. “You care to share with the rest of the class?”

He chuckled, walking over to you and kissing your temple. “Trust me, doll, this is something you don’t want to know about.”

And that didn’t settle well with you.

You watched as he made his way over to your master bathroom, before stopping in his tracks. His shoulders slumped, and he then turned to face you, leaning against the frame of the bathroom door. He had a look of guilt across his face.

What could he be feeling guilty about?

“Come with me.” He offered.

You blinked several times, making sure you heard what you heard. “What?”

“Come with me tonight. It’s better that I show you anyway.” He sounded so sincere, but you weren’t sure what your answer would be. “So, whadda you say?” He reached his hand out toward you.

You took in a deep breath, contemplating on what you should do. But the answer came to you quickly, as you reluctantly stood to your feet and walked over to him. He smiled softly, pulling you into his arms and kissing your lips, before the two of you walked into the bathroom together.

Holding your shaking hand, Steve walked you into what you now knew was a hospice located in Washington, DC. You kept trying to rack your brain about this personal business Steve had until the moment you stepped through the door.

It was the other shoe, and it dropped hard.

You had never mentioned it, even after your father insisted that you should. You tried to justify that you could live your life without it ever being brought up ever again. Or you always believe that if Steve brought it up, that he would tell you in his own way. But it never happened, and it also never stopped it from burning a hole in your mind from time to time.

“Wait here.” Steve told you, as the two of you stopped outside of a room. He gave your hand a small squeeze, leaning down to kiss your cheek.

All you could do was nod, watching him walk into the room. You leaned up against the wall, to keep your legs from going out and to possibly eavesdrop.

“...and how’s my best girl doing?”

The words you heard Steve utter on the other side of the wall, cut through you like a knife. You knew they shouldn’t have, but they did.

You could barely hear anyone in the room other than Steve’s voice.

“...there’s someone I want you to meet. She’s real special to me.”

Was the last thing you heard when Steve appeared at the doorway, eyes shining down at you. He grabbed your hand in his, once more, giving it another squeeze. You wanted to run at this moment, because you knew exactly what was going to happen, but your legs reluctantly betrayed you, and you started following your boyfriend.

When you walked into the room, and Steve stepped out of the way, you finally saw her.

She was weak and frail, but the woman you knew so little of was beautiful and strong. She was the first woman to ever defy the odds of being the first woman SHIELD agent. She paved the way for women like you, your mom, Nat, and Agent Hill.

Her eyes were the most familiar. No matter how much she had aged over the years, physically, her eyes were still the same. Dark, mysterious, and full of hope. Those eyes had been haunting you ever since you and Steve nearly got blown to smithereens by corrupt SHIELD agents, nearly four years ago.

Those eyes belonged to none other than Margaret Carter, or so you knew her as Agent Peggy Carter.

A woman who’s memory you had been afraid of for years.

Only she wasn’t a memory.

She was here.

Right now.

In the present.

Staring back at you.

“Y/N, this is Peggy. Peggy, this is Y/N, my girlfriend.” Steve said, introducing the two of you.

You smiled shyly, giving the elderly woman in front of you a wave. While on the inside you were dying.

“Oh, Steven, she’s beautiful.” Peggy managed to muster out in her current state.

“I told you.” Steve smiled, placing his hand on your lower back.

“Come.” She was barely able to lift her hand to beckon you over. “Come, sit. A bit of a girl’s chat, yeah?”

Again, all you could do was nod, as Steve guided you to a vacant chair next to Peggy’s bed. A chair that you knew that Steve had occupied before.

To say you were nervous was an understatement. Here you were sitting next to the woman of whom the man you love, had loved, or still loved. You weren’t quite sure of that anymore.

Steve explained to you about her growing Alzheimers, which was now beginning to worsen with each passing day. She remembered Steve, but five minutes into the conversation, she would be shocked and surprised to see that he made it out of the ice alive. He had to explain to her who you were, and each time she took you with kindness. No bitterness or resentment. She would comment every single time that Steve looked happy with you, and you had a certain glow that she couldn’t quite put her finger on.

Then, five minutes later, like an eraser to a chalkboard, her mind would be wiped clean.

“So,” Steve began nervously, hands shoved into his pockets.

You both were now standing outside the facility, as visiting hours were over.

You didn’t know how you were going to handle this conversation. You were both upset and relieved. Relieved that Steve finally opened up about Peggy, but upset that it took him this long and hadn’t even bothered to tell you she was at least alive in the first place.

“How long’ve you been coming here?”

He looked off to the side, avoiding eye contact with you. “Since I found out she was still alive.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Honestly?” He finally looked at you. “I wasn’t sure how you’d react. Every time’s Peggy’s name was mentioned, in any capacity, I could see how it would hurt you, and I didn’t want you to go through that.”

You folded your arms, across your chest. “I’m a big girl, Steve. You should have told me. I had to hear it from my father.”

His head snapped back, looking at you surprised. “Your father? Fury told you? When?”

“When I woke up, after Ultron.”

Now his hands were placed on his hips. “You mean to tell me that you’ve known for almost two years, and you didn’t say anything?”

“You’ve known longer than that and you never said shit to me.” You argued back. It was the audacity of him that had you reeling right now. “For the last two years, I have been patiently waiting for you to come clean, Steve. Why now?”

Steve waited a few seconds, sighing, and looking down at his shuffling feet. “She’s dying. They told me she doesn’t have much longer to go.”

You didn’t know why, but that made you even more angry. He waited until the possibility of Peggy’s death to tell you that she was even alive. You couldn’t deal with this. At least not right now.

“I’m sorry, Steve,” this time it was you who tried to avoid Steve’s gaze, “but I need to be alone right now to process all of this.” You immediately turned and started walking away from him, ignoring his calls, as the tears fell from your eyes.

Massive, massive kudos to Olena's stylist (or herself, if she decided the styling). Because it was perfection.

The colour was so beautiful and actually was unique since the other ladies wore similiar colours. So Olena's dress was a breath of fresh air and someting new.

Also the cut. The cut! The dress fitted her perfectly. Hugging her curves in all the right places. Flowing on her body. The perfect length. Also the coat added a nice touch.

Love the fact that the outfit was so feminie but she brought in a bit of her woman boss attitude with the upper part of the coat.

And the styling! The subtle pearls were perfect and went so well with the tone of her shoes. Choosing shoes with a pointed shoe tip was actually a brave devision (usually you would wear round shoe tips since she had a lot of round things in her styling - the jewellery, the hip details on the coat, the neckline of the dress...) but it worked so well and gave the dress a little special something.

I love that she didn't wear a hat or head piece. No matter what she would have choosen - it would have destroyed the look. Styling the hair open (yes! perfect!) and in small waves was an awesome decision. (And love to the person who gave a her either a more blone coloring or a fresh up before traveling to London. The lighter / fresher hair colour was amazing and fitted so well with the styling.) It went so well with the neutral and subtle make up. Also thank god that she didn't have a hand bag. A hand bag in the wrong size or shape could have also destroyed the look.

That look was perfect from start to finish. It was understatement but perfectly done. And nevertheless elegant, classy, modern, feminie, strong and enhancing her beauty all at the same time.

Title: Retro Roller

I named my piece “Retro Roller” after being inspired by 1960’s and 70’s fashion trends. The Roller-Skate is an icon of fun in it’s essence and it expresses a certain philosophy that I try to live by. Things should be fun, especially art. I chose to break the skate up into parts; the shoe, the trucks, the wheel, and the tongue. Overall I believe the project was a success. I love that I was able to put my own spin on it as far as the design goes. It does feel a bit gimmicky to me. If i had more time I would’ve loved to make smaller flowers or not use flowers at all.I really wanted to go for a more art nouveau style the mades up the psychedelic vibes of the late 60’s and 70’s.

Five things that I feel enhance my work would be the stylized flower design, the clean lines to make it look like an obvious skate, the choice of the zig-zag tongue design which I was going to originally leave out, the simplification of the trucks and other complex structures of the skate itself, and the attention to the knots to make the entire piece look aesthetically pleasing. I used a combination of both double twisted and single wire to give more dimension to the lines seen. While making finishing touches to the piece I had to leave out certain structures like shoe strings and a toe stopper in order to keep the piece from looking too busy.

Five things that could be improved on would be the structure of my wheels first. With more time I could've thought of my more interesting design or I coulee added a functional element to the work, making the wheels spin. I’m not an engineer but it would’ve been a cool addition.It was also hard enough getting the wheels to be circular or sit flat once I had finished creating the trucks. I also would have designed my wheels to look more full if I had more time to work on this. The flower designs are cool to me but how I imagined it is differently than how it turned out.

The most challenging part of the project was creating the wheels and trucks. The actually skate itself had a complex design for tucks.. It’s three dimensional and has all sort of curves and cuts to be a functional skate.Since I was just making a model there was no need to replicate it exactly so I did have to simplify a lot. And with the simplification I sort of had to design my own truck. A lot of it was improved as I went. I just wanted it to look like a skate as much as possible. They took the most time and were very different to imagine coming together. Also believe it or not the flowers were a lot more difficult to create than I had originally imagined. I used a few different processes to try to make all the petals the same size and shape; most of which involved wrapping wire around different home objects to see which one would give me the best curve. (it was my T-tool in the end)

If I had to do this project again I would spend more time actually designing my trucks instead of improvising after I had gotten the minimum measurements. Of  course time was a big issue for me as well. I would've lover to make a functional wheel and I don’t think it would've been too difficult if I would've taken the proper time to understand how such a wheel would work. Also like I mentioned earlier in the critique is the design. Though I’m proud of how it came out, I would’ve liked a design more relevant to art history that would maybe connect with a wider audience. I think the design is borderline cheesy and commercial. From this project I learned how much I enjoy using my hands to create things. I’ve always enjoyed getting down and dirty and it’s so interesting to me see an idea in my head come to life in the physical. I think that my be my favorite part about art in general but I’m always amazed end the end. I’ve also learned the importance of process and planning and documentation.

I feel as if I deserve a successful grade. My work could’ve been cleaner especially if I payed more attention to details. I do think I got it done though. I made sure it was the correct size and material. I could've utilized my time more effectively sure, but I did not turn in an unfinished piece. My knots were clean for the most part and I also filled otherwise empty space with an interesting and eye capturing design that would if anything make the viewer look at my work for that much longer. I also think the connection with the retro vibe of the skate adds an extra layer to the work, a historical narrative almost which was done intentionally. Because I chose a unique object and saw the vision through to the end, I think I deserve an A.
