Silly Little Surprise
Synopsis: you surprise anne at work
Pairing: Anne Boleyn x fem!reader
Words: 3.8k+
A/N - trying my hand at six the musical fanfiction. still conflicted about writing about historical figures but here we are. I'm still working on my katherine one - shot so for now have a little boleyn. this is just simple and sweet, nothing heavy
It is cold. very cold. the night air pricks violently at your skin as you linger outside the theatre. should you go through the front or try stage door? you watch people heading through the sliding doors get stopped by meet and greet. you don't have a ticket for the show so that option seemed out but they also wouldn't just let you through the back either... you try calling her. it rings, and rings, and rings. no answer. steam rises into the frosty air as you huff out a sigh. she also seemed to be ignoring your texts from twenty minutes ago. that girl loves her phone so she must be busy but still. it's a last-ditch attempt as you abruptly approach someone about to head through stage door. you tell them you know one of the stars; you almost immediately regret it. they probably think you're some crazy stalker. she had mentioned fans who claim to know her just because she's responded to a comment or dm on Instagram. maybe this was a bad idea? it's another ten minutes of awkward waiting around until you hear her voice.
"heard there was a weirdo out here claiming to know me," you turn sharply to spy none other than anne boleyn standing in the doorway. she wore an almost curious look as if she had been expecting someone else. dressed in a loose-fitting robe that can't be providing much warmth, a sports bra, and joggers; her hair in tight space buns. "they almost set security on you, still might."
you can't tell if she's joking or not so you just provide her with a pitiful chuckle as you step closer. there's always such a playful spark in her eye, you admire it but it can also be really annoying; especially when you're freezing. "I promise I'm not here to kidnap you," you insist, offering a smile. "I brought food."
"for me?" a curious raise of her brow, Anne steps aside to allow passage into the theatre. "I guess you can come inside then."
"How kind of you to let me in almost half an hour after I messaged you." you hum dryly, sliding past and into the warmth of the theatre. you had never actually been here before. there was a set of stairs to your right immediately as you walk in and a small booth that currently housed a member of staff. they were on the phone with somebody who seemed to be arguing about tickets or something. then there was just a long, narrow corridor leading deeper into the building. you always imagined it to be nicer inside the theatre, then again you were back of house.
"my bad, I should have stopped the entire show just to check my phone in case you called." Anne bites back but you sense no ill will. again, it's sometimes a little hard to tell. "I thought you were busy tonight. you said, and I quote, don't be ridiculous Anne, I am much too busy to go to your silly little show."
"well that's not what I said at all now is it?"
"it's what my heart heard." a hand is placed over where her heart would be. "and it's never wrong."
"It's very much wrong right now though."
"nope," she declares loudly, shaking her head. "never. you did tell me you were busy."
"yeah," it hadn't been the first time Anne had invited you to the show. she has always been so eager for you to see her perform live. at this point, she was basically inviting you at least once a week but it had never come to fruition. this was the first time visiting her at work and you didn't have a ticket. you tried buying one before turning up this evening but the website said it was sold out. "but I didn't call it silly."
"It's totally what you said," such a playful tone that you really don't appreciate anymore. "silly little show, that you never want to see ever."
"Anne," you huff softly.
"geez, you're so grumpy today." she continues to tease but her smile fades when she realises you're no longer joining in. "I honestly didn't see your messages until after the show, then I heard there's a crazy fan at stage door asking about me and put two and two together. I wasn't expecting you so."
you really shouldn't be mad at her. it was kind of your own fault for not remembering the times; you knew it was a two-show day. "it's fine," you shrug a little. "it was a dumb idea- I just wanted to surprise you but clearly my timing was a little off."
"It wasn't dumb." Anne replies quickly, "I was so excited when I figured it out, I practically ran here." an almost tender moment is immediately ruined by a gust of cold air as the door behind you flings open. a member of staff awkwardly shuffled past the two of you who are still lingering at stage door and proceeded down the hallway. "you should probably sign in."
"do I need to if I'm just visiting?"
Anne shrugs. "it's for health and safety in case the building like burns down. I figured since your back here they'd wanna know." you're presented with a touch screen with multiple options. you weren't staff or cast so of course, visitor made the most sense. you then had to fill in your name and who you were visiting before posing for a picture. out comes a visitor sticker with your face on as well as Anne pulling a face behind you. and with that done, she takes your hand and begins the journey through the hallowed halls of the theatre. "your hands are freezing."
"might surprise you but it's the middle of winter so it's cold outside."
"why didn't you just wait out front?"
"I don't know. they were checking tickets and I didn't have one so I didn't wanna go through the embarrassment." you explain. "if I said I was just here for you, they'd think I was a stalker or something."
"they think that anyway," the girl chuckles to herself. "at least you would have been warmer."
"or they would have had security escort me away," you defend your decision but she was very much right.
"that would have been funny though."
"for you maybe,"
"I have another gown in my dressing room if you want it. it's fluffy so it'll keep you nice and toasty," Anne suggests. she's leading you somewhere which you now assume is her dressing room.
"When is your next show?"
"We're on a break for lunch so I have time for a little tour," she glances back at you. "you can say no."
"uh, sure then," you reply. "I'll take anything that'll warm me up at this point, I think I have hypothermia."
"so dramatic," the other teases. you have never really thought about how intricate the back of a theatre could be but this place was like a maze of constant corridors and stairs. there were like a million doors against each wall and most didn't seem to be labeled. mysterious. eventually, you reach a door that sports a sign with the show logo on it; you just manage to catch Anne's name but not the other two before the door is pushed open. "welcome to my humble abode." it's not a relatively large space considering it was housing at least three people. there were multiple vanities against the walls with mirrors. each was decorated with various knickknacks and personal items. it gave quite a homely feel despite it being a dressing room.
"Have you ever heard of knocking?" the voice is unexpected but there is someone sitting in the corner staring at a phone.
"It's nothing I haven't seen before," Anne waves a dismissive hand. "I think I left my hoodie around here somewhere or would you prefer the dressing gown?"
you aren't really fussy but she doesn't give you long to decide before tossing a dressing gown at you. you just manage to catch it. "thank you."
"Are you gonna introduce us Anne or pretend I don't exist?"
"I didn't know you weren't capable of saying your own name anymore."
you decide to just take the lead and introduce yourself with a small wave and a matching smile. you come to find out they're the swing for the show; which Anne proceeds to explain as if you don't understand the concept of understudies. taking off your outer layer, you replace it with the fluffy dressing gown wrapped tightly around your body. you notice it has her name embroidered. cute.
"you can leave your stuff here if you want, too" she pats the back of a chair which you assume is hers. the mirror was decorated with a string of fairy lights in the shape of stars. there was a little polaroid stuck to the glass which showed her putting up a peace sign behind another girl. scattered across the desk were various makeup pallets and brushes; she really wasn't very tidy. there were little touches of Anne everywhere.
"Thanks," you toss your coat over the back of her chair.
"oooh and look," she breezes past you to grab a brown stuffed bear wearing a crown that sat leaning against a metallic gold water bottle. on each arm sat a spiked cuff that matched the ones in her hair.
"you actually kept that," you state, taking the bear in question. it had been a gift from when things were still new; it was silly but sweet that she kept it.
"of course," Anne declared proudly. "he guards my stuff when I'm away. I'm gonna take him on tour."
"she loves that thing," shouted from the corner. it makes your smile grow. very carefully, you place the bear back in his spot to continue his duty. Anne gives it a playful little pat. "should we go see the others?" posed as a question, it was clearly rhetorical because the other girl is already out the door. with a quick goodbye, you chase after Anne. "we're going to the green room. everyone should be there eating lunch."
"Great." you sound a little unsure. it was amazing anyone found their way around this building with all its winding corridors and various doors. eventually, you come to a wide-open door that lets out a mixture of conversation and the smell of something delicious. on entering there seem to only be three people sitting around a large wooden table placed dead centre of the open space. but on further inspection, there was a kitchen set up hidden away against the back wall, and around the corner tucked away in the alcove was a coffee table surrounded by the stars of the show enjoying their food on the couches. you're suddenly feeling a little nervous about this. you haven't met anyone else in Anne's life before. you're stood a few paces behind almost trying to hide behind her.
"where'd you run off to?"
"there was a crazy fan waiting for me at stage door," she steps around you to usher you forward. "and I wanted her to meet you all."
"please stop calling me a crazy fan,"
Anne comes closer up behind you. "I'm just repeating what I was told," hummed softly before jumping away. "so this is everyone. we have my baby cousin Katherine," she points to a girl with long hair dyed pink at the end. you'd seen a few pictures of her before, she was also the girl in the picture on Anne's mirror. "and that's jane," she proceeds to point to each woman in turn. "anna. Catherine and Catherine- there's a lot of Catherines. some would argue too many Catherines."
"Catalina," one of the women corrects. "is preferred."
they each offer a formal greeting and you do the same, a little wave accompanied by an awkward hello. their names were familiar; Anne had told you stories about each of them. described some in great detail and others in less. She seemed to complain about Catherine - Catalina - the most but it never seemed too malicious. their faces were also plastered all over the building whether it be posters or merchandise. still, it was nice to put names to faces. Anne practically pushes you forward, insisting you sit down amongst them.
"Everyone be nice," Anne declares.
"we're normally saying that to you," Katherine seems to tease. you're not sure if you should laugh or not. some of the others do. Anne doesn't seem phased.
"Have you eaten? I don't mind sharing."
"it's cool. I brought it for you," with a tight-lipped smile, you take up space between Katherine and jane. they both shuffle along a little to make room. while Anne walks off towards the microwave leaving you alone and sounded by five strangers.
"so have you seen it before?" jane asks. "the show, I mean."
"uh... no," why do you feel kinda bad admitting that? "I haven't- I've heard very good things though."
"oh yeah?" Catherine hums and you nod.
"the reviews were positive and Anne is always raving about what the fans say."
"Are you watching tonight?" jane takes back control of the conversation.
"it was sold out,"
"you can always sit at the back if you want. most theatres have house seats they don't really sell" Catalina presents
"uh maybe," you glimpse at the microwave only to notice Anne had completely disappeared. it wasn't that you weren't capable of being alone but you were definitely feeling a little stress here.
"how long have you known Anne?" this time it was Katherine asking a question. she seemed younger than the rest; with an inquisitive expression on her face. while Anne had spoken of them to you many times, you wonder how often she has thought to mention you.
"uhm... maybe like two months?" you reply, thinking back to your first meeting. "almost three. depends if you count our first date, we didn't really start seeing each other until like weeks after so."
you watch for the shifts in expression as she tries to process what you've just said. she wasn't particularly subtle in her excitement at all. "did you just say first date?" there's a hint of surprise behind that very eager question. fuck.
"...yeah." should you not have said that?"
"as in you two are dating?"
"uh..." you're really not sure you should continue. what if Anne wasn't comfortable with you telling everyone? as if summoned by your desperation, Anne walks back into the room.
"you have a girlfriend?" Katherine shouts across the green room and everything goes silent. painfully silent. your heart is thumping so loud in your chest, you swear everyone else can hear it. everyone in the room is clearly surprised; by the outburst from Katherine or the idea of Anne having a girlfriend, you're not sure. Anne grabs her food from the microwave before joining you all.
"Jesus Christ, Katherine," Anne remarks as she slides in between you and jane. why couldn't she have picked the other side?
"you're dating someone and you never told me?"
"I'm sorry," you mumble quietly.
"It's fine," anne ensures you but you're hardly convinced. "in my defense, I didn't tell any of you."
"uh, why?"
"maybe because you'd freak out exactly like you're doing right now?" Anne's voice is so casual about the whole situation. it makes you feel even worse. "let's not make a big deal over it okay? yes, I have a girlfriend. I mean, it's only been a couple of months but I think it's going pretty well unless you weirdos scared her off."
"I can't believe you have a girlfriend." Katherine is more excited than surprised now. "not just a girl whose a friend but-"
"Chill, Katherine." Anne sounds surprisingly serious.
The conversation splits into multiple separate ones that almost leave you completely alone with Katherine. she is practically vibrating with excited questions. Anne tells you to just ignore her but it's hard when she's like right there.... staring at you. you decide to politely answer the questions you deem appropriate so as to not seem rude. it was kinda sweet if not a little annoying. Anne offers you some of her food on the end of her fork which you accept.
"Oh I have something for you," Anne mentions casually, handing you a single ticket. "figured you might as well see the show if you're here."
Six. eight pm. row AA. seat 6. "isn't this at the very front?"
"box office said one person canceled so I snatched up the space before anyone else could," she takes a sip from her water bottle.
"I was just gonna sit at the back," you don't mean to sound ungrateful. there was just less pressure at the back.
"you can't admire me as well from the back," she comments, bumping her shoulder against yours.
"you'll have fun," jane tries to assure you. "don't worry."
"thank you for the ticket," you place a gentle kiss against her temple. the pink girl beside you practically squeals.
the girls filter out one by one; off to finish getting ready for the final show of the day. they were nice enough people. other than Katherine, they didn't seem too bothered about your thing with Anne at least not to the same intensity.
"go through this door and you'll find some curtains that lead to the auditorium. there's also a bar downstairs, I'll give you this," Anne hands you a lanyard with a pass that says 'artist'. "it gets me around the building so I won't need it during the show. if you show it at the bar, they'll give you a discount."
"Thanks," you offer a smile.
"you gonna be okay?"
you nod a little. "of course. I'm a big girl, Anne."
"don't miss me too much."
"can't miss you when you're right in front of me."
"touché," Anne pecks your lips before running off to finish preparations for the next show. you push through the door and almost take someone out. you apologize profusely before heading to the bar. the show wouldn't start for another fifteen.
you're sat between a girl in complete cosplay and an older gentleman. the auditorium is packed to the brim. you're feeling a little anxious about being here. almost like you've robbed an experience from a paying customer. staring at the purple curtains as the music plays over the speakers, you wish it'd just start already.
SIX was like a sensory overload. from the staging to the lighting to just how loud the sound was, it was overwhelming. and to actually see Anne up on stage was sort of... surreal? you knew this was what she did for a living but to actually see it. to experience it in a room full of other people. next to a girl who admired your girlfriend so much that she came dressed in her exact costume was just something else. when walking around she hardly ever got recognised but at this moment she truly was a star. reality struck hard when it came to anna's song and you realised why Anne so desperately wanted you on the front row. it was just to embarrass you. you were conveniently picked to be the audience participant for this show. you stare daggers at Anne for the entire few seconds as people around you clapped and cheered. surely this would have been better suited to the fan right next to you.
a very sweaty Anne basically jumps on you from behind as she finally breaks free from the crowd at stage door. you hadn't minded waiting even if it was still super cold. this was part of her job and you could see the enjoyment on her face as she interacted with them. "shall we go?"
"of course," she loosens her grip from around you, falling to walk beside you. her hand interlocked with yours swaying just slightly with each step.
"so did you enjoy the show tonight?"
you take a moment to think about it. it was a great show. crazy. so you nod. "I did."
"Who was your favourite queen?"
"I think everyone was great. katherine's song was-"
"Wrong answer," she squeezes your hand gently. "try again."
she was fishing for compliments which she would have gotten either way with a little patience. "i was going to say, Katherine's song was really intense."
she squeezes your hand again. harder this time but not enough to hurt. "wrong answer again. you've got one last chance."
you can't help but roll your eyes. "you know, I think I liked the green one best. funny and the song was really catchy. also the girl who played her was really pretty."
"pretty you say,"
"just beautiful," you continue laying it on as thick as her heart desired. "I was in awe of her talent."
"oh my god, that was me," Anne states playfully, brushing against you. "I always knew I was the most talented one."
"that was you?" you raise a brow. "I never would have guessed."
"you're currently holding hands with a star." so much joy and pride in her voice. you can really tell she loves it.
"I'm honored,"
"Seriously though, thank you for tonight," her voice is softer now. "I'm really happy you came."
"you don't have to thank me,"
"I know... but I wanted to," she's no longer looking at you nor holding your hand. almost like it's hard for her to say this kind of thing out loud to you. "you didn't have to come or like bring me food or anything really. it's always fun to perform but it's extra special when I have someone in the crowd who likes me regardless of the show,"
"Anne..."
"it just meant a lot to me." you take her hand back in yours forcing her to stop. Anne peeks back at you, clearly, a tad perplexed before you pull her nearer. so close her warm breath hits your skin.
"I never wanted to make you feel like I didn't care about your show-"
"you didn't-"
"let me finish, okay" Anne nods. "what you do is... really amazing. I've never thought much about it but I was so impressed with your ability to just connect with people. it's fun and playful but you can sense the genuine emotion behind it. I'm sorry I didn't get to see it until now. I need you to know that I am so proud of you and it was honestly a privilege to be in the audience"
"you should come see me perform again,"
"I'd come see you perform a million times if it made you happy."
"a million and one times?"
you roll your eyes before leaning in close. "a million and one times." mumbled softly before your lips connect in a gentle embrace.
