Apprenticember, Day 7

Second week! Let’s go back to their physical description, but go even deeper! Do they have tattoos, piercings, scars, etc? What sort of clothes do they like?

(ngl, it's kinda fun digging up some of these old renders ehehe)

Jinana has pierced earlobes, in which s/he typically wears beaded hoops, and a navel piercing. Hir left nostril is pierced for the wearing of a nath. Hir hands and fingers bear a network of very fine white scars, the provenance of which s/he does not remember. (S/he gained them during hir apprenticeship under Master Borgia with Heron, finding out the hard way the hir magic is not very suitable for the fine art of alchemy. The scars were caused by exploding glassware, from which s/he instinctively used hir hands to shield hirself.) S/he typically wears henna on hir hands to disguise this, and on hir feet simply because s/he likes the look. S/he will also wear an array of silver rings to further distract from the scarring.

S/he always wears a woven copper ring on hir left thumb (the focus for hir Message spell), a necklace with a sigil of beaten gold (given to hir by Heron, it allows hir to cast Featherfall once per day… tragically forgotten in hir startlement when ghost-Lucio pushed hir off the aqueduct), and a crystal on a chain (given to hir by Asra, s/he does not know what it does, but he told hir never to take it off, and s/he always keeps it on hir person).

The bracelets on hir right wrist are made of stones with strong metaphysical properties: charoite, shungite, and onyx.

Jinana prefers to dress in layers, and hates having hir feet enclosed if s/he can avoid it. S/he cannot abide rough textures or restrictive clothing; everything s/he owns is made of soft cotton, silk, or wool. S/he hates long close-fitting sleeves and vastly prefers sleeveless, short-sleeved, or loose-sleeved tops. Most of the time, s/he wears stretchy camisoles (knitted by Asra or hirself), a long skirt, sandals, and a soft grey shawl. (S/he does not recall this, but the shawl was made by hir mother, and given to hir not long before hir parents were lost in the Goldgrave Collapse.)

Most of the time, hir only cosmetic is kohl smudged around hir eyes. S/he compounds hir own hair pomades and skin salves, scenting them with essences brought to hir by Heron and Asra. Hir favorite is lilac, but s/he will also wear ylang-ylang, gardenia, or carnation.

A quick worldbuilding Wednesday for "Out There: The 1K"

MIKRA

Mikra is the second oldest human homeworld. Masaka is the first. Terra (Earth) is the third.

It has a slightly higher gravity than Terra and Masaka, a 28 hour rotation, a molten iron core, and large chunks of land masses dotted with a web of major metropolis cities.

Mikra is the third planet in the 'Goldilocks zone' of a G-type star system consisting of 6 planets. Mikra is the only planet capable of supporting humanoid life.

An asteroid belt cuts between and fourth and fifth planets.

The population is dense in the cities. Most of them have more hardlined features and skeletal technology. They prefer a mix of form and function, so the cities have some elegant features. It's not all industrial architecture, but a majority of it is. Space is their first love.

Mikra is home to the highest production of spaceships, starships, starfighters, and freighters in the galaxy. An orbital shipyard ring belts the planet. It's run by the MEC - Mikran Engineering Corp. They work in tandem with the Regents.

The Alliance has Regent training facilities on Mikra. The most reputable naval academy is in the capital city of Seni - Starflight Academy. Only the best ARC wing pilots graduate. (ARC wings are single seat starfighters.)

Mikra's native human population consists of giants in comparison to masakans and terrans. They're overall larger than the other offshoots.

Adult men range from 6'2" at the shortest to 7'6" at the tallest. Adult women range from 6' to 7'2". Their bone structure is more dense, broader, and the facial features are a little more squarish. Aside from height, it's hard to tell a masakan and a mik-human apart unless you look closely.

They're also physically stronger than masakans or terrans due to the gravity.

Due to being taller, broader, larger, stronger, and more dense, the architecture on Mikra reflects that. It's a world catered to big humans. Masakans can get around, but find the size difference of everything big enough to be very annoying, but not a make-or-break deal for living there. Offworlders can acclimate to mikran gravity within a week or two. Though they will become stronger due to this, offworlders won't have the genetic strength advantage every mik is born with; the product of a hundred thousand years of evolution.

Mik-humans can be off world and still possess their strength. They won't lose it by living on a planet with lighter gravity.

--The common eye color mik-humans is brown. The next common is green. Purple is uncommon. Blue is rare. --For masakans, it's purple. The next common is green. Blue is uncommon. Brown is rare. --For terrans, it's brown. The next common is blue. Green is uncommon. Purple is rare. --For altarans, it's blue. The next common is green. Brown is rare. A few altarans with the classic vibrant blue eyes had their pigment genetically altered to green, purple, or brown in order to blend in. It's one less give-away of who they are. Altarans with natural brown eyes are 95% children of a parent who had this procedure done. The thumbprint is different for each individual, but the color is identical to the parent.

Mik, altarans, terrans, and masakans have been crossbreeding for thousands of years. Terrans got caught up in the mix when the other human races decided to live a quieter life on Earth, escape the galactic drama, fell in love, and stayed to start a family.

Half of Mikra's population work at the orbital shipyards, or other MEC affiliated industry.

The Regent military infantry forces consist of a large percentage of mik, though many make it up through the ranks, and some become pilots.

They also mine for karrelite and thrik.

Mikra is the only home of a nearly indestructible metal called karrelite. Pure karrelite is rare, so it's mostly used in jewelry.

Thrik is the more common metal found all over the planet along with iron, nickel, and quartz.

Calling someone a thrik digger is an insult.

Both metals are used for their technology.

Spaceships are made of a blend of karrelite, thrik, and iron mined from the main asteroid belt.

Karrelite was named after the planet's original name before the masakan invasion/colonization; Karreia. The people were the Karre (pron. Kah-ray).

The masakans renamed the planet Mikra after one of their ancient goddesses, and the people became the Mik.

When the keth attacked 20 years before the time skip in the story (chapter 8) without warning, it drew out both the Mikran Defense Forces (run by the planet's government), and the Regent Starforce (the Alliance), along with civilians - human and alien - with their own ships brave enough to fight. Most with their own ships fled as soon as possible.

The keth attacked the major ocean side city of Quora Ness in 18 B1K (before the One Thousand).

It was late afternoon in summer - around dinner time.

Within the story involving Yune Darrak (the smallest mik in history), he was 5 years old at the time, and living in Quora Ness. The attack happened on his birthday. He hates his birthday due to this, and refuses to celebrate it.

The keth sent their attack ships of single seat fighters called Darts into the city, and parked two of their massive capital ships - Scars - in orbit after blowing out a portion of the shipyard ring.

Thousands of lives were lost in the destruction of the shipyard alone.

A massive aerial battle ensued.

The scars blasted escaping vessels out of the sky just in case those ships held what they were after.

The darts were suddenly recalled, and both scars bombarded the city from low orbit.

One of the scars was destroyed. The other one stopped its attack and fled the system, but not in fear. They were finished with their objective.

By the time they left, then sun had hardly begun to set.

The attack was one of the longest-lived, lasting an hour.

Half of Quora Ness lay in smoldering ruins.

The keth only attacked a world, outpost, station, or settlement if something or someone in it posed a threat to their power.

No one ever figured out what the keth were looking for.

The death toll ranked in at 100,000 people, and thousands more injured.

The keth hadn't been bold enough to attack a human homeworld in 50 years prior.

Yet only 18 years later, they would arrive in the Terran system with the intent to destroy the planet, Terra, just to eliminate the One Thousand kids the masakans barely managed to rescue from it.

They had destroyed the larger planet of Ephypso 400 years prior, along with multiple colonies, wiped out whole cities, and blew space stations to dust.

They were fully and completely capable of turning the Terra into an asteroid field.

Pocket orphanages and shelters popped up overnight. Rescue teams sent by the Alliance and other worlds searched the ruins for survivors. The children were sent to these orphanages, or the previously established ones. The original three orphanages had massively high, windowless, metal walls built around large swaths of land enclosing ruins to keep the kids safe, and to keep predators of all kinds out. These walls were tall enough that it was impossible to see over them - even from the top of the tallest tree.

The Alliance immediately began repairs on the major city, opening up hostiles, hospitals, evacuation areas in the space ports, aid stations, and relief aid to get people out to external family or friends.

Dangerous, large, vulpin-like prak came in from the wilds to hunt.

It didn't take long for shanty-type towns to grow among the ruins. Bandits, smugglers, mercenaries, and rogues descended upon the destroyed area to take advantage of the victims.

Various crime syndicates and thieving dens that were already in hiding there, took over. The thieving dens operated by smaller criminal groups - sometimes just run by an individual or a gang - were notorious for kidnapping and claiming orphans under the age of 12, so they would own that kid until they became an adult - age 20.

The kids caught up in this were enslaved.

In example, the "Dead Eyes" - a thieves den run Mother Gaul; a middle-aged, 10' tall, purple skinned, faintly striped, white haired annulean (humanoid alien) who saw human children as pets that she "saved" from the streets and enslaved - set up shop in a partially destroyed abandoned bot factory by the ocean.

(The Dead Eyes gained their name from her nearly solid white eyes and grayed out pupils resulting from an extremely rare genetic disorder that allows her to see the Source Field, but not interact with it or sense anything in it. She tests every child to see if they can see both a normal yellow light hanging from the ceiling and a blue Source Flare next to it. Yune is the only one who passed this test.)

The MEC partnered with the powerful ones, who would attack the smaller ones for people to sell into slavery to work in the shipyards.

The MEC also gave jobs to the victims. If you lived in that area, your work options were limited to shipyard labor, dock labor, industry, mining work, join the Mikran starforce, or join the Regents. The MEC would pay their workers enough to live, but not enough to escape.

Attempts to rehabilitate the city were thwarted by these criminal underground operations.

After five years, it seemed fruitless, so the Alliance along with the planet's government, built a massive wall cutting off the devastated area of Quora Ness from the untouched areas. However, humanitarian, a mild police presence, and evacuation efforts continued.

The Alliance had very little influence on that side of the wall.

The position of this miles long wall cast a shadow across that area first when the sun would set, earning it the name, the Dark Side.

Those who unlucky enough to live there were called Darksiders.

A social schism formed between the lowly darksiders and the lucky lightsiders.

Relief efforts - however seemingly fruitless - continue to this day.

What's terrible is that before the attack, Quora Ness was a beautiful, thriving spaceport city with lovely architecture, and happy citizens.

The Dark Side is now a post apocalyptic nightmare.

The darkside of the wall where Yune Darrak was born and raised is considered a lost cause. He grew up behind the wall of the largest established orphanage, the Arborly. He has no memory of the attack, or of the world beyond the wall. He didn't set foot beyond it until he was 12, and only saw it once for a brief moment when he was 6 1/2. He was never allowed to leave or see the outside world "for his own good." He only ever saw the sky, which fueled his dream of becoming a pilot and one day exploring the galaxy.
