Shuang Bei Translation (3/?)
An Exciting Offer S2 (Eps-6-7):
About who would bow first before the other in an argument (and not answering the question):
Lawyer Xu: I'm quite curious, in an argument between Shuang Bei, who would bow first before the other? He Jiong: It's like this. In settings like this one, where we're just sharing things, it's fine. But if we were to host an event together, I'd definitely be Sa laoshi's support. Boss Yang: Why? He Jiong: Because I think he's sharp. And I think, on many issues, he can pinpoint the matters that really need to be discussed. As for me, I could perhaps observe on the side what Sa laoshi, in his excitement, glosses over. So I think I'm better in the supporting role.
Tumblr media
Sa Beining: That's not support. (Boss Yang: You say it's support, but that's controlling the stage) You're the main pillar. Before coming to this show I only asked the production crew a single question: Is He laoshi in charge of controlling the flow? They said "yes"; I replied "then we're good to go!" I felt so at ease. So at ease. He Jiong: ...Next episode, let's have you controlling the flow, shall we? I'll give you my script. Sa Beining: ...Just tell me how much time you have to film this. He Jiong: *laughs* Sa Beining: You can hand over the control to me, I can take it. I can. At what time do we start filming, and when do you want it to end? He Jiong (trying not to laugh): It's like this, if you-- Sa Beining: Can you go home on the highspeed train (instead of the plane)? He Jiong: *dying*
About the exact same question (and still not answering the question) (unedited cut that didn't make it in the ep but were aired as bonus):
He Jiong: Whether someone's personality is good or not is not so easy to assess, actually. For example, talkativeness. *points straight at Sa Beining with his thumb* If he's talkative and there's no value in what he says, it's a bad thing. But if he's talkative and you like listening to him, it becomes a quality instead.
Tumblr media
He Jiong: In a situation where we don't have time-- Sa Beining (taking his hand): Keep pointing at me. Keep pointing. He Jiong (complying and pointing at Sa Beining with his thumb): If we don't have time restrictions (it's fine)....But if he, for example, prevents people from getting off work..... *slowly turns his thumb down* Sa Beining: *giggles* He Jiong: But in a situation where we have a lot of time, who doesn't like to chat with Sa laoshi? *turns thumb up again* Sa Beining: Let's keep chatting for another 200 yuan. (from the expression: lets chat for 10 yuan, aka let's chat for a short amount of time)
(Note: he never answered the question)

The Ravages of Time episode 3
So at the end of this card it says “excerpt from “The Records of the Three Kingdoms” – biography of Liu Bei. “The Records of the Three Kingdoms” does have a Liu Bei chapter, but it is titled “Biography of the Former Lord” (and in the translation below he will be addressed as such, according to the original source as well as the text on the card in the donghua). There is, however, a computer game titled “The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Biography of Liu Bei”. As you can imagine, that made my search a little more complicated than it had to be.
“The Records of the Three Kingdoms” has never been fully translated into English, but there were plans to do so, that were regrettably discontinued. Still, William Gordon Crowell, who was working on the project, kindly made the otherwise unpublished completed parts of the translation public, along with his translator’s notes.
The donghua card presents an abridged version of the opening paragraphs of the chapter; I took the liberty to edit Dr. Crowell’s translation to fit the card text as well as for general readability or to bring them in accordance with the terminology I use in my other translations. I have omitted most of the notes except for the explanation on Liu Bei’s looks; I suppose the details on geography and personas mentioned there will be of little interest to most, but if you want to know more, I encourage you to look into the full translation – it is available for free and easily googlable.
Episode 3
Tumblr media
From historical records on Liu Bei The Former Lord was surnamed Liu and had the given name of Bei and the courtesy name Xuande. He was a native of Zhuo prefecture in Zhuo commandery, and he was the descendant of a son of Emperor Jing of the Han, Prince Jing of Zhongshan [Liu] Sheng. The Former Lord's grandfather Xiong and his father Hong served in provincial and commandery offices. Xiong was recommended as filially pious and incorrupt, and he rose to become prefect of Fan in Dong commandery. When the Former Lord was young, he was left without a father. With his mother he wove mats to make a living. In his youth, when the Former Lord would play beneath a tree with other small children from his clan, he would say, “I must ride in this feather-covered chariot. His uncle Zijing said to him, “Don't talk so foolishly! You'll bring destruction on our house!” When he was 15, his mother sent him to study. With his clansman Liu Deran and Gongsun Zan of Liaoxi he became a disciple of the former grand administrator of Jiujiang commandery, Lu Zhi who was from the same commandery. Liu Deran's father, Yuanqi, frequently gave the Former Lord material support. Yuanqi's wife said, “Each has his own family. How can you regularly do this?” Yuanqi replied, “This boy is in our clan, and he is an extraordinary person.” The Former Lord did not enjoy studying. He liked dogs and horses, music, and dressing in fine clothing. He was 7 chi 5 cun (173 cm) tall, and his hands hung down to his knees. He was able to look back and see his own ears [1]. Humble before good people, he did not manifest his happiness or anger in his look. He enjoyed associating with braves, and in his youth he fought and hung out with them. The great merchants from Zhongshan, Zhang Shiping and Su Shuang, had riches of several thousands in gold. They sold horses, and they made a circuit through Zhuo commandery. They happened to see Liu and were struck by him, so they presented him with much money and wealth. With this, the Former Lord was able to assemble a group of followers. At the end of the reign of Emperor Ling, the Yellow Turbans rose up, and every province or commandery called up righteous armies. The Former Lord led his adherents, and under Colonel Zou Jing attacked the Yellow Turban bandits with distinction. He was appointed commandant of Anxi. – excerpt from “Records of the Three Kingdoms” – Biography of Liu Bei
[1] These physical idiosyncrasies were thought perhaps to be signs that Liu Bei had been destined to be ruler. Miyakawa Hisayuki has suggested that this description of the large ears and long arms may show the influence of Buddhist iconography from the sutras that had recently arrived in China. The size of Liu's ears, at least, appears not to have been a literary invention, for Lü Bu referred to him as the “big-eared boy.” “Looking back” and being able to see his own ears perhaps means they could be seen with his peripheral vision. The “braves” were ruffians with a code of honor, albeit one at odds with officially sanctioned moral values. Generally viewed by the government as potential threats to the social order, they were often considered heroes by the populace.
And into the spoilers we go!
Shuijing villa - Shuijing means bright, can be used in the sense of a person's brilliance. Literally means "bright as a mirror". The villa here refers specifically to a mountain villa.
I'm afraid there isn't much I can say about the Liu Bei and his companions in the context of the coalition against Dong Zhuo. It is for sure known that they participated in the campaign, but that's about it. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms popularized some fictional events of it, like the 3-vs-1 fight of the trio against Lü Bu, but I'm not sure if those will be included in this donghua. Liu Bei is described as a cunning tactician though, so I can imagine the donghua scenes happening.
Still, I'll give a bit more background info on all three. Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are probably the most famous example of sworn brothers. Around the time of the Yellow Turban rebellion (more on that on another episode) they gave the famous oath in the peach garden - or at least, so the legends and "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" say. The actual chronicles only mention the three were "as close as brothers", but the idea is still firmly ingrained in the collective conscious. There are even temples dedicated to the three of them - lit. called "Temples of the Three Righteous".
The above text only mentions he helped his mother make straw mats, but in the cut part shoes are also mentioned; as such, Liu Bei is sometimes worshiped as a god of shoemakers.
Largely thanks to the novel, Liu Bei is commonly regarded as an example of a benevolent and humane ruler, because of the author's preference for him. Considering that The Ravages of Time is mainly considering Sima Yi's point of view (and Liu Bei and Sima Yi will later lead rivaling kingdoms) I was actually rather surprised by the rather sympathetic portrayal of him in the donghua.
Still, while Liu Bei's political decisions and ruling philosophy can be discussed at length, there is no doubt that his choice of companions caused him trouble more than once.
Liu Bei was considered the eldest of the three brothers; the second was Guan Yu (courtesy name Yunchang). His life has been even more glorified than Liu Bei's - and since the Sui dynasty (581-618) he's been considered a deity. In fact, to this day, he is worshiped both in Buddhism and Taoism, as well as respected in other philosophies and religions, to say nothing of the Chinese folk tradition.
Still, despite this truly overwhelming veneration from pretty much all the following dynasties, the records say that despite his righteousness, he was "unrelenting and conceited", which proved to be his downfall..
Finally, the third brother was Zhang Fei (courtesy name Yide), whose main shortcomings - his quick temper and brutality - are the things he's most well-known for, and in a lot of ways he can be seen as the opposite of Guan Yu. While there are accounts of him composing poetry in the middle of the battle, it is by far overshadowed by his cruelty towards his soldiers and the fights he got into, sometimes dragging his sworn brothers into trouble as well.
(Just to complete the picture, yes, Zhang Fei is also sometimes worshiped along with Guan Yu.)
Regardless of all that, both Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were regarded as mighty warriors "worth a thousand men", as well as loyal followers of Liu Bei's.
---
Some final thoughts - it definitely feels like the story is playing up the future main players to keep the cast a little more manageable and maybe to put the more recognizable faces in early. Also the extra drama! It's definitely fun, so I'm not complaining XD

Episode 19
Tumblr media
Lol poor Xie Bei Ming! He’s been crushing after Dong Ru Shuang and now when she’s showing interest in him romantically, he’s totally failing to pick up her cues! Seeing him hard at work helping her figuring out the poison and making the antidote for the princess and Su Ci, Ru Shuang comes to sit by him, all smiley and cute with romantic music in the background. And Bei Ming’s like “my heart is beating so fast, is yours doing the same?” All the set up for a kissing scene between them, only for him to ask if their fast heart rate is because they got poisoned! And she’s so annoyed she’s like “yes we got poison so here drink this antidote” and knocks him out! 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After learning that Fu Zi You has been guarding outside her chamber day and night since she got poisoned, the princess calls him in to thank him. Before that, her maid asked if she wants to changed into something appropriate first, and she’s like “nah who cares.” And the little half step Fu Zi You takes back and keeping his eyes off of her when he came in and realized she’s not all dressed. Adorable. And the princess is very straightforward too; she tells him straight out later that she likes him even though he’s like he only has his late fiancée in his heart and excused his worry for her out of duty only.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lol Pei Zhao the mastermind! He’s trying to get the foreign prince to call off the engagement between him and the princess by saying that although he hasn’t sought political power in court, he’s been the target of political schemes like assassinations repeatedly. The recent poisoning of the princess was also aimed at him. Of course the protective older brother’s going to go back to the princess and be like maybe we should break off this engagement, staying here isn’t too safe for you. Lol what he’s not expecting was for his sister to be totally chill about it since she also wanted to ask him to break off the engagement too. The princess tells him that before, she followed his wish to marriage Pei Zhao because she believes he knows best but now she likes someone and knows what it’s like to love someone so she’s only interested in marrying for love. And so the engagement between Pei Zhao and the foreign princess is resolved.
And for her work in getting the poisoner and saving the princess, Su Ci is also released and restated since the Emperor now let women work in governmental organizations like men. All’s well that end well.
Tumblr media
Now that the engagement is off, the princess is cured and healthy, and the relation between the two nations is peaceful again, both foreign royals are going home. Before leaving though, the princess had asked for Fu Zi You’s position to be restored as thanks for protecting her while she was there and she even gave him a sword pommel ornament she made since he’d lost the one his late love gave him while chasing after her earlier. Now this is both significant in the fact that she gave him a gift *squeal* but also because we know from earlier that the princess doesn’t really care about those feminine virtues like knowing how to play the zither so her also making Zi You something, SIGNIFICANT!
Ok, for the short time that she’s been around, I really like her. She’s not like other foreign princesses interjected into the drama to cause trouble for our leads and their romance.  Sure her presence there helped solve the trouble that Su Ci’s gender reveal caused but she has her own little story and romance with Fu Zi You going on. I really wish she had proper interactions with Su Ci and Dong Ru Shuang on screen because these girls would have been awesome working together. English sub episodes on Youtube haven’t caught up to the episodes she’s introduced yet, but she needs to be named! so I’m just going to refer to her Viet translation name.
Ok back to this scene, not only does she gave him a parting gift, but she’s so mature about love and her feelings too even though before, we see Princess Vân Xuyên as kind of a naive person.  She’s like “Yes, I like you, but whether or not you like me back is my problem not yours. I’m not going to force you to return my feelings.  My gift to you doesn’t have to be romantic; it can just be a parting gift between friends. I might only like you for the rest of my life or I might learn to like to someone else in the future, who knows.”  And with a final “I hope we will meet again,” Princess Vân Xuyên walks out of this story for now.  But come on, Zi You! I know you’re still holding on to your feeling for your late love, but you also clearly have some affection for Vân Xuyên as well!  Ugh, I really hope their story will be revisited later because I’m rooting for a happy life for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that there’s no engagement and threat of exposure hanging over either of their heads, Pei Zhao and Su Ci can be as affectionate and open (to a degree) of their relationship as they want! Kisses after being trapped under a bookshelf while investigating who was behind that corrupted official that tried to poison Vân Xuyên!  (But like, seriously how does Pei Zhao not realize that his uncle is the one who has been plotting against him!)
Also in this episode, Su Ci finally was able to see the case concerning the murder of her clan and “evidence” of her dad plotting treason, but she’s like “that not exactly how my dad’s handwriting looks like.” Dun dun dun, trouble in the future for our romance and our characters when it’s revealed that Su Ci might have links to “traitors” whose deaths Pei Zhao might be involved in since it was during the time while he was on the battlefield?  But dude, we just put one problem behind us so like maybe at least one more soft episode of calm before trouble again, please?

Huang xi! Huang xi! Cong wo xi! De tuo zi wei, yong wei fei! Jiaoqing tongti, xin hexie. Zhongye xiang cong, zhizhe shei? Shuang yi ju qi, fan gao fei. Wu gan wo si shi yu bei.
O lady phoenix! O lady phoenix! Come and perch with me! Get progeny by my tail, forever my consort be! Making friends with our whole bodies, hearts in harmony. Come away with me at midnight, who will see? Like a pair of wings that rise together, fly high with me. If you feel nothing, my thoughts will teem with misery.
So I tweaked the translation to make it rhyme. Will I eventually try to tweak it again to make it scan? ...I did try, I couldn’t do it.
It’s worth noting that I’m singing in Mandarin, which shouldn’t be terribly far off from what the real author would have spoken when this song was actually written, in the Ming dynasty, if it was written by Northerners; I have no data about that. The Old Chinese actually spoken by Sima Xiangru would not have sounded like this. Search Youtube for “Fengsheng Bang dubbed with Old Chinese” if you’re curious about how Old Chinese sounded.
Some translation choices and why:
得托孳尾 - de tuo zi wei - This some Shakespearean shit here. “What, with my tongue in your tail? Nay, come again, good Kate.”
妃 - fei - this is more like “consort” than queen, and was actually fairly frequently used for imperial concubines, but also for principle wives of eg the crown prince. Queen is a semi-rhyme. I could have gone with “forever my consort be”? Should I have done that? You know what, I’ve literally just now talked myself into changing it to that. I am gonna go back and change that right now. Welp. Now you see the process.
知者誰 - zhizhe shei - This means “who will know”, not who will see, but I don’t know how to make the line rhyme otherwise. I think the meaning is close enough in context, because it’s clearly “if we leave in the middle of the night, no one will find out”, and see works as well as know for that, IMO.
雙翼舉起 - shuang yi ju qi - Just a little added note that pairs of wings have a particularly conjugal image in Chinese culture. There’s this whole mythical bird called a 比翼鳥 “biyi bird” where the male and the female supposedly only have one wing each so in order to fly they have to hold onto each other and work together.

Review Just A Smile is Very Alluring / Love 020 (Film vs Drama)
Penggemar novel China pasti tahu 'Just One Smile is Very Alluring' adalah salah satu karya novelis Gu Man yang terkenal.
2.      Alur Cerita
Kalian para penggemar novel ‘Just One Smile is Very Alluring’ akan lebih puas dengan alur cerita versi drama.
3.       Setting & Properti
Sejak dari novelnya, ‘Just One Smile is Very Alluring’ memang memiliki 2 setting, game dan dunia nyata.
Just A Smile is Very Alluring’.

Shuang Bei Translation (1/?)
I'm watching compilations and translating bits I like.
An Exciting Offer S2 (Eps-8-10): About rosters
Tumblr media
Sa Beining: But actually, it's delicate talking about it in that context. Especially if you're the one taking the initiative to ask "Hey, am I in your roster?" What if they don't have you in it? Should they tell you or not?
He Jiong: I think--
Sa Beining: Or else, what if you picked me, *points at He Jiong* but I didn't want to be with you. What do I do?
He Jiong: I think I would tell. I would say, "you are in my roster, but you're not at the top of the list". That's how I'd say it.
Sa Beining: But what if you said to me "you're at the top of my list", and I didn't want to be with you? How should I act?
He Jiong: Oh no, I wouldn't- I wouldn't - wait, what did you say?
Sa Beining: So, for example--
He Jiong: OH. As in you (Sa) are at the top of my list, but you actually don't want to be with me (Sa Beining: Yeah) What's wrong with you?
Sa Beining: *instantly drops his pen, cowering*
Tumblr media
He Jiong: What's wrong with you? Does Shuang Bei not deserve recognition?
---
(new scene)
He Jiong explaining the scenario: (...) We are organising a wrap-up party and the six people at this table must divide into groups of two to perform at the party. Please split up into groups freely.
--Silence across the table as everyone looks to each other. --
Sa Beining: Well, my roster's very short.
He Jiong: Who's on it?
Sa Beining: Not you.
He Jiong: I'M THE ORGANISER-- Fine. I'm joining as well. The 7 of us will split into 3 groups, each group has two people and one person is left behind. *eyes Sa Beining pointedly*
Sa Beining: ;;;;;;

Shuang Bei translations (4/?)
An Exciting Offer S2 (Eps 4-5):
About people putting a label on you:
(after watching a clip where the interns were using the term "poisoned milk/du nai" - a relatively newer term meaning someone who jinxes others):
Tumblr media
Sa Beining: What does "poisoned milk" mean? Boss Yang: First, you have to understand "milk". Zhou Shen: Think "milk". "Support". "Wet nurse". "Recharge". "Nursing". "Game play". Sa Beining (giving up): Never mind. Let's stop talking. Boss Yang: It's basically if I assure you that you'll win, and you end up losing ---Don't you do that all the time? Zhou Shen: Yeah, you're poisoned milk! Sa Beining: ???? Zhou Shen: The poisoned milk doesn't understand what poisoned milk means!! Sa Beining: I prefer the term "lighthouse"...At least it sounds a little bit more positive....! He Jiong: In the future, this show will give Sa laoshi the label: "Poisoned Milk Among Mortals".
Tumblr media
(new scene)
Sa Beining (about the interns): So if they lose this round, they will directly have to leave? He Jiong: Very possible. Sa Beining: Then should we say a last few words to Ding Hui(the least favored intern that Sa Beining favors most)? He Jiong: Don't be like this!! Don't be like this. Sa Beining: I'll jinx him, right? (Zhou Shen: Poisoned milk) Fan ChengCheng: Hey, but this is "Reverse Milk". So maybe he'll get to stay. Everyone: REVERSE MILK. Sa Beining: I've only just managed to get a grasp of the word "poisoned milk", now I have to understand "reverse milk".
(new scene)
He Jiong: I want to ask Sa laoshi. From the "Lighthouse" of Who's the Murderer?, to the fact that in this current show, we don't dare to follow any of the vote you cast...has this kind of label ever troubled you before? Sa Beining: The label of "poisoned milk" troubles me. (Everyone laughing) You call me "lighthouse", I can bear with it. But "poisoned milk", I have to think about it. Because I've JUST learned this term. I haven't caught on all of its nuances yet. He Jiong: It just doesn't feel too comfortable huh? (Sa Beining: Yeah)
(new scene)
He Jiong: Most times, at wrap-up parties for an event or a show, I really just want to go and party; to chat with everyone, make some new friends...have a drink... I don't know where this label for me came from, but everyone just goes: *daintily puts his hands together* "He Laoshi, I want to discuss Life with you."
Tumblr media
Zhou Shen: For real? He Jiong: Isn't it very vivid? That type is actually still okay. When I'm sober, it's okay. But sometimes, the second day, after I wake up, someone tells me: "He laoshi, what you said was SO right, I'll definitely do what you said". And I go *dramatic, panicked face-holding* "WHAT DID I SAY?" No, scratch that, "WHO IS THIS PERSON?"
Tumblr media
(new scene)
About goodbyes:
Zhou Shen: (...) But those friends that I cried so much for, to the point of being unable to stop...I still lost contact with many of them. It's quite cruel. Life doesn't have so many reunions. Sa Beining: And with age, you'll slowly understand which partings were the ones that were the most important to you. Because they will keep returning to you in dreams. (...) He Jiong: What we see in goodbyes, I think...is regrets. You keep thinking that you could have opportunities to treat them better. (Sa Beining: Learn to cherish) Or to do something more meaningful and fun together. But there are some goodbyes that are without warning. They come suddenly. And that kind of grief is something that cannot be compensated for. And that is something of a complete different nature from what they (the interns) are experiencing right now as goodbyes in a professional setting.

Shuang Bei Translation (2/?)
An Exciting Offer S2 (Eps-6-7):
About the new intern being too imposing:
He Jiong: I don't know why, I've only seen him for a dozen of minutes but I already can't imagine Min Zhe saying something like that anymore. Sa Beining: Can't you see his sweet side? He Jiong (with the most sass possible): I only found him super spicy. So HOT. So spicy.
Tumblr media
About their obnoxious younger selves:
Sa Beining: When I first got into university, (...) we were to establish our fresher year's first radio station. The teacher asked "who's had this kind of experience before?" No one said anything. I said very naturally: "I do". It was a very spontaneous thing for me too, I wasn't particularly trying to show off or anything. Many years later, at a gathering of alumni they told me they were all rolling their eyes that night. He Jiong: "Who hasn't had this kind of experience before?" Sa Beining: Yeah. "Who is this guy?" (...) He Jiong: Now that you say that, it made me think of a really obnoxious thing I did when I was small. In primary school, I was part of the group in charge of board announcements. So after school, we'd write the new board for the next day. I told the other three students: "You can go home first. I'll do it." This is still okay, right? Sa Beining: Yeah. He Jiong: But I added a sentence after that, I said "You can go home first. I'll do it. If you write it, I'd have to erase it and rewrite it anyway." Everyone: Wow. He Jiong: Seriously, at that time I had no idea I was so annoying.
About Ding Hui (the eliminated intern) coming to the host side:
He Jiong (to Ding Hui): Your mic has fallen off. *stands up to fix it back onto his collar for him* It's okay. I'll fix it for you.
Tumblr media
Sa Beining: He laoshi, aiya, my mic has fallen off too. Zhou Shen: He laoshi, mine too. He Jiong (to Sa Beining): The reason yours is off is because I pulled it off.

voice touching you with light Like a kiss, a secret whisper that awakens you Your eyes with a dream that opened gently You smile as you wait for me. Sit down by your side and give him a killer. I was going back to that time when I was beautiful. Following the fading memory I’ll take you to you tonight. Pouring stars filled with white stars Walking along this road together It’s clear in your eyes Before the world that was asleep Do not let anyone do it Walk all night Do it do it do it do it do it Everywhere you walk I want to walk with you along the way A beautiful night I miss you and pass the tunnel of time I gave it back to you again. Still in your memory A lovely voice Your eyes look like dawn Kiss your little little one. I want to start a new trip again. Follow a melodious melody I’ll take you to you tonight.
