Hakonechloa macra (Japanese forest grass, hakone grass, ornamental grass) forms clumps of elegant arching foliage and grows well in moist, humus-rich soil in cool shade. It works well edging a path, underplanting shrubs or in containers.

I spent a wonderful afternoon at the @nationaltrust Lytes Cary. A beautiful manor house close to Somerton in Somerset. The white flowers of Crataegus × lavalleei 'Carrierei' (hybrid cockspur thorn, Lavallée’s hawthorn) are popular with pollinators. This is a hybrid between Crataegus mexicana and Crataegus calodendron that originated in the 1870’s. The small deciduous tree has a dense crown with glossy leaves turning red in late autumn, after flowering there are large, orange-red fruit.

Misleading #oneadayplant today. Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican Fleabane). Each flower is actually very small (15mm ish); thought it worth appreciating in detail though. A garden designer’s favourite and quiet ‘bulking up and gap filling’ star of many a show garden, where only 100 plants contribute thousands of additional flowers. Not everyone loves it and often that is because it has freely seeded through their garden as it tends to. I’m a big fan. I love the transition of flower colour from pink as the bud opens, to white when fully open and back to pink again as it fades. Plants will seed to where they are happiest. Prune back clumps to maintain shape, extend flowering and manage overall size. It is a great little thing that feeds loads of pollinator insects from April until the frosts.
