Pacamama East
Tumblr media
I do like a good brunch and a little bit ago, I popped in to try the brunch menu at Pachamama East in Shoreditch.
Tumblr media
Prawn toast was on the menu so I couldn’t resist ordering it again.  This version came buried under a pile of bonito, spring onions and lashings of kewpie mayo.  The toast itself was crunchy, maybe with a slightly thinner layer of prawn than I’d have liked but otherwise very good!  I think I still slightly preferred the actual toast at Duck + Rice (read about that here) but I really enjoyed the toppings on this one.
Tumblr media
Pork belly Chicharrones.  These were lovely: crunchy nuggets covered in a slightly sticky sweet sauce!
Tumblr media
You can’t really see it but this was a yellowfin tuna ceviche.  The crispy bits on top were a great contrast to the ceviche underneath.  It definitely had a bit of a kick as well which was nice!
Tumblr media
I’m a big fan of hash browns and so was happy to see them on the menu.  It came with a fried egg on top and a salsa.  The egg had a lovely gooey yolk which was perfect to mop up with the hash browns!
Tumblr media
Seeing as it is brunch, it seemed appropriate to get waffles.  You get a choice of waffles between quinoa, charcoal, sweet potato and buckwheat.  We decided to go for the charcoal for something a little different.  It turned out to be a really good waffle with a nice chewiness to it.  It could’ve done with a little bit more of a crunch to it but otherwise, a great quality waffle!  The chicken on top was pretty tasty too!
Tumblr media
Our last dish was the char siu.  You could definitely feel the fusion in this dish as it was pretty different to the char siu I normally get.  It was made with iberico pork pluma which is a lot leaner than what I’m used to.  The flavours were still great, maybe a little less sweet but that actually worked pretty well.
This was a really nice brunch.  I find it’s actually quite hard to get a good waffle in London so this was a bit of a find!  The other smaller dishes were super tasty as well.  Definitely worth a visit for brunch!

Last night I had one of the best meals I’ve had in London in a very very long time. Only open 3 weeks - Madame Pigg (480 Kingsland Road) was superb 50% veggie 50% meat & fish This is one of their most popular dishes - charred leeks. We also had a Sicilian white wine which was SO good. Staff were unbelievably lovely and I highly recommend you go before they get too popular! 😉 #Repost @madame.pigg with @get_repost ・・・ Our biggest seller on the small plates. Charred leeks. Romesco and almonds. Lahpet
Tumblr media
A place that had been on my list of places to try for a while now is Lahpet.  At one point, I thought I might just wait until they open their new restaurant in Covent Garden but in the end, I couldn’t wait and decided to go try the original restaurant in Shoreditch.
Tumblr media
For our starters, we had a bit of a selection and the first things we tried was this platter of fritters.  The 3 different types were Mandalay (kidney bean and ginger), Shan Tofu and split pea.  I really liked the split pea and the tofu but I thought the ginger in the Mandalay was just a little overpowering.
Tumblr media
This was the ginger salad.  The ginger in this was pickled so wasn’t quite as gingery as what was in the mandalay.  As you can see, there was also a bunch of other stuff including refried beans, tomatoes, cabbage and peanuts.  My favourite bit of this was the peanuts as they were really crunchy and fragrant.
Tumblr media
The pickled tea leaf salad.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this but was very pleasantly surprised.  It was a very big portion but it was very more-ish.  There were quite a few similar flavours (and ingredients) to the ginger salad but I felt that this was a bit more savoury, maybe from the dried shrimp.  I can see why this is a bit of a signature dish at Lahpet.
Tumblr media
Our last starter was this paratha with a yellow pea filling.  The paratha was really well made, super flakey and crispy.  I thought the filling wasn’t bad but I think it must’ve been the carnivore in me that felt I would’ve just liked it a bit more if the filling had some meat (and I’m thinking pork) in it.
Tumblr media
For our mains, we had the hake masala.  This came with a pool of curry sauce and a lemongrass rosti that was lovely and crispy.  The fish was cooked perfectly and the sauce was mild in spiciness but full on flavour.  We’d ordered some rice on the side which the sauce was perfect for.
Tumblr media
The other main we ordered was the pork and mustard green curry.  This was quite a soupy curry but had these big chunks of pork shoulder in it that were tender to the point of falling apart from a touch of the wooden spoon.  It was a really tasty curry and definitely needed the side of rice that we ordered.
I really enjoyed this meal at Lahpet and I would definitely go back to try their bowls of noodles.  I’m looking forward to them opening their new restaurant in Covent Garden as I’m always happy to have another option for a tasty bowl of noodles :)

Smokestak
Tumblr media
Now that the summer is in full swing, it’s definitely bar-b-q season.  If you’re not one for doing it yourself, there are now a bunch of restaurants that do really good American style bar-b-q in London.  I’d heard that Smokestak in Shoreditch was one of them so headed down there to go check it out.
Tumblr media
To kick off the meal, we had this pitta bread with pesto and parmesan.  The pitta was super soft and fluffy and the pesto and cheese on top were really tasty.  A nice carby start to the meal!
Tumblr media
Lamb rib with parsley and shallots.  These were ok.  The skin was a little bit tough and there wasn’t a huge amount of meat on them.  The flavour was good though.
Tumblr media
Next up were pig tails.  These were amazing!  Super crispy with a sticky molasses sauce.  Under the crispy skin was a mix of gelatinous tendon along with chunks of meat; so good!
Tumblr media
These crispy ox cheek nuggets were also delicious!  The coating had these big flakes of crispiness and they were stuffed with beefy goodness.  Along with the pig tails, these were probably my favourite dishes.
Tumblr media
This was a pork belly rib with pickled cucumber.  The bar-b-q sauce on this was a little sweet but the pork was really well cooked and super tender.  The pickled cucumbers were also really zingy and did a god job balancing out the sweetness of the pork.
Tumblr media
This was a salad of charred greens, tahini, peanut and pomegranate.  I really liked this.  With a meal that has as much meat as this one, you need something to offset the richness and this did the trick and was pretty damn tasty too!
Tumblr media
The beef brisket.  If you come here with enough people, you can order a whole brisket or even just take it away for either a house party or just one hell of a dinner for one!  The brisket itself was pretty great.  It was juicy, smoky and tender.  It came with a slightly spicy sauce and some pickled chillies.  Not sure I’d be able to finish a whole brisket but you know, what; I wouldn’t mind giving it a go :)
Tumblr media
This was possibly my least favourite dish of the whole evening.  It was a daikon slaw with fish sauce.  It was just a bit flat; the daikon wasn’t really crunchy enough and it was just not very memorable.
Tumblr media
We also ordered a 30 day dry aged beef rib.  I had high hopes for this as I do love a good beef rib.  However, this was a little disappointing in that it was just a bit dry.  The flavour was good but it just wasn’t as pull-apart soft as I’d imagined.
Tumblr media
This dish was salt baked beetroot with big slabs of goats cheese on top.  This was really good!  The beetroot was nice and sweet and just look at that cheese!  There were also hazelnuts to give it a bit of crunch.  I really enjoyed this!
Tumblr media
Our last dish was a coal roasted aubergine with red miso and toasted cashew nuts.  Miso on aubergine is pretty much the Japanese dish Nasu Dengaku and this version was really good.  It was sticky and sweet; so soft and almost caramel-ly.  It was really rich but the cashews provided a really nice crunch; really good!
Tumblr media
Now onto dessert!  First up was poached rhubarb, custard and ginger crumble.  This was just like a really good rhubarb crumble.  The poached rhubard was quite sweet but really tasty and the custart and crumble were delicious.  Maybe more of a winter dessert but still, top notch!
Tumblr media
I love a good sticky toffee pudding and this was a good sticky toffee pudding!  The sponge was soft and surprisingly light but then it was smothered in this sweet toffee sauce; so good!
Overall, I quite liked Smokestak.  There were a few misses but the hits were big hits - I’m thinking the pig tails and ox cheek nuggets.  I’d definitely be up for going back but I’d change a couple of things in the order.  Still, if you’re looking for good BBQ, this place will do it!

Blacklock Shoreditch
Tumblr media
A while ago now, we had a pretty amazing Sunday Lunch at the original Blacklock in Sunday (read about it here).  We really enjoyed it back then and have been meaning to go back and try their steaks.  It’s taken us a while but we have finally made it back.  Keep on reading to see what we thought!
Tumblr media
We started off with the pre chop bites.  These were three little bites on crackers with toppings including blue cheese, their in house made pickles, anchovies and eggs.  They got a little stronger in flavour with each one and were a great little appetiser.  The anchovy with the egg mayo mixture was probably my favourite of the three.
Tumblr media
After the pre-chop bites, it was the starters.  First was the pigs head on toast with gravy.  Wow, this was amazing!  The toast was crunchy, the gravy was think and unctuous with a deep meaty flavour.  The pork was full of flavour, a nice mix of lean and fatty meat and the pickled cucumbers and chillies sharp and balanced the dish perfectly.
Tumblr media
This was the lamb belly ribs with a bunch of slaw.  The slaw was fresh and crisp while the lamb belly ribs were tender, fall off the bone and just fatty enough.  These were really tasty but didn’t quite live up to the high of that pigs head on toast.
Tumblr media
We decided to share a 900g bone in rib eye cooked medium rare.  We had originally gone for a 750g steak but luckily, we came to our senses early enough to change our order and boy was that the right choice.  The beef came nice ad pink with a lovely charred crust.  This might not have been quite up there with the steaks at Hawksmoor or Goodman but it was pretty damn good!
Tumblr media
To go with our steaks, we went for a garlic marrow spread which wasn’t actually a spread like I expected, it was just a couple of chunks of bone with the marrow and garlic butter inside.  The only thing I can say about this is that I wish there had been more of it!  Garlicky, beefy and just melts in your mouth; so good.
Tumblr media
Special mention has to go to these beef dripping chips.  Often, beef dripping chips can be a bit soggy but these were super crispy as well as beefy.  I really enjoyed these and will be ordering these any time I go!
Tumblr media
For dessert, we had both the cheese cake and the bread and butter pudding.  The cheese cake was basically just a great biscuit base, a load of white chocolate and a whole load of cream!  Definitely not the lightest dessert but so good!  Not the prettiest but a lovely end to a great steak dinner.
Tumblr media
The bread and butter pudding was unfortunately a bit of a disappointment.  It was a little stodgy and a little bland.  It definitely needed a bit of cinnamon and maybe some nutmeg too.  There was also not enough raisins in it (the 2 in the photo were pretty much it).  It was possibly the only dud in this meal which was a shame but it wasn’t enough to put me off from coming back.  For dessert, stick to the cheese cake.
Blacklock Shoreditch is a great place to go for a super tasty steak.  It was a lot cheaper than some of the bigger name steak places like Hawksmoor and Goodman but it was still really good quality steak and the sides were pretty awesome too.
