This week is Shark Week.
Join the feeding frenzy of entertainment and celebrate Shark Week in style. Get ready to be hooked on thrilling encounters with these majestic creatures.
It's true that both sharks and Shark Week get a bad rap, but we'll take any excuse to highlight these phenomenal fishes! 🦈✨
This shark's name is as cute as it is! Lollipop catsharks, Cephalurus cephalus, have large heads and gills, which may help them absorb oxygen in low-oxygen environments. This individual was filmed in the Gulf of California at 707 meters (2,320 feet) deep. In the Gulf of California, these sharks are often found with their cousins, the filetail catshark, Parmaturus xaniurus. The two species may be difficult to tell apart from a distance, when individuals are small, or when P. xaniurus uncharacteristically has its gills expanded in low oxygen environments.
It may be from this ghost shark, also known as a chimera, swimming in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico. While related to sharks, these deep sea cartilaginous fish species genetically diverged from their shark relatives nearly 400 million years ago!

#Repost from my shark conservation friends at... @hongkongsharkfoundation @download.ins --- SHARKS NEED YOUR HELP IN THE USA 🇺🇸! The good news is that the US Senate have passed 👍 the Shark Fin Sales Elimitation Act and next we move onto a vote 🗳 in the U.S. House of Representatives. As we look to celebrate "Shark Week" this coming July 11 - 18, we would like to direct your attention to one way you can have a significant impact on the welfare of sharks. For those that live in the 🇺🇸 , we encourage you to submit comments to your Congressional Representative and urge them to support H.R. 2811 - the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act of 2021. This bill would prohibit the possession, offering for sale, selling, or purchasing of any shark fin or product containing any shark fin in the U.S. If you are unaware of who your Representative or Senator is, you can find and contact them here 👉 https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative . As you consider how to contribute to sharks this July, we encourage you to keep this impactful opportunity in mind and watch for our Hong Kong Shark Foundation 香港護鯊會 "Shark Week" activities coming soon July 11 -18, 2021..... #savesharks #sharks #sharkweek2021 #petition #sharkfinsoup #sharkfineliminationact https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ7Y86UBRTl/?utm_medium=tumblr
Hope everyone has had a chance to catch some of the amazing Shark Week shows! Eerily and without fail, Shark Week was always when batshit crazy stuff went down during my stint working at the library. It makes no sense, but neither does patrons lighting fires in the bathroom (as they loved to do). Thinking of all my library friends during this time. Hope you are making it through okay! Just keep swimming.
Whelp, I had to do SOMETHING book-related to Shark Week!! This is an excellent intro to the world of legitimate, detailed Shark Science. It's absolutely perfect for kids age 7 to ~14, and honestly it's even pretty for grown ups.
Most people really only think of Great White Sharks when thinking of sharks, but they only comprise a tiny fraction of the worlds sharks (and they aren't even responsible for most of the fatalities they get blamed for ((yup, I'm looking at you, Bull Sharks))...).
This graphic novel introduction really drags readers into developing a more nuanced understanding of sharks, both their incredible variation and their unique behaviors (including some of my favorites, like Lemons, Black Tip Reefs, Nurses, and Epaulettes). It has a simple story that really does well to work in a startling number of important shark-y factoids.
It's a really good bit of exposure to the fact that sharks are Nature's Perfect Hunters without over-doing the scary bits. It does very well with showing that sharks all have individual personalities and are generally pretty shy and anxious creatures.
I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone who is at all interested in learning a little bit more about our Oceans' most important Apex Predators!!
You know this one guy that always wears shorts, even during winter? ❄️ . Yeah, that's basically endotherms. Or more specifically here - Lamnidae family, which most notable members are great white, short and long fin mako, salmon shark and porbeagle shark 🦈 . These super-heated species have the ability of keeping their core body temperature warmer than the surrounding water - differently than the rest of cold-blooded fish 🌡️ . One of the key benefits? Much higher speed and endurance! Heated muscles perform better, granting these sharks much longer bursts of energy and further migration journeys. ⚡ . In a slightly smaller scale, the rest of the organs benefit from warmth too! Eyes for instance, crucial to successful hunt, can achieve much clearer vision and higher resolution 👀 . The trade-off? Higher than average energy consumption. This furnace is not gonna keep hot by itself! But when you're blessed with super-speed... Prey is not a big problem! 👌 . 👉 Follow @freshnsaltyeco to get a clue in the blue! . . . #clueintheblue #freshnsalty #sharkeducation #oceandecade #supersharks #sharkweek #greatwhite #endothermic #mako #sharkweek2021 #superpowers #fishfacts #animaldrawing #marinelifeillustration #knowyoursharks #sharkillustration #marinebiology #fishillustration #marinescience #oceaneducation #oceanoptimism #wildlifeartist #scienceillustration #sealifeart #sharks #sharksconservation #sharksofinstragram #savethereef #savetheseas #shark https://www.instagram.com/p/CRbmNnuhlav/?utm_medium=tumblr
Coming up for a breathe. No sudden erratic movements. Be smooth. Stay calm and keep your heart rate steady. Scan the surrounding water and constantly check your six. Keep eye contact with any sharks that may be circling. Become one with the deep blue. . . SHARK ACADEMY is now streaming for @sharkweek on @discoveryplus. "Catshark" & "Big-Eyed Thresher Shark" 😺🦈👀 In honor of shark week, I wanted to share a couple of my older shark themed pieces and add that I found out a fun fact about the Catshark while reading to my nephew. Apparently, they are bioluminescent and will glow green in the dark depths of the ocean. Absolutely fascinating! 🙀🙀🙀 #catshark #shark #sharkweek #sharkweek2021 #sharks #sharklove #caturday #artist #digitalart #digitalartist #painting #digitalpainting #digitalpainter #digitalillustration #digitalillustrator #animalpainting #animalpainter #animalart #animalartist #nature #animals #animalportraits #bigeyed #threshershark #throwbackthursday #throwback #tbt #animalfacts #sharkfacts https://www.instagram.com/p/CRX3TvfrY3l/?utm_medium=tumblr
This is one of the three deep-sea catshark species found in the Northeast Pacific, the longnose catshark, Apristurus kampae. They are found at depths ranging from 180 to 1,888 meters (590 to 6,500 feet). Catsharks are bottom feeders, and are most active at night, often sleeping in groups during the day, and hunting at night.
What's Shark Week without a Shark Awareness Day? Today we want to introduce you to the bluntnose sixgill shark!
As the name implies, sixgill sharks are distinguished by their six pairs of gills. They share very similar body characteristics to fossils from the Jurassic period millions of years ago! This friend was spotted in Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. To learn more about the sharks and rays found in the sanctuary and express some creativity, visit: https://go.usa.gov/x6SbJ
