Time Ramvent Day 28: Christmas on Androzani Well, we've just seen Peter Capaldi's birth, now let's watch how he dies in 'The Caves of Androzani'. That's right, the grimmest, most depressing story in all of Doctor Who is now a Christmas special! It's all blowholes and bat milk, featuring Helen Mirren as Sharaz Jek!

Nominations are now open: Which villain would make the best companion?
This tournament is intended to be smaller than usual, so I may be aa little stricter about who qualifies (at least when i'm familiar with the character, which means the EU nominees are going to end up with a lot more leeway)
as some starting rules
You can only nominate actual villains, they must actually be evil, not just dislike/be disliked by the Doctor
They must be an individual (or possibly a small group of individuals), eg you cannot nominate 'a dalek' it must be a specific dalek or daleks you can point to and say that/those ones
No companions, I don't care if they were evil when they met the Doctor or became evil later or were evil the entire time, they cannot already be or have ever been a companion
If there are multiple versions of the same villain (eg because they can regenerate), they will only be included once, either as generically as can be acheived, or a specific one will be chosen through a group stage
If they don't have a name (or you can't remember it) I will do my best to figure it out but try to give me as much context as you can and bare in mind im not psychic
Please bare in mind when you are nominating that I am hoping to keep the number of nominations under 64 to run this as a mini-tournament. This is not a hard rule so if nominations do exceed 64 its not a big deal, just something I'd like everyone to bare in mind (we have now broken 64 so full sized tournament it is
Nominees
The Master (this counts for any and all versions of the Master, a specific one will be chosen during the group stage, I'm preempting their nomination because duh)

Rewatching the Caves of Androzani
This was my favourite Doctor Who serial when I first watched all of them, aged 16 or so. (It took me about a year - astonishingly I did have a social life and even a girlfriend at the time). So I was curious to see how my opinion of it would compare 15 years later.
Not well, as it turns out.
Tumblr media
I think it's less to do with my tastes becoming more sophisticated, or anything like that, than how much the context has changed in the past 15 years. Aged 16 - in 2007 - I loved how dark and gritty the story is. How everyone double-crosses everyone else. How it dared not to be upbeat.
Now... well, I've seen Game of Thrones and the "everyone is amoral and self-serving" thing doesn't seem nearly as interesting as it used to. I'm much more interested in stories where everyone is trying to do the right thing, even if their idea of the right thing is dubious (like Invasion of the Dinosaurs).
Caves of Androzani was the right story for me aged 16. It's just not so much the right story for me now.
A few thoughts:
This is definitely a story that benefits from being seen in context. The slow, remorseless slide into despair that beginnings with Resurrection of the Daleks and finishes with Caves of Androzani makes this - especially the ending - much more powerful. It doesn't work nearly as well watched out of order.
I had forgotten how aggressively kinky literally everything in this story is. Sharaz Jek's outfit and his treatment of Peri and the Doctor, obviously, but even the fondly patronising way that the Doctor talks to Peri feels like... something.
For a story written by Robert Holmes, there's a sad lack of a Homesian double act.
The villain with facial scarring trope was pretty tired even in the 1980s.
My changing perception: when I first saw this story, I thought that the way it all takes place in this small number of confined spaces is thrillingly tense and claustrophobic. Now, it's more, wow, we're back in this corridor again?
This would all have been great in Blake's 7.

Doctor Who: The Caves of Androzani
I rewatched this serial on 1 May 2023.
We begin with the TARDIS arriving on Androzani Minor. Peri’s excited to be there. The Doctor teaches Peri (and the audience) about fused silica. Peri is much less obnoxious now with the Doctor; the Doctor’s keen to explore and explain geological features to her. But, quickly they become embroiled in an altercation between gun-runners and miners from Androzani Major. There’s also nasty creatures that infect the Doctor and Peri with a poison, as well as androids.
Like a fair few Dr Who stories, this serial is highly critical of the capitalism of the type that was becoming entrenched in Pinochet’s Chile, Reagan’s USA and Thatcher’s Britain. Trau Morgus is truly the villain of the piece with his dreadful plan to close factories in one area and force unemployed people to another area to work as free labour, as well as what he did to Sharaz Jek. There’s a moment where Morgus sounds identical to the capitalist rulers in the Sun Makers, another Dr Who story by Robert Holmes.
Part of the story is riffed off Gaston Leroux’s tale that became the big musical of the 1980s, the Phantom of the Opera, with Sharaz Jek and Peri in the main roles.
And, in the end, we farewell Peter Davison as the Doctor, and welcome Colin Baker to the role. Of course, Davison has an enduring connection to the series through his own appearances and that of his daughter and son-in-law.

Me again. Are there any Dr Who monsters which scared you way more than you expected them to do? For me it’s the Drashigs from Carnival of Monsters. Nope! Nightmares for weeks! They’d pop up out of nowhere interrupting my dreams like a drunk relative! Sharaz Jek is another one, I knew about him from his reputation but he’s horrifying, properly unhinged, Kroagnon, the Flood (not the Halo flood!) Light, and Fenric also spring to mind. I can’t recall any more at the moment. What about you?
For some reason the ones that scare me tend to scare me for looking weird rather than being all that scary in and of themselves. So stuff like the Mandrils from Nightmare of Eden or Mestor (as I've mentioned) creep me out more than actually 'good' scary monsters like the ones you mentioned xD. Though one that's a bit of both is the node with Donna's face from Silence in the Library, that thing really scared me as a kid both because it looks so uncanny (shit which shouldn't have a human face having a human face creeps me the fuck out) and because it insisting Donna has 'left the library' and 'been saved' is really creepy. Though funnily enough it always makes me think of a story my friend told after the episode aired- apparently he and his brother were watching it separately and one of them was up to the crew member possessed by the Vashta Nerada going 'Oi, who turned out the lights?' and the other was up to the node going 'Donna Noble has left the library' so they were just hearing 'Oi, who turned out the lights?' 'Donna Noble has' 'Oi, who turned out the lights?' 'Donna Noble has' on a loop. Idk if I explained it very well but it was really funny to me at the time.

Me again. Got another question, what was the last Dr Who figure you bought? For me it was a toy Dalek some time around 2014. I still have him. What about you? Just curious.
I think it's still the Sharaz Jek figure I mentioned getting a few weeks back.
