help me understand | it's my favourite depeche mode album's birthday and so, in honour of my beloved some great reward's special day, i made a little set based on my favourite lyrics from 8 of the 9 tracks (it doesn't matter is missing bc i don't have a favourite lyric from that song + i dislike odd numbers on posts, i'm very finicky about it okay sh).
while sgr wasn't my first introduction to depechay mowedTM by any means, it is the album i fully fell in love with first and i would do literally anything to defend her because i love it with every fibre of my being.

i rly do need everyone to understand tho like the pinky swear scene? extended and made more serious. the callback to it when kikuhiko is alone at night and reaches out to hold onto his finger bc he misses his boy best friend? added. miyokichi telling kikuhiko on a date that shes jealous of him and sukeroku and he replies Thanks. ? completely new content. blowing off his date with miyokichi to let sukeroku sleep in his lap? sure doesnt happen in the manga! miyokichi finding them there and throwing a fit dragging sukeroku off his lap saying my turn now hehe? only found in sgrs 2016 my beloved. sequence of practicing a rakugo story about liking women -> leaving yosei saying i have another performance to get to -> running into miyo on his way -> going home to sukeroku after his performance? all added! playing a married rakugo couple in their performance for konatsu? anime onlyyyy. like the things that anime did to kumotas poor little ambiguously gay manga characters.................... while all being completely faithful to the story and adapting most panels word for word

Thinking of anime - Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu by Haruko Kumota Part 1
Showa Rakugo Genroku Shinjuu (SRGS) is a manga released in 2010 and was complete in September of 2016 with the final 10th Volume,
My introduction to this series was through the anime that aired in 2016, and 2017 for one cour each, and at first, I watched it for one reason and one reason only.
This man. Ishida Akira voiced one of the main characters in this series, Yakumo the 8th. I was a great fan of Ishida especially from his role as Katsura in Gintama, and Kaworu from Evangelion.
I recently went back and re-watched the series and felt that it was worth writing something about it.
All stories communicate a moral message. Be it intended or not, and its audiences form meaning out of it. That is something I did for Eva, and SGRS is one series that is worth doing an analysis of, to try and understand, behind the surface, what is the message the author is trying to convey to us?

Before I state my thesis of “What is the author, Haruko Kumota, trying to convey to us?”, let's dissect the title, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu.
Showa refers to the period of Japanese history when it was ruled by Emperor Hirohito, spanning across the years 1926 to 1989. Showa Genroku refers specifically to the post-war period of the Showa era where japan saw a great economic boom leading up to the economic bubble. The period of the Showa Genroku period also being the time of rapid westernization of Japan’s entertainment culture, and Japan as a whole.

Rakugo, or descending words as is often translated into English, is the traditional Japanese art of storytelling. It takes place with a man sitting alone on stage and telling folktales using nothing but his voice, and a folding fan. While they are supported by music played by Taiko drums and Shamisen during their entrance and exit of the stage, from the moment they sit down to the moment they tell the punch line of the story, they are alone.
While the practice of Rakugo has been slowly dying out along with many other cultural practices in Japan, largely under the influence of westernized modernization, it is believed that many practices of Rakugo have seeped into the Owarai (Comedy) geinin (Comedians) profession; branching off but maintaining the associated culture of hierarchy and masculinity.
Shinjuu refers to the act of “double suicide” mostly between a man and a woman who are in love but are unable to be together due to circumstances. but other reasons and combinations of gender exist as well. It is a key theme throughout this series and has three key moments of significance, but the most important in the context of the title is the third and final, Yakumo’s attempt to do so with the act of Rakugo itself.
Therefore, we can interpret the title as “to perform double suicide with the practice of Rakugo, during the period of Showa Genroku”.
Yakumo and Sukeroku: brothers by apprenticeship
This is the tale of one man’s journey to safeguard the place that he found. A place where he can be accepted as himself, a place he met the people he loved, a place he wanted to protect, and, in the end, decided to die with it in his old age out of regret. That aspiration not fulfilled, for his lingering affection for the practice that he loves; a practice that he did not want to die, the suicide being only an excuse he made for his desire for the atonement of letting his beloved brother Sukeroku die.
Yakumo and Yotaro: Master and Disciple
That affection for the practice is passed down to his disciple Yotaro, and through him, we reach the conclusion of the story where the practice of Rakugo survives and finds a place in the modern world.
My thesis for, of what I believe the author wants to convey is: What does it mean to hold affection? And how does affection of the past influence our interaction with the world that changes?
I will continue this piece in about 2 weeks interval with translation for Eva in between
Please do watch the series if you had not, it is a great work of art that makes use of both visual and auditory storytelling and a great example of how the unreliable narrator trope can be utilized.

if you hate miyokichi, you don’t understand this show.
(to be upfront about certain things: i don’t think ‘she didn’t do anything wrong’. nor do i think she and sukeroku, or she and kiku, were ever actually in love so. lets start with that.)
in the context of the show, there are three overlapping factors affecting the lives of our main trio here: homophobia, gender, and class. if kiku is affected by homophobic and sexist gender norms (’a boy can’t be a geisha!’) and sukeroku is affected by homophobic and classist norms, miyokichi is affected by sexist and classist norms, and the specificities of her situation end up making her far more vulnerable in her life than either sukeroku or kiku is.
she has been forced into sex work for the entirety of her life. first she attempts to have kiku marry her, because he is of an elevated class and will literally bring her out of poverty and free her from needing sex work and bring stability to her life. it’s not a love match, it’s literally survival for miyokichi. if kiku understands any of this–and i think he does–he ultimately chooses not to care. left with little other options, miyokichi turns to sukeroku. both of them clearly are thinking of kiku when they’re with each other, but they both know that–miyo obviously recognizes the homoerotic nature of sukeroku and kiku’s relationship (how many times has she tried to force her way between them/claimed sukeroku ‘steals’ kiku from her? it’s not even subtle, folks). but again, it’s something. if she can get sukeroku out of the city, she thinks, away from rakugo, he will get a job and support her and maybe she can escape sex work and poverty with him.
is it likely? no. does miyo manipulate sukeroku with her pregnancy? absolutely. is miyokich the only one at fault here? absolutely not. sgrs is a dramatic tragedy…all of the characters have faults and make serious, painful mistakes. that’s the show.
anyway, sukeroku turns out to be a complete fucking bum and does nothing but drink all day, and miyokichi is forced back into sex work again. she abandons him and her daughter and while in many ways that is a reprehensible choice, is it also an understandable one? yes, in my opinion.
rather than hate miyokichi, it is far more interesting to try and understand her, to recognize that her situation was stacked against her in every single way and that she did what she thought she had to do to survive. no, she is not perfect. but kiku has spent the entire time he has raised konatsu denying her the one thing she wants because she is a girl, deliberately making her miserable, making her suffer, because he wants someone to suffer the way that he suffered, to be unhappy as he is unhappy. yet kiku is the fandom’s beloved fave despite this.
why can’t miyokichi ever get the same understanding?
(NEWEST EP SPOILERS///) yes, she killed sukeroku. that is the tragedy that this entire show is built upon. maybe not everyone is willing to try and understand miyokichi in this moment. but that tragedy stems from her own tragedy, the one that she has struggled with her entire life, the one where no one wanted to empathize with her or reach out to her and understand her and maybe help her instead of manipulating and using her.

Started watching rakugo anime w my sister bc of u and it’s fun so far. We loved monster and it’s usually easiest to convince my sister to watch a show if I say that the pretentious tumblr theys and lesbians loved it. Not that ur pretentious specifically .
