They were almost there. Almost.
In hindsight, Eita should’ve listened to him. Kenjiro had told him about feeling uncomfortable, but his stupid boyfriend said he was overthinking or maybe he was sleep deprived. And, well, considering they’ve been on the run from zombies for weeks, he was true about both things. But he also should have listened when Kenjiro suggested to keep going for a little while longer, when he said he had a bad feeling about this. Eita had stood his ground though, told Kenjiro to rest and said he’d make sure everything would be okay and keep him safe. If he noticed something strange, he’d wake him up.
He promised.
When Kenjiro opened his eyes, he looked into deep darkness. His heart was racing, as if he’d just woken up from a bad dream. “Eita?” he whispered, praying that his boyfriend was near. No reply. “Eita, where are you?” Again, the world stayed silent.
Until someone screamed, someone he instantly recognised as his boyfriend. “Kenji, get the fuck up! Run!”
This wasn’t even unusual. It happened at least once or twice a week, so Kenjiro just jumped from his place on the ground, picked up his and Eita’s rucksack and the blanket he’d slept with and took off running into the direction he remembered they’d come from. His shoes made loud echoing noises as he sprinted through the abandoned underground parking lot until he arrived back outside, hiding next to the entrance until he heard Eita’s footsteps come closer. Only when his boyfriend appeared next to him, breathing heavily and immediately grabbing Kenjiro by his jacket to drag him further away from their overnight spot, he felt a little better.
Together, they sprinted through the abandoned streets just outside of Tokyo, not halting until Eita deemed them safe.
Kenjiro exhaled a breath of relief when they leaned against the wall in an alleyway, hiding in the shadows. “Are you okay?” he murmured quietly, running his hand through Eita’s hair.
The ash blond man hummed quietly, holding on to Kenjiro as if his life depended on it. “I love you, Ken,” he whispered before placing a kiss on his cheek. “I love you so much.”
He’d always made fun of Eita for being so sappy when they got together, but now times were different, so he just smiled weakly. “I love you, too.”
Suddenly, Eita pulled away, eyes not meeting his boyfriend’s. “Good, because I need you to do something for me.”
A pause, then Kenjiro asked, “What?” With a deep breath, Eita raised his head, chin lifting a little to show his boyfriend the mark on his jawline. A zombie mark. It felt like a punch in the gut. “No.” The word was barely a whisper, but the pain in it was clear. “No.”
“Please, Ken,” Eita quietly begged, hand reaching out for Kenjiro’s. “I need you to be safe.”
“I can’t do that,” Kenjiro muttered, tears pooling in his eyes. He’d already lost everyone else he loved, and now he had to let go of Eita, too? This wasn’t fair.
“You can. You have to. You promised, baby,” Eita returned, squeezing his boyfriend’s hand comfortingly while his free hand reached for the knife in his backpack. “Please, do it for me.”
Tears started to roll down his cheeks, and all Kenjiro wanted to do was sit down on the ground and cry like a child, but he knew they didn’t have time for that. He knew he had to. With a shaky hand, he accepted the knife Eita was offering him, but couldn’t help but press one last kiss to his boyfriend’s lips. “I love you so much,” Kenjiro whispered, squeezing Eita’s hand gently.
“I love you, too,” Eita said, before he took a deep breath, eyes defocusing. He was gone. Before Not-Eita could do anything else, Kenjiro rammed the knife into his chest, right about where the heart was and watched as his boyfriend fell to the ground, unable to keep his mouth shut. A gut-wrenching scream escaped his lungs when Eita’s eyes fell closed.
Kenjiro stood for a few more seconds, staring down at the corpse, at the knife in its chest and wondered how he was supposed to live on with the knowledge he had done this? With his chest hurting like it had been set on fire? Slowly, he sank to his knees and pulled the knife out again, looking at Eita one last time. “I’m sorry.”
Then he took off running once again, knowing the zombies definitely had been alerted by his screams and were already on his trail.
