I am sorry, how do they expect me to stay sane when they reveal that the madness he has without seeming rhyme or reasons which drives his ministers into terror and freakouts is EVERY TIME IT DRIZZLES because that is when he thinks of her who he believes lost AAAAAAAAAAAA

JJS plays every scene like he's so horny for Mong Woo that he can barely breathe. And the angrier he gets the hornier he is? It's INCREDIBLE.
For the past few years, every time there's a new JJS drama, I once again wonder if he's the best actor in dramas. I mean, dramaland has a lot of great actors, but the run of Jealousy Incarnate, Nokdu Flower (NOKDU FLOWER!!!!!), Hospital Playlist, and now this is kind of undeniable (okay, Two Cops was in the middle there, I didn't get past like the third episode, but my problem with it certainly wasn't his performance). Even I, noted HP anti, cannot deny how good he was. And before all of that was Oh My Ghostess, where PBY was certainly the main attraction, but he was great in that too!
The incredible thing is that Nokdu Flower (seriously, watch Nokdu Flower if you haven't, it's so underrated but just an absolute work of art) and Sejak are these very intense dramas, and he's so good in those, and then HP and Jealousy Incarnate are comedies, and he's so fucking funny in them (my mum is rewatching Jealousy Incarnate and I really want to join her, his performance in it is just hysterical), there simply is nothing the man can't do.

The way Joo Sang-hwa becomes the embodiment of the phrase "this is a terrible idea but fine we'll do it your way" almost every time Yi In does something in episode 8 makes me laugh.

I want to see them again in another drama together. Their amazing chemistry was the best thing for me in “Captivating The King”. It was one of two reasons why I kept watching till the end.
The other reason was the sheer talent of this man.

The worst thing is, you can see the king brace himself at the end of episode 10. Like, he's carved out this little corner of vulnerability with Hee-soo where he's reverting to being himself and not "on" as the king - not so masked and armored - and you can see him brace himself for the collapse of that little corner at the very end of ep 10. And he KNEW she was scheming and chose to ignore it, so that's on him, but also the scheme is so DUMB and is going hit where it hurts most and he's going to be INCREDIBLY ANGRY about it.

Sejak 8
This show has officially hit "I'm just screaming the whole episode" status. Would I have loved for their first make-out session to be before he knows she's a woman? I mean, sure, but the way this scene shook out was basically perfect, as the waves of understanding wash across JJS's face and Hee Soo fully gives in to the part of her heart she's been trying to deny for three years. It's just so deliciously complex and contradictory, for both of them, their desire and love for each other woven through all those layers of deception and betrayal and scheming.
On the subject of betrayal, though... Like many people on this website, I agree that Yi In plans to make his nephew his heir and is working to discover who killed his brother. It's become increasingly obvious, but I kind of clocked it from the time jump, when it's established that in spite of a decently well-populated inner court, the man doesn't have a single child. If he had been sincere in stealing the throne for himself, surely his first priority would be to have his own son, which could then leave him free to dispose of his nephew, who living is always going to be a threat to his rule.
Now, I have nothing against the nephew. It's just that, as I have established, I think usurpation is quite sexy (unless a man is trying to usurp a woman, which is why Stephen of Blois can get fucked), and I would have loved for Yi In to be a true usurper. Monarchy is all bullshit anyway, right? To me, usurpation is like an acknowledgement that it's bullshit: if the occupant of the throne is solely determined through mistakes of nature, why shouldn't humans be able to seize destiny in their hands and take what they want? If the only qualification is being born to a certain parent at the right time, then why not just change that rule to suit your own intention? Especially when nature more often than not gets it wrong: it's hard to respect the legitimacy of Grand Prince Munseong, given that he is the heir of a man who clearly never should have been king.
But no, clearly we have to have Yi In be a noble leading man, so even if he does some bad things, it's in service of a worthy and legitimate goal. I don't hate it, I just liked it more for that one enchanted episode where it seemed like he might go full anti-hero. As it is, I guess I'll have to settle for him being a super-complicated and conflicted man played by an incredible actor, poor me!
(It's true that it hasn't been established for sure that Yi In took the throne for noble reasons, but to me that does very much look like where it's going.)

Sejak episode 12
Tumblr media
I am and will always be Team Dong. If she killed the former king I'm sure he deserved it. That image of him pressing his marred and bloody thumb to her mouth to make her kiss it is so fucking haunting
Tumblr media
"Please don't call me by that name, it's reserved for my friends" is the sickest burn I've ever heard! I aspire to this level of monklike serenity. He simply does not give a fuck and I envy that.
Tumblr media
Jungjeon mama 😭 she was allergic to intrigue and now it's killed her 😭
Honestly this scene was so sad, when she clasped her father's hand and told him she'd carry his warmth with her to the underworld I sobbed ngl. I know that narratively Yi In has to become single, but they didn't even consummate the marriage...
Tumblr media
I'm sorry what age is this girl who could be married off to either Munseong or Yi In supposed to be?? Since daebi and uncle are so eager for an heir she has to be at least 15-ish? Imagine having to choose between a middle schooler or a middle aged man 😬
Tumblr media
What if I write my Sejak fic from the pov of this peach tree. Wouldn't that be experimental
Tumblr media
*rookie historian intro playing*
Tumblr media
Yi In finds time for self-pity in any situation, even when his wife is dying of intrigue. Way to center yourself bro :/
Tumblr media
Their chemistry continues to be godtier! Say what you want but Mong-woo has amazing rizz. She really managed to get him from exasperated to horny with a single line
Tumblr media
Love this eavesdropping scene because 1. very solid acting from all three and 2. for once it gives legitimacy to Mong-woo's mistrust in the king. He is waving red flags like he's a wigwag operator, and all of her newfound hope crumbles. (They should probably have had scenes like this scattered throughout the gay lovers arc to make her continued plotting more reasonable, but better late than never.)
Tumblr media
That's his mom! 😭😭 I love them so much. They deserved to enjoy this new familial relationship for longer than *checks clock* two and a half seconds
Tumblr media
Speaking of chosen families ❤️
Tumblr media
This final scene made me want to BITE AND SCREAM AND TEAR MY HAIR OUT it's so good. I literally had to get up and pace around muttering to myself. Yi In's face journey is such an experience. You can see that a part of him understands the moment she begs him not to go inside, she is always dauntless even when revealing her most fucked up plans to him and now she looks absolutely terrified and he knows. He attempts to joke because he wants her to prove him wrong, but really there's just one thing it could mean, there's just one thing that Yi In has waited for her to do all this time. And the fact that she used this. She used the heartfelt devotion expressed in his vow to come whenever she called. She used sex. She used this place. Fuck fuck fuck.
I honestly have no idea what will happen now! A very exciting time to be alive, my friends!!

I knew it. Hee-soo couldn’t reconcile her great love for Lee In with her anger at what was done to her, her father and her friend. She wanted to kill him, hoping it would kill the love she had for him. He was her object for all her pent-up anger and outrage and frustration. Unfortunately, she still loved him in spite of everything. It didn’t help that he seemed to be a totally different person when he was with her.
