PSA: Laios vs Laois
EDIT: The first part of my essay is up, you can read about Laios' name here!
One of the most common mistakes I see in the Dungeon Meshi fandom is misspelling or making a typo of the main character's name.
His name is Laios, not Laois. It is pronounced LAY-əs. Here's a screenshot of Laios' page in the World Guide where Kui wrote his name in Latin letters.
Laios comes from the Greek name Λάϊος, alternative spelling is Laius, but both are equally valid transliterations from the original Greek, which can also be transliterated as Láïos.
I won't go into it now, but in my upcoming essay about the cultural and linguistic references in Dungeon Meshi, there's a lot to say about Laios' name and why Kui chose it. It's not made up! It's not fake! It's a real name and it suits him and the story of Dungeon Meshi perfectly.
Laois is something too, but it has nothing to do with Laios (info dump under the cut if anyone's curious.)
Laois County is in Ireland. It is part of the Eastern and Midland Region and in the province of Leinster. The county name derives from Loígis.
The name Loígis stems from the name of the tribe's first chieftain, Laigse(a)ch, Laeighsech, or Loígsech.
A twelfth or thirteenth century gloss on the tribe's name says that Loígsech comes from lóeg secha. The word lóeg, literally 'calf or fawn', has the figurative meaning of 'favorite or darling', while secha means 'more than; above or beyond'.
As you can see, this doesn't really reflect Laios' character in any way, except maybe comparing him to a calf or a fawn? Though those really aren't animals Kui associates with Laios, as she normally associates him with wolves or lions.

This book is mostly told through two POVs - Kada and Sladyana - two mothers who will do anything for their children.
Kada is a Vedma - a kind of witch who helps people in their day-to-day lives, as well as communing with the goddess Zemya. Her goal is to protect her daughter Secha at all costs - as her daughter will only be safe from the goddess claiming her as her own when she turns sixteen. Until then, she runs the risk of being captured by the Fox and given to the goddess Zemya - unless Kada can stop her, even if it means betraying everything she’s worked for.
Sladyana is a noblewoman whose daughter, Luba, went missing 15 years ago - taken by the same Fox hunting Secha. She has also adopted a four year old mute child named Tula. Sladyana is convinced Kada - the woman who helped her have her child years ago - knows something about what happened to her missing daughter. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get her back.
The conflict in this book is between these two mothers trying to do anything they can for their daughters. However, only one of them can have a truly happy ending - and she must bring suffering to the other to achieve it.
We might not agree with everything they do to achieve their goals - but we can understand them. There’s also a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming and recontextualizes what we thought we understood. I thought it was a really clever interpretation - as well as fitting into a common theme in folklore of hidden agendas and betrayals.
Even with the creatures and magic present within the book, the conflicts feel real and grounded - and I was not expecting to be simultaneously rooting for both of the mothers at the end, regardless of what they had done beforehand.
This is a moving tale of motherhood and loss - and how far a mother will go for her child.

The Burning Firs War - Part 1
The Burning Firs War, or the Hrozavan War for Independence, was a civil conflict waged between the ethnically Hrozavan rebellion groups, known colloquially as the Vylntsy', or Kolotnyky, against the Holy Kingdom of Ilijika, in the Hrozavan and Kladiowian duchies. The war marked the beginning of the fall of the Holy Kingdom, with the dukes of each duchy growing more and more against the High King. The war is widely known as the birth of modern espionage and sabotage, due to its heavy use in this war.
The pivotal figure at the helm of this revolution was Duke Danylo Svyatskyi, an Illjikan aristocrat who had been appointed to govern the Halytska Duchy. Despite his Illjikan origins, Svyatskyi became enamored with Hrozavan culture and the spirit of Hrozavan nationalism. His commitment to the granting of equality to the Hrozavafolk was what caused the beginning of the war
The war began in earnest with the fiery destruction of Nadyiv, following the estrangement of Duke Danylo Svyatskyi from the royal family of Central Ilijika, the Holy Kingdom's ruling family. The Razing of Nadyiv destroyed the city, killing nearly 75% of the citizenry, and the Duke was slaughtered in the main square, now known as Prezydentskyi Maydan. The remaining citizenry largely escaped to other cities, particularly the other duchies' capitals, spreading the news of the fate of Nadyiv across Hrozava.
From the smoldering remains of what was Nadyiv, the wife of the former Duke Danylo, Duchess Katka, declares full independence of Hrozava from the Holy Kingdom, from the seaside plains of Vorohta, to the icy fjords of Morozka Secha, in the rage and despair from the events taking place.
Another side effect of the Razing of Nadyiv, was the distrust of many of the other duchies in Hrozava to the royal family. Many of the dukes believed the High King overstepped his duties as a divine monarch, with causing such a catastrophic event, the exact opposite reaction the King hoped for. With that, many of the dukes agreed to meet and assist the new Duchess in Halytchyna, and later, with the Duke of Zvolyna, created the Vylntsy', creating a new army to oppose the swelling number of Ilijik soldiers attempting to subjugate the revolution.
Hrozava's awakening begun.
