So much perfectly good scrap material gets thrown away during construction. Even like, unused nuts and bolts and random little hardware bits. Lengths of metal pipe that would cost real money if you tried to even get a sample of a similar material at a hardware store. Scraps of wood big enough to make something out of. Etc.
This is really upsetting to me because I know so much of this is just going into landfills and not long that—a lot of it is perfectly useable and stuff that crafters and artists usually have to pay money for!
Recently I have lowkey turned into a dumpster diver because there’s useable stuff thrown away in the big garbage bins in the construction zones of the library where I work. I’m a student and I don’t have money to buy materials for art projects!! Also I have an assignment at the library I work at to decorate our desks for holidays—however we have a budget of literally $0 so I have to use whatever random stuff is around. Even before this I once found this huge cylinder of construction-quality styrofoam that I’m making into a pretty cool little cushioned stool out of it.
TLDR: someone should start a system for construction zones to save useable scrap material and put it somewhere for poor local artists to sift through before it gets thrown away. It would help creatives save money AND keep a lot of construction waste out of landfills!

My take on Shishido's beta design as described by Yokoyama in the behind-the-scenes video from last week!
#yakuza#like a dragon#like a dragon gaiden#rgg#ryu ga gotoku#kosei shishido#shishido kosei#my art#original#emphasis on My Take because yokoyama was gesturing more than verbally describing what it looked like but#from what i can tell it had raglan sleeves like this which ended at the elbows#the idea was scrapped because Who The Fuck Would Make A Puffer Like This#but it lives on in my heart o7#also the jacket was almost certainly on a children's jacket in versace's barocco line so i wanted to keep the vibe#he's not actually supposed to be zipped-up because yokoyama and mb talk about his necklace at length BUT:#1. you can see the raglan much more clearly this way#2. yokoyama emphasized how bunched-up and bulky the old jacket was#3. ehh to put it simply shishido himself is a trigger for me at this point so i needed to minimize how much i studied his face#whenever i finish this i'll probably add his bracelet because there was a lot of discussion about the material of his jewelry#all of that aside. i'm happy this was my final piece of the year :) happy new year everyone

dante likes when you're tucked into his side or holding his arm. if vergil wants to cuddle, he's spooning you. if you want to cuddle, you're koala'ing him. lady prefers laying on someone's chest. trish prefers being laid on. nico likes being the little spoon. nero also spoons, but he's the big spoon otherwise he gets blushy. v likes laying his head on your chest to hear your heartbeat as he falls asleep.

Hello! I have been following your art for awhile now- I just had to refollow because Tumblr is a webbed site. If this is rude to say, ignore it, but I find your pieces inspiried! They truly are so cool. It got me to get a set of caran d' ache water soluble pastels myself! I have been hitting a bit of an art block lately, and I wanted to try something different than what I have been doing.
I just have a question about what you draw/paint ON. I see a lot of what you are describing as reclaimed support - what is it and how/where do you get that? It is wood correct? Is it a specific type of wood? Is there any specific way to prepare it for painting?

Hello there! Thanks for your ask! I'm really glad you're inspired and trying new things, and with my favorite art toy, no less. The wax pastels are truly a joy to work with. Like the crayon of my childhood dreams.
I typically paint on scrap wood. I will scavenge plywood, old shelves, lumber, furniture panels, flooring, etc. and prep them for painting. Part of my personal set of values I try to live by is to buy as little new things as possible and that counts for art stuff, too. Lately my friend and fellow artist Sasha reminded me that mounting paper on the scrap wood is also a thing! So I've been doing a bit of that lately, too, and it has been really nice for pastels and colored pencils. (I mount paper usually with Nori paste and/or matte acrylic medium.)
When I use words like "support" instead of scrap wood, sometimes that's just shorthand for "an archival panel of indeterminate material", such as my stash of 12"x16" PVC panels I got from a fellow art supply hoarder friend. It's strange to say "mixed media on plastic sign material" because that... doesn't necessarily bring up a clear idea...? But yeah, a lot (like the heron series) are done on sanded and gesso'd PVC panels that were once intended for outdoor signage.
Salvaging your own surfaces takes more time and work, but costs barely anything. It works with my rough and natural aesthetic so I lean into the wood's imperfections. Look, this one even has a hole in it! And you can see the grain and the pop-and-lock groove on the left. This was a piece of cedar flooring.

tl;dr I paint on flat sturdy things likely to last a long time. If you can sand, gesso, and attach wire hanging hardware to the back-- you're good. Go nuts.

To be quite honest I think the way a lot of ppl go ab the idea of a Ninjago rewrite is kinda funny.
Like, it's not the WRITER'S faults they constantly have to shelve story arcs and character development, they're constantly stuck switching everything based on how Lego wants to do things that specific year lmao.
SURE, there are a lot of weird inconsistencies and it's annoying how much they leave vague, but at the end of the day it's a dumb Lego show and the whole purpose is for kids to insert their own silly ideas wherever and whenever.
Ninjago isn't meant to be some hyper-intelligent show with the greatest depth and plot ever, it's a silly kid's show that kids can put their silly stories in whenever they wanna !!!
Ninjago's "ridiculous flaws and continuity errors and crazy inconsistencies" are part of the appeal!!!!
