USAF chooses Raytheon to deliver hypersonic attack cruise missiles

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) awarded Raytheon Missiles and Defense a $985 million contract to develop and demonstrate prototypes of hypersonic attack cruise missiles.
The HACM will be a hypersonic weapon launched from the air, powered by scramjet, designed to keep high-value targets at risk in contested environments from long distances.
According to Raytheon, HACM is an unprecedented weapon developed in conjunction with the Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment (SCIFiRE), a project from the US and Australia.
The U.S. Air Force awarded three 15-month SCIFiRE contracts in June 2021 to Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies to complete the preliminary projects of a hypersonic cruise missile.
The HACM program will now operationalize the Raytheon SCIFiRE prototype project for combat aircraft integration and deliver two assets with operational utility. Raytheon will work with Northrop Grumman on the delivery of the prototypes.

HACM is a scramjet-powered ammunition that breathes air. Scramjet engines use high vehicle speed to forcibly compress the inlet air before combustion, which allows sustained flight at hypersonic speeds - Mach 5 or higher. By traveling at these speeds, hypersonic weapons, such as HACM, are able to reach their targets faster than similar traditional missiles, allowing them to potentially escape from defensive systems.
"HACM is a powerful example of the development and integration of combat capabilities alongside our partners from the beginning," said the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. CQ Brown Jr. "HACM will provide our commanders with tactical flexibility to employ fighters to keep high-value and weather-sensitive targets at risk, keeping bombers for other strategic targets."
“We have more than a decade of cooperation with our Australian allies in advancing hypersonic technologies, and now we will bring this shared knowledge to meet the urgent requirements of national defense,” said Andrew Hunter, assistant secretary of the U.S. Air Force for procurement, technology and logistics.
Through the SCIFiRE agreement, the U.S. and Australia will continue to collaborate on the design and development of HACM, including the use of the Australian test infrastructure for the initial complete flight tests.
Air Marshal Robert Denney, Head of Capacity of the Royal Australian Air Force, said SCIFiRE is offering an opportunity to understand and influence the future of the development and acquisition of hypersonic weapons.
"SCIFiRE demonstrates our commitment to the U.S. to strengthen capacity results, deepen our alliance and strengthen our cooperation as we face emerging challenges and support regional ventures."
The U.S. Air Force plans to deliver a HACM capacity with operational utility by fiscal year 2027.
