Although I haven't worked for any of the big 3 companies but the advice I'd give to my student is that they should draw D-list or relatively unknown superheroes/villains. Heroes you'd probably only hear/see when there is a big catclysmic event like Infinity War/Crisis On Infinite Earth. Like I dunno, Quasar or Moondragon... Those are the heroes/villains that should be in your portfolio. Because let's face it, there could be a thousand artist who are all good at drawing Superman, Spider-man,etc. But there could be only a handful of artist that could draw a decent Iron Fist or maybe Ghost Rider. So why crowd at the top when you could work your way smartly from the bottom? Also, given that every artist/writer would have a different start-off point, those so called D-list heroes might be someone's favorite or even someone's first exposure to the medium. Not only is it good for nostalgic purposes but you could eventually share a common love for that "other guy/gal" that are either dead or intentionally forgotten. Long story short, I ended up drawing Steve Ditko's Squirrel Girl. It's both a cute and funny character to draw. Surprisingly enough, I am somewhat thankful for long-ass anime that had stood the test of time and generation gap. Animes like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Pokemon, Sailormoon, Samurai X, Hunter x Hunter and etc. are still being enjoyed by my students to this day. And since I don't know where they could be watching these said shows (I'm guessing Netflix or some old DVD collections that their parents had), the chapters, episodes, and characters they know are as limited as the ones I do know/ can remember. The last One Piece arc that had me hooked was the Enies Lobby Arc. The last chapter I read via online manga was the Impel Down Arc. I've always felt that the series could have ended right at the Arabasta Arc. Is it safe to tell them to outright skip both Skypiea and Thriller Bark? Because I hated those two story arcs. We did all that while discussing how the character design in One Piece are composed of extremes (extremely fat, extremely thin, extremely slender, etc.). Meaning there is no right or wrong way of drawing these characters so might as well just have fun with it. I've also discussed how some anime would have filler episodes which are essentially episodes where the characters are doing fetch quests that really don't advance the storyline. Just a short exercise on the various ways to draw your "own" fanart through either copying or by altering the pose. Copying is fine, it's tracing that is an absolute MORTAL SIN and an absolute no-no for every artist. And although OCs are favored over someone else's IP. You had to start somewhere. And more often than not, those "somewhere" are characters from shows and series you like. Also, notice how bits and pieces gets added or decreased with every redraw. My favorite part in designing our curriculum is that I get to sneak in a bunch of obscure and irrelevant references for my student to both learn and eventually research about. This would ensure that my class is somewhat unpredictable and eventually making my work both fun and enjoyable in the process.
